A Fearful Warning: J.B. Metz’S Memoria Passionis In Response To Western Culture’S Discomfort With Dying, Death And Grief, David R. Ford May 2020

A Fearful Warning: J.B. Metz’S Memoria Passionis In Response To Western Culture’S Discomfort With Dying, Death And Grief, David R. Ford

Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations

This study examines Johannes Baptist Metz’s theological focus of the “awakening of memory,” and specifically the connection of such awakening to the memoria passionis, mortis et resurrectionis Jesu Christi, as well as the opening to a new narrative, leading to a freedom for praxis and mission and finally, leading to transformation. This awakening can be a path that confronts the dysfunction of a death denying and avoidant culture, as well as one that challenges us to confront suffering of so many kinds, especially that of the poor and marginalized. Such a theological focus, in fact, has the potential to …

State-Community System Of Care Development: An Exploratory Longitudinal Review, Isaac Karikari, Betty Walton, Christine Marie Bishop, Stephanie Moynihan, Pinkie Evans May 2020

State-Community System Of Care Development: An Exploratory Longitudinal Review, Isaac Karikari, Betty Walton, Christine Marie Bishop, Stephanie Moynihan, Pinkie Evans

Faculty Publications

The system of care (SOC) philosophy evolved into a framework to support access to effective behavioral health services for children. This study explored the use of the System of Care Implementation Survey (SOCIS) to monitor SOC development during one Midwestern state’s federal planning and expansion grants. Utilizing a translational framework, results showed that despite fluctuations in SOC factor implementation over time, state and local SOCs had mid-level development. Further, inferential analysis of select factors indicated that outreach and access to services and the skilled provider network were significantly worse over time. Significant improvement in the treatment quality was documented but …

International Trade In Health Services: Assessing The Patterns Of Trade In Global Healthcare Delivery, Tawnya Bosko May 2020

International Trade In Health Services: Assessing The Patterns Of Trade In Global Healthcare Delivery, Tawnya Bosko

Dissertations

This dissertation will contribute to the research on international trade in health services through the analyses of three distinct but related topics within international trade in health services. We recognize that different countries have varying health system structures and that advances in transportation and communication have enabled individuals to seek care outside of their home country, allowed countries to invest in foreign health systems and created a market whereby US health systems are promoting their services abroad. However, we don’t know which factors influence individuals, countries and institutions in seeking services and trade partners in the healthcare sector. This dissertation …

Commonsense Explanations Of Sparsity, Zipf Law, And Nash's Bargaining Solution, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Kittawit Autchariyapanitkul

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

As econometric models become more and more accurate and more and more mathematically complex, they also become less and less intuitively clear and convincing. To make these models more convincing, it is desirable to supplement the corresponding mathematics with commonsense explanations. In this paper, we provide such explanation for three economics-related concepts: sparsity (as in LASSO), Zipf's Law, and Nash's bargaining solution.

Chronic Poverty Among Youth In The United States, Kara Reed May 2020

Chronic Poverty Among Youth In The United States, Kara Reed

Ballard Brief

In the United States, 15.5 million children are living in poverty. The more time children spend in poverty, the more likely they are to continue to experience poverty as an adult. The cycle of intergenerational and chronic poverty is perpetuated by various factors. such as unsatisfied basic needs. lack of access to quality education, and issues related to underemployment and unemployment. As a result. youth in poverty are more likely to perform poorly in school, be exposed to and affected by crime. and experience health problems. Some leading practices for poverty focus on strengthening the quality of early childhood education. …

Protracted Refugee Situations In Kenyan Refugee Camps, Lorin Utsch May 2020

Protracted Refugee Situations In Kenyan Refugee Camps, Lorin Utsch

Ballard Brief

Kenya hosts over 491,000 refugees fleeing from persecution in some of the largest refugee camps in the world. Though intended as temporary, many refugees find themselves stuck in these camps for years, sometimes even generations, which then grants them the title of "protracted refugee." This perpetuation of a limbo state is brought on from continuing threats in their country of origin, existing xenophobia in public spheres, and an inability to establish themselves economically or socially outside of the camp. Protracted refugees feel a greater sense of social insecurity, increased mental health challenges, and increased vulnerability that can lead to exploitation. …

A Critical Audit Of Accuracy And Demographic Biases Within Toxicity Detection Tools, Jiachen Jiang May 2020

A Critical Audit Of Accuracy And Demographic Biases Within Toxicity Detection Tools, Jiachen Jiang

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

The rise of toxicity and hate speech on social media has become a cause for concern due to their effects on politics and the growth of extremist internet communities. The tools currently used to identify and eliminate harmful content have received widespread criticism from both the public and the academic community for their inaccuracies and biases. In our research, we set out to audit the performance of Perspective API, a toxicity detector created by research teams at Google and Jigsaw, on the language of users across a variety of demographic categories. We draw from Crenshaw's framework of intersectionality to discuss …

Video Killed The Drag Star: Identity Presentation, Language, And Queer Habitus, Hayley Neiling May 2020

Video Killed The Drag Star: Identity Presentation, Language, And Queer Habitus, Hayley Neiling

Graduate Theses

Pierre Bourdieu defines habitus as “the ability to produce classifiable practices and works, and the capacity to differentiate and appreciate these practices and products (taste), that the represented social world, i.e., the space of life-styles, is constituted” (170). In other words, habitus is the combination of our habits, perceptions, and presentations that are formed from the ingrained ideas of our society. Our habitus is both performed and perceived, and in this way, we gain cultural capital, which is the curating of knowledge, skills, and behaviors which demonstrate our value. Habitus is deeply affected by our position in society, particularly class. …

An Exploration Of Methods For Classifying Air-Written Letters From The Spanish Alphabet, Manuel Serna-Aguilera May 2020

An Exploration Of Methods For Classifying Air-Written Letters From The Spanish Alphabet, Manuel Serna-Aguilera

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The ability to recognize human activity, especially air-writing, is an interesting challenge as one could identify any letter from many languages. I intend to investigate this problem of air-writing, but with the added twist of including the following letters from the Spanish alphabet: Á, É, Í, Ó, Ú, Ü, and Ñ. With this new alphabet, I set out to see what kinds of classifiers work best and on what kinds of data, since letters can be represented in multiple ways.

My tracking system will consist of a regular camera and a subject who will draw with a brightly colored marker …

It's Complicated: President Trump's Relationship With Media, Joseph Iamele May 2020

It's Complicated: President Trump's Relationship With Media, Joseph Iamele

Honors Projects in History and Social Sciences

Through an evolution of presidential communication and the development of newer communications technology, a symbiotic relationship between the president and media outlets has emerged. The president, attempting to communicate his messages to as much of the American public as possible, relies on media to spread his messages. Media outlets, on the other hand, would rather focus on more negative or drama filled aspects of the presidency. This results from a profit motive in the media industry that requires outlets to continuously gain readership, viewership and, subscribers. The best way to gain these is not by reporting the president’s policy accomplishments, …

Young People, Social Media, And Impacts On Well-Being, Andreana Nop

School of Professional Studies

Millennials and Generation Z were born into an age where social media and digital technology have been integrated in nearly all aspects of their lives. While social media has proven to be a valuable communication tool in connecting with each other and sharing information, the long-term psychosocial effects are beginning to become more apparent as social media matures. This study analyzes what these effects are and how communication is impacted for these young people. It questions how young people can leverage social media and decrease harm. The study will be conducted through a literature review and analysis. Its goal is …
