The Necessity And Detriment Of Shame As Presented In John Calvin's Institutes, Tova Cohen
The Necessity And Detriment Of Shame As Presented In John Calvin's Institutes, Tova Cohen
Scripps Senior Theses
In this senior thesis, I aim to explore the presence of shame in John Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion, via the excavation of the three main components that comprise of his edifice: original sin, grace, and predestination. Through a close reading of Calvin's Institutes, its application to Aristotelian ethics, and its consistencies (or lack thereof) with the biblical story of Genesis, I found that Calvin's theology not only suffers logical structure, but implores the Christian practitioner to embrace shame as a means to spiritually elevate the self. To conclude, I utilize Stephanie Arel's Affect Theory to uncover the …

Migration And Women’S Relationships To The Land And Food In Myanmar, Allison Joseph
Migration And Women’S Relationships To The Land And Food In Myanmar, Allison Joseph
Scripps Senior Theses
Abstract
In the 21st century, Myanmar has become the largest migration source country in the Greater Mekong Sub-region. To achieve its economic and political goals, the government has conducted extensive confiscation and reallocation of communal lands, which has resulted in a growing class of landless and dispossessed citizens. Under the new laws, rural women are disproportionately impacted and more vulnerable to the processes of dispossession, often lacking the rights or resources of their male counterparts to fight for the land of their ancestors. This has resulted in the wide-scale disinheritance of Myanmar’s rural women from their land and food, as …

Tgif1-Twist1 Axis In Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma, Mohammed S. Razzaque, Azeddine Atfi
Tgif1-Twist1 Axis In Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma, Mohammed S. Razzaque, Azeddine Atfi
School of Medicine Publications
TG-interacting factor 1 (TGIF1) exerts inhibitory effects on transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) signaling by suppressing Smad signaling pathway at multiple levels. TGIF1 activity is important for normal embryogenesis and organogenesis, yet its dysregulation can culminate in tumorigenesis. For instance, increased expression of TGIF1 correlates with poor prognosis in triple-negative breast cancer patients, and enforced expression of TGIF1 facilitates Wnt-driven mammary tumorigenesis, suggesting that TGIF1 might function as an oncoprotein. Quite surprisingly, TGIF1 has recently been shown to function as a tumor suppressor in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), possibly owing to its ability to antagonize the pro-malignant transcription factor …

On The Effects Of High-K Dielectric Resurf In High-Voltage Bulk Finfets, Chia Hui Cheng, Jun Wei Lai, Kai Ting Hu, Chih Fang Huang, Feng Zhao
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
High-K dielectric reduced surface field (RESURF) effects in high-voltage bulk FinFETs through three-dimensional simulation are discussed in this paper for the first time. Compared to a planar gate LDMOSFET where the length of the drift region is the same, dielectric RESURF significantly increases the optimal implant dose for the drift region to a higher value, although BV2/Ron,sp is similar. By using a high-K dielectric in the shallow trench isolation (STI) to further enhance the dielectric RESURF, the BV is increased and the Ron,sp is reduced, yielding a significantly improved BV2/Ron,sp, together with a better ON/OFF current ratio. However, with the …

Formulated, processed, and dried Aloe polysaccharides thin film sandwiched between ITO as bottom electrode and Au as top electrode has been adopted as an artificial synapse to emulate behavior of neuromorphic computing. The synaptic plasticity or weight has been modulated with this simple metal-insulator-metal structure by applying voltage sweep and voltage pulse, with excitatory postsynaptic current being monitored. Synaptic potentiation and depression have been demonstrated by applying 6 consecutive sweeps of voltage in positive and negative polarity, respectively. By varying number (10 - 50) of voltage pulses, variable synaptic weight has been measured with paired pulse facilitation and post-tetanic potentiation …

Effect Of O2 Concentration In Ambient Mixture And Multiphase Radiation On Pollutant Formation In Ecn Spray-A, Khaled Mosharraf Mosharraf Mukut, Somesh Roy
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
The present study investigates the formation and evolution of soot and NOX in a high-pressure constant-volume combustion chamber. This work focuses on the effect of multiphase thermal radiation and O2 dilution in ambient/exhaust gases, some- times also referred to as exhaust gas recirculation(EGR), qualitatively and quantitatively. The spray-A case (n-dodecane as fuel) from Engine Combustion Network (ECN) is used as the target condition. Two different soot modeling approaches have been considered: a semi-empirical two-equation model and a detailed method of moments with interpolative closure (MOMIC) model. A multiphase photon Monte Carlo (PMC) solver with line-by-line (LBL) spectral data …

What lies at the core of heroism?
This book attempts to answer this daunting question. To understand the core of heroism – the forces underlying it – let’s first examine what heroism is at its surface. On the outside, heroism is a behavior, or set of behaviors. These actions are directed toward helping others, and they go beyond expectation and are considered by most people to be extraordinary (Franco, Blau, & Zimbardo, 2011). In addition, heroism involves taking great risks and making exceptional sacrifices (Allison, Goethals, & Kramer, 2017). We observe these extreme helping behaviors and we admire them -- …

Direct Numerical Simulations Of Acoustic Disturbances In Various Rectangular Nozzle Configurations, Nathaniel Hildebrand, Meelan M. Choudhari, Lian Duan
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
We perform Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) to study the acoustic freestream disturbances radiating from the turbulent boundary layers along the contoured nozzle walls of a hypersonic wind tunnel with a rectangular test section. To begin with, the effects of the spanwise end walls are suppressed by confining the spanwise computational domain to a finite segment of the overall nozzle cross section and by imposing periodic boundary conditions across that spanwise domain. Besides providing a building-block configuration to reveal partial effects of the enclosed acoustic environment within the wind tunnel, these computations serve as a steppingstone toward the goal of fully-3D …

Direct Numerical Simulation Of Turbulent Pressure Fluctuations Over A Cone At Mach 8, Junji Huang, Lian Duan, Katya M. Casper, Ross M. Wagnild, Neal P. Bitter
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Direct numerical simulations (DNS) were conducted to characterize the pressure fluctuations under the turbulent portion of the boundary layer over a sharp 7◦ half-angle cone at a nominal freestream Mach number of 8 and a unit Reynolds number of Reunit = 13.4 x 106/m. The axisymmetric cone geometry and the flow conditions of the DNS matched those measured in the Sandia Hypersonic Wind Tunnel at Mach 8 (Sandia HWT-8). The DNS-predicted wall pressure statistics, including the root-mean-square (r.m.s.) fluctuations and the power spectral density (PSD), were compared with those measured in the Sandia HWT-8. A good comparison between the DNS …

A Novel Data-Driven Scheme For The Ship Wake Identification On The 2-D Dynamic Sea Surface, Yanming Zhang, Lijun Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Because the ship wake spreads into an area much larger than that of the ship hull in the sea surface, it has been widely used in the ship detection. However, due to the complex sea wave motion and the high sea state, the ship wake detection is still a challenging task. In this paper, we propose a novel data-driven method based on dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) to detect, reconstruct, and locate the Kelvin wake on the two-dimensional dynamic sea surface. Through the proposed method, the sea's dynamic characteristics including the oscillation frequency and decay/growth rate of ship wakes and the …

(16b) and (18b) were typeset as (Formula Presented) which incorrectly show that the posterior covariance at time tk, denoted by Pk, is calculated about the prior mean, m−k. The correct forms of these equations are given by (Formula Presented) which show that Pk is calculated about the posterior mean, mk. All resulting analyses and simulations reported in the article were performed using the correct forms of the equations.
Impartial Sensor Tasking Via Forecasted Information Content Quantification, Matthew J. Gualdoni, Kyle J. Demars
Impartial Sensor Tasking Via Forecasted Information Content Quantification, Matthew J. Gualdoni, Kyle J. Demars
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The consistently increasing population of space debris in orbit about the Earth is becoming an increasingly unavoidable problem, necessitating a proper handling of the problem of sensor tasking to effectively and efficiently obtain observations of space objects to maintain catalogs of their positions and velocities. A variety of approaches have been explored to achieve this in an autonomous fashion, assisting with space traffic management. This work presents new statistical analysis of the Kullback–Leibler divergence justifying the use of its expected value in generating sensor schedules. This divergence's use as an objective measure is extended to simultaneously consider, in an impartial …
Information-Based Particle Flow For High Uncertainty Estimation, Kari C. Ward, Kyle J. Demars
Information-Based Particle Flow For High Uncertainty Estimation, Kari C. Ward, Kyle J. Demars
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This work presents a new formulation of the Gaussian particle flow filter derived using an information theoretic approach. The developed information flow addresses two problems with Gaussian particle flow: the lack of inherent meaning in the flow parameters and the inability to easily include modifications for a non-Bayesian update. Equivalency between Gaussian particle flow and information flow is established using a linear, Gaussian example. An orbit determination simulation with high initial uncertainty is used to demonstrate the consistent, robust performance of the information flow filter in situations where the extended Kalman filter fails.
Robustness Metric For Robust Design Optimization Under Time-And Space-Dependent Uncertainty Through Metamodeling, Xinpeng Wei, Xiaoping Du
Robustness Metric For Robust Design Optimization Under Time-And Space-Dependent Uncertainty Through Metamodeling, Xinpeng Wei, Xiaoping Du
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Product performance varies with respect to time and space in many engineering applications. This paper discusses how to measure and evaluate the robustness of a product or component when its quality characteristics (QCs) are functions of random variables, random fields, temporal variables, and spatial variables. At first, the existing time-dependent robustness metric is extended to the present time-and space-dependent problem. The robustness metric is derived using the extreme value of the quality characteristics with respect to temporal and spatial variables for the nominal-the-better type quality characteristics. Then, a metamodel-based numerical procedure is developed to evaluate the new robustness metric. The …

Thermodynamic Properties Of Hydroxylammonium Nitrate-Based Electric Solid Propellant Plasma, Matthew S. Glascock, Patrick D. Drew, Joshua L. Rovey, Kurt A. Polzin
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Electric solid propellants are advanced solid chemical rocket propellants controlled by electric current. An electric solid propellant may also be used in an electric propulsion system: specifically, an ablative pulsed plasma thruster. Previous experiments with the electric solid propellant known as high-performance electric propellant, or HIPEP, suggest its ablation processes are similar to the traditional propellant polytetrafluoroethylene (C2 F4). Better understanding of the ablation and the resulting propulsion performance of HIPEP requires a model of its vapor composition, bulk plasma quantities, and thermodynamic properties. Such a model was developed and favorably compared with previous analogous model predictions found in the …

Applications Of Polynomial Chaos-Based Cokriging To Aerodynamic Design Optimization Benchmark Problems, Jethro Nagawkar, Leifur Leifsson, Xiaosong Du
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this work, the polynomial chaos-based Cokriging (PC-Cokriging) is applied to a benchmark aerodynamic design optimization problem. The aim is to perform fast design optimization using this multifidelity metamodel. Multifidelity metamodels use information at multiple levels of fidelity to make accurate and fast predictions. Higher amount of lower fidelity data can provide important information on the trends to a limited amount of high-fidelity (HF) data. The PC-Cokriging metamodel is a multivariate version of the polynomial chaos-based Kriging (PC-Kriging) metamodel and its construction is similar to Cokriging. It combines the advantages of the interpolation-based Kriging metamodel and the regression-based polynomial chaos …

Incremental Cluster Validity Indices For Online Learning Of Hard Partitions: Extensions And Comparative Study, Leonardo Enzo Brito Da Silva, Niklas Max Melton, Donald C. Wunsch
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Validation is one of the most important aspects of clustering, particularly when the user is designing a trustworthy or explainable system. However, most clustering validation approaches require batch calculation. This is an important gap because of the value of clustering in real-time data streaming and other online learning applications. Therefore, interest has grown in providing online alternatives for validation. This paper extends the incremental cluster validity index (iCVI) family by presenting incremental versions of Calinski-Harabasz (iCH), Pakhira-Bandyopadhyay-Maulik (iPBM), WB index (iWB), Silhouette (iSIL), Negentropy Increment (iNI), Representative Cross Information Potential (irCIP), Representative Cross Entropy (irH), and Conn_Index (iConn_Index). Numerical Study Of Paramagnetic Elliptical Microparticles In Curved Channels And Uniform Magnetic Fields, Christopher Sobecki, Jie Zhang, Cheng Wang
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
We numerically investigated the dynamics of a paramagnetic elliptical particle immersed in a low Reynolds number Poiseuille flow in a curved channel and under a uniform magnetic field by direct numerical simulation. A finite element method, based on an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian approach, analyzed how the channel geometry, the strength and direction of the magnetic field, and the particle shape affected the rotation and radial migration of the particle. The net radial migration of the particle was analyzed after executing a π rotation and at the exit of the curved channel with and without a magnetic field. In the absence of …

Deep (> 5 m) sheeting fractures in the Navajo sandstone are evident at numerous sites in southern Utah and derive from tectonic stresses. Strong diurnal thermal cycles are, however, the likely triggers for shallow (< 0.3 m) sheeting fractures. Data from subsurface thermal sensors reveal that large temperature differences between sensors at 2 and 15 cm depth on clear summer afternoons are as great as those that trigger sheeting fractures in exposed California granite. Extensive polygonal patterns in the Navajo sandstone are composed of surface-perpendicular fractures and were produced by contractile stresses. Numerous studies have shown that porewater diminishes the tensile strength of sandstone. Based on our thermal records, we propose that cooling during monsoonal rainstorms triggers polygonal fracturing of temporarily weakened rock. On steep outcrops, polygonal patterns are rectilinear and orthogonal, with T-vertices. Lower-angle slopes host hexagonal patterns (defined by the dominance of Y-vertices). Intermediate patterns with rectangles and hexagons of similar scale are common. We posit that outcropping fractures are advancing downward by iterative steps, and that hexagons on sandstone surfaces (like prismatic columns of basalt) have evolved from ancestral orthogonal polygons of similar scale. In lava flows, fractures elongate intermittently as they follow a steep thermal gradient (the source of stress) as it rapidly moves through the rock mass. In our model, a steep, surficial thermal gradient descends through unfractured sandstone, but at the slow pace of granular disintegration. Through time, as the friable rock on stable slopes erodes, iterative cracking advances into new space. Hexagonal patterns form as new fractures, imperfectly guided by the older ones, propagate in new directions, and vertices drift into a configuration that minimizes the ratio of fracture length to polygon area.

In this paper, we introduce a hydro-economic modeling framework for the management of groundwater resources that are used for irrigated agricultural production. The model, MOD$$AT, can be used to study the costs of aquifer depletion and the net benefits of specific aquifer management policies. MOD$$AT is composed of three components, namely, an economic component, a hydrologic component and an agronomic component. A main goal of this paper is to introduce the hydro-economic model and describe how it can be transferable to different contexts. With this objective in mind, we describe model components step-by-step so that the process of integration can …
