A Qualitative Exploration Of The Experiences Of Students Attending Interprofessional Schwartz Rounds In A University Context, Dominique Clancy, Annie Mitchell, Cordet Smart May 2020

A Qualitative Exploration Of The Experiences Of Students Attending Interprofessional Schwartz Rounds In A University Context, Dominique Clancy, Annie Mitchell, Cordet Smart

More Faculty of Health Research

Schwartz Rounds are a cultural change initiative for interdisciplinary staff to reflect on their work to preserve the human connection. Their recent implementation in educational contexts means that there is limited research exploring the experience of students attending Rounds. This study aimed to develop understanding of how health-care students experience participation at Schwartz Rounds in a University context. Using an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight health-care students about their experience of attending Rounds. Three themes were identified: ambivalence about safety to share “would it reflect badly on me?”; unifying through sharing emotions “you’re not alone …

Health Care Access For Children In Latinx Immigrant Families In The Greater Philadelphia Area, Sophia King

Politics Honors Papers

This work examines the gap that exists in access to health care in the Greater Philadelphia Region for children of Latinx immigrant families in comparison to other children in the nation. It provides a critical analysis of the gap in access to coverage, noting that this exists despite wide support for a human right to health. This study draws on existing scholarly research as well as interviews with staff at two health clinics and one community outreach center that are located in Greater Philadelphia. It demonstrates that Latinx immigrant families are less likely to have health insurance and get primary …

The Qualitative Report

Information and communication technology (ICT) is a strong force for economic, social, political, and educational reforms happening throughout the world including in developing countries. In this qualitative inquiry, we aimed at elaborating factors affecting ICT integration during teaching practices in pre-service teacher training programs (PTTPs) of three Indonesian universities from the perspectives of fifty-five pre-service teachers. The thematic analysis of this study revealed two major themes, barriers and enablers, which affected the integration of ICT during teaching practices. Based on the themes, this study led to the development of a conceptual model of factors affecting the ICT integration. Recommendations are …

Addressing The Argument Writing Needs Of English Learners In Seventh Grade, Cassidy Hamilton May 2020

Addressing The Argument Writing Needs Of English Learners In Seventh Grade, Cassidy Hamilton

Masters Theses/Capstone Projects

The purpose of this curriculum development project was to address the writing needs of English learners (ELs) in the seventh grade English/ Language Arts classroom through modifying the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project’s (TCRWP) Art of Argument Writing Unit with the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) model. The curriculum developed by TCRWP required modifications to support ELs in achieving the academic demands of today’s schools. One framework that supports ELs in the classroom is the SIOP model, which is grounded in 15 years of research (Echevarria, Vogt, & Short, 2013). The curriculum developed within this project used the TCRWP …

Inequality In Ethnic Representation In Secondary-School Literature Textbooks And National Examination In Vietnam, Anh Nguyen May 2020

Inequality In Ethnic Representation In Secondary-School Literature Textbooks And National Examination In Vietnam, Anh Nguyen

Honors Projects

This essay studies the dynamic between ethnic minorities and majority in the Vietnamese education system. By examining the appearance and representation of ethnic minorities in national literature curriculum, textbooks, and examinations, the analysis reflects the government's perspectives regarding the “appropriate” portrait of ethnic minorities' heritage and relationship with the majority. The study finds that Vietnamese education framework and content comply with the national construct of a Vietnamese identity across ethnicities. The state determines educational materials and selectively permits only aesthetic, politically benign, and Kinh-like narratives of ethnic minorities’ cultures, many written and/or chosen by Kinh authority rather than the ethnic …

A Longitudinal Investigation Of The Efficacy Of Online Expressive Writing Interventions For Hispanic Students Exposed To Traumatic Events: Competing Theories Of Action, Michiyo Hirai, Serkan Dolma, Laura L. Vernon, George A. Clum

Psychological Science Faculty Publications

Objective: Although expressive writing (EW) appears efficacious for treating a range of posttraumatic stress (PTS) symptoms including diagnosed PTSD, little is known about its efficacy when offered online and for ethnic/cultural minority populations such as Hispanic individuals. The current study examined the longitudinal effects of two online EW tasks for treating PTS symptoms in a Hispanic student sample.

Design: Seventy-one participants who had experienced a traumatic event were randomly assigned to either an emotion-focused (EM) writing group or a fact-focused (FC) writing group and completed online writing sessions for three consecutive days. Participants completed online assessments at 1-week, 1-month, and …

History Of Lutheranism In Liberia: The Current State Of Lutheran Churches In Liberia As A Result Of Their History And Development, Edward Momoh Kollie May 2020

History Of Lutheranism In Liberia: The Current State Of Lutheran Churches In Liberia As A Result Of Their History And Development, Edward Momoh Kollie

Master of Art Theology Thesis

Kollie, Edward M. “History of Lutheranism in Liberia.” Master of Arts Thesis, Concordia Seminary, 2020. 68pp.

This thesis presents a study of the society within which the church exists, how it was initiated by missionaries, including a historical analysis of the impact the mission status had on the Lutheran churches in Liberia. This thesis, in line with other scholars, points out ways mission churches established in Liberia were wholly dependent on their mission partners for support, propagation, and governing. The conclusions drawn lead to suggestions for ways the church may be able to graduate from the dependent status to viewing …

Learning About Two Immigrant Families' Educational Experiences And Educational Needs For Cultural Transmission From Trigenerational Family Storytelling, Kimvy V. Calpito May 2020

Learning About Two Immigrant Families' Educational Experiences And Educational Needs For Cultural Transmission From Trigenerational Family Storytelling, Kimvy V. Calpito

Theses & Dissertations

Research Focus. It is estimated that approximately one-third of children in the United States will be raised in immigrant families (Feliciano & Lanuza, 2017). Due to generational gaps and language mismatches from acculturation, immigrant family members tend to have difficulty communicating and interacting with one another (Buckingham & Brodsky, 2015; Ng, He, & Loong, 2004; Simes & Pietka-Nykaza, 2015). The researcher experienced similar challenges growing up, which led to her interest in studying how cultural differences among family members impact their dynamics. This research is important because it pertains to a large and growing group in our community as well …

The Contribution Of The Catholic Church To Post-Civil War Conflict Resolution In Chad, Rimasbé Dionbo Jean Claude May 2020

The Contribution Of The Catholic Church To Post-Civil War Conflict Resolution In Chad, Rimasbé Dionbo Jean Claude

Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations

I argue that if Chadian society continues to feel the effects of the 1979 civil war, then it is because solutions or an adequate method of approaching the conflict have not been applied. On the one hand, there is a lack of clear political will in the management of the battle, and on the other hand, civil society, including the Church, has not been sufficiently involved in the process of conflict resolution. For there to be social harmony, the Chadian people need a consequent reconciliation. Because of the influential presence of the Catholic Church in Chadian society, we consider it …

The Oracle Against Israel (Amos 2:6-8): In The Context Of The Oracles Against The Nation (Amos 1:3--2:8), Alfred Emeka Amos May 2020

The Oracle Against Israel (Amos 2:6-8): In The Context Of The Oracles Against The Nation (Amos 1:3--2:8), Alfred Emeka Amos

Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations

Amos 2:6-8, commonly referred to as the Oracle Against Israel constitutes the focus of this study. The oracle deals primarily with domestic crimes committed against right relationship among members within the Israelite community (as enshrined in the covenant). However, this oracle against Israel is conspicuously situated within a cycle of oracles, characteristically known as the Oracles Against the Nations. This study argues that this placement of the Oracle Against Israel (Amos 2:6-8) is not accidental. Rather it serves as the culmination of the Oracles Against the Nations (Amos l :3-2:8) disclosing that when injustice reigns within a nation, it reaps …

Flipgrid And Second Language Acquisition Using Flipgrid To Promote Speaking Skills For English Language Learners, Annelise Difilippantonio-Pen May 2020

Flipgrid And Second Language Acquisition Using Flipgrid To Promote Speaking Skills For English Language Learners, Annelise Difilippantonio-Pen

Master’s Theses and Projects

Integrating twenty-first century skills within the classroom has become a global driving force within the educational field. While schools have adopted models of one-to-one technology or digital formats for native English speakers, addressing the twenty-first century skills for English language learners have been absent. Given that the present global society is driven on bilingualism and multilingualism, English language learners need to be given the equitable digital opportunity to build their twenty-first century skills. The purpose of this mixed methods research study is to explore the influence and use of the digital application, Flipgrid, on the oral, English development for foundational, …

Embracing Écriture Inclusive Students Respond To Gender Inclusivity In The French Language Classroom, Rebecca Lynn Garbe May 2020

Embracing Écriture Inclusive Students Respond To Gender Inclusivity In The French Language Classroom, Rebecca Lynn Garbe

Honors Program: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

In 2017, the French Academy published a declaration opposing the official integration of écriture inclusive into the French language for fear that it would put it in “péril mortel.” Specifically, the Academy targeted a newly proposed punctuation, le point milieu, or the middot, that would allow those writing in French to express both the masculine and feminine endings of words with a dot between the two. This addition would disrupt traditional gendered interpretations within the language and make space, not only for the goals of French feminists, but also for visibility of non-binary French-speaking people. The Academy argued, however, …

The Grammatical Class Effect Is Separable From The Concreteness Effect In Language Learning, Katherine I. Martin, Natasha Tokowicz May 2020

The Grammatical Class Effect Is Separable From The Concreteness Effect In Language Learning, Katherine I. Martin, Natasha Tokowicz

Articles

Typically concrete words are learned better than abstract words (Kaushanskaya & Rechtzigel, 2012), and nouns are learned better than verbs (Kauschke & Stenneken, 2008). However, most studies on concreteness have not manipulated grammatical class (and vice versa), leaving the relationship between the two unclear. Therefore, in two experiments we examined the effects of grammatical class and concreteness simultaneously in foreign language vocabulary learning. In Experiment 1, English speakers learned ‘foreign language’ words (English pseudowords) mapped to concrete and abstract nouns and verbs. In Experiment 2, English speakers learned German words with the same procedure. Overall, the …

The Future Of Mindfulness In The Workplace, Aidan Serrano May 2020

The Future Of Mindfulness In The Workplace, Aidan Serrano

Honors Projects in Management

Having employees who are more mindful in the workplace, holds the potential to transforms every aspect of a company. By being more aware of themselves and the worlds they operate in, workers could find opportunities to improve their own experience and the way they interact with each other, customers, stakeholders, and more broadly how they plan and prepare for the future. Although there is much interest in these programs among companies today, efforts to realize the benefits are still embryonic and face many challenges. Of companies who have launched programs, many have been around for three years or less and …

Approach To Modeling And Control Of Operational Modes For Chemical And Engineering System Based On Various Information, Batyr Orazbayev, Dinara Kozhakhmetova, Kulman Orazbayeva, Balbupe Utenova

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Method on development of mathematical models for chemical and engineering system (CES) in the conditions of deficit and illegible initial information is presented based on system approach and use of the available information sources. The method is implemented when developing models of chemical and engineering system of reforming block used for the production of high-quality gasoline. Mathematical problem definitions for control and selection of effective operating modes for chemical and engineering system are formalized and obtained on the basis of mathematical modeling. Based on principles of relative assumption and equality principles, heuristic algorithm is developed for the solution of formulated …
