If I Get Sick With Coronavirus, Can Donald Trump Make Me Stay Home?, Brian Labus
Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research
President Donald Trump recently appointed Vice President Mike Pence to lead the government’s response to the COVID-19 outbreak and control public statements by government health officials about the crisis. In the days since, health departments throughout the country have investigated potential cases, announced new cases and declared public health emergencies, all without the approval of the vice president. So who really is in charge of the outbreak response? As with most things in American government, the answer is complicated.

ABSTRACT Baiting is a fundamental strategy for the global management of wild pigs (Sus scrofa); however, little information exists on how anthropogenic bait affects wild pig movements on a landscape. We investigated factors that are important in determining the spatial area of attraction for wild pigs to bait (‘area of influence’ of a bait site) using data from Global Positioning System (GPS) collars and locations of bait sites. We monitored movements of wild pigs in 2 distinct study areas in the United States from February to September 2016 and used locational data using GPS collars to analyze the influence of …

A Review Of Qualitative Methods In Health Communication Research, Liza Ngenye, Gary Kreps
The Qualitative Report
This paper examines the ways that qualitative inquiry can be especially useful for gathering relevant descriptive data that can provide a deep understanding of health communication issues and processes, as well as to provide evidence-based guidance for addressing key challenges of health care delivery and promotion. This article promotes methodological diversity in research designs and illustrates the value of employing qualitative methods such as ethnography and grounded theory in health communication research. It is also provides calls for the application of less-used, unfamiliar qualitative methods such as phenomenology. Our careful bibliographic review of health communication research studies published over the …

Diagnostic Stewardship Interventions For Clostridioides Diffcile Infection, Luke A. Yeager, M E. Lacy
Diagnostic Stewardship Interventions For Clostridioides Diffcile Infection, Luke A. Yeager, M E. Lacy
Quality Improvement/Patient Safety Symposium
Background:Our institution’s rate of hospital acquired Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) infection (CDI) is higher than expected based on documented severity of illness of our patients. The C. diff testing algorithm at our institution utilizes a multi-step approach. It begins with two tests (antigen EIA and toxin A/B EIA). If the results of these two tests are indeterminate, the algorithm then reflexes to a third test (NAAT-PCR). Non-toxin producing C. diff colonization can result in a positive C. diff test in the absence of active infection. 1, 2 Up to 20% of hospitalized patients are asymptomatic carriers of C. diff. …

Quality Improvement/Patient Safety Symposium
Introduction:
Patients who are diagnosed with HIV but not retained in medical care have been identified as one of the highest risks for new HIV transmissions and have higher rates of all cause mortality 1,2. Factors impacting retention in care include timely clinical follow up and timely prescription of anti-retroviral therapy3. We identified specific subpopulations among those living with HIV who are vulnerable to being lost to follow up, namely: patients newly diagnosed with HIV and patients transitioning across the healthcare system, such as those newly discharged from inpatient facilities 4,5. We reviewed the processes for …

Quality Improvement/Patient Safety Symposium
Introduction:
In 2018, there were 2,943 surgical site infections (SSIs) among patients who underwent abdominal hysterectomies in the U.S. and these account for substantial morbidity and increased healthcare costs. University of New Mexico Hospitals (UNMH) has had elevated rates of abdominal hysterectomy SSIs compared with national benchmarks. One of these benchmarks includes the Standardized Infection Ratios (SIRs). UNMH’s SIR is often >1 indicating more infections than predicted. In response, a multidisciplinary team created and then implemented a bundle to prevent SSIs. Our objectives were to assess SSI bundle compliance and its impact on SSI rates and numbers.

Approaches To Overcome Flow Cytometry Limitations In The Analysis Of Cells From Veterinary Relevant Species, Julia Hunka, John T. Riley, Gudrun F. Debes
Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Flow cytometry is a powerful tool for the multiparameter analysis of leukocyte subsets on the single cell level. Recent advances have greatly increased the number of fluorochrome-labeled antibodies in flow cytometry. In particular, an increase in available fluorochromes with distinct excitation and emission spectra combined with novel multicolor flow cytometers with several lasers have enhanced the generation of multidimensional expression data for leukocytes and other cell types. However, these advances have mainly benefited the analysis of human or mouse cell samples given the lack of reagents for most animal species. The flow cytometric analysis of important veterinary, agricultural, wildlife, …

Pathology, East Africa
Introduction: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing problem globally especially in Sub-Saharan Africa including Kenya. Without any intervention, lower/middle-income countries (LMICs) will be most affected due to already higher AMR levels compared with higher income countries and due to the far higher burden of diseases in the LMICs. Studies have consistently shown that inappropriate use of antimicrobials is the major driver of AMR. To address this challenge, hospitals are now implementing antibiotic stewardship programmes (ASPs), which have been shown to achieve reduced antibiotic usage, to decrease the prevalence of resistance and lead to significant economic benefits. However, the implementation of …

Perplexing Role Of P-Glycoprotein In Tumor Microenvironment, Kianna Robinson, Venkataswarup Tiriveedhi
Biology Faculty Research
Development of multidrug resistance (MDR) still remains a major obstacle to the long-term success of cancer therapy. P-glycoprotein (P-gp) is a well-identified membrane transporter with capability to efflux drug molecules out of the cancer cell leading to reduced efficiency of chemotherapy. Cancer cells upregulate P-gp expression as an adaptive response to evade chemotherapy mediated cell death. While several P-gp inhibitors have been discovered by in silico and pre-clinical studies, very few have successfully passed all phases of the clinical trials. Studies show that application of P-gp inhibitors in cancer therapy regimen following development of MDR achieved limited beneficial outcomes. While, …

Proposals For Coping With "Psychological Typhoon Eye" Effect Detected In Covid-19, Xu Mingxing, Zheng Rui, Rao Lilin, Kuang Yi, Yang Shuwen, Ding Yang, Li Jianglong, Li Shu
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Psychological typhoon eye (PTE) effect describes the public's irrational panic and response to major emergencies. This phenomenon is reported and named by LI Shu and his colleagues after the Wenchuan earthquake. During the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, we conducted a worldwide survey to investigate the safety concerns and risk perception of the COVID-19 epidemic from participants staying in five areas of different levels of risk (high-risk, moderate and high-risk, moderate-risk, low-risk, and very lowrisk areas). This effect appears to hold for COVID-19. Specifically, participants staying abroad showed more safety concerns or fears of the COVID-19 epidemic than participants staying …

Reliable and efficient population estimates are a critical need for effective management of invasive wild pigs (Sus scrofa). We evaluated the use of 10‐day camera grids for rapid population assessment (RPA) of wild pigs at 3 study sites that varied in vegetation communities and wild pig densities. Study areas included Buck Island Ranch, Florida; Tejon Ranch, California; and the Savannah River Site, South Carolina, USA, during 2016–2018. Rapid population assessments grids were composed of baited camera traps spaced approximately 500 or 750 m apart. Two RPA grids were deployed per study site and each grid was deployed twice (4–6 months …

Investigating Bat Activity In Various Agricultural Landscapes In Northeastern United States, Katherine Harms, Emmanuel Omondi, Atanu Mukherjee
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research
Bats are estimated to provide between $3.7 and $53 billion annually in ecosystem services in the U.S.A. Determining how bats use land for foraging is important in planning agricultural landscapes to increase their presence and role in insect pest control. A research project was established in 2016 and 2017 to determine bat populations and activity differences between different land use management systems. Bat activity was monitored in 10 conventionally and organically managed systems in the presence of, and at a distance from the tree line. Two acoustic monitoring devices were used to record ultrasonic echolocation calls of bats. Organic systems …
