The Feasibility Of Creating And Sustaining Charter Schools In The Rural United States, Mcallister Hall May 2020

The Feasibility Of Creating And Sustaining Charter Schools In The Rural United States, Mcallister Hall

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Many parents in rural areas desire to make a choice for their child to have an education different from what the local TPS can provide, but the choice is not available (McCarthy, 2016, Bagley, Woods, & Glatter, 2001). Communities play a large role in the success of both TPSs and charter schools, especially in rural areas (Johnson & Howley, 2015, Stuit & Doan, 2012). In many cases, community characteristics impact student performance as much as the school characteristics (Bodine et al., 2008, Reeves, 2012). The research presented in this study acts as a feasibility study of the potential for rural …

The Effects Of Firm Age And Firm Size On Strategic Agility And Performance, Jonathan Henry Reed May 2020

The Effects Of Firm Age And Firm Size On Strategic Agility And Performance, Jonathan Henry Reed

Theses and Dissertations

Strategic agility is a relatively new construct in the field of strategic management which describes the degree to which a firm is flexible with its business strategy. Strategically agile firms are able to change their market focus, product mix, key resources, or business models quickly in order to exploit opportunities. This study advances our understanding of strategic agility by empirically testing the Doz and Kosonen (2010) model of the construct in a cross-section of firms in multiple industries with several contingency factors including firm age, firm size, and environmental turbulence. Using CEO-level survey data, the model is validated, and nine …

The Experiences And Well-Being Of Mexican Immigrant Women Living In Traditionally Non-Latinx Communities In Western North Carolina, Melinda Bogardus May 2020

The Experiences And Well-Being Of Mexican Immigrant Women Living In Traditionally Non-Latinx Communities In Western North Carolina, Melinda Bogardus

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

North Carolina has, in recent decades, experienced significant growth in its Latinx, and more particularly Mexican immigrant population. As a traditionally non-Latinx state, or a state without a long-standing, large Latinx population, many communities and healthcare and service providers within North Carolina still lack knowledge, resources, and skills needed to serve and support Latinx immigrant populations well. Guided by interpretive description, this qualitative study on Mexican immigrant women in Western North Carolina sought to gain knowledge and understanding of what it is like for them to live in a traditionally non-Latinx region and how immigration has affected their well-being. Asking …

Access To Justice And Dispute Resolution Across Cultures, Sukhsimranjit Singh May 2020

Access To Justice And Dispute Resolution Across Cultures, Sukhsimranjit Singh

Fordham Law Review

There is a saying in the United States: the justice one receives is the justice one can afford. All too often, this saying proves true for both lower- and middle-class individuals. For the greatly impoverished, the access to justice crisis is twofold: part of the problem is knowing when to seek legal help and another is ensuring adequate delivery of legal assistance on request. Middle- class individuals face a different challenge, as they surpass the income threshold for free civil public legal aid but cannot afford the rising costs of conventional litigation. The problem persists across different cultures. This Article …

How Mediation Contributes To The “Justice Gap” And Possible Technological Fixes, Ellen Waldman May 2020

How Mediation Contributes To The “Justice Gap” And Possible Technological Fixes, Ellen Waldman

Fordham Law Review

This Essay’s basic premise is that mediation, as it currently is presented to pro se parties in the lower courts, risks significant depredations of justice. This risk flows directly from the ethics rules that either discourage or outright forbid mediators from providing disputants with exactly the information they need to make informed judgments as they bargain over housing, time with children, and scarce financial resources.

Rural-Urban Variations In Meals On Wheels Programs, Lea C. Florence May 2020

Rural-Urban Variations In Meals On Wheels Programs, Lea C. Florence

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Older adults are living longer than ever before. By 2060, the U.S. population aged 65 or older is projected to reach 98 million. As adults age, the prevalence of chronic diseases and disabilities increases. The need for Meals on Wheels (MOW) services is growing alongside the aging population. Yet, little is known about the geographic variation of services. Little is documented about the organizational capacity of MOW organizations in terms of geography. The current policies supporting home-and community-based services, including MOW, may be insufficient to support all older adults in all types of communities. An analysis of the More Than …

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This brief analyzes resource needs among veteran and the active-duty service member populations in key areas such as employment, education, childcare, mental and physical health, along with caregiving resources. Knowing which resources are needed is just half the battle as findings also indicate that navigating some of those services is also a challenge. This report aims to offer insight and recommendations, to the military community, along with multiple stakeholders including policymakers, practitioners, grant makers, and researchers.

Medical-Legal Partnerships: Assessment Of Mental Health & Substance Abuse Patients And Social/Legal Needs, Fung J. Liu

Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health

A medical-legal partnership (MLP) is a model which brings together health and legal services in the form of a multidisciplinary team that works to address medical and legal issues. Currently, Legal Aid of Nebraska is partnering with Bluestem Health, a local federally qualified health center (FQHC) located in Lincoln, Nebraska, to identify legal issues and provide civil legal aid services through a screening and referral process. The purpose of this capstone project was to assess the characteristics and determine the types of social/legal needs of FQHC patients referred to Legal Aid of Nebraska. What Are The Patterns Of Shared Viewpoints, Attitudes, Beliefs, And Opinions Of Full-Time Grandparent Caregivers About Their Experiences? A Q Methodological Study, Korrin Denee Kim May 2020

What Are The Patterns Of Shared Viewpoints, Attitudes, Beliefs, And Opinions Of Full-Time Grandparent Caregivers About Their Experiences? A Q Methodological Study, Korrin Denee Kim

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Objective: Millions of grandparents in the United States provide full-time care to grandchildren. Although their actions are largely altruistic, they do not come without sacrifice. Often these sacrifices are associated with major consequences. Little is known about how grandparents prioritize their sacrifices. An improved understanding of how grandparents prioritize their sacrifices could facilitate better awareness, more specialized care, and improved policies for this population. Method: I used Q methodology to investigate grandparents’ perspectives on the sacrifices that they make to raise their grandchildren. Thirteen participants were recruited using snowball and purposive sampling. To create the Q-set, I used 26 statements …

Examining The Case For Socialized Law, Myriam E. Gilles, Gary Friedman May 2020

Examining The Case For Socialized Law, Myriam E. Gilles, Gary Friedman

Articles

Most people would agree with Frederick Wilmot-Smith that the rich have no greater claim to justice than the poor. And yet, as Wilmot-Smith points out in his provocative book, Equal Justice: Fair Legal Systems in an Unfair World, our laissez-faire legal-services markets ensure sharply unequal justice for rich and poor. The prescription at the heart of Equal Justice is the deprivatization of markets for legal services. To realize the ideal of equal justice, Wilmot-Smith would equalize the legal talent available to all and replace the market system with a centralized regime loosely analogous to socialized medicine.

Wilmot-Smith’s bold ideas …

The purpose of this applied study was to solve the problem of limited educational opportunities and financial help for military spouses stationed overseas and design measures to address the issue. This multimethod study used a qualitative approach to understand better the problems spouses encounter in overseas posts while taking into consideration their personal experiences. A group of six spouses was interviewed individually to understand their needs, goals, and opinions. Also, data from two quantitative methods were collected and analyzed. A survey that addresses the importance of post-secondary education was available to one group of 30 spouses. Archival data were used …

Comment On Griffith's Deal Insurance: The Continuing Scramble Among Professionals, Abraham J.B. Cable Apr 2020

Comment On Griffith's Deal Insurance: The Continuing Scramble Among Professionals, Abraham J.B. Cable

Minnesota Law Review Headnotes, Vols. 94-106 (2009-2022)

In his recent article, Professor Sean Griffith observes a substantial development in the M&A market. Increasingly, buyers and sellers replace traditional deal terms with an insurance product representation and warranty insurance (“RWI”). This essay considers how this new product and the insurance professionals who sell and underwrite it affect the traditional role of M&A lawyers. It concludes that RWI, in its present form, does not substantially encroach on the traditional role of M&A lawyers. But it also notes that representations and warranties are ripe for technological innovation and that insurance professionals may be better positioned then lawyers to seize the …

Extraterritorial Rights In Border Enforcement, Fatma E. Marouf Apr 2020

Extraterritorial Rights In Border Enforcement, Fatma E. Marouf

Washington and Lee Law Review

Recent shifts in border enforcement policies raise pressing new questions about the extraterritorial reach of constitutional rights. Policies that keep asylum seekers in Mexico, expand the use of expedited removal, and encourage the cross-border use of force require courts to determine whether noncitizens who are physically outside the United States, or who are treated for legal purposes as being outside even if they have entered the country, can claim constitutional protections. This Article examines a small, but growing body of cases addressing these extraterritoriality issues in the border enforcement context, focusing on disparities in judicial analyses that have resulted in …

Inadequate Protection: Examining The Due Process Rights Of Individuals In Child Abuse And Neglect Registries, Amanda S. Sen, Stephanie K. Glaberson, Aubrey Rose Apr 2020

Inadequate Protection: Examining The Due Process Rights Of Individuals In Child Abuse And Neglect Registries, Amanda S. Sen, Stephanie K. Glaberson, Aubrey Rose

Washington and Lee Law Review

This Article seeks to advance due process protections for people included in state child abuse and neglect registries. Between states, there are differences in the types of cases included in the state registry and the process required to be placed on or removed from the registry. To obtain judicial due process review, a plaintiff must demonstrate that a protected liberty or property interest is at stake. When federal courts have evaluated the individual liberty interest(s) implicated by placement on state child abuse and neglect registries, they have so far only found such an interest when the plaintiff’s employment opportunities were …

Going The Distance: A Case Study Of One Community College's Journey Across The Digital Divide, Michael Robert Jolley Apr 2020

Going The Distance: A Case Study Of One Community College's Journey Across The Digital Divide, Michael Robert Jolley

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Rural communities throughout the nation continue to lag their urban and suburban peers in access to high-speed internet service. This digital divide affects rural populations in a myriad of ways, but access to higher educational opportunities may be most problematic. While the promise of technology to level the field for rural students continues to offer hope, the scarcity of broadband service lingers. This qualitative instrumental case study explores how one exceptional rural community college in the Great Plains developed the capacity to deliver distance education programming. The study relies upon Rogers's theory of diffusion of innovations to validate the extent …

The Cycle Of Failing Reform: How Mentally Ill Detainees Continue To Suffer Unconstitutional Wait Times In Colorado, Grace Gonzalez, Michael Campbell Apr 2020

The Cycle Of Failing Reform: How Mentally Ill Detainees Continue To Suffer Unconstitutional Wait Times In Colorado, Grace Gonzalez, Michael Campbell

DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive

This research examines the state of Colorado’s failing criminal justice system, particularly as it pertains to mentally ill detainees. For several years, mentally ill detainees in Colorado have been forced to wait for extensive amounts of time to receive court-ordered evaluations to determine mental competency before trial. The state’s continued failure to administer these evaluations in a timely manner has led to a series of complaints and lawsuits against the state. Unfortunately, these lawsuits have ultimately done little to create lasting reform. The state has managed to temporarily mitigate the problem as complaints of unconstitutional wait times arise, but it …
