Music Interventions For A Child With Developmental Disabilities, Zishan Xiong
Music Interventions For A Child With Developmental Disabilities, Zishan Xiong
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This capstone thesis project explores a musical intervention (Development Interaction Through Music, DITM) for a 9-year-old girl with neurodevelopmental disorders in a school setting. Although there was research on the application of music therapy in different populations, there are relatively few documentations on music therapy in the field of special education. Some case studies have found that music therapy has a positive effect on people with developmental disorders (Thompson & McFerran, 2015). Clinicians need to engage in more clinical practice and collect case data as strong evidence. Music therapists who work with children with severe disabilities are recommended to build …

Artificial Intelligence For Rapid Meta-Analysis: Case Study On Ocular Toxicity Of Hydroxychloroquine., Matthew Michelson, Tiffany Chow, Neil A Martin, Mike Ross, Amelia Tee Qiao Ying, Steven Minton
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
BACKGROUND: Rapid access to evidence is crucial in times of an evolving clinical crisis. To that end, we propose a novel approach to answer clinical queries, termed rapid meta-analysis (RMA). Unlike traditional meta-analysis, RMA balances a quick time to production with reasonable data quality assurances, leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to strike this balance.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate whether RMA can generate meaningful clinical insights, but crucially, in a much faster processing time than traditional meta-analysis, using a relevant, real-world example.
METHODS: The development of our RMA approach was motivated by a currently relevant clinical question: is ocular toxicity and …
Assessing The Role Of Social Media Platforms In The Propagation Of Toxicity, Adewale Muyiwa Obadimu
Assessing The Role Of Social Media Platforms In The Propagation Of Toxicity, Adewale Muyiwa Obadimu
Theses and Dissertations
The increased global salience of social media has fueled the propagation of various forms of toxicity. As digital technologies and interactive websites proliferate, Online Social Networks (OSNs), once regarded as safe havens for sharing information and providing mutual support among groups of people, have now become breeding grounds for spreading toxic behaviors, political propaganda and radicalizing content. Numerous platforms are trying to combat this phenomenon by training computational methods that are capable of automatically recognizing these toxic contents and removing them from the user-generated text on their platforms. However, given the immensity and speed of content posted on online platforms, …

Supporting Science Learning For English Language Learners, Judith Morrison, Yuliya Ardasheva, Sarah Newcomer, Lindsay Lightner, Gisela Ernst-Slavit, Kira Carbonneau
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
This study focused on two fourth-grade science classrooms with English learners (ELs), exploring how teachers supported students’ science and language/literacy learning in different language contexts. Three a priori research-based practices recommended for supporting science learning framed our exploration: (a) negotiation, opportunities for individual and social construction and critique of knowledge; (b) embedded language, opportunities for language and literacy learning as a natural aspect of science; and (c) non-threatening learning environments, opportunities for social apprenticeship and interaction. We provide insights into how science instructional practices supported ELs’ science and language learning. One key implication is that enacting these three principles of …
Books As Objects Of Exchange: A Study Of Cross-Cultural Interaction And Connected Systems Between The Mughals And Ottomans, Ankita Choudhary
Books As Objects Of Exchange: A Study Of Cross-Cultural Interaction And Connected Systems Between The Mughals And Ottomans, Ankita Choudhary
Madison Historical Review
The cross-cultural relations between the Ottomans and their contemporaneous Islamic states of the Mughals, Uzbeks, and Khans of Crimea have mainly remained a desideratum, obscured by the modern boundaries of a nation-state. An examination of existing communication networks and cultural linkages renders a global dimension to the medieval Islamic empires united by a prevalent literary culture and shared connective systems. The availability of Persian manuscripts of South Asian origin in the Turkish museum, existing diplomatic ties with the Mughals alluded by Naimur Rahman Farooqi (Mughal-Ottoman Relations), and the confrontation with the Safavids indicate that conduits of interactions existed at both …
"The Violence Of Place And Pen" Identities And Language In The Twentieth-Century Historiography Of King Philip's War, Kevin A. March
"The Violence Of Place And Pen" Identities And Language In The Twentieth-Century Historiography Of King Philip's War, Kevin A. March
Madison Historical Review
This article traces the twentieth-century historiography of King Philip’s War, a destructive eleven-month conflict between New Englanders and their “Praying Indian” allies and a loose alliance of Southern Algonquians led by the Wampanoag sachem Metacom, or King Philip. Although widely impactful across New England, the war attracted little scholarly attention until the late 1950s, when historian Douglas E. Leach wrote Flintlock and Tomahawk. Leach’s book reignited the historical profession’s interest in the conflict and launched two significant and wide-ranging historiographic debates that are the subjects of this article. The first of these historiographic debates concerned the relationship between categories of …

Cultural Identity Development In Second Language Teacher Education: Toward A Negotiated Model, Hussein Meihami, Naser Rashidi
Cultural Identity Development In Second Language Teacher Education: Toward A Negotiated Model, Hussein Meihami, Naser Rashidi
The Qualitative Report
This is a two-phase study toward understanding the cultural identity development of the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers when they participated in cultural negotiation programs and developing a negotiated model of cultural identity development for the second language teacher education programs. To such ends, the analysis of the narratives authored by five experienced and four novice EFL teachers was done by using Wenger’s (1998) community of practice and Pennington’s (2014) TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) teacher identity model to track the cultural identity development of the EFL teachers during the cultural negotiation sessions. Then, by …

Circus In Motion: A Multimodal Exergame Supporting Vestibular Therapy For Children With Autism, Oscar Peña, Franceli L. Cibrian, Monica Tentori
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
Exergames are serious games that involve physical exertion and are thought of as a form of exercise by using novel input models. Exergames are promising in improving the vestibular differences of children with autism but often lack of adaptation mechanisms that adjust the difficulty level of the exergame. In this paper, we present the design and development of Circus in Motion, a multimodal exergame supporting children with autism with the practice of non-locomotor movements. We describe how the data from a 3D depth camera enables the tracking of non-locomotor movements allowing children to naturally interact with the exergame . A …

Chapter 3. Quantitative Perspectives To The Study Of Writing Across The Lifespan: A Conceptual Overview And Focus On Structural Equation Modeling, Matthew C. Zajic, Apryl L. Poch
Special Education and Communication Disorders Faculty Publications
As echoed throughout this edited collection, writing researchers are well aware of the complexities involved when adopting lifespan approaches to the study of written language. Writing researchers come from a wide array of fields (e.g., composition studies, rhetoric, psychology, education, and special education) that adopt different methodological approaches to answer a variety of research questions. A central issue to unpacking the complexities underlying the development of written language across the lifespan requires examining the available tools and methods offered by different research designs to pose and answer different types of research questions.

Special Education and Communication Disorders Faculty Publications
The value of writing is not limited to single points of time in our lives but serves many different purposes across the lifespan (Bazerman et al., 2018). For instance, young children begin to experiment with writing as early as two years of age, using it as a vehicle for play, communication, and self-expression (Rowe, 2008). With the advent of school, the purposes for writing expand greatly to include writing to inform, persuade, describe, summarize, learn, and narrate to identify just some of the ways children, adolescents, and young adults learn to write and use writing as part of their education. …
Adding Production To High Variability Phonetic Training, Caleb Crosby
Adding Production To High Variability Phonetic Training, Caleb Crosby
Honors Theses
The effectiveness of adding a production component to a High Variability Phonetic Training (HVPT) regimen to improve native Japanese speaker’s pronunciation of English [b], [v], [f], and [h] was investigated. L1 Japanese-speaking English learners were recruited as participants, and a pretest-posttest procedure was used to evaluate improvement at production of the target consonants. For the pretest and posttest, recordings were taken of participants pronouncing twelve tokens, and the recordings were rated for intelligibility by a phonetically trained native English-speaking rater. Participants were divided into two groups. Group A received only HVPT training, and group B received a regimen of half …
The Uses Of Character: Modernism And The Politics Of Characterization, Jared Matthew Klemp
The Uses Of Character: Modernism And The Politics Of Characterization, Jared Matthew Klemp
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
In The Uses of Character: Modernism and the Politics of Characterization, I analyze experiments with character in the British and Irish fiction of the early twentieth century. I argue that, though they are frequently treated as monolithic and apolitical, such experiments are heterogenous attempts to rehabilitate or revise national identities in response to historical and political pressures. Taking two emblematic figures of high modernism, James Joyce and Virginia Woolf, and another figure who is frequently left out of discussions of modernism, Flann O’Brien, I demonstrate that a shift in the construction of character reveals a shift in the author’s relationship …

‘Nouns That Cut Slices’: The Ontology And Ethics Of Stereotypes And Implicit Bias, Christiane Merritt
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Stereotypes and implicit bias have long been objects of psychological study. Recently, philosophers, too, have attempted to understand stereotypes and implicit bias: what kinds of mental states or objects are they? Are stereotypes epistemically deficient or ethically suspect? How do implicit biases affect behavior, and how might these biases be changed? This dissertation takes up these and related questions, advancing accounts of stereotyping and implicit bias informed by evidence from psychology.Chapter 1 sets the stage by conducting a critical survey of the history and development of today’s most widely used measures of implicit bias. Although the history of the different …

Experiences Of Latinx's Adult Transition To The U.S. And The Clinical Implications That Arise In Acclimating Into The Dominant Culture: An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis, Gabriela Olavarrieta
Doctoral Dissertations
There has been a significant gap in the literature regarding the lived experience of the Latinx adult transition to the United States and the clinical implications that arise in acclimating to the dominant culture, particularly under the Trump Administration. The approach for the current research examined Latinxs’ adulthood transitions to the United States, experiences of acculturative stress, including instances of discrimination as well as their experiences acclimating or assimilating into the dominant culture. This study also examined what seeking, or being unable to seek, mental health services looked like in the current sociopolitical climate. Interpretive phenomenological analysis was utilized to …
Exploring How Social Networks Contribute To African Immigrants’ Ability To Procure A Sustainable Livelihood In New York City, Richmond Opoku Donyina
Exploring How Social Networks Contribute To African Immigrants’ Ability To Procure A Sustainable Livelihood In New York City, Richmond Opoku Donyina
Capstone Collection
This research explores the effects of social networks on the ways that African immigrants in New York City secure, and sustain their livelihoods. Through lines of inquiry including social capital, livelihood resources, and economic activities, this research explores possible livelihood outcomes of Africans immigrants in New York City in relation to their social networks. By exploring themes through case studies of immigrants from different countries on the African continent, this research illustrates how becoming embedded in social networks in ones’ geographical jurisdiction widens an individual’s social capital, which in turn contributes to the probability of that individual in securing and …

Sino-African Economic Activity And Human Rights Abuses: Economic Enslavement Or Altruistic Assistance?, Ryan Westley Craig
Student Theses and Dissertations
This piece examines the role of increased economic activity in the form of aid, foreign direct investment, and trade of China towards African states in an effort to determine whether or not these phenomena are linked to the rising human rights abuses within these African States. Chinese policy states that, unlike traditional Western aid, their aid will be unconditional. A few pieces of scholastic work focus on this relationship qualitatively, but none have done so quantitatively. Here I strictly define the term human rights abuses. There has been previous scholarly debate on this subject. I also find a plethora of …

Investigating The Needs Of Foreign Language Learners Of Tuvan, Rossina Soyan
World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations
Where do you start the course design for a minority language? One starting point is identifying and surveying a community of possible learners. This paper explores the needs of learners of Tuvan, a language spoken primarily in the Republic of Tuva, Southern Siberia, Russia. The study was conducted in two steps: an online questionnaire (March 2019) and semi-structured interviews (April 2019). The results showed a limited interest in Tuvan as a foreign language (13 responses) on the one hand, but a long-standing one on the other, more than two decades in some cases. The identified learner needs fell into three …
Corpus-Based Data-Driven Learning In Reading English For Academic Purposes, Ira Rasikawati
Corpus-Based Data-Driven Learning In Reading English For Academic Purposes, Ira Rasikawati
Education Dissertations
One of the second language (L2) instructional approaches perceived as promising is data-driven learning (DDL) – the use of computer-generated concordances for language teaching and learning. DDL provides students with the opportunity to analyze language forms across contexts found in the concordance output. Notwithstanding the growing research support, DDL has not been widely adopted in L2 classrooms. Studies examining the use of DDL have mostly been carried out in a case study context with a small sample size. To bridge the gap between research and instructional practices, more empirical studies are needed to corroborate the claim that exposing students to …
Mount Banahaw’S Enigma Of Power: A Personal Reflection On Signs And Symbols At The Santa Lucia Complex, Katherine B. Arceta
Mount Banahaw’S Enigma Of Power: A Personal Reflection On Signs And Symbols At The Santa Lucia Complex, Katherine B. Arceta
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
In the Philippines, Mount Banahaw in Quezon province is a pilgrimage site for locals and believers alike. Considered a holy mountain or even a ‘new’ Jerusalem in a mystical sense, people flock to its forested sacred sites or puwestos. The objectives of this study are (1) to identify signs and symbols within the sacred space of Mount Banahaw; (2) to explain how signs and symbols within the mountain are able to convey various religious meanings to the worshippers and; (3) to understand how pilgrims derive and interpret the meanings associated with these signs and symbols. The author retraces a pilgrim’s …

The Imprint Of The Pilgrimage An Ethnography Of A Tattoo Studio In Jerusalem, Mustafa Diktaş
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Several major religions exhibit complex attitudes towards self-mutilation and adornment. Judaism, Islam, and Christianity forbid marking the body and associate it with sin. Still, many people apparently have continued to feel a need for confirmation of their religion and their religious journeys by marking their bodies. This ethnographic study focuses on the recent situation in pilgrimage tattooing, utilising the local and daily processes of a tattoo shop called Razzouk Tattoo located in the Christian quarter of the old city of Jerusalem. The aim of this paper is not only to give a panoptic view of the tattoo studio but also …
Taking Away The Sin Of The World: Egō Eimi And The Day Of Atonement In John, Jackson Abhau
Taking Away The Sin Of The World: Egō Eimi And The Day Of Atonement In John, Jackson Abhau
Studia Antiqua
The presence of Jewish themes and allusions in the Gospel of John has received much scholarly attention in recent decades. This study follows this trend, exploring several possible connections between the Day of Atonement and the Johannine narrative. In this paper, I argue that these connections—which include John the Baptist’s identification of Jesus with the Lamb of God, echoes of the scapegoat ritual, high-priest-like prayers, and the repeated use of the phrase egō eimi—were deliberately incorporated into the narrative by the author of John as pointed allusions to the Day of Atonement. For the original audience, as well as …

Raised Hands In Prayer As An Inducement Motif In The Psalms, Kelsie Cannon
Studia Antiqua
Two hands raised in the air is a commonly portrayed gesture in the Hebrew Bible and broader ancient Near East. Synthesizing previous research done on the same topic, this paper will strive to examine the gesture in order to show that its purpose is to induce and elicit divine favor from a superior being—typically a deity or king-like figure. The conclusion will be reached by first generally surveying the raised hands motif in the Hebrew Bible and then specifically examining the gesture in Psalms. This study will be complemented by exploring relevant extrabiblical textual and iconographic evidence within the ancient …

Credibility Assessment Of Fault Injection Simulation Based On Feature Selective Validation, Li Sheng, Yuxiao Li
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Aiming at the complexity and large number feature details of the data of fault injection simulation which lead to the difficulty for the single indicators or expert visual assessment methods to obtain the accurate assessment results, and the evaluation expert giving the interval complementary judgment matrix on the basis of AHP method which lead to the difficulty for the weights of credibility indicators to be determined, a multi-indicator comprehensive credibility assessment model based on Feature Selection Verification (FSV) is proposed. It can calculate the quantitative credibility values and the qualitative credibility values of the credibility indicators. In order …
