A Systematic Media Frame Analysis Of 1.5 Million New York Times Articles From 2000 To 2017, Haewoon Kwak, Jisun An

Framing is an indispensable narrative device for news media because even the same facts may lead to conflicting understandings if deliberate framing is employed. Therefore, identifying media framing is a crucial step to understanding how news media influence the public. Framing is, however, difficult to operationalize and detect, and thus traditional media framing studies had to rely on manual annotation, which is challenging to scale up to massive news datasets. Here, by developing a media frame classifier that achieves state-of-the-art performance, we systematically analyze the media frames of 1.5 million New York Times articles published from 2000 to 2017. By …

Query Graph Generation For Answering Multi-Hop Complex Questions From Knowledge Bases, Yunshi Lan, Jing Jiang
Query Graph Generation For Answering Multi-Hop Complex Questions From Knowledge Bases, Yunshi Lan, Jing Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Previous work on answering complex questions from knowledge bases usually separately addresses two types of complexity: questions with constraints and questions with multiple hops of relations. In this paper, we handle both types of complexity at the same time. Motivated by the observation that early incorporation of constraints into query graphs can more effectively prune the search space, we propose a modified staged query graph generation method with more flexible ways to generate query graphs. Our experiments clearly show that our method achieves the state of the art on three benchmark KBQA datasets.

Improving Multimodal Named Entity Recognition Via Entity Span Detection With Unified Multimodal Transformer, Jianfei Yu, Jing Jiang, Li Yang, Rui Xia
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we study Multimodal Named Entity Recognition (MNER) for social media posts. Existing approaches for MNER mainly suffer from two drawbacks: (1) despite generating word-aware visual representations, their word representations are insensitive to the visual context; (2) most of them ignore the bias brought by the visual context. To tackle the first issue, we propose a multimodal interaction module to obtain both image-aware word representations and word-aware visual representations. To alleviate the visual bias, we further propose to leverage purely text-based entity span detection as an auxiliary module, and design a Unified Multimodal Transformer to guide the final …
Students' And Teachers' Perception Of Rapport Management Strategies Used By Teachers, Lobna Sherif
Students' And Teachers' Perception Of Rapport Management Strategies Used By Teachers, Lobna Sherif
Theses and Dissertations
The present comparative study explores the perceptions of both students and teachers towards rapport-building behaviors, including the similarities and differences in their respective perceptions of such behaviors. Previous research posits that building rapport in classrooms has been correlated with deeper student engagement and higher motivation towards the course, thereby enabling students to enjoy the learning process itself. An array of rapport- building strategies has been explored, including learning students’ names, showing respect towards the students, and using humor in the classroom. A total of 129 students and 51 teachers filled out a perception questionnaire consisting of 26 teacher traits and …

A Literature Review Of Family Engagement With African Immigrant And Refugee Families, Jordan Timmons, Jodi Dworkin
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
In recent years, the ethnic and cultural diversity of the U.S. has increased as large numbers of immigrants and refugees have resettled here. Many of the recent immigrants and refugees have arrived from African countries, and human scientists and Extension professionals must be prepared to engage with the families. To inform the work of professionals, a comprehensive search of the literature on family engagement in K-12 education and out-of-school time with African families was conducted using multiple keywords in several database searches. Two books and three peer-reviewed journal articles were identified that focused on family engagement with African families. After …

Proximity And The Pox: Pathologizing Infidelity In Marston’S Dutch Courtesan, Andrew Fleck
Literatures and Cultural Studies Faculty Publications
Marston’s Dutch Courtesan links the dangers of sexually transmitted infection and false religious doctrine, both spread by the Family of Love. The play finds dark comedy in the syphilis epidemic that urban sexual promiscuity perpetuated and in ridiculous religious heterodoxy. Both seem to thrive on infidelity. By making the tavern-owning Mulligrubs, the sex worker Franceschina, and her bawd Mary Faugh members of the Family of Love, Marston makes the corporeal dangers of illicit sex during an epidemic even more dangerous when its companion is the contagion of Familism, threatening to spread as efficiently as the syphilis ravaging early modern London.

Inquiry was focused on each participant’s understanding of the concept of dimensionality as an interaction during the practice of DvT. Interviews were conducted remotely using a video conferencing platform after participants were provided with written working definitions of the terms to review. Transcripts provided raw data for analysis. Using a focused coding method followed by theory construction, four major themes emerged: Therapeutic Frame, Dramatic Core, …

More Than Words For Working With Children And Families, Barr V Campbell, M Lavelle
Plymouth Institute of Education
The focus for this special issue arose as a result of noticing the emerging challenges being made to “traditional,” neoliberal understandings of knowledge and knowing coupled with the strengthening international interest in the professionalization of the early years workforce, who, it might be argued, have worked hard to create a knowledge base from which to grow their understanding of the child. This knowledge base has, to some extent, been dominated by hegemonic discourses of developmentalism— absorbed into policy and standardized within some, if not many, education programs for early years practitioners. These two elements combined offered the opportunity to consider …

Krithi: Cows At The Beach: Improvising Carnatic-Jazz, Toby Wren, Suresh Vaidyanathan
Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai
Intercultural creative practice is a topic that has attracted a lot of recent scholarly attention. As improvising musicians from very different cultures and traditions, we decided to analyse a recent collaborative performance that we were involved in to unpack the ways that we were interacting through music. As performers, we were interested primarily in the ways that such an analysis would help us to work more effectively in intercultural situations, but we also wanted to understand the synergies and dissonances that exist between improvising cultures more broadly. For the essay we adopt the musical form of a krithi, a …

Applying Psychological Reactance Theory To Intercultural Communication In The Workplace: Dealing With Technological Change And Tolerance For Ambiguity, Oumaima Boulhna
Theses and Dissertations
Psychological reactance theory has yet to be applied to intercultural and cross-cultural communication, at least not to a sufficient extent. This study conducted a cross-cultural examination of psychological reactance in intercultural workplace communication situations. Using the theoretical framework of psychological reactance as well as the constructs of intercultural sensitivity and tolerance for ambiguity, this study expanded applications of PRT for technological change messages in the workplace. The present study extended the previous applications of psychological reactance theory and found a significant cross-cultural variation for trait reactance. The results also revealed that tolerance for ambiguity was negatively related to trait reactance, …
