Dialogue As Being With: An Antitoxin To Hate And Intolerance, Tony Osborne
Dialogue As Being With: An Antitoxin To Hate And Intolerance, Tony Osborne
Journal of Hate Studies
As the social and political landscape becomes more fearful, intolerant, and self-centered, the concept of dialogue offers a different path, a constructive way of approaching alien ideas and beliefs. Understanding the principles of true dialogue is the most effective way to foster inner and outer harmony, broaden one’s horizons, and check aggressive, intolerant impulses. Dialogue’s roots are ancient, related to a method of argument called dialectic. It is a special partnership based on mutual respect and humility. Dialogue isn’t easy to engender. It requires four pre-conditions: 1) non-empirically verifiable topic; 2) two-way flow; 3) fairness; and 4) willingness to risk …

Externally controllable drug delivery systems are crucial for a variety of biological applications where the dosage and timing of drug delivery need to be adjusted based on disease diagnosis and progression. Here, we have developed an externally controllable drug delivery system by combining three extensively used platforms: hydrogels, liposomes, and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). We have developed carbon nanotube–liposome complexes (CLCs) and incorporated these structures into a 3D alginate hydrogel for use as an optically controlled drug delivery system. The CLC structures were characterized by using a variety of imaging and spectroscopic techniques, and an optimal SWCNT/lipid ratio was selected. …

Emerging From The Deep: Complexity, Emergent Pedagogy And Deep Learning, Sue L. T. Mcgregor
Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)
As indicated in the title – emerging from the deep – this paper proposes that an ability to face and deal with complexity can emerge from deep learning that is facilitated by pedagogies designed to ensure this outcome, especially an emergent pedagogy that instills deep education. Educators would view the classroom as a complex adaptive system (CAS) capable of self-organizing and operating at the edge of chaos where order emerges, just not predictably. Self-directed students would experience a learning environment that is appreciative of nonequilibrium, unpredictability, shifting and emerging patterns and co-evolution. Teachers would be coaches, activators and facilitators. Students …

The purpose of this study is to highlight dangerous motorways via estimating the intensity of accidents and study its pattern across the UK motorway network. Two methods have been developed to achieve this aim. First, the motorway-specific intensity is estimated by using a homogeneous Poisson process. The heterogeneity across motorways is incorporated using two-level hierarchical models. The data structure is multilevel since each motorway consists of junctions that are joined by grouped segments. In the second method, the segment-specific intensity is estimated. The homogeneous Poisson process is used to model accident data within grouped segments but heterogeneity across grouped segments …

Max Weber's Living Legacy, Hermann Kurthen
Peer Reviewed Articles
June 14, 2020 was the hundred-year anniversary of Max Weber's death. He died in Munich at age 56 after most likely contracting the Spanish flu. He is often considered one of the founding fathers of sociology next to Marx and Durkheim, despite Weber resisting this label. Given Weber's worldwide reception, his enduring relevance for sociology and beyond is unbroken, even though he left a huge unfinished work not intended as a conventional sociological grand theory but as a historical-comparative attempt to understand how humans interact within their social environment and how they construct a social reality of their own making. …

An indispensable desideratum in collaborative spaces is to foster dynamic, barrier-free environments where professionals from different backgrounds can find common ground for collaborative projects. However, although such goals cannot be met without proficient and effective communication, research on the use of language as the most important means of information exchange in collaborative spaces is still needed. Our contribution in this chapter consists in exploring the linguistic interactions among coworkers of such spaces. We propose a multidisciplinary approach integrating insights from the organizational literature on communication and research methods in theoretical linguistics. The sociolinguistic analysis of two coworking spaces reveals essential …
Origins Of Pressure-Induced Enhancement In Thermal Conductivity Of Hybrid Inorganic–Organic Perovskites, Ashutosh Giri
Origins Of Pressure-Induced Enhancement In Thermal Conductivity Of Hybrid Inorganic–Organic Perovskites, Ashutosh Giri
Mechanical, Industrial & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications
Responses of materials to high pressures unveil important insight into their structure–property relationships that are otherwise masked under ambient conditions. Here, using atomistic simulations, it is shown that the thermal conductivity of methylammonium lead iodide can be drastically increased by more than an order of magnitude with applications of ∼60 GPa hydrostatic pressures. The insights gained from the molecular dynamics simulations suggest that although the inorganic constituents contribute significantly to heat flow at ambient pressure, the organic constituents are largely responsible for the drastic increase in thermal conductivity at higher pressures. The application of hydrostatic pressure leads to severe octahedral …

Introduction In the USA, opioid analgesic use and overdoses have increased dramatically. One rapidly expanding strategy to manage chronic pain in the context of this epidemic is medical cannabis. Cannabis has analgesic effects, but it also has potential adverse effects. Further, its impact on opioid analgesic use is not well studied. Managing pain in people living with HIV is particularly challenging, given the high prevalence of opioid analgesic and cannabis use. This study's overarching goal is to understand how medical cannabis use affects opioid analgesic use, with attention to Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol content, HIV outcomes and adverse events. Unique Characteristics Of Bias Crimes Committed By Males Or Females In The United States, Rebecca Stotzer, Meripa T. Godinet, Janet T. Davidson
Journal of Hate Studies
Despite increased research on women’s criminal offending patterns, research on women’s involvement in bias crimes is almost nonexistent. This study examines bias crime incidences that are considered crimes against persons (e.g., assault, murder, robbery, sexual assault) collected in the National Incidence-based Reporting System from 2009–2012 to determine what features characterize crimes committed by men or women. Results indicate that female bias crime suspects choose different victims than male suspects; female suspects are more likely than men to target friends and family members, more likely to target other women, and more frequently commit crimes based on race/ethnicity/national origin than religion or …

To examine the relationship between club rugby participation, collegiate experiences, and perceived gains, 25 rugby players and 25 non-athlete students completed the Student-Athlete Experiences Inventory-Revised, Student-Athlete Gains Inventory, and Perceived Stress Scale at the start and end of a semester. A RM-ANOVA and partial-η2 effect sizes determined if group and time differences were present. We selected variables associated with the post-scores for practical and liberal arts gains with the lasso method. Rugby players engaged in more diverse social interactions (partial-η2 = 0.091) and were more actively involved on campus (partial-η2 = 0.0914) than non-athlete students, but paradoxically …
Anti-Lgbtq Hate: An Analysis Of Situational Variables, Jill Kehoe
Anti-Lgbtq Hate: An Analysis Of Situational Variables, Jill Kehoe
Journal of Hate Studies
The current study aimed to augment the scant body of literature on anti-LGBTQ hate by providing an in-depth examination of anti-LGBTQ hate incident situational characteristics including offender substance use, number of offenders, crime location, and victim-offender relationship. Analysis of situational dynamic variables provided support for the notion that anti-LGBTQ hate is a distinct type of criminal incident. Significantly increased levels of offender substance use, crimes perpetrated by multiple offenders, crimes perpetrated by acquaintances, and crimes taking place in open spaces substantiates the theory that anti-LGBTQ hate is qualitatively unique, typified by different characteristics than other forms of crime. The data …

Unity Starts With U: A Case Study Of A Counter-Hate Campaign Through The Use Of Social Media Platforms, Candace Leung, Richard Frank
Journal of Hate Studies
Hate has been a growing concern with hate-groups and individuals using the Internet, or more specifically, social media platforms, to globalize hate. Since these social media platforms can connect users around the world, hate-organizations are using these connections as opportunities to recruit candidates and spread their propaganda. Without opposing views, these extreme viewpoints can establish themselves as legitimate and then be used to incite hate in individuals. Thus, these extreme viewpoints must be countered by similar messages to discourage this online hate, and one such way is to use the same platforms through grassroots movements. This paper presents a case …

Taking Profound Offence Seriously: Freedom Of Speech V. Human Dignity, Raphael Cohen-Almagor
Journal of Hate Studies
This study discusses the issue of offence to sensibilities as possible grounds for limiting freedom of expression. This issue is constantly brought to the public agenda, as for example, in the limitation imposed in Israel on the playing of Richard Wagner’s music by Israeli orchestras. The proposed thesis is as follows: The Offence to Sensibilities Argument will take precedence over free expression only in cases where profound and direct damage is inflicted upon the sensibilities of individuals or a target group, undermining their dignity, especially when the speaker’s intentions are to offend the target individual/group under circumstances in which the …

The Historical Facts About Hate Crime In America The Social Worker’S Role In Victim Recovery And Community Restoration, Mitchell A. Kaplan, Marian M. Inguanzo
Journal of Hate Studies
Attitudes and belief systems associated with social intolerance and racial bigotry have been part of American society for generations. Analysis of historical records reveals a number of examples of how these social forces have shaped society’s reaction to those they consider to be not part of the mainstream culture. A review of research documented in the literature on social psychology indicates that individuals who hold strong prejudicial beliefs about others based solely on race, religion, sexual orientation, or ancestry often express those feelings in ways that lead to the commission of criminal acts known as hate crimes. The proliferation of …

A Time Series Sustainability Assessment Of A Partial Energy Portfolio Transition, Jacob Hale, Suzanna Long
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Energy portfolios are overwhelmingly dependent on fossil fuel resources that perpetuate the consequences associated with climate change. Therefore, it is imperative to transition to more renewable alternatives to limit further harm to the environment. This study presents a univariate time series prediction model that evaluates sustainability outcomes of partial energy transitions. Future electricity generation at the state-level is predicted using exponential smoothing and autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA). The best prediction results are then used as an input for a sustainability assessment of a proposed transition by calculating carbon, water, land, and cost footprints. Missouri, USA was selected as a …
