In Singapore, Laws Are Necessary For Trickle-Down Policies To Work, Tan K. B. Eugene Apr 2020

In Singapore, Laws Are Necessary For Trickle-Down Policies To Work, Tan K. B. Eugene

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

In a commentary, SMU Associate Professor of Law Eugene Tan discussed the necessity for laws in order for trickle-down policies to work. He explained that while the three-in-one Unity, Resilience, and Solidarity Budgets demonstrate the resolve of Singapore to ensure businesses and households are helped amid the public health concerns and the economic fallout of the COVID-19 global pandemic, self-seeking behaviour can undermine well-intended measures as trickle down outcomes end up not materialising. However, he noted that laws have their limitations too, and concluded that an internally driven mode of compliance could be far more effective.

Impact Of The Covid-19 Outbreak On Long-Term Care In The United States, Courtney H. Van Houtven, Nathan A. Boucher, Walter D. Dawson

Institute on Aging Publications

The United States (US) currently has the most confirmed cases of COVID-19 of any country. Yet, adequate testing for the virus remains a major issue. Approximately 51.6 million Americans are over the age of 65 and 56 percent of adults over 65 are living with two or more chronic conditions (23 percent have 3 or more). Given the higher risk of death and complications associated with advanced age and underlying health conditions, COVID-19 has had an immense impact upon LTC in the United States. Yet, the level and intensity of impact has been sporadic in application. This is due in …

Inappropriate Antibiotic Use: A Survey Of Provider Prescribing Behaviors, Brice I. Saunders Mar 2020

Inappropriate Antibiotic Use: A Survey Of Provider Prescribing Behaviors, Brice I. Saunders

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project

Antibiotics save lives and are one of the most widely used medications of modern medicine. However, the widespread use of antibiotics has led to the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). AMR is a major public health crisis with disastrous consequences on national and global healthcare systems. AMR is associated with increased healthcare costs, increased morbidity and mortality, longer hospital stays, increased readmission rates, and overall poorer patient outcomes. The use of antibiotics is the single most important leading factor involved in the development of resistance. Current estimates suggest that at least 30% and up to 50% of all antibiotics prescribed …

Debilitating Southeastern Community College V. Davis: Achieving The Promise Of Disability Civil Rights, Leslie Francis

University of the District of Columbia Law Review

Disability civil rights law today continues to be shaped by troubling precedent created in initial decisions of the Supreme Court under the Rehabilitation Act. This article explores the first of these decisions, Southeastern Community College v. Davis, demonstrates Davis’ continuing impact, and analyzes how this impact may be addressed. Davis was a suit brought by a hearing-impaired student who had been refused accommodations and denied admission to the College’s nursing program. Critical litigation decisions on behalf of Davis at the trial court did not contest the College’s failure to provide accommodations that are common today, such as sign interpretation, or …

What Can The Protection And Advocacy Network Offer To Our Veterans?, David A. Boyer Mar 2020

What Can The Protection And Advocacy Network Offer To Our Veterans?, David A. Boyer

University of the District of Columbia Law Review

The desire to compensate veterans predates the establishment of the United States (“U.S.”). In 1636, individuals with disabilities received pensions for defending the Plymouth colony against Native Americans.1 Throughout history, this practice continued, as documented by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (“VA”).2 By 1930, President Herbert Hoover signed the Executive Order 5398, which created the Veterans Administration.3 Prior to President Hoover’s signing of that executive order, the available veteran services were divided by three separate governmental agencies: the Veterans’ Bureau, the Pensions Bureau, and the Soldiers’ Home.4 Consequently, that executive order combined all three agencies into one that concentrated …

BACKGROUND: Refugees and other select visa holders are recommended to receive a domestic medical examination within 90 days after arrival to the United States. Limited data have been published on the coverage of screenings offered during this examination across multiple resettlement states, preventing evaluation of this voluntary program's potential impact on postarrival refugee health. This analysis sought to calculate and compare screening proportions among refugees and other eligible populations to assess the domestic medical examination's impact on screening coverage resulting from this examination.

METHODS AND FINDINGS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis to summarize and compare domestic medical examination data from …

Members of social groups risk infection through contact with those in their social network. Evidence that social organization may protect populations from pathogens in certain circumstances prompts the question as to how social organization affects the spread of ectoparasites. The same grooming behaviors that establish social bonds also play a role in the progression of ectoparasitic outbreaks. In this paper, we model the interactions between social organization and allogrooming efficiency to consider how ectoparasitic threats may have shaped the evolution of social behaviors. To better understand the impacts of social grooming on organizational structure, we consider several dynamic models of …

Epidemiological Significance Of Parasitic Infections In Olive Baboons (Papio Anubis) At Gombe National Park, Tanzania, Jared S. Bakuza

Tanzania Journal of Science

Several parasites of significant health importance have been observed in baboons at Gombe National Park in western Tanzania.  However, little is known on impacts these infections have on baboon health. Baboon stools were examined for parasites using formol-ethyl technique and their health and troop membership associated with parasitic infections. Observed nematode parasites were; Streptopharagus sp., Physaloptera sp., unidentified nematodes, hookworms and Trichuris sp. Trematode parasites included Schistosoma mansoni and unidentified trematode, with the latter’s intensity being highest in DB troop baboons. Parasite egg counts (epg) for nematodes ranged from 9 to 12, and that of trematodes from 4 to 40 …

Self-Efficacy And Feeling Of Security Associated With Risky Sexual Behavior Among Commercial Sex Workers Living With Hiv, Anki Tias Yolanda, Agung Waluyo, Lestari Sukmarini

Jurnal Keperawatan Indonesia

Commercial sex workers (CSWs) represent a key population for HIV transmission. CSWs continue to thrive because of the development of the tourism sector and the acceptance of communities. This study aimed to identify the factors associated with risky sexual behavior among CSWs living with HIV. A cross-sectional design was adopted. The sample size was set to 80 CSWs living with HIV in the Special Region of Yogyakarta and Central Java. Chi-square and multiple logistic regression were used in the data analysis. Results showed the significant relationship of self-efficacy (p < 0.001; OR = 9.365) and feeling secure (p= 0.033; OR= 2.762) with risky sexual behavior. No significant relationship was noted between income (p= 0.244), knowledge (p= 0.110), attitude (p= 0.978), drug use (p= 0.150), alcohol consumption (p= 0.642), and sexual violence (p= 0.968) and risky sexual behavior. Nursing practices are expected to focus on promotive and preventative efforts by involving communities in enhancing the feeling of security and self-efficacy of CSWs through health programs and improvement of health facilities.

Approximately 90 days of the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) spreading originally from Wuhan, China, and across the globe has led to a widespread chain of events with imminent threats to the fragile relationship between community health and economic health. Despite near hourly reporting on this crisis, there has been no regular, updated, or accurate reporting of hospitalizations for COVID-19. It is known that many test-positive individuals may not develop symptoms or have a mild self-limited viral syndrome consisting of fever, malaise, dry cough, and constitutional symptoms. However some individuals develop a more fulminant syndrome including viral pneumonia, respiratory failure requiring oxygen, acute …

Investigating Mechanisms Of Immune Suppression Secondary To An Inflammatory Microenvironment, Wendy Michelle Kandell Mar 2020

Investigating Mechanisms Of Immune Suppression Secondary To An Inflammatory Microenvironment, Wendy Michelle Kandell

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The immune system plays a dynamic role in cancer progression. The theory of immunoediting suggests that the relationship between the tumor cell and the immune cell is one that is in flux: initially highly active and responsive to tumor antigen to one that has escaped immune responsiveness. Once the tumor has formed and effectively “escaped”, there are multiple mechanisms that work against a conventional immune response. The tumor cell clones that have escaped the elimination phase are those that are less immunogenic. These clones downregulate MHC, have increased apoptosis through DAMP-driven mechanisms, and suppressive cell phenotypes are driven through cytokine-driven …
