The year 2020 marks the 25th anniversary of including intellectual property rights within the larger agenda of trade. While the marriage between trade and intellectual property was always uncomfortable, COVID-19 exposed the flaws, failures and the inadequacy of the trade agenda to harmonise intellectual property rights, particularly for patents in pharmaceuticals. Typically, the United States through its questionable United States Trade Representative (USTR) process exposed the vulnerabilities of the intellectual property systems of the rest of the world. COVID-19 exposed the manner in which the so-called ‘superior’ intellectual property regime of the US left the country with a weak health-care …
An Empirical Analysis Of The Leading Determinants Behind The Opioid Epidemic The 50 States, Sydney Levine
An Empirical Analysis Of The Leading Determinants Behind The Opioid Epidemic The 50 States, Sydney Levine
Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal
This paper investigates the determining factors influencing the opioid epidemic in each of the 50 states of the United States of America. The opioid epidemic is a rising concern throughout the nation and has been associated with economic conditions. The health crisis poses additional threats to the labor market and the overall economy. This study looks at the age adjusted opioid death rate per 100,000 people as the dependent variable and how unemployment rate, the labor force participation rate, ESOOS funding, the number of hospitals, Median household income, the GINI index, adults reporting poor mental health status, individuals reporting past …
Impacts Of Wealth On Hiv Testing In Malawi: Empirical Analysis, Anthony Murray
Impacts Of Wealth On Hiv Testing In Malawi: Empirical Analysis, Anthony Murray
Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal
This paper explores the relationship between wealth and HIV testing in the nation of Malawi, building off of previous work that tried to isolate the relationship between income and a given health outcome. Due to a variety of issues such as inaccurate self-reporting and difficulty in combining various sources of income accurately, this paper replaces income in an existing Malawi health-income model with wealth, measured by the number and kinds of possessions they owned and then scored using principal component analysis. The model used is a logit model with HIV testing as the dependent variable and wealth as the independent …
Racial Residential Segregation And Infant Mortality In The United States, Annmarie Jones
Racial Residential Segregation And Infant Mortality In The United States, Annmarie Jones
Student Research Symposium
People of color in the United States experience poorer health and higher mortality rates than their white counterparts and these outcomes are a result of structural racism. Structural racism refers to the ways in which societies foster racial discrimination, through mutually reinforcing inequitable systems (in housing, education, employment, earnings, benefits, credit, media, health care, criminal justice, and so on) that in turn reinforce discriminatory beliefs, values, and distribution of resources. These together affect the risk of adverse health outcomes (1). Research shows that racial disparities in prenatal, infant and neonatal mortality is a serious public health problem in the United …

In each stage, core research topics and research methods were explored. The results of this study show that out of …
Perceived Overqualification And Task Performance:Reconciling Two Opposing Pathways, Allen Lee, Berrin Erdogan, Amy Tian, Sara Willis, Jie Cao
Perceived Overqualification And Task Performance:Reconciling Two Opposing Pathways, Allen Lee, Berrin Erdogan, Amy Tian, Sara Willis, Jie Cao
Business Faculty Publications and Presentations
In this study, we predict that higher levels of relative deprivation and higher levels of task mastery constitute two pathways through which perceived overqualification (POQ) has indirect and opposing effects on task performance. Further, we predict that occupational instrumentality, the degree to which the individual regards their job as a stepping tone to future career opportunities, will serve as a moderator for both pathways. Across two studies, as well as a supplementary study, we found evidence that POQ is positively associated with followers’ perceptions of both task mastery and relative deprivation. In both studies, we also found consistent evidence for …

Supp & Mapp: Adaptable Structure-Based Representations For Mir Tasks, Claire Savard, Erin H. Bugbee, Melissa R, Mcguirl, Katherine M. Kinnaird
Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications
Accurate and flexible representations of music data are paramount to addressing MIR tasks, yet many of the existing approaches are difficult to interpret or rigid in nature. This work introduces two new song representations for structure-based retrieval methods: Surface Pattern Preservation (SuPP), a continuous song representation, and Matrix Pattern Preservation (MaPP), SuPP’s discrete counterpart. These representations come equipped with several user-defined parameters so that they are adaptable for a range of MIR tasks. Experimental results show MaPP as successful in addressing the cover song task on a set of Mazurka scores, with a mean precision of 0.965 and recall of …
Cooley’S Constitutional Limitations And Constitutional Originalism, Lawrence B. Solum
Cooley’S Constitutional Limitations And Constitutional Originalism, Lawrence B. Solum
Faculty Scholarship
Thomas Cooley’s A Treatise on The Constitutional Limitations Which Rest upon the Legislative Power of the States of the American Union was the most influential treatise of constitutional law in the second half of the nineteenth century. This Essay explores the ideas expressed in Cooley’s treatise in light of contemporary originalist constitutional theory. In many ways, Constitutional Limitations anticipated some of the key moves made by contemporary public meaning originalists, including the interpretation-construction distinction and the idea that ordinary meaning, and not technical meaning, is the baseline for constitutional interpretation.

Understanding ice sheet evolution through the geologic past can help constrain ice sheet models that predict future ice dynamics. Existing geological records of grounding line retreat in the Ross Sea, Antarctica, have been confined to ice‐free and terrestrial archives, which reflect dynamics from periods of more extensive ice cover. Therefore, our perspective of grounding line retreat since the Last Glacial Maximum remains incomplete. Sediments beneath Ross Ice Shelf and grounded ice offer complementary insight into the southernmost extent of grounding line retreat, yielding a more complete view of ice dynamics during deglaciation. Here we thermochemically separate the youngest organic carbon …

Disruptive Innovation Within The Legal Services Ecosystem, Donald G. Billings, Douglas G. Campbell
International Journal of Applied Management and Technology
Many law firms have done little to address the opportunities and threats presented by potentially disruptive technology (DT), such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore strategies that some law firm leaders use to address the potentially detrimental influences of DT on their organizations. The systems approach to management was employed as the conceptual framework. Data were collected from 6 participants at 2 international law firms with offices in California, using semi-structured interviews and organizational artifacts. Data were analyzed using inductive and deductive coding and thematic analysis, resulting in …

An Experimental Research On Cationic Reverse Flotation Of Anshan-Type Iron Ores, Zhonghang Chen, Dianbing Zhu, Shujuan Dai, Ahmed Sobhy
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The mineral processing technology of Anshan-type iron ores has been developed in a rapid speed in recent years, and the combined flowsheet at the core of anionic reverse flotation has become a mainstream in the beneficiation of Anshan-type iron ores in China. With the successful application of this combined flowsheet, some obvious problems are also emerging. Such as high requirement of pulp temperature, complex reagent system, high cost of reagent consumption and so on. In view of this, we have carried out an experimental study on the separation of Anshan type iron ore by cationic reverse flotation. A new collector …

Anime (animated films) and manga (comic books) fans are easily misunderstood and can even face prejudice. In fact, they are considered nerds or weirdoes in the eye of many people. This is an unfortunate happenstance for two simple reasons. First, it is a gross misperception of fans, which is fundamentally unfair to them. Second, with a growing fan base, this ever-expansive population presents ample opportunities for businesses. However, any biased view toward those fans may likely hinder marketers' efforts to serve them in an effective manner. We would like to show people what anime and manga fans are all about. …

Explaining Customer Loyalty To Retail Stores: A Moderated Explanation Chain Of The Process, Arturo Z. Vasquez-Parraga, Miguel Sahagun
Marketing Faculty Publications
This chapter reassesses the process of how store customers become loyal to their stores; what are the core subprocesses generating customer store loyalty, and what contributing moderators enrich the final outcome. A new empirical research is designed to identify and test a parsimonious model of core relationships and moderators. The result is an explanation chain that incorporates relational variables, trust, and commitment to the traditional transactional one, customer satisfaction, and the moderating factors of the relational variables. The findings reveal that 1) customer commitment is the major contributor of explanation to true customer loyalty, significantly more than the contributed explanation …
Understanding Terror: A Religiopolitical Analysis Of The Rise Of Isis And The Establishment Of A Caliphate, Alexandra Hansen
Understanding Terror: A Religiopolitical Analysis Of The Rise Of Isis And The Establishment Of A Caliphate, Alexandra Hansen
Scripps Senior Theses
The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has made waves in the international community, stoking global terror, influencing political discourse, costing hundreds of millions of dollars in security response and reconstruction efforts. More importantly, it has cost hundreds of thousands of lives, whether it be from direct combat or attacks, or from the massive refugee crises it sparked. One wonders, how did a small extremist group make such a massive and disastrous impact? Most research done on ISIS and terrorism studies tend to focus on the political, economic, and social factors that lead to the creation and successes of …

Hear For You: Engaging With Vocal Authority And Vulnerability Through Podcasting, Rowen Light-Wills
Scripps Senior Theses
Through applications of literary and film theory, cultural analysis, and historical context this thesis project will deconstruct the text of the physical and metaphorical gendered voice. The podcast medium allows for exploration of the physical voice in a spontaneous format, which makes it the ideal platform for hosting conversations between college-aged students that examine cultural conceptions of the voice. Focusing primarily on the feminized[1] voice as a site of cultural tension, participants can tell the story of their voices, talking about experiences that have shaped their auditory self-perception. The work of this project is to demonstrate that the medium …
Traumatized Characters In Traumatized Environments: A Look At Repression And Horror, Rebecca L. Goldman
Traumatized Characters In Traumatized Environments: A Look At Repression And Horror, Rebecca L. Goldman
Scripps Senior Theses
Using Sigmund Freud’s theory of ‘return of the repressed’ as a theoretical basis, this paper takes a case study approach using three critically acclaimed horror films. These films include Nicholas Roeg’s Don’t Look Now (1974), Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980), and Ari Aster’s Midsommar (2019). With use of each film, the interaction between the repressed trauma of the protagonists’ and the film environment is explored, utilizing the notion that repressed trauma will always manifest itself as a symptom of the unconscious mind. Supporting theories include Slavoj Zizek’s notion that dreams must be read in terms of their form, stemming from …
Patients' Expectations' Effects On Treatment Outcome In Major Depressive Disorder (Mdd) In Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (Istdp), Taylor Kahn
Scripps Senior Theses
Existing research has supported the influence of patients’ expectations on symptom reduction in both antidepressant trials and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for individuals suffering from major depressive disorder (MDD). Intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy (ISTDP) is effective in treating individuals with MDD, and its structured sessions, similar to the replicable format of CBT, offer a valid psychodynamic therapy that can be compared to past CBT research. This study will attempt to examine whether patients’ expectations will affect equal or greater symptom reduction when being treated with ISTDP than if treated with CBT. It will also examine whether patients’ expectations affect the …
A Feminist-Centered, Self-Efficacy, Psychoeducational Intervention For Low-Income Rural Abused Women, Catherine Thomas
A Feminist-Centered, Self-Efficacy, Psychoeducational Intervention For Low-Income Rural Abused Women, Catherine Thomas
Scripps Senior Theses
The effects of a feminist-centered, self-efficacy, psychoeducational intervention will be tested using low-income rural female domestic violence victims. Derived from previous literature indicating that lower self-efficacy is commonly seen in abused women, this intervention will focus on reconfiguring the abused women’s ideas on the patriarchal world through a feminist-centered approach to increase their self-efficacy. Before the intervention, well-being, assertiveness, self-efficacy, attitudes towards feminism, and likelihood of returning to their abuser will be measured. The same dependent variables will be measured after the intervention, except for the likelihood of them returning to their abusers. As a follow-up three weeks after the …

Impact Of Family Separation And Length Of Time Spent In A Detention Center On Latino Immigrants' Trauma, Myranda Alonso
Scripps Senior Theses
With the Trump administration separating families at the border, there are many questions surrounding its impact on Latinos and what effects come from being detained. This study focuses on the impact of length of time spent in a detention center and family separation at the border on Latino immigrants’ trauma. This study looks at 788 Latino adults who were recruited from local nonprofits in major cities like Los Angeles, Houston, and Phoenix and had them answer questions regarding length of time in a detention center, trauma, distress, and hopelessness. The expected results are that immigrants who were separated from their …

Retrieval-Induced Forgetting In Autism Spectrum: Combining Narrative Experience With Clinical Research To Explore Stress-Induced, Transitory Retrograde Amnesia, Elizabeth Willsmore-Finkle
Scripps Senior Theses
Currently, psychological research explores autism, a blanket term for a range of neurobiological and developmental differences, through a clinical, as opposed to an experiential, lens. Autism has only existed as formal diagnosis under that name since 1943 (Kanner); however, the advocacy of activists such as Temple Grandin, a slaughterhouse systems designer best known for documenting her life with autism in a series of autobiographic accounts, has begun to legitimize the incorporation of emic experiences of autism within clinical research. Researcher Dermot Bowler and colleagues (2011) have conducted extensive reviews of memory distinctions in autism, finding differences of varying degrees across …
Grieving The Eternal Present: The Pressures Of Being A Person (With Words), Rowen Light-Wills
Grieving The Eternal Present: The Pressures Of Being A Person (With Words), Rowen Light-Wills
Scripps Senior Theses
I started this poetry project from the jumping off point of psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott's most well known theory; that of the "good enough" mother. This appealed to me because like Freud's, Lacan's, and other psychoanalysts’ work, it centers the infant and attempts to understand the developing psyche. In combination with Melanie Klein’s theories, this thesis aims to pinpoint specific anxieties that transcend childhood and feel applicable to the rest of the relationships a person develops in their life. Did they experience nurturing and detach from their primary caregiver at a developmentally healthy time? Or did they lack some relationship between …

Visual Archives Of The Aids Epidemic: Examining The Cultivation Of Anticipatory Mourning In The Works Of Nan Goldin, Cookie Mueller, And Vittorio Scarpati, Samantha M. Muckle
Scripps Senior Theses
In examining Putti’s Puddingand The Cookie Portfolioas independent yet intertwined projects of anticipatory mourning, this thesis identifies Witnesses: Against Our Vanishing as the artistic fulfillment of Vittorio Scarpati, Cookie Mueller, and Nan Goldin’s combined efforts to proleptically manifest collective memory within the visual archive of their shared experience with AIDS. Assisted by an exploration of both the AIDS epidemic and the three artist’s linked life histories, this study also recognizes the importance of creating an art history inclusive of social and personal history whilst considering materials so inextricably linked to their creator’s biographical contexts.
The Problem Of Humanization: Affect And Investigative Mindset In U.S. Capital Mitigation, Jesse Cheng
The Problem Of Humanization: Affect And Investigative Mindset In U.S. Capital Mitigation, Jesse Cheng
Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
This article has two goals. First, I demonstrate the challenges that “humanization” poses for the defense as an ideal of sentencing mitigation in U.S. capital trials. Capital case procedure largely neutralizes the sympathetic effects of humanization with jurors. In addition, potential mitigation witnesses inhabit affective environs that undermine any inclination to help the defense through sympathetic testimony. Second, I explain how defense advocacy responds to humanization’s challenges. Practitioners adopt an investigative mindset that focuses on forging the conditions to cultivate relationships with mitigation witnesses. This intensive affective labor translates back into the realm of procedure through strategic maneuvers intended to …

The Necessity And Detriment Of Shame As Presented In John Calvin's Institutes, Tova Cohen
The Necessity And Detriment Of Shame As Presented In John Calvin's Institutes, Tova Cohen
Scripps Senior Theses
In this senior thesis, I aim to explore the presence of shame in John Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion, via the excavation of the three main components that comprise of his edifice: original sin, grace, and predestination. Through a close reading of Calvin's Institutes, its application to Aristotelian ethics, and its consistencies (or lack thereof) with the biblical story of Genesis, I found that Calvin's theology not only suffers logical structure, but implores the Christian practitioner to embrace shame as a means to spiritually elevate the self. To conclude, I utilize Stephanie Arel's Affect Theory to uncover the …

A Competitive Education: How Charter Schools Include And Exclude, Talia M. Bromberg
Scripps Senior Theses
A Competitive Education examines how the charter school movement is one of both inclusion and exclusion, while also serving as a study in rhetorical theory. Written as a senior thesis in the discipline of Writing and Rhetoric, this paper includes an introduction and reflection analyzing the text of the document from a rhetorical perspective. The article, written in a journalistic style, is presented in two ways: first, as one long article, and then as two shorter articles. The content of the articles looks at the history, politics, and real world effects of the charter school movement in California and across …
