Umuwi: Coming Home: Decolonizing Filipinx-American Identity, Theresa Joyce Esmejarda Arocena Dec 2020

Umuwi: Coming Home: Decolonizing Filipinx-American Identity, Theresa Joyce Esmejarda Arocena

Communication & Media Studies | Senior Theses

This study investigates Filipinx-American identity using contextual understandings of decolonization as a conceptual framework. We will explore some of the long-term consequences of colonization on identity in the Filipinx-American community, including labeling theory’s current psychologies within the community, the formation of certain ideologies, and the attempts to reconcile transgenerational trauma and dismantle negative ideologies within the community. Seven participants were selected through non-probability sampling and were interviewed individually over Zoom video conferencing. Participant interviews revealed five interconnected themes regarding how identity is formed and sustained. Given the complexity of identity, more research is needed to explain other nuances of the …

Bridging Divides In The Interpreting Profession: Response To Gile And Napier (2020), Hilde Fiva Buzungu, Jessica P. B. Hansen Dec 2020

Bridging Divides In The Interpreting Profession: Response To Gile And Napier (2020), Hilde Fiva Buzungu, Jessica P. B. Hansen

International Journal of Interpreter Education

This commentary continues the discussion raised by Daniel Gile and Jemina Napier (2020) and aims to examine further the interconnectedness of signed and spoken language interpreting. Whereas Gile and Napier have drawn attention to some dimensions of complexity, we suggest that there are more to be explored. Focusing on the situated nature of interpreting, and including a broader range of practices of spoken language interpreting, we argue that complexities in interpreting are not inherently more present in signed language interpreting than in spoken language interpreting, and that there are situated and local contexts that must be taken more fully into …

Automating Aerospace Synthesis Code Generation A Tool For Generic Vehicle Design And Technology Forecasting, Thomas Peter Mccall Dec 2020

This tool has been developed as a precursory and developmental task in an initiative towards an artificial intelligence design and research assistant peer. The artificial intelligence peer is a perceived course for future design system evolution in the continued …

An Investigation Of Processes Linking Patient-Centered Communication Approaches To Favorable Impressions Of Vietnamese Physicians And Hospital Services, Christopher Mckinley, Yam Limbu, Long Pham Dec 2020

An Investigation Of Processes Linking Patient-Centered Communication Approaches To Favorable Impressions Of Vietnamese Physicians And Hospital Services, Christopher Mckinley, Yam Limbu, Long Pham

College of Communication and Media Scholarship and Creative Works

Strong doctor-patient relationships generate greater patient satisfaction and compliance with physician recommendations. Although prior research has explored distinct factors driving favorable patient outcomes, investigations have yet to comprehensively address the efficacy of different communication styles. Furthermore, it is critical to explore the full impact communication approaches have on perceptions of medical services. This investigation addressed two patient-centered communication approaches – empathy and nonverbal immediacy – as antecedents to Vietnamese patients’ impressions of physicians and hospital services. Results showed that these two factors were powerful, independent predictors of satisfaction and trust. Conversely, patient participation was a less robust predictor of judgments …

The Effect Of Racial Diversity On Hate Speech, A Study On The Black Lives Matter Movement On Twitter, Raey Ageze Dec 2020

The Effect Of Racial Diversity On Hate Speech, A Study On The Black Lives Matter Movement On Twitter, Raey Ageze

2020 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

The spread of hate speech is one of the major issues that social media platforms, like Twitter, have been facing as digital activism becomes more common. The spread of hate speech is often facilitated by the existence of echo chambers. To gain a better understanding of the type of users that engage in hate speech, tweets related to the Black Lives Matter movement were studied. Tweets that were for and against the Black Lives Matter movement were collected and labeled as hate, counter-hate, and natural. The followers and friends of the selected users of each type were then examined to …

Influence Of Music Education On Early Childhood Development, Valerie Kilburn Dec 2020

Influence Of Music Education On Early Childhood Development, Valerie Kilburn

2020 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Music is considered an integral part of early childhood education. Early childhood music education can contribute to a child’s vocal development, rhythm skills, and motor skills development. Vocal development is distinguishing between the different voices. Rhythm skills consist of developing an internalized beat. Motor skills are developing fine and gross motor abilities. These various aspects of childhood development in their relation to music education were outlined and elaborated on in this paper. Although early childhood is defined as birth to age nine, this research paper examined children from birth to age four. Practical application with young children was discussed at …

Narcissus Online: An Investigation Of Narcissism And Self-Concept Clarity In Relation To Online Dating Behaviors, Maryam Tajmirriyahi

Psychology Dissertations - Archive

Nemours studies over the years have provided extensive knowledge about the association between narcissism and romantic relationship initiation. With the increased interest in using online dating sites for finding sexual/romantic partners, it is important to examine the behavior of narcissistic individuals in online dating context. The current study systematically examined how grandiose and vulnerable narcissism (as measures of an inflated self-view), in conjunction with the level of self-concept clarity (as an additional measure of a fragile self-view) can influence a number of online dating behaviors (e.g., photographic self-presentation, inauthentic self-presentation, assertive self-presentation, self-disclosure, verbal behavior, derogatory behavior toward other daters …

Adult Literacy In The United States: Comparative Study Of Immigrant And American-Born Adults, Adam Keith Stein Dec 2020

Adult Literacy In The United States: Comparative Study Of Immigrant And American-Born Adults, Adam Keith Stein

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations - Archive

Despite its status as a wealthy, developed nation, the United States is plagued by widespread deficiencies in adult literacy. The problem is quite severe among individuals who were born in country, yet the situation for the nation’s immigrant population is nothing short of alarming. Using the U.S. portion of the data set for the international 2012/2014 Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), the study explores the impact of everyday practice on the development of literacy skills among adults aged 16 to 74. Where other studies typically focus on the literacy crisis among America’s school-age children, the present …

On The Generation, Structure, And Semantics Of Grammar Patterns In Source Code Identifiers, Christian D. Newman,, Reem S. Alsuhaibani, Michael J. Decker, Anthony Peruma, Dishant Kaushik, Mohamed Wiem Mkaouer, Emily Hill

Articles

Identifier names are the atoms of program comprehension. Weak identifier names decrease developer productivity and degrade the performance of automated approaches that leverage identifier names in source code analysis; threatening many of the advantages which stand to be gained from advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning. Therefore, it is vital to support developers in naming and renaming identifiers. In this paper, we extend our prior work, which studies the primary method through which names evolve: rename refactorings. In our prior work, we contextualize rename changes by examining commit messages and other refactorings. In this extension, we further consider data …

Modern Myths: Adding To America's Cultural Heritage, Kathryne E. Wood Dec 2020

Modern Myths: Adding To America's Cultural Heritage, Kathryne E. Wood

Masters Theses

As children, we believe in the Tooth Fairy, Santa Claus, and the Easter Bunny. We cower in fear when our friends talk about the Boogeyman, or how they'll summon Bloody Mary in the mirror. We check our closets, in hopes of finding an entrance to Narnia at the back of them. The world is a mysterious place in which anything can happen, anything can exist. What makes these types of stories so special? How do they generate true belief? What propels a narrative from entertaining story to the status of myth, legend, or folktale? This thesis explores the enduring qualities …

Global Englishes: Variations Of A Single Language In All English Classrooms, Amanda Leigh Faulkenberry Dec 2020

Global Englishes: Variations Of A Single Language In All English Classrooms, Amanda Leigh Faulkenberry

Masters Theses

This study was conducted in order to develop a procedure for creating a globally recognized curriculum for teaching students and teachers about global variations of English. The study first sought to discover attitudes towards global variations of English of speakers in each of Kachru’s three-circles model of World Englishes. Once there was an understanding of the negative attitudes that exist towards variations that fall within all three circles, the next goal was to determine what was being done to change this negative attitude. This meant analyzing curriculum and studies to determine how students and teachers are being educated on the …

Shared Service In The Archives: The Johns Hopkins University First-Generation Students Oral History Project, Jennifer Kinniff, Annie Tang

Library Books and Book Chapters

"Archivists, like librarians, often provide service to users that is defined by the mission and the institutional context of their employer. University archivists are tasked with documenting the history of their institution, and in doing so, have historically focused much of their attention on the records of institutional offices. This practice leaves out the stories of students and other communities affected by the institution. As immersed as university archivists are in academic libraries and the infrastructure of the academy, activist archivists can still challenge the status quo through intentional collecting of what is neither de facto, nor traditional. As archivists …

Global Solidarity, Global Worker Empowerment, And Global Strategy In The Anti-Sweatshop Movement, Matthew S. Williams Dec 2020

Global Solidarity, Global Worker Empowerment, And Global Strategy In The Anti-Sweatshop Movement, Matthew S. Williams

Sociology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

I explore the ideology of worker empowerment among U.S. anti-sweatshop activists, particularly United Students Against Sweatshops, and its strategic consequences for transnational campaigns. This ideology is central in shaping the movement’s transnational strategy and organization, fostering communication and accountability, particularly to organizations representing sweatshop workers. Such organizational choices, in turn, shape how transnational networks strategize. For example, the anti-sweatshop movement rarely uses the familiar tactic of boycotts, due to opposition from workers. The more empowered sweatshop workers in such networks, the more informed decisions their allies can make, and the more strategically effective the movement can be.

Health Literacy, Illness Perception, And Diabetes Self-Management In Korean-Speaking Immigrants With Diabetes, Su Won Park Dec 2020

Health Literacy, Illness Perception, And Diabetes Self-Management In Korean-Speaking Immigrants With Diabetes, Su Won Park

Nursing Dissertations - Archive

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is becoming an increasingly common disease with aging. As the prevalence of DM increases, the need for self-management is emphasized as a way to control DM and prevent its complications. According to the common-sense model, DM self-management is explained as an illness-related coping behavior that is affected by an individual's illness perception (IP). No studies were found that evaluated IP in Korean adults with DM in the United States, or that evaluated the association of health literacy (HL) with their IP and DM self-management. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between …

Exploring Student Perceptions Of Flipgrid In Online Courses, Patrick R. Lowenthal, Robert L. Moore

Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Asynchronous video-based discussions have affordances that can address some of the constraints of asynchronous text-based discussions. However, little research has been conducted on the use of asynchronous video-based discussions in online courses. As a result, the purpose of this exploratory study was to investigate students’ perceptions of using Flipgrid for asynchronous video-based discussions in fully online courses. We used a cross-sectional survey design to survey 79 students who used Flipgrid in a fully online course. Students overall reported that they liked using Flipgrid, it was easy to use, and that it helped improve social presence. In this paper, we will …

Kenya, a developing nation, is taking deliberate and conscious efforts towards this desired inclusive end, very much in line with Sustainable Development Goals. This study investigated the effective use of hearing aids for the acquisition of spoken language for learners with hearing impairment at St. Joseph’s School for the Deaf in Kisumu County Kenya. The study site was chosen purposively as it was a public primary school for the HI with sufficient access to appreciable governmental and non-governmental investments of HAs …

Autonomous Health Movements: Criminalization, De-Medicalization, And Community-Based Direct Action, Naomi Braine Dec 2020

Autonomous Health Movements: Criminalization, De-Medicalization, And Community-Based Direct Action, Naomi Braine

Publications and Research

This paper proposes the concept of autonomous health movements, drawing on an analysis of harm reduction in the United States and self-managed abortion globally. Harm reduction and self-managed abortion appear in the professional literature largely as evidenced-based public health strategies, more than as social movements. However, each began at the margins of the law as a form of direct action developed by activists anchored in social justice movements and working in community contexts independent of both state and institutional control according to a human rights perspective of bodily integrity and autonomy. An analysis of the history and dynamics of harm …

The Effect Of Using Native Versus Nonnative Language On The Participation Level Of Medical Students During Pbl Tutorials, Maha M. Al Turki, Mohamud S. Mohamud, Emad Masuadi, Mohammed A. Altowejri, Abdullah Farraj, Henk G. Schmidt

Health Professions Education

Purpose: Language competency has been perceived to be a significant barrier to both learning and interaction in university. However, most studies in this field confine themselves to perceptions of students. This study focused on actual behaviors in small group discussions. It explored whether linguistic differences affect the level of participation between students who conduct discussions in their native Arabic language and those who participate in a second language, being English. Method: An experimental study conducted at a Saudi medical school. First-year medical students were assigned randomly to attend two small-group discussions either in Arabic or in English. All sessions were …

Use Of A Signing Bioscience Dictionary In Increasing Student Interpreters’ American Sign Language Life Science Vocabulary, Judy Vesel, Diane Clark, Tara Robillard

International Journal of Interpreter Education

Interpreters who are skilled in academic ASL content, such as the vocabulary needed to interpret postsecondary science courses, are rare. This is not surprising, because interpreting training programs focus on developing the skills to fluently interpret from sign to voice as well as voice to sign, not on the specialized vocabulary for more specialized content. This study examined the impact of training interpreting students on the use of a Signing Bioscience Dictionary (SBD). Research involved incorporating terms found in undergraduate biology courses into the SBD, conducting an evaluation, and soliciting recommendations for improvement of the SBD. Key findings showed that …

The Functions And Uses Of The Marker “Bita:ʕ” In Egyptian Arabic: A Corpus Analysis: Discourse And Vagueness Functions, Asmaa Taha Dec 2020

The Functions And Uses Of The Marker “Bita:ʕ” In Egyptian Arabic: A Corpus Analysis: Discourse And Vagueness Functions, Asmaa Taha

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Discourse markers are used considerably in Egyptian colloquial Arabic, yet few studies examine them in colloquial Arabic. A mixed-method research design adopting a descriptive corpus-based approach is used to better understand the communicative discourse and vagueness functions of the words bita:ʕ, bita:ʕa, and bitu:ʕ in Egyptian Arabic discourse. This study also highlights the collocational behavior of bita:ʕ, bita:ʕa, and bitu:ʕ as well as their colligation patterns. A correlation is found between colligation patterns of the markers bita:ʕ and its variants and particular discourse and vagueness functions in context. Additionally, the study investigates the morphosyntactic phenomenon in which bita:ʕ has …
