Identification Of Snps Associated With Multiple Antibiotic Resistance Genes In Eight Clinical Variants Of Enterococcus Faecium., Krishna S. Karia
Identification Of Snps Associated With Multiple Antibiotic Resistance Genes In Eight Clinical Variants Of Enterococcus Faecium., Krishna S. Karia
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The evolution of multi drug resistant (MDR) bacteria has been well documented these last decade, suggesting that resistance to antibiotics is most commonly associated to single nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs) mutation. To this aim, several molecular methods have been performed to elucidate SNPs in the increasing number of resistant microorganisms. Early detection of MDR bacteria has become of prime necessity in order to combat the disease and ensure public health. Therefore, this research was conducted to screen for SNP mutations correlated to drug resistance in some nosocomial MDR bacteria strains donated from Moffitt Cancer Center (MCC) hospital. Blood, stool, urine, and …
An Examination Of Certified Nurse-Midwives’ Attitudes And Beliefs Surrounding Breastsleeping: Implications For Advanced Nursing Practice And Education, Lucy Wiesemann
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Breastsleeping, defined as co-sleeping while breastfeeding, is a practice commonly employed in breastfeeding families. However, literature examining this concept, its prevalence, and related education for safe breastsleeping is scant. Providers' attitudes surrounding breastsleeping play an essential role in practice and outcomes when caring for breastfeeding patients and families. The purpose of the study was to examine and describe Certified Nurse-Midwives' attitudes and beliefs surrounding breastsleeping.
Methods: An adapted 18-item Nurse Attitudes and Beliefs Questionnaire-Revised (NABQ-R) online-survey that measured breastsleeping attitudes and beliefs of Certified Nurse-Midwives was administered via an online survey platform (Qualtrics). The quantitative analysis utilized SPSS 25 …

The cerebral cortex underlies our complex cognitive capabilities, yet little is known about the specific genetic loci that influence human cortical structure. To identify genetic variants that affect cortical structure, we conducted a genome-wide association meta-analysis of brain magnetic resonance imaging data from 51,665 individuals. We analyzed the surface area and average thickness of the whole cortex and 34 regions with known functional specializations. We identified 199 significant loci and found significant enrichment for loci influencing total surface area within regulatory elements that are active during prenatal cortical development, supporting the radial unit hypothesis. Loci that affect regional surface area …

Public health officials consistently promote hand-washing as a way for people to protect themselves from the COVID-19 coronavirus. However, this virus can live on metal and plastic for days, so simply adjusting your eyeglasses with unwashed hands may be enough to infect yourself. Thus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization have been telling people to stop touching their faces.
Targeting The Eskape Pathogens By Botanical And Microbial Approaches, Emily Dilandro
Targeting The Eskape Pathogens By Botanical And Microbial Approaches, Emily Dilandro
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There is a vital need to find new clinical treatment options to combat ESKAPE pathogen infections. Nature has thus far been the most fruitful at providing antimicrobial compounds, which have been derived from a plethora of sources. Ranging from plants to microbial communities, these organisms create chemical compounds that are used as defense mechanisms against invasive or encroaching organisms and confer the producers with competitive advantages. In this study, cinnamaldehyde was investigated as a botanical approach to finding active antimicrobial compounds that inhibit the ESKAPE pathogens. Here, we show that all the ESKAPE pathogens are inhibited by cinnamaldehyde concentrations between …

Ideology Affects Trust In Science Agencies During A Pandemic, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Thomas G. Safford
Ideology Affects Trust In Science Agencies During A Pandemic, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Thomas G. Safford
Carsey Publications
In this perspectives brief, authors Lawrence Hamilton and Thomas Safford discuss the importance of government and public respect for scientific advice in mitigating the impacts of COVID-19. Striking political divisions in attitudes toward science have recently been evident in U.S. government statements and actions regarding the pandemic, and in opinions or behavior reported by general-public surveys. Although the COVID-19 crisis is breaking news, these political divisions in respect for science during a pandemic have deeper roots. A nationwide survey conducted by Carsey School researchers in 2016, immediately after the elections, found 25-point gaps between Trump and Clinton voters, or between …

Background There is a global commitment to eliminating tuberculosis (TB). It is critical to detect and treat cases of latent TB infection (LTBI), the reservoir of new TB cases. Our study assesses trends in publication of LTBI-related research. Methods We used the keywords (“latent tuberculosis” OR “LTBI” OR “latent TB”) to search the Web of Science for LTBI-related articles published 1995–2018, then classified the results into three research areas: laboratory sciences, clinical research, and public health. We calculated the proportions of LTBI-related articles in each area to three areas combined, the average rates of LTBI-related to all scientific and TB-related …

Exploring The Experiences Of Community Health Workers In The Dominican Republic Using Photovoice, Johnathan Steppe
Doctorate of Nursing Science Dissertations
In order to mitigate the growing health worker shortage, many low-middle income countries (LMICs) use community health workers (CHWs) to extend health services to underserved communities. Community health workers are laypersons with minimal training who provide basic health services for they communities in which they live. Although past research has demonstrated that CHWs can provide appropriate care that contributes to positive health outcomes, many CHW programs fail to achieve long-term sustainability. As the largest group of health professionals, nurses often work closely with CHWs, and are therefore well-positioned to support sustainability of CHW programs.
The purpose of this participatory action …

Integer Versus Fractional Order Seir Deterministic And Stochastic Models Of Measles, Md Rafiul Islam, Angela Peace, Daniel Medina, Tamer Oraby
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
In this paper, we compare the performance between systems of ordinary and (Caputo) fractional differential equations depicting the susceptible-exposed-infectious-recovered (SEIR) models of diseases. In order to understand the origins of both approaches as mean-field approximations of integer and fractional stochastic processes, we introduce the fractional differential equations (FDEs) as approximations of some type of fractional nonlinear birth and death processes. Then, we examine validity of the two approaches against empirical courses of epidemics; we fit both of them to case counts of three measles epidemics that occurred during the pre-vaccination era in three different locations. While ordinary differential equations (ODEs) …

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
The focus of this research is to better understand how this parasite works. The protozoan Giardia spp is found all over the world and in many species such as dogs, cats, and humans. From its two different forms to the microscopic size of both forms to its ability to destroy intestinal villi and cause symptoms like other parasitic infections, Giardia spp is continuously misdiagnosed. Upon further observation at veterinary clinics and researching science articles, Giardia spp is most commonly found in pets but has the potential to spread to humans via contaminated water. The most commonly infected humans are hikers, …

Very high IgM levels represent the hallmark of hyper IgM (HIGM) syndromes, a group of primary immunodeficiencies (PIDs) characterized by susceptibility to infections and malignancies. Other PIDs not fulfilling the diagnostic criteria for HIGM syndromes can also be characterized by high IgM levels and susceptibility to malignancies. The aim of this study is to characterize clinical phenotype, immune impairment, and pathogenic mechanism in six patients with very high IgM levels in whom classical HIGM syndromes were ruled out. The immunological analysis included extended B-cell immunophenotyping, evaluation of class switch recombination and somatic hypermutation, and next generation sequencing (NGS). Recurrent or …

Increasing Pneumococcal Vaccinations For Patients With Lung Cancer, Katie L. Kulesa-Fanslau
DNP and Student Works
Pneumococcal vaccinations are recommended for patients with lung cancer either before or during treatment to prevent pneumonia. During oncology care, infectious complications contribute to treatment interruptions, poor outcomes, and increased hospitalizations and healthcare expenditures. Pneumococcal vaccination rates remain well below the benchmarks set by Healthy People 2020 despite support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN). A quality improvement (QI) project was implemented within a thoracic medical oncology practice utilizing the 4PillarsTM Practice Transformation Program to increase both the frequency of immunization assessment and the pneumococcal vaccination rate. Intervention implementation and …

Network-Based Drug Repurposing For Novel Coronavirus 2019-Ncov/Sars-Cov-2, Yuan Hou, Feixiong Cheng
Faculty Scholarship
Human coronaviruses (HCoVs), including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV, also known as SARS-CoV-2), lead global epidemics with high morbidity and mortality. However, there are currently no effective drugs targeting 2019-nCoV/SARS-CoV-2. Drug repurposing, representing as an effective drug discovery strategy from existing drugs, could shorten the time and reduce the cost compared to de novo drug discovery. In this study, we present an integrative, antiviral drug repurposing methodology implementing a systems pharmacology-based network medicine platform, quantifying the interplay between the HCoV-host interactome and drug targets in the human protein-protein interaction network. Phylogenetic analyses of 15 …

Transregional Southeast Asia: Perspectives From An Outlier, Caroline S.; Hau
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
The Philippines is commonly understood to occupy an anomalous position in Southeast Asian area studies. This essay explores the logic, politics, and logistics of the inclusion and exclusion of the Philippines in or from Southeast Asian studies. Perspectives on and from the Philippines can help rethink and refine concepts of “region” by emphasizing, rather than glossing over, the transregional connections and histories that link the Philippines and its localities to its neighbors, to various regions, and to the world. Area studies need not be hobbled by an intellectual parochialism that cordons off analysis at any given local, national, regional, and …

Toward Culturally Relevant Emotion Detection Using Physiological Signals, Khadija Zanna
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Research shows that emotional distress has a statistically significant impact on a student’s grade point average and intent to drop out of college. Because students of different races have varying college experiences, it is important to understand the emotional experiences of different racial groups to better support students’ needs and academic success. In this work, we explore several physiological responses to ten different emotional stimuli captured from 140 students. We employ unsupervised learning via the Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (DBSCAN) algorithm and supervised learning via Random Forests and Support Vector machines to analyze clustering partitions and classification …
