Monsters In The Borderlands: Designer-Academics In Action, Philip Ely, Qassim Saad, Dianne Smith Aug 2020

Monsters In The Borderlands: Designer-Academics In Action, Philip Ely, Qassim Saad, Dianne Smith

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Much attention has been paid to how design – as an activity and a discipline – takes shape, with a focus on the professional designer. This paper explores a different kind of design practitioner - the ‘designer-academic’ - who holds a unique position at the border of pedagogy, practice and research in the creation not only of new ‘things’, but also processes and ways of working. Taking a reflective look at two projects over a emergent over a thirty-six month period we provide a glimpse into the everyday complexities of design research-in-action. We argue that we should look at designer-academics …

Identifying And Addressing Unintended Values When Designing (With) Artificial Intelligence, Niya Stoimenova, Maaike Kleinsmann Aug 2020

Identifying And Addressing Unintended Values When Designing (With) Artificial Intelligence, Niya Stoimenova, Maaike Kleinsmann

DRS Biennial Conference Series

A fundamental shift in the way society operates is approaching due to the prevalent adoption of self-learning technology like Artificial Intelligence (AI). Defined by the well-pronounced incongruence between their initial purpose and the values delivered to their multifaceted users, AI-powered systems are already being deployed in crucial social institutions such as hospitals, banks and courtrooms. To solve this tension, we first identify design practices that are suitable for the context of AI. Then we introduce a framework of three logical inferences that could aid designers to deliberately and continuously identify and address unintended values AI-powered solutions produce. The paper is …

Decolonial-Hispanophone Curriculum: A Preliminary Sketch And Invitation To A South-South Dialogue, James C. Jupp, Micaela González Delgado, Freyca Calderón Berumen, Caroline A. Hesse Aug 2020

Decolonial-Hispanophone Curriculum: A Preliminary Sketch And Invitation To A South-South Dialogue, James C. Jupp, Micaela González Delgado, Freyca Calderón Berumen, Caroline A. Hesse

Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

In our essay, we advance a preliminary sketch of decolonial-Hispanophone curriculum and extend an invitation for a South-South dialogue between students, teachers, or activist educators from distinct intellectual traditions of the geo-regions called “the Americas.” After sharing provisional definitions, we plant the problem of doing curricular-pedagogical work within a historical trajectory emphasizing historical colonies and present-day coloniality. Planted in this way, we provide a preliminary sketch of decolonial-Hispanophone curriculum as one dimension of a transnational, contextual, and relational decolonial project. From this sketch, we theorize three historicized concepts: (a) the historicity of decolonial thought, (b) mestizx conceptualization, and (c) communality/pluriversality. …

Let’S Get Graphic: The Integration Of Visual Representations To Demonstrate Learning, Courtneay Kelly Aug 2020

Let’S Get Graphic: The Integration Of Visual Representations To Demonstrate Learning, Courtneay Kelly

Virginia English Journal

Students derive meaning from knowledge that is presented to them in various ways. An instructor may present information through different modalities, though direct verbal instruction is the mode most often employed (Beesley & Apthorp, 2010). Research indicates that, when information is constructed through the use of visual representations, students gain deeper and more enduring understanding of the content (Jewitt, 2008; Kress, 1997). This article provides an explanation and definition of nonlinguistic and linguistic visual representations, a review of what research indicates in the integration of them, and examples of the inclusion of concept-based visual representations in a college course that …

Knowledge, Attitudes, Behaviors And Environmental Health Needs Of Latinas In Cleaning Occupations, Erin Ihde

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Background: Population health, including research and educational outreach, are quickly becoming mainstays at large tertiary care medical centers around the U.S. In fulfilling this mission, it is essential to understand underserved and underrepresented communities, including any unique health challenges faced.

In New Jersey, the Latino population ranks seventh largest in the country with 1,730,000 Hispanics, or 19 percent of the population throughout the state. Yet there may be underrepresentation in health research and a lack of understanding of key health needs faced by this population. This underrepresentation is impacted by several factors, including lack of health insurance and poverty. …

Background: The goal of the Global Health in Preconception, Pregnancy and Postpartum (HiPPP) Alliance, comprising consumers and leading international multidisciplinary academics and clinicians, is to generate research and translation priorities and build international collaboration around healthy lifestyle and obesity prevention among women across the reproductive years. In doing so, we actively seek to involve consumers in research, implementation and translation initiatives. There are limited frameworks specifically designed to involve women across the key obesity prevention windows before (preconception), during and after pregnancy (postpartum). The aim of this paper is to outline our strategy for the development of the HiPPP Consumer …

Witnessing Intimate Partner Violence Across Contexts: Mental Health, Delinquency, And Dating Violence Outcomes Among Mexican Heritage Youth, Lela Rankin Williams, Heidi Adams Rueda

Social Work Faculty Publications

Immigrant Mexican American (MA) youth are at greater risk for violence exposure due to risk factors associated with migration–postmigration processes and as they settle into urban U.S. communities marked by crime and poverty. Less is known about the contexts of this exposure. Specifically, what are the ecological contexts in which youth witness intimate partner violence (IPV), how do these experiences differ by immigration generational status, and what is the impact on youth’s externalizing and internalizing behaviors? MA adolescents (N = 279; 15–17 years, M = 16.17, SD = 0.81) from the Southwest United States participated in an online survey. …

The Experiences Of Teachers Successfully Teaching Reading To Black Students, Kevin Michael Walker Aug 2020

The Experiences Of Teachers Successfully Teaching Reading To Black Students, Kevin Michael Walker

Dissertations and Theses

Racist laws and subsequent educational policies and practices have resulted in schools in the United States failing to teach Black students reading. Historically, a racial achievement gap in elementary reading has existed throughout the history of the United States and has persisted to current times. As the population of students of color increases in the United States, we must investigate how teachers create equitable educational outcomes for students who have been historically underserved and oppressed by our education system. Teachers who are successful in ensuring our Black students have the opportunity to experience success in reading are actively disrupting the …

Role And Task Allocation Framework For Multi-Robot Collaboration With Latent Knowledge Estimation, M Gianni, Ms Uddin Aug 2020

Role And Task Allocation Framework For Multi-Robot Collaboration With Latent Knowledge Estimation, M Gianni, Ms Uddin

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

In this work a novel framework for modeling role and task allocation in Cooperative Heterogeneous Multi‐Robot Systems (CHMRSs) is presented. This framework encodes a CHMRS as a set of multidimensional relational structures (MDRSs). This set of structure defines collaborative tasks through both temporal and spatial relations between processes of heterogeneous robots. These relations are enriched with tensors which allow for geometrical reasoning about collaborative tasks. A learning schema is also proposed in order to derive the components of each MDRS. According to this schema, the components are learnt from data reporting the situated history of the processes executed by the …

The Girl In The Woods: On Fairy Stories And The Virgin Horror, Brendan Anderson Aug 2020

The Girl In The Woods: On Fairy Stories And The Virgin Horror, Brendan Anderson

Journal of Tolkien Research

This paper considers the ways in which Joss Whedon and J.R.R. Tolkien subvert the classic fairy-tale motif of the "girl in the woods" to engender horror. The author examines Whedon's work (specifically Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Cabin in the Woods) through the lens of Tolkien's essay "On Fairy-Stories" to show how a sense of horror can be created by denying the consolation of a happy ending. This approach is then applied to Tolkien's story of Aredhel and Eöl from The Silmarillion to demonstrate how Tolkien subverts his own theory to highlight the horrific social customs that perpetuate …

Can I Make The Language Mine? Dynamics And Implications Of Language Ownership Within Esol Classrooms, Megan Ellsworth Aug 2020

Can I Make The Language Mine? Dynamics And Implications Of Language Ownership Within Esol Classrooms, Megan Ellsworth

MA TESOL Collection

This paper discusses and investigates the concept of ownership with an interest in gathering information which may enable educators to empower learners towards possession and ownership of the English language. The literature review and discussion seek to understand ownership as an experience and the particular dynamics at play with English as the target language: perceptions, attitudes, larger contextual factors which may help or hinder the strength of language ownership. The resulting connection with the target language has an observable impact on the learners’ motivation and engagement with the language-both inside and outside of the classroom. Considering this research, analysis is …

Parent Perspectives On Accessing Resources For Children With Developmental Delays And Their Younger Siblings, Claire Chelladurai Aug 2020

Parent Perspectives On Accessing Resources For Children With Developmental Delays And Their Younger Siblings, Claire Chelladurai

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The benefits of early intervention for children with developmental delays is widely documented in the current literature (Goode et al., 2011; Koegel et al., 2014; Roberts & Kaiser, 2015; Smith et al., 2000). There is, however, a lack of research on what parents experience when accessing resources for their child with a developmental delay and younger siblings who may be at risk for a developmental delay. Through face to face qualitative interviews, the current study examined parent awareness of and experience accessing desired resources for children with developmental delays and their younger siblings. Through thematic analysis, four themes emerged: (a) …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Gloria Agumagu

Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Mentor: Gibbs Kanyongo, Ph.D.

Reading is one of the most important fundamental skills for academic success, yet the teaching of reading is very complex. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of pull-out reading interventions for struggling readers in grades K-8. The objective was to determine if there would be statistically significant mean differences between participants’ performance in reading following interventions. In a sample of immigrant “at-risk” students, n = 253 drawn from Catholic schools in the District of Columbia, dependent sample t tests revealed significant effects of pull-out interventions. …

Communication In The Ruins: Walker Percy And The Art Of Symbolic Mediation, Justin Bonanno Aug 2020

Communication In The Ruins: Walker Percy And The Art Of Symbolic Mediation, Justin Bonanno

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation proposes to explore the mediating function of the symbol through the work of Walker Percy. In the first chapter, I provide the necessary background for undertaking this project. First, I situate Percy in his historical moment and review key events in his life that helped to shape his philosophy of communication. Second, I sketch out some of the primary coordinates in Percy’s thought. Percy’s hermeneutic of the self requires an understanding of the difference between sign and symbol, dyadic and triadic events, environment and world, and immanence and transcendence. Third, I review some of the key intersections with …

From Case Study As Symptom To Case Study As Sinthome: Engaging Lacan And Irigaray On "Thinking In Cases" As Psychoanalytic Pedagogy, Erica Freeman Aug 2020

From Case Study As Symptom To Case Study As Sinthome: Engaging Lacan And Irigaray On "Thinking In Cases" As Psychoanalytic Pedagogy, Erica Freeman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation accomplishes two goals. First, this dissertation articulates a Lacanian account of the epistemological and historical presuppositions of the psychoanalytic case study genre, while engaging reflexively with extant Foucauldian scholarship on this genre as well as feminist psychoanalyst Luce Irigaray’s criticisms of Lacan. Irigaray’s critique is engaged in order to tarry with its implications for a Lacanian approach to the psychoanalytic case study genre. Second, this dissertation critically examines the significance of Lacan’s (re)reading, in Seminar V, of Joan Riviere’s (1929) “Womanliness as Masquerade” in the midst of his oral teachings on the psychoanalytic concepts of castration and …

Aphasia Friendly Medication Instructions: Effects On Comprehension In Persons With And Without Aphasia, Anna Saylor Aug 2020

Aphasia Friendly Medication Instructions: Effects On Comprehension In Persons With And Without Aphasia, Anna Saylor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Accessible health information supports people to understand and manage chronic medical conditions and is frequently presented via text. Comprehension of written health information becomes more difficult for people with language impairments, such as aphasia. Nine people with aphasia (PWA) and nine people without aphasia (PWoA), participated in this study. Each participant reviewed two unmodified medication instructions and two modified medication instructions using aphasia-friendly principles, then answered eight multiple choice questions and provided their preferences. Results showed that PWA demonstrated improved comprehension given modifications, but PWoA’s comprehension did not improve with modifications. Group comparison in the modified condition demonstrated that PWoA …

Afrosofia: Knowledge And Methode Chez Cheikh Anta Diop, Francois Kodena Aug 2020

Afrosofia: Knowledge And Methode Chez Cheikh Anta Diop, Francois Kodena

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Thinkers generally treat the concept of “philosophy” as a transparent term, defining it as the love of wisdom. However, a quick look at etymological dictionaries and Greek philosophers like Plato or Aristotle leads us nowhere. In other words, we are faced with a semantic conundrum. The verdict is discomforting: “philosophy” is not a Greek concept, and its etymology remains unknown.

This dissertation attempts to decipher that mystery. It leads us to the Afrikan terrain under the guidance of Cheikh Anta Diop and the Beti Mvett through a direct trans-disciplinarian (cultural, monogenetic, historical, linguistic, etc.) Afrosofian methodology.

Ultimately, the Beti So …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While international students greatly influence globalization with their diverse cultural backgrounds, they often encounter issues when adapting to a new academic, social, and cultural setting. The goal of this research question was twofold in nature in that it sought to not only explore the adjustment experiences of participants but also be able to see what resources and practices were found helpful and needed to be expanded upon in order to provide ways of redressing inequitable practices and contributing to pedagogical change to promote engagement and success of international undergraduate students. A thorough analysis of in-depth interviews considered both upstream and …

Survivors Of Human Trafficking: A Review Of Current Mental Health Practices And Recommendations For Improvement, Caleb Andreason Aug 2020

Survivors Of Human Trafficking: A Review Of Current Mental Health Practices And Recommendations For Improvement, Caleb Andreason

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Human trafficking is a global issue that is increasing in prevalence. For survivors and those exploited by human trafficking, the psychological, developmental, and physical health consequences of human trafficking are complex and often debilitating. Unfortunately, there continues to be a lack of attention regarding these issues in the professional psychology literature. A qualitative study was conducted that included nine semi-structured interviews of professionals working with survivors of human trafficking. The data were analyzed and themes were derived using content analysis. The results showed the need for long-term comprehensive care, but many principles found in the research literature have not yet …

Con Confianza: Using Community-Based Participatory Research Principles To Inform Community-Academic Partnership Practices And Build Trust In Hispanic Communities, Sharon Tafolla Aug 2020

Con Confianza: Using Community-Based Participatory Research Principles To Inform Community-Academic Partnership Practices And Build Trust In Hispanic Communities, Sharon Tafolla

Master's Projects and Capstones

Hispanic communities are at disproportionate risk for chronic diseases and researchers have cited the need for further community and culturally informed studies to improve research outcomes to either make treatments and interventions more generalizable or modify them to the needs of Hispanic communities. However, many of the same linguistic and cultural barriers to health care access and utilization also impact the ability for Hispanic groups to participate in research studies. Community Academic Partnerships (CAPs) are positioned to conduct culturally and linguistically competent research in Hispanic communities. For research in Hispanic communities to be effective, CAPs must prioritize practices that build …

Chronic Kidney Disease Prevention In The Hispanic/Latino Community: Sf Mission District, Michael Alba Huizar Aug 2020

Chronic Kidney Disease Prevention In The Hispanic/Latino Community: Sf Mission District, Michael Alba Huizar

Master's Projects and Capstones

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a growing medical condition that affects many Americans; however, the largest minority group living in the US, Hispanic/Latinos, are suffering the most complications associated with the disease. Multiple research has concluded that due to barriers such as poverty, limited education, and limited English proficiency, it has prevented many Hispanic/Latinos from knowing their disease status. My internship at the Community Health Resource Center was to create a CKD campaign in Spanish that targets the Hispanic/Latino community living in San Francisco's Mission District. As well, the Campaign's goal was to tackle the challenges that prevent Hispanic/Latinos in …

The Vicious Cycle Of Poverty And Unmet Community Health Needs In San Francisco’S Tenderloin (Tl) Neighborhood: Solutions Based On Stakeholder Perceptions, Joya Esagoff

Master's Projects and Capstones

A vicious cycle has arisen in San Francisco’s Tenderloin (TL) neighborhood, in which poverty contributes to significant health disparities, thwarting optimal health outcomes, thus further worsening the underlying poverty which takes on a generational and urban character. TL residents face core socioeconomic and public health challenges with regard to the following themes: access to and coordination of care and services; food security (including healthy eating and active living); housing security; safety from violence and trauma; social, emotional, and behavioral health; poverty; and infrastructure. Essential deficiencies in these domains individually and together worsen the community’s health outcomes. This Capstone examines these …

Yale Working Papers in Grammatical Diversity

Doxastic feel like is used to convey a belief or opinion, similar to think:

(1) I feel like your drawing is better than mine.

Doxastic feel like is an intriguing topic of study due to the potential for microsyntactic variation, along with the thick web of linguistic prejudice surrounding this construction. Doxastic feel like is primarily associated with stereotypes regarding age, gender, and intelligence. A survey was conduced to measure participants of diverse demographic backgrounds in their acceptability of feel like in different contexts. Overall, respondents were found to have high acceptability of this construction. In addition, respondents were …
