Temples All The Way Down: Some Notes On The Mi‘Raj Of Muhammad, Daniel C. Peterson Jan 2020

Temples All The Way Down: Some Notes On The Mi‘Raj Of Muhammad, Daniel C. Peterson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In this article, Daniel C. Peterson describes the famous “night” journey that Muhammad allegedly made from Arabia to Jerusalem, and from Jerusalem through the heavens and into the presence of God. His ascension through various gates of heaven, passing by the gatekeepers, is compared with biblical and Latter-day Saint teachings. Elements of the dream strongly resemble the biblical description of the Garden of Eden with its two special trees.

Seek Ye Words Of Wisdom, Stephen D. Ricks, Donald W. Parry, Gaye Strathearn, Shon D. Hopkin

Interpreter Foundation Books

Stephen David Ricks is a professor of Hebrew and cognate learning in the Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages at Brigham Young University (BYU), where he has taught for almost four decades (1981–). It was at BYU, in a freshman Book of Mormon class, that he first met Shirley Smith. Four years later, after they had both served German- speaking missions (Stephen in Switzerland and Shirley in Southern Germany), they were married in the Provo Utah Temple in 1974. They are now the proud parents of six children—three girls and three boys, all of whom are married—and have twenty …

Two Essays On Sustaining And Enlarging The Doctrine, Daniel C. Peterson Jan 2020

Two Essays On Sustaining And Enlarging The Doctrine, Daniel C. Peterson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In a pair of recent books, Patrick Mason and Terryl and Fiona Givens seek to revitalize, reinvigorate, and deepen our understanding of basic terms and concepts of the Restoration. I welcome such efforts, convinced (even where I sometimes quibble) that the conversations they will engender among faithful and committed believers can be very healthy. Now that “the times of refreshing [have] come from the presence of the Lord” (Acts 3:18), it is imperative, both for ourselves and for a world that needs to hear the news, that we not lose sight of the radical freshness of the divine gift and …

A Critical Outlook On The Role Of Research Practices In Laboratory Towards Student Skills Development In Malaysian And Japanese Public Universities, Atiqurrahman Rosdi, Suzana Ariff Azizan, Zul Ilham, Ayako Fujieda, Asyraf Isyraqi Jamil, S.M.S Shaikh Mohd Saifuddeen, Mohd Zulkefeli

Research Publications (2016 to 2020)

Developing talented graduates to fulfil market challenges is a formidable task for higher education today. By using qualitative method, Malaysian and Japanese professors in selected public universities were interviewed in order to investigate how research practices in laboratory contribute towards student skills development. The result shows that laboratory practices such as group work, mentoring and closed monitoring in organization enhance student employability skills. It is suggested that chain mentoring system from professors to junior researchers to be practiced as a succession planning in developing potential leaders. Closed monitoring between principal investigator, senior and junior researchers is also significant to support …

The Parables In The Holy Qur'an: Their Benefits And Objectives., Dr. Ali Abdul Aziz Sayour Jan 2020

The Parables In The Holy Qur'an: Their Benefits And Objectives., Dr. Ali Abdul Aziz Sayour

Faculty Peer-Reviewed Papers | بحوث هيئة التدريس المحكمة

The Qur’an is a book of guidance in a graphic style, and the diversity of the Qur’anic method for expressing meanings is not hidden. Among these methods is the proverbial one.The Qur’an gave an area of care to the proverb, as it used this type of graphic method in more than fifty examples, and varied for us in the way it uses these proverbs between explicit, latent and compound, which leads the researcher to the necessity of standing on them to reveal the purposes of the proverb and its aims and objectives. The scholars, in the past and present, have …

Light Began Once More To Grow, Daniel C. Peterson Jan 2020

Light Began Once More To Grow, Daniel C. Peterson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Readers are surely aware that the birth of the Christ child is the reason we celebrate Christmas. Members of the Church may be less aware, though, of the notable birth of a child, millennia later, of distant secondary importance.

A Democratic Salvation, Daniel C. Peterson Jan 2020

A Democratic Salvation, Daniel C. Peterson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Over the centuries, many religious thinkers — precisely because they are religious thinkers — have put a premium on intellectual attainment as a prerequisite for salvation. This has sometimes yielded an elitism or snobbishness that is utterly foreign to the teachings of the Savior. The Gospel as taught in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints values education and knowledge, certainly. But not unduly. Intellectuals, while heartily welcome among the Saints and, when faithful, much appreciated for their potential contributions to the Church, have no claim on any special status in the Kingdom simply because of their (real or …

The Relationship Between The Name Of The Surah And Its Themes And Its Impact On Interpretation: Surah Al-Kahf As A Case Study, Dr. Ali Abdul Aziz Sayour

Faculty Peer-Reviewed Papers | بحوث هيئة التدريس المحكمة

The research deals with the question of the originality and application of the subject. The question is the mechanism of determining the axis of Sura, because it has a significant impact on the interpretation of the surah in general. And also because of their impact in determining the most likely of the implications of meanings meanings on the word Koran. The study took the Surah Al-Kahf as a procession of the applied side to show that the difference in determining the axis of the sura led to a difference between the interpreters in defining the axes and sections of the …

India In Situ: Textile History And Practice, A Team Approach, Annin Barrett, Carol Bier, Anna Jolly, Louise W. Mackie, Barbara Setsu Pickett

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Five textile specialists from various backgrounds came together to explore shared interests in Indian fabrics, histories, and architectural patterns. Guided by Rahul Jain’s extraordinary scholarship and generosity, we visited weaving workshops producing exquisite fabric and metallic yarn in our quest to understand the naqsha system for drawloom patterning. In Cholapur and Varanasi, we studied drawlooms set up to weave velvet, lampas, and samite, and a distinguished naqshaband demonstrated the making of a naqsha that provides the design for drawloom lifts. We examined rare historic textiles in New Delhi’s National Museum, Ahmedabad’s Calico Museum of Textiles, Varanasi’s Bharat Kala Bhavan Museum, …

The "Threat" Of Marriage Fraud: A Story Of Precarity, Exclusion, And Belonging, Sarah Pringle

Canadian Journal of Family Law

Migrants can obtain permanent residency in Canada under the family-reunification category set out in s. 12(1) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA). Canadian citizens or permanent residents may apply to sponsor their non-citizen spouse, common law or conjugal partner, or other relatives to move to Canada pursuant to s. 117(1)(a) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations (IRPR). The bad-faith clause under s. 4(1) of the IRPR requires spousal-sponsorship applicants to prove to visa officers that, on a balance of probabilities, their relationship is “genuine” and not “entered into primarily for the purpose of …

It Came From Beyond, Daniel C. Peterson Jan 2020

It Came From Beyond, Daniel C. Peterson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The early Latter-day Saints viewed the Book of Mormon not only as a symbol of Joseph Smith’s prophetic calling but also as the most powerful evidence for that calling. However, perhaps because they were ardent believers in the Bible who had been formed in a distinctly Bible-drenched culture and perhaps also because many of them had come to the Book of Mormon relatively late in their lives, they tended to quote from the Nephite record only rarely. Surprisingly, this was the case even for Joseph Smith himself — which can be taken as a sign that he didn’t write the …

Reckoning With The Mortally Inevitable, Daniel C. Peterson Jan 2020

Reckoning With The Mortally Inevitable, Daniel C. Peterson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Every human enterprise — even the best, including science and scholarship — is marred by human weakness, by our inescapable biases, incapacities, limitations, preconceptions, and sometimes, yes, sins. It is a legacy of the Fall. With this in mind, we should approach even the greatest scientific, cultural, and academic achievements with both grateful appreciation and humility. J. B. Phillips’s rendition of Paul’s words at 1 Corinthians 13:12 captures the thought nicely: “At present we are men looking at puzzling reflections in a mirror. The time will come when we shall see reality whole and face to face! At present all …
