Stepping Down? Theorizing The Process Of Returning To The Faculty After Senior Academic Leadership, Lisa Jasinski

Academic Affairs

While scholars have devoted considerable attention to identifying and developing future academic leaders, scant empirical research has considered the firsthand experiences of senior leaders who returned to the faculty. This grounded theory study developed a theoretical understanding of the process of returning to the faculty after serving as a senior campus administrator. This research examined a common academic rite of passage using the analysis of interviews with 43 former college presidents, provosts, deans, and “other senior leaders” from a variety of postsecondary institutions. Academic leaders in the study characterized the process of returning to the faculty as mostly positive and …

The Phenomenology Of Oneiric And Visionary Experiences From A Native American Sample, Jeavoni Alejandre Oct 2020

The Phenomenology Of Oneiric And Visionary Experiences From A Native American Sample, Jeavoni Alejandre

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

C.G. Jung emphasized the importance of dreams, developed a method for dream analysis, and created the categorization of “big” and “small” dreams. “Big” dreams, a classification only clear to the dreamer, include spiritual and pivotal dreams, experiences that often influence the direction of the dreamer’s life. While C.G. Jung, Freud, and others may have bridged the modern gap, Native American (NA) cultures have long placed important emphasis and value on dreams and visions. NA traditions and ceremonies concerning dream interpretation vary distinctly from Jung’s ideas but similarly regard dreams as meaningful and worthy of effortful interpretation. “Big” dreams and visions …

Best Practices For English Learners In Distance Learning, Kylie Pieczonka

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

As the COVID-19 pandemic led to school closures across the United States,, education continued at a distance, often through an online platform. The motivation driving this project was concern regarding the disproportionate ways in which the COVID-19 pandemic affected English learners and their families. English learners often belong to populations more likely to live in poverty and the CDC discusses how these groups have challenges accessing quality healthcare ( COVID-19 in Racial and Ethnic Minority Groups , 2020) . In addition, UNESCO reports that school closures negatively affected the experiences of students worldwide (2020). As English learner students make up …

Shifting Literacy Methods And Teaching Practices To Improve Equity In Schools For Black Girls, Danae Ross

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Throughout the United States’ history, Black girls and women have found themselves as one of America’s most oppressed groups due to the systemic discrimination of both their race and gender. This problem still persists today and has made schools a place for oppression against Black girls from the time they enter the school system in kindergarten, creating low self-esteem, a feeling of alienation, and a disdain for the school system. The Other China Model: Daoism, Pluralism, And Political Liberalism, Devin K. Joshi Oct 2020

The Other China Model: Daoism, Pluralism, And Political Liberalism, Devin K. Joshi

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

While scholars often portray Chinese political thought and tradition as standing in opposition to Western notions of political liberalism, little consideration has been given to compatibility between liberalism and Daoism, a prominent religion and long-standing alternative school of thought among Chinese peoples. Addressing this gap in the literature, this study in comparative political thought compares Laozi’s Dao De Jing with John Stuart Mill’s On Liberty to illustrate certain core political ideas in the Dao De Jing and their treatment in Mill’s landmark text on political liberalism. Although the two texts diverge in terms of advocacy of popular representation, public contestation, …

Alternative Financial Models For Churches And Church Plants: When Tithes And Offerings Are Not Enough, W. Jay Moon

Great Commission Research Journal

Many churches face financial strains, forcing some to close every year. Similarly, potential church plants may be delayed or disbanded due to a lack of finances. Instead of relying solely on tithes and offerings, this article provides six nontraditional financial approaches that churches can implement to promote financial viability and missional impact. The interaction of the church’s financial liquidity (low or high) and relational networks (closed or open) provides a starting point to determine which approach may be best in the church’s context. Practical applications are provided through examples of contemporary churches using these approaches.

Victims And Prosecutors: Clientelism, Legalism, And Culture At The International Criminal Court, Stephen Cody

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

Prosecutors at the International Criminal Court (ICC) have a dual mission: hold perpetrators accountable for grave international crimes, and deliver justice to victims. To fulfill these mandates, the Office of the Prosecutor must navigate dynamic understandings of justice in disparate post conflict societies. Yet, few empirical studies have investigated how culture--viewed as a resource for navigating social relations--impacts relationships between ICC prosecutors and victims and shapes participants' expectations of international criminal law. Do prosecutors and victims embedded in distinct relational networks experience international justice differently?

This dissertation seeks to explore the ways in which such complex identities are created through the use of language. Specifically, this project will investigate how a Gay Black man (GBM) constructs his complex identity over the course of several interviews/conversations in which topic and interlocutor …

God Does Not Show Favoritism: The Intentional Inclusion Of Minorities In Pentecostal Leadership, Terrell Robert Raburn Oct 2020

God Does Not Show Favoritism: The Intentional Inclusion Of Minorities In Pentecostal Leadership, Terrell Robert Raburn

Doctor of Ministry (DMin)

Although the Azusa Street Revival, known for launching the modern Pentecostal Movement, was initially characterized by minority diversity in regard to leadership, it quickly splintered into three classic Pentecostal fellowships formed along racial lines. The research presented herein examines the racially segregated history of the Pentecostal Church in North America—acknowledging the need for the implementation of a biblically based theology of racial integration—and presents a four-step process in which minority leadership within individual Pentecostal churches is promoted, combatting the unbiblical ideology of a segregated body of Christ. The four steps include (1) the necessity for a strong visionary leader; (2) …

Réforme, Religion, Et Républicanism? The “Three Rs” Of Education In Nineteenth-Century France, Emma Novak , '22

Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards

The French Third Republic under Minister of Education Jules Ferry used public education to breach the sociopolitical divide between urban and rural France at the tail end of the nineteenth century. Ferry’s calls for secularization, centralization, and “republicanization” were countered by the Catholic Church, local governments, and rural families.
