Communication And Culture In International Business – Moving The Field Forward, Betina Szkudlarek, Joyce S. Osland, Luciara Nardon, Lena Zander

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The centrality of communication in international business (IB) is undeniable; yet our understanding of the phenomenon is partially constrained by a cross-cultural comparative focus as opposed to intercultural, process-oriented research designs that capture the dynamic nature of communicative interactions. Our brief review of studies at the intersection of culture and communication in the context of global work interactions reveals the dominant research trends that guided IB scholarship to date in this domain. We propose eight shifts in perspective to advance the field's theorizing and create avenues for further research.

Narcissistic Pastors And The Making Of Narcissistic Churches, Darrell Puls Oct 2020

Narcissistic Pastors And The Making Of Narcissistic Churches, Darrell Puls

Great Commission Research Journal

Can churches take on the pathological behaviors associated with narcissism through the influence of a narcissistic pastor? While there is a large body of literature on narcissistic individuals, and a smaller body of research into narcissistic organizations, there is little research on the prevalence of toxic narcissism in clergy and little to none on narcissistic churches. This paper is written from the perspective of currently available research and the author’s experience in working with churches suffering from severe internal conflicts in which both the pastor and church evidenced toxic levels of narcissism. The intent is to increase awareness, open a …

Unplanned Obsolescence: Interpreting The Automatic Telephone Dialing System After The Smartphone Epoch, Walter Allison Oct 2020

Unplanned Obsolescence: Interpreting The Automatic Telephone Dialing System After The Smartphone Epoch, Walter Allison

Michigan Law Review

Technology regulations succeed or fail based upon their ability to regulate an idea. Constant innovation forces legislators to draft statutes aimed at prohibiting the idea of a device, rather than a specific device itself, because new devices with new capacities emerge every day. The Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) is a federal statute that imposes liability based on the idea of an automatic telephone dialing system (ATDS). But the statute’s definition of the device is ambiguous. The FCC struggles to coherently apply the definition to new technologies, and courts interpret the definition inconsistently. Federal circuit courts have split over these …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This research project is an academic research on apologetics, which will be taught in the in the future in local church. Many people in the Christian community may be attending the local church and living in their community that may not clearly understand apologetics. As followers of Christ, in the Christian community and the local church, can everyone defend the Faith and feel comfortable? In the Old and New Testament, God has given His road map for man. He came, lived, was buried, and resurrected for all humankind that would accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior. As Christians, …

Restoring The Historical Rule Of Lenity As A Canon, Shon Hopwood Oct 2020

Restoring The Historical Rule Of Lenity As A Canon, Shon Hopwood

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In criminal law, the venerated rule of lenity has been frequently, if not consistently, invoked as a canon of interpretation. Where criminal statutes are ambiguous, the rule of lenity generally posits that courts should interpret them narrowly, in favor of the defendant. But the rule is not always reliably used, and questions remain about its application. In this article, I will try to determine how the rule of lenity should apply and whether it should be given the status of a canon.

First, I argue that federal courts should apply the historical rule of lenity (also known as the rule …

“It’S Like They Don’T Recognize What I Bring To The Classroom”: African Immigrant Youths’ Multilingual And Multicultural Navigation In United States Schools, Lydiah Kananu Kiramba, Alex Kumi-Yeboah, Anthony Mawuli Sallar Oct 2020

“It’S Like They Don’T Recognize What I Bring To The Classroom”: African Immigrant Youths’ Multilingual And Multicultural Navigation In United States Schools, Lydiah Kananu Kiramba, Alex Kumi-Yeboah, Anthony Mawuli Sallar

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Discourses of African immigrant children are rare in educational research. As such, African immigrant educational experiences are often obscured (in part, owing to the model minority myth about Africans based on higher education degrees received by African immigrants), as well as the actual experiences and realities for African immigrant K-12 students. This qualitative study examines cross-cultural educational experiences of 30 Black African immigrant youth in U.S. schools. The findings reveal multiple participants’ struggles with cultural and linguistic differences, stereotypes and marginalization in the school environment, low expectations from teachers, and adjusting to new schooling practices. The African youths’ voices exhibited …

Skeptical Buddhism As Provenance And Project, James Mark Shields Sep 2020

Skeptical Buddhism As Provenance And Project, James Mark Shields

Faculty Contributions to Books

The past century and a half has seen various attempts in both Asia and the West to reform or re-conceptualize Buddhism by adding a simple, often provocative, qualifier. This paper examines some of the links between “secular,” “critical,” “sceptical,” and “radical” Buddhism in order to ascertain possibilities in thinking Buddhism anew as a 21st-century “project” with philosophical, ethical, and political resonance. In particular, I am motivated by the question of whether “sceptical” Buddhism can coexist with Buddhist praxis, conceived as an engaged response to the suffering of sentient beings in a globalized and neoliberal industrial capitalist world order. Let …

Annals Of The Hoồng Bàng Clan: From Ancient Legend To Modern Molecular Biology Evidence, Hoang Huu Phuoc Sep 2020

Annals Of The Hoồng Bàng Clan: From Ancient Legend To Modern Molecular Biology Evidence, Hoang Huu Phuoc

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

The biography of the Hồng Bàng Clan is considered as a legend, a semi-historical document and an important part of the Viet’s cultural heritage. According to this work, the Viet people are the descendants of Shen Nong (an ancestor of the Han Chinese), migrating from China to the Red River Delta. A large number of scholars have built a Hundred Viet/ 百越 hypothesis, also known as “migration-from-the-north hypothesis” from this document. Throughout the long history, Hồng Bàng legend has created popular misunderstandings of the Viet about their origin and misconceptions for later researchers of various subjects, such as literature, linguistics, …

Receptive Vocabulary Size As A Predictor Of Undergraduates’ Overall Cumulative Grade Point Average With English As Medium Of Instruction In Universities, Arifur Rahman Sep 2020

Receptive Vocabulary Size As A Predictor Of Undergraduates’ Overall Cumulative Grade Point Average With English As Medium Of Instruction In Universities, Arifur Rahman

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

Vocabulary size (VS) and English language proficiency (ELP) are acknowledged as important factors in students’ overall cumulative grade point average (CGPA) in tertiary education. This study attempts to investigate the associations among vocabulary size, ELP, and CGPA. It also determines whether vocabulary size or ELP can better predict tertiary students’ CGPA. The study sample is comprised of 96 undergraduates on four programs at a Malaysian public university. The students’ vocabulary size was measured using a 20,000-word vocabulary size test, their ELP that was derived from their Malaysian University English Test scores, and their CGPA that was obtained from their academic …

Encouraging Entrepreneurship And Innovation Through Regulatory Democratization, Seth C. Oranburg Sep 2020

Encouraging Entrepreneurship And Innovation Through Regulatory Democratization, Seth C. Oranburg

San Diego Law Review

Law and economics scholars agree that business regulations have a disproportionately negative impact on entrepreneurship and innovation. It would be a significant problem indeed if the very nature of regulation inhibits this kind of growth and creativity. This view of the problem suggests that the only way to increase innovation would be to decrease regulation.

Yet this view is too general. When examined more closely, all regulations are not created equal. Regulations can be formulated as rules or standards, and they can be simple or complex. Moreover, some rules are easily understood by computers and are thus suitable for automated …

Psychological Distress Of Filipino Deaf: Role Of Environmental Vulnerabilities, Self-Efficacy, And Perceived Functional Social Support, Marcella L. Sintos Sep 2020

Psychological Distress Of Filipino Deaf: Role Of Environmental Vulnerabilities, Self-Efficacy, And Perceived Functional Social Support, Marcella L. Sintos

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

Researches on Deaf mental health show that Deaf individuals are two to three times more vulnerable to psychological distress compared to their hearing counterparts because they have been exposed to several environmental vulnerabilities. Using the assumptions of stress-vulnerability-protective factors model of Liberman (2008), this study looked into the moderating role of protective factors (general self-efficacy and perceived functional social support) on the effect of vulnerabilities in the psychological distress of 120 self-contained Deaf college students aged 18 to 25 (M=21.83; SD=4.11). Results show that (a) there is a non-significant relationship between environmental vulnerabilities and psychological distress, and (b) general self-efficacy …

Terms Of Endearment: The Displacement Of Inday, Hazel T. Biana, Ruel M. Nalam Sep 2020

Terms Of Endearment: The Displacement Of Inday, Hazel T. Biana, Ruel M. Nalam

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

The term inday implies two possible meanings depending on where one is in the Philippines. In the Luzon group of islands, more specifically in Metro Manila, inday refers to the female help, usually of Visayan descent. On the other hand, in the Visayas and Mindanao group of islands, inday is a term used for endearment and respect for female family members, friends, and women of influence. What this paper aims to do is to provide a theoretical grounding, through oppositional gazing, of why the term inday oscillates between varied definitions in the context of placism or discrimination of people based …
