The Problem Of Freedom Between Individual And Society In The Philosophy Of John Dewey, Mohamed Samari Raheema Al-Kaabi
The Problem Of Freedom Between Individual And Society In The Philosophy Of John Dewey, Mohamed Samari Raheema Al-Kaabi
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
The present study deals with the concept of freedom in one of the most important contemporary philosophers i.e., John Dewey , who introduced a different view on it . He emphasized on the idea of real freedom away from utopia , in accordance with his pragmatist instrumental philosophy . He attempted to contribute in adapting individual character to develop the society and construct the state through his claim to apply freedom suitably with contemporary reality in every aspect of life .That was by introducing the effective solutions for the problem of relation between individual freedom and society freedom.

The Realization Of Adjacency Pairs And The Violation Of Leech’S Modesty Maxim In Trump’S Interview With Julie Pace., Imad Hayif Sameer, Muhammed F. Abdulrazaq
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
The occurrence of adjacency pairs is due to the fact that the utterance of one speaker requires a response of a particular kind. These two pairs are called adjacency pairs where the first part of them can make a choice between two responses.
A request is one type of adjacency pairs that may have two answers; either preferred (acceptance) or dispreferred (refusal). Adjacency pairs refer to or stand for conversational sequences in which the utterance by one speaker determines the utterance produced by another speaker. Adjacency pairs can be manifested in different types which are: offer, accusation, blame, question and …
The Translation Of English Comment Clauses In Shakespeare's Othello Into Arabic, Alayth N. Muhammed
The Translation Of English Comment Clauses In Shakespeare's Othello Into Arabic, Alayth N. Muhammed
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
Comment clauses (or parentheticals) are a type of clauses which are syntactically disconnected from the clause to which they are attached and which are syntactically incomplete (lack complementation). They show a reflection of the main clause, commentary or assessment on the main clause and hence show more spatial flexibility, lower tone, and semantic independence .
The present study focuses on comment clauses as pragmatic markers and the implicit meaning carried by these clauses .The problem is that most translators overlook this type of clauses because of their unawareness of the implied meaning carried by such clauses, especially when they translate them.It is hypothesized …
An Investigation Of Conversational Implicature Of Functional Words In Some Selected English Exchanges, Faiza Qanbar Ali
An Investigation Of Conversational Implicature Of Functional Words In Some Selected English Exchanges, Faiza Qanbar Ali
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
English is a stress-timed language in that content words (i.e. in connected speech including nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs are stressed whereas functional words including articles, prepositions, pronouns, auxiliaries and conjunctions are unstressed. Nonetheless, functional words have come strong (i.e. they are stressed) under certain circumstances. Accordingly, the main aim of the current study is to investigate the implied meaning of functional words in some selected conversational exchanges that have been downloaded from the internet . The main concluding points that the study has reached can be summarized as follows: firstly, it is found that functional words have both strong …

Deixis In Virginia Woolf's To The Lighthouse, Badr Abdul Qayoom Abdulla, Abdul Hamid Ahmed Al-Madari
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
Deixis is one of the sub-categories of pragmatics. It plays a very crucial role in making the context understandable. Obviously, understanding the deictic items in a literary text will make the process of interpretation easier. The objective of this research paper is to analyze deixis in Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse. The process of analysis is confined to some samples of the types of deixis that are used in the novel. The use of deictic items in To the Lighthouse participates in enriching the meaning and conveying certain effects. Through the use of deixis, Woolf succeeds in clarifying many …
Interference In The Use Of The Term (Anaphora) - Criticism And Analysis, Sulaf Mustafa Kamil
Interference In The Use Of The Term (Anaphora) - Criticism And Analysis, Sulaf Mustafa Kamil
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
The mechanisms of contemporary interpretation deal with “anaphora” in general and look for the term of “anaphora” with a great interest in the framework of reception. Thus, defining the internal and external world of the text is considered a touchstone for the recipient to interpret the text. Accordingly, the term “anaphora” has acquired a wide range space of study in the field of textual linguistics which transfers from the limited scope of sentence into the wide range space of the text. Therefore, the need for the textual comparison and analysis have also emerged among the ancient expounders and rhetoricians .The …
The Wandering Jew Phenomenon: A Post-Diaspora Success, Mujtaba Al-Hilo, Mohamad Marandi
The Wandering Jew Phenomenon: A Post-Diaspora Success, Mujtaba Al-Hilo, Mohamad Marandi
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
For long, migration and diaspora have been perceived negatively, resulted from social and psychological turmoil. They are believed to produce devastating outcomes, as the loss of identity, cultural hybridity, psychological crises, and social instability. Theorists, as Homi Bhabha, believe that "unhomliness", having lost the feeling of possessing a home, may also result in migration and cultural diaspora, as Robin Cohen argues. Yet, it is an illegitimate overgeneralization. I tend to propose a new perspective in this regard. I believe that specific types of diasporas have come to collaborate hugely in the progress of individuals epistemologically, psychologically, socially, and intellectually. I …

Feature Level Review Table Generation For E-Commerce Websites To Produce Qualitative Rating Of The Products, Kumar Raja, S Pushpa
Future Computing and Informatics Journal
It is widely acknowledged today that E-Commerce business is growing rapidly. This is happened only because of people are completely depending on the ratings and reviews given by the customers who are already purchased and using the products. Online surveys, customer reviews on shopping sites are the key sources to understand customer requirements and feedback to help upgrade the product quality and achieve greater outcomes. Now the challenge is that whether those reviews came from product level or feature level will be the million dollar question. To overcome this problem we are proposing a new algorithm to give feature level …

Empire’S Informal Ties: Pioneer Anthropologists In Davao, 1904–1916, Patricia Irene; Dacudao
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
The five Americans who studied the indigenous Bagobo people in Davao from 1904 to 1916 did not adhere to the evolutionary anthropology championed by colonial administrator Dean Worcester. Their fieldwork, being either mostly self-supported or through the privately funded Field Museum of Natural History, was also financially independent of the government. Thisarticle studies their personal, academic, and professional quests in the context of museum collections, party politics, and changes in the discipline of anthropology. The circumstances of their visits and subsequent publications on Davao show that these pioneers pursued anthropology with a different direction, away from state stereotypes and imperial …

What Made The Masses Revolutionary?: Ignorance, Character, And Class In Teodoro Agoncillo’S The Revolt Of The Masses, Filomeno V.; Aguilar Jr.
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Regarded as a classic in Philippine historiography, Teodoro Agoncillo’s The Revolt of the Masses published in 1956 is examined to understand the author’s explanation of what made “the masses” revolutionary. The study finds a profound incoherence: Agoncillo posited literacy and political consciousness in explaining the explosion in the Katipunan’s membership, but throughout the book the dominant characterization of the masses was one of ignorance, gullibility, impulsiveness, irrationality, and treachery. The study explains this contradiction in light of Agoncillo’s blending of literature and history, the educated elite’s unquestioned assumptions about ignorance, and the ethos of the postwar “proletarian” writer.KEYWORDS: THE MASSES …

Play And Propaganda: The Sports Of The Ilustrados In Nineteenth-Century Europe, Micah Jeiel Perez
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
The adoption of nineteenth-century European sporting practices was a component in the ilustrados’ creation of a national identity. By highlighting the ilustrados’ participation in modernizing individual sports (e.g., gymnastics, fencing, and pistol shooting), thearticle shows how the adoption of foreign sports promised these young men from the Spanish Philippines an opportunity to stand on equal footing with their supposed betters. The constant training of the body was treated as a tool to maintain health, a weapon against vices, and an avenue to achieve excellence in a modern cultural space associated with ideals of masculinity and civilization.KEYWORDS: ILUSTRADO • SPORTS • …

Background: There are very few epidemiological studies investigating Parkinson's disease (PD) in Africa. The hundreds of local languages and dialects make traditional screening and clinical evaluation tools difficult to use.
Objective: The objective of the study was to validate two commonly used PD questionnaires in an African population.
Methods: The PD Screening Questionnaire (PDSQ) and Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire (PDQ-39) were modified and translated into Afrikaans, Setswana, and isiZulu and administered to a sample of healthy local residents. We assessed the internal consistencies and cluster characteristics of the questionnaires, using a Cronbach's alpha test and exploratory factor analysis. The questionnaires were …

Mixed Language Speech Recognition, Vladimir Vuskovic, Biraja Deo, Daisuke Ikeda, Purvi Shah
Defensive Publications Series
Users that provide spoken input mixed language are common in many geographies and application domains. Automatic speech recognition in such a context requires multiple natural language understanding (NLU) models to be run in parallel and their outputs to be combined. This disclosure describes techniques to improve the performance of such ASR models by the use of a ranking unit for language determination and assessment of whether the voice input makes sense. A response to the query is provided to the user in the language as determined by the ranking unit.

The Semantic Groups Of Prefixal Verbs In The Persian Language And Their Functional Equivalents (Using The Verb برداشتن [Bar-Dāštan] As An Example), Zokir Arifdjanov
The Light of Islam
The article discusses functional equivalent relationships that play an important role in the phenomenon of linguistic variation. Within the framework of the topic, the opinions of leading linguists are presented, analyzed and conclusions are given. It is emphasized that functional equivalents play a key role in expanding the possibilities of expression, and as one of the prefixal verbs with such characteristics in the Persian language, the verb برداشتن [bar-dāštan] is widely studied as an object of research and its lexical-semantic variants are defined. The lexical-semantic variants are classified, divided into semantic groups and the functional equivalents of each semantic group …
Cross-Language Phonetic Interference In Learning The Arabic Language, Yulduz Ismailova
Cross-Language Phonetic Interference In Learning The Arabic Language, Yulduz Ismailova
The Light of Islam
Structural changes in the system of higher education in our country require an increase in the role and improvement of the methodology of teaching students foreign languages. As we know, at one of the first stages in teaching Arabic pronunciation, students and teachers are faced with a phenomenon such as linguistic or interlanguage interference. As a result, some characteristic errors appear in the students ’speech, which impedes the formation of certain skills and abilities for the correct articulation of difficult-to-pronounce phonemes. The proposed article is devoted to the study of this phenomenon and the causes of its occurrence. Also, the …

Mahmud Koshgariy’S Views On Fonetic, Graphic And Morphological Characteristics Of Turkic Languages, Salima Rustamiy
The Light of Islam
The article discusses some issues of phonetics, graphics and morphology covered in the book «Divan lugat at-turk» by the first Turkic scholar Mahmud Kashgari who developed the theoretical foundations of the Turkic languages in the 11th century.
Mahmud Kashgariy in the book «Divanu lugati-t-Turk» elucidated the grammar of Turkic languages by means of Arabic language, methods and terms peculiar to Arabic linguistics. The article deals with the place of ḥarakat, ḥarf and the terms signifying their types in elucidating the phonetic and morphological peculiarities of Arabic and Turkic words.
Mahmud Kashgariy introduced for designating the sounds which are …

Learning Acoustic Word Embeddings With Dynamic Time Warping Triplet Networks, Denis Shitov, Elena Pirogova, Tadeusz A. Wysocki, Margaret Lech
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
In the last years, acoustic word embeddings (AWEs) have gained significant interest in the research community. It applies specifically to the application of acoustic embeddings in the Query-by Example Spoken Term Detection (QbE-STD) search and related word discrimination tasks. It has been shown that AWEs learned for the word or phone classification in one or several languages can outperform approaches that use dynamic time warping (DTW). In this paper, a new method of learning AWEs in the DTW framework is proposed. It employs a multitask triplet neural network to generate the AWEs. The triplet network learns acoustic representations of words …

Built Bodies: Representations Of Monstrous Transsexuality In The Frankenstein Film, 1945-1975, Carmilla M. Morrell
College of Communication Theses and Dissertations
This thesis considers the relationship between representations of the Frankenstein’s Monster on film and the transsexual identity to argue that they can be ontologically consolidated into the figure of the Monstrous transsexual: a constructed, hybrid being whose uncategorizability within conventionally rigid structures of sex and intolerable embodiment of incongrous “parts” renders them as simultaneously powerful with radical potential and vulnerable from ostracization, oppression, and hostility. By analyzing both Frankenstein films from the post-war era of 1945-1975 and the power dynamics of the gender clinics in which the modern understanding of transsexuality was established, this thesis demonstrates the ways in which …
Damage Control Interdisciplinarity: An Antidote To Death Despair In Military Medicine, Erika "Ann" Jeschke
Damage Control Interdisciplinarity: An Antidote To Death Despair In Military Medicine, Erika "Ann" Jeschke
Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy
“Diseases of despair” is a conceptually broad category used to describe the phenomenon of premature mortality caused by suicide, drug poisoning, and alcoholic liver disease. Central to this conceptualization of mortality is that death occurs too early in an entire population of individuals infected with social despair. Implicit in the diseases of despair construct is a powerful normative claim about the manner and time of death—that death is bad if it is contextualized in unwanted conditions and happens before reaching midlife. As such, diseases of despair ought to be reduced, if not eliminated. Interestingly, military medical research on combat casualties …
Praise In Written Feedback: How L2 Writers Perceive And Value Praise, Karla Coca
Praise In Written Feedback: How L2 Writers Perceive And Value Praise, Karla Coca
Theses and Dissertations
ESL writing teachers face the challenge of providing written feedback that is both effective and motivating to students. Thus, many end up making use of praise (or positive feedback) before offering criticism. Past research, however, has not put enough emphasis in how students receive praise. In fact, Hyland and Hyland’s (2001) article is one of the few and most recent works to focus on praise above other types of feedback. Yet, they have not accounted for the possibility of different types of praise as Kamins and Dweck (1999) have suggested. In our study, two types of praise (person and performance) …
Teacher Lore Concerning Teaching English Language Learners In Urban Schools: A Reciprocal Determinist Analysis, Helen Clare Colby
Teacher Lore Concerning Teaching English Language Learners In Urban Schools: A Reciprocal Determinist Analysis, Helen Clare Colby
Theses and Dissertations
Changing patterns of immigration have caused schools in the U.S., which previously encountered few to no English Language Learners (ELLs), to see classrooms filled with many ELLs (Massey & Capoferro, 2008; Walker et al., 2004). Existing research on teaching ELLs focused heavily on the work of pre-service or early years educators’ teaching in secondary or post-secondary settings (de Courcy, 2011; Flynt, 2018; Rahman et al., 2018). This study uncovered the teacher lore of four veteran teachers of ELLs employed at a Title I, urban elementary school in the Rocky Mountain region. Data collection and analysis utilized techniques of narrative research, …
Language-Mediated Eye Behaviors During Storybook Reading As Afunction Of Preschool Language Ability, Emily Joy Nicholls
Language-Mediated Eye Behaviors During Storybook Reading As Afunction Of Preschool Language Ability, Emily Joy Nicholls
Theses and Dissertations
Children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) are at risk for reading disability and academic failure, and there remains a lack of scientific consensus about the underlying deficits that may explain their language difficulties. This study examined how language ability predicts preschoolers' eye movements during a naturalistic storybook reading task, a possible indicator of comprehension processes in real-time. We used eye-tracking measures to examine comprehension processes in 49 preschoolers with wide-ranging language abilities, using language skill as a continuous predictor variable. Participants viewed and listened to a storybook presented on an eye-tracking computer. Portions of each illustration that corresponded with a …
Examining The Association Between Interviewer And Respondent Speaking Pace In Telephone Interviews, Angelica Nicole Phillips
Examining The Association Between Interviewer And Respondent Speaking Pace In Telephone Interviews, Angelica Nicole Phillips
Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Telephone interviewers are typically trained to speak at a pace of two words-per-second to enhance respondent cognitive processing. Although interviewer speaking pace varies across different question characteristics such as question length and complexity, the pace at which respondents answer questions in a telephone survey and whether pace varies by question characteristics has received scant attention. Furthermore, although there is a longstanding hypothesis that the speed at which interviewers ask questions influences the speed of respondent replies and that this in turn influences the quality of answers provided by respondents, few empirical studies directly examine the relationship between interviewer speaking pace …
The Development And Preliminary Evidence Of Validity And Reliability Of A Spanish Static And Dynamic Assessment Of Decoding, Kayla Brooke Ditty
The Development And Preliminary Evidence Of Validity And Reliability Of A Spanish Static And Dynamic Assessment Of Decoding, Kayla Brooke Ditty
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the current study was to develop and administer a Spanish static and dynamic assessment of decoding and other important reading measures. Using the best available resources regarding Spanish literacy acquisition and Spanish language development, a preliminary Spanish dynamic and static screener was developed. The resulting test was named the Spanish Dynamic Decoding Measure (S-DDM) and is a counterpart to the original DDM available in English. This test contains three subtests: decoding, phonemic awareness, and word identification. The S-DDM was administered to eight bilingual Spanish-English speaking students with varying levels of Spanish language ability and reading proficiency in …
Mystic Identifications: Reading Kenneth Burke And “Non-Identification” Through Asian American Rhetoric, Nathan D. Wood
Mystic Identifications: Reading Kenneth Burke And “Non-Identification” Through Asian American Rhetoric, Nathan D. Wood
Theses and Dissertations
Krista Ratcliffe’s term “non-identification” offers a version of identification that assumes identity is not always identifiable. As an attitude that fosters cross-cultural listening, non-identification asks us to listen to others from a place of “neutrality,” with “hesitancy,” “humility,” and “pause” in order to consider identity’s fluid nature (73). This thesis first argues that this term might also describe speaking strategies premised on non-identifiability. As I’ll show, an inventive non-identification would articulate some rhetorical strategies that neither “identification” nor “disidentification” currently articulate. However, rhetorical scholars need more theoretical and practical guidance for what this kind of speech looks like. So, this …
Effect Of Positive And Negative Emotion On Naming Accuracy In Adults With Aphasia, Courtney Paige Nielsen
Effect Of Positive And Negative Emotion On Naming Accuracy In Adults With Aphasia, Courtney Paige Nielsen
Theses and Dissertations
This is a preliminary study investigating the effects of emotion on a confrontational naming task in people with aphasia (PWA). Previous research investigating the effects of emotion on various language tasks in PWA has produced mixed findings with some suggesting a facilitative effect and others an inhibitory effect. Participants included 9 adults with aphasia as the result of a stroke, resulting in the presence of word-finding deficits (i.e., anomia). Participants named images in positive, negative, and neutral conditions. Responses were scored as either correct or incorrect; incorrect responses were coded further to illustrate individual error patterns. The majority of participants …
