Fundamental Differences In The B Cell Locus, V(D)J Repertoire, And Marburg Virus Epitope Recognition Of The Egyptian Rousette Bat That May Allow For Asymptomatic Presentation, Maggie Linn Bartlett
Theses & Dissertations
Marburg virus (MARV) causes a hemorrhagic fever in humans but is asymptomatic in a known reservoir, the Egyptian rousette bat (Rousettus aegyptiacus, ERB). Understanding the mechanisms that drive these different outcomes could potentially advance the development of therapeutics. The immunoglobulin (Ig) response to MARV infection in ERBs in known to serve a roll in protection. The Ig germline encodes Variable (VH), Diversity (DH), and Joining (JH) genes that then recombine (V(D)J) to make up the binding site of an Ig. Understanding the gene composition of the Ig germline is critical to defining the potential B cell repertoire. We …
Planning And Facilitating The Training Of Emergency Medical Services On The Safe Transport Of Patients With Highly Infectious Diseases, Mohammed Alhallaf
Planning And Facilitating The Training Of Emergency Medical Services On The Safe Transport Of Patients With Highly Infectious Diseases, Mohammed Alhallaf
Theses & Dissertations
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel are the first line of treatment and are the first exposed health care workers to infectious diseases (IDs). Consequently, the EMS setting is a relatively vulnerable environment for disease transmission and cross-contamination. Also, serious and emerging IDs, such as highly pathogenic viral hemorrhagic fevers and novel Coronaviruses, in a time of increased globalization, require comprehensive EMS training and preparedness. This project had the objective of identifying best practices for the EMS transport of patients with IDs. The methods for this project were done in two phases. In the first stage, we …

Identifying Determinants Of Target Specificity In Two Related Bacterial Peptide Toxins, Andrew D. Holmes
Identifying Determinants Of Target Specificity In Two Related Bacterial Peptide Toxins, Andrew D. Holmes
Honors Thesis
Toxin-antitoxin (TA) systems were originally identified as two-component systems ensuring the stable inheritance of plasmids in bacterial populations. Recently, they have been identified on bacterial chromosomes where their functions remain mostly undefined. The par locus of E. faecalis plasmid pAD1 (parpAD1) was the first TA system defined in a Gram-positive bacterium and a homolog encoded on the E. faecalis chromosome (parEF0409) was later described. Related loci numbering in the hundreds have been identified throughout Gram-positive bacteria based on homology to the toxin of the system, Fst, and similarities in genetic organization and regulation. Despite …
Arginine Biosynthesis In Staphylococcus Aureus, Itidal Reslane
Arginine Biosynthesis In Staphylococcus Aureus, Itidal Reslane
Theses & Dissertations
Staphylococcus aureus causes a wide variety of infections including osteomyelitis, endocarditis, and necrotizing pneumonia. It has been known for decades that S. aureus is auxotrophic for many amino acids including arginine. However, we discovered that after extended incubation, S. aureus can be trained to grow in a defined media lacking arginine. We demonstrate here that this delayed growth is due to the selection of mutations in ahrC, a transcriptional regulator of arginine biosynthesis. A mutation in ahrC mediates the growth of S. aureus in CDM-R by facilitating the biosynthesis of arginine via proline. Mutations in putA and argGH halt the …
Flavonoid And Cannabidiol Neural Glyoxalase Pathway Enhancement Against Aging And Alzheimer’S Disease, Joel R. Frandsen
Flavonoid And Cannabidiol Neural Glyoxalase Pathway Enhancement Against Aging And Alzheimer’S Disease, Joel R. Frandsen
Theses & Dissertations
Alzheimer’s Disease is a neurodegenerative condition featuring neural cell death and a decline in cognitive capacity caused by elevated inflammation and production of reactive oxygen species. The glyoxalase pathway is an endogenous antioxidant system that neutralizes reactive methylglyoxal through sequential reactions. Dysfunction of the glyoxalase pathway contributes to oxidative stress and the accumulation of inflammatory metabolic byproducts. Plant-produced compounds with antioxidant activity can enhance endogenous antioxidant pathways and protect cells from elevated ROS production. We hypothesize that flavonoids and limited Cannabis Sativa-produced cannabidiol can enhance glyoxalase pathway function through regulation of antioxidant and pro-apoptotic signaling pathways to prevent methylglyoxal-mediated …

Examination Of Sleep Disturbance, Anxiety Sensitivity, And Depression In An Undergraduate Sample, Dasha Grace
Honors Theses
Sleep contributes to overall well-being, mental health, and daily functioning. Sleep disturbances negatively affect psychological, physiological, and biological processing, and the quality of sleep is similarly affected by these processes. The effects of sleep disturbance call for a greater understanding of depression and anxiety sensitivity among college students. Studies have found that sleep disturbance affects nearly 90% of the college student population. The aims of the current study were to examine: 1) types and rates of sleep disturbance among a sample of college students, 2) associations between sleep disturbance, AS, and depression symptoms, and 3) AS and depression symptoms by …
The Relationship Between Glucocorticoids And The Humoral Immune Response To Mycoplasma Gallisepticum Challenges In Eastern Bluebirds, Joshua Smith
Honors Theses
Numerous studies have examined relationships between adrenal glucocorticoids and the immune system’s ability to fight disease. The relationship can vary, with glucocorticoids having either stimulatory or inhibitory effects. The pathogenic bacterium Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) elicits an adaptive immune response in birds, in which B cells produce MG-specific antibodies to fight the infection and prevent reoccurrence. Previous research found that Eastern Bluebirds that produce the most antibodies in response to MG infection also have the highest glucocorticoid levels. This finding led to the current study investigating whether corticosterone, the primary glucocorticoid in birds, stimulates production of antibodies in response to immune …
Electronic Health Records And Health Information Exchange And Their Impact On International Healthcare System Efficiency, David Pfaehler
Electronic Health Records And Health Information Exchange And Their Impact On International Healthcare System Efficiency, David Pfaehler
Honors Theses
The 19th century epidemiological transition in healthcare caused a major shift in physician focus from curing one-time, deadly illness to managing chronic disease. Now, even the most advanced international healthcare systems must find a way to increase their efficiency in order to compensate for heightened strains on medical systems and swelling costs of healthcare delivery. Fortunately, recent technological innovation and, chiefly, the growth of Electronic Health Records (EHRs) provide a potential solution to this looming threat. EHRs are digital charts with the potential to store and share patient health data among providers to offer the most informed, streamlined care available. …
Influences Of Anti-Bd Bacteria On Amphibians And Their Microbiomes, Emme L. Schmidt
Influences Of Anti-Bd Bacteria On Amphibians And Their Microbiomes, Emme L. Schmidt
Honors Thesis
The fungal pathogen Batrochochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) has been threatening amphibian populations across the globe. Recent work has discovered that bacteria isolated from certain populations of amphibians protect hosts from this pathogen. This project focuses on the anti-fungal mechanisms of Serratia marcescens, a species of bacteria isolated from a Costa Rican frog that dramatically inhibited Bd in culture. Wild-type and recombinant S. marcescens was introduced to the microbiomes of a live amphibian host, Acris blanchardi (Blanchard’s Cricket Frog) and then challenged with Bd to examine the protective effects of this bacteria. The experiment includes recombinant S. marcescens with …
Socioeconomic Status And Symptoms Of Anxiety And Depression In Pregnant Women, Meagan Mandabach
Socioeconomic Status And Symptoms Of Anxiety And Depression In Pregnant Women, Meagan Mandabach
Honors Theses
Pregnancy is a period of great change in a woman’s body as her baby develops. During this period, women commonly experience symptoms of anxiety (Dennis et al., 2017) and depression (Shidhaye & Giri, 2014). Literature has suggested that socioeconomic status (SES) can contribute to the severity at which pregnant women experience anxiety and depression (Arora & Aeri, 2019; Field et al., 2008; Shagufta & Shams, 2019), and women of low socioeconomic status may be more likely to experience symptoms of anxiety and depression during pregnancy (Field et al., 2008). The present study aimed to assess the relationships between household income …
Characterization Of A Plasmid-Based Dna Vaccine For Simian Immunodeficiency Virus, Priya Sanipara
Characterization Of A Plasmid-Based Dna Vaccine For Simian Immunodeficiency Virus, Priya Sanipara
Honors Theses
Described as one of the world’s worst pandemics, HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infects millions of people each year and is the cause for AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). Despite the development of vaccines for numerous infectious diseases such as polio, small pox, and influenza, a vaccine for HIV remains elusive due to the virus’s high mutation rate and ability to evade the immune system. HIV causes depletion of CD4+ lymphocytes, resulting in a weakened immune system. However, the development of a plasmid-based DNA vaccine approach may help revolutionize vaccine development for HIV due to its ability to confer cellular and humoral …

I love book fairs. At least I did until recently. I used to really enjoy discovering all the new titles; what's hot; what's not, meeting with publishers and editors, exchanging chit chat and business cards with new people and connecting with old friends, hugs all around, as they gave me the once-a-year update about their cats and kids.
Projected Deaths Of Despair From Covid-19, Stephen Petterson, John M. Westfall, Benjamin F. Miller
Projected Deaths Of Despair From Covid-19, Stephen Petterson, John M. Westfall, Benjamin F. Miller
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
More Americans could lose their lives to deaths of despair, deaths due to drug, alcohol, and suicide, if we do not do something immediately. Deaths of despair have been on the rise for the last decade, and in the context of COVID-19, deaths of despair should be seen as the epidemic within the pandemic. The goal of this report is to predict what deaths of despair we might see based on three assumptions during COVID-19: economic recovery, relationship between deaths of despair and unemployment, and geography. Across nine different scenarios, additional deaths of despair range from 27,644 (quick recovery, smallest …
Trp Channels In Cardiovascular Disease, Albert Yu
Trp Channels In Cardiovascular Disease, Albert Yu
Doctoral Dissertations
Transient receptor potential (TRP) channels are evolutionarily conserved ion channels that have been implicated in a wide range of physiological and pathophysiological responses. As versatile ion channels that are permeable to calcium, the exact nature of these ion channels have been furiously studied since its initial discovery in Drosophila. Many TRP channels are thought to be gated by PIP2, a well-known membrane signaling molecule. Here we show that membrane potential alters PIP2 in such a way to reduce TRPM7 activity, presumably through PIP2 depletion. This novel mechanism of TRPM7 regulation gives us a clearer picture into a complicated protein that …

Infection is a common and severe complication of burn injury: Sepsis accounts for 47% of postburn mortality. Burn-induced T cell suppression likely contributes to the increased infection susceptibility in burn patients. However, little is known about the kinetics of T cell dysfunction after burn and its underlying mechanisms. In this study, we show in a murine scald injury model that T cell activation of both CD4+ and CD8+ T cells as well as T cell cytokine production is suppressed acutely and persistently for at least 11 days after burn injury. Purified T cells from scald-injured mice exhibit normal T cell …

Endobronchial Tuberculosis: A Rare Presentation, Nadeem Kassam, Omar M. Aziz, Samina Somji, Grace Shayo
Internal Medicine, East Africa
Endobronchial tuberculosis (EBTB) is an infection of the tracheobronchial tree by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is common among young females. Patient can present with fever, cough, wheeze, with or without any constitutional symptoms. It presents as a diagnostic dilemma, as patient sputum smear can be false negative. CT scan may or may not show any abnormality, or any endobronchial lesion. Bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage and biopsy offers the diagnostic choice. We hereby report a case of a young immunocompetent Asian female who was found to have endobronchial pathology, leading to diagnosis and timely therapy.
Combatting Antibacterial Resistance With Phage Therapy, Linda Line
Combatting Antibacterial Resistance With Phage Therapy, Linda Line
Thinking Matters Symposium
Phage therapy is the use of viruses to treat bacterial infections. This therapeutic method offers a viable solution to antibiotic resistance among pathogenic bacteria. In this review, we discuss the strengths and weaknesses of phage therapy. Phages attack specific hosts, making them more narrow-spectrum than antibiotics. Adding genes for infection-fighting peptides to the genome may improve the effectiveness of phage therapy. Antimicrobial regulator peptide IDR-1018 is involved in modulation of the immune system. A research group has shown that incorporating a gene for IDR-1018 into phage T7 significantly increased the bactericidal effects in Escherichia coli. In another study, phage lysin …

Cas9 Mediated Gene Drive Might Be The Best Way To Eradicate Malaria Worldwide, Merveidie L. Bayingana
Thinking Matters Symposium
Malaria is a disease caused by a protozoan parasite that is transmitted by the Anopheles female mosquito. Some parts of the world, such as the US, have successfully eliminated malaria, but malaria is still an enormous threat in many African countries. Although efforts exist to prevent and control the spread of malaria, the rate of death it causes is still higher in the poorest countries. The use of impregnated mosquito nets and insecticides do not seem to be enough to stop it. This review of the literature will discuss some genetic approaches to controlling mosquitoes. One such approach has been …

Design And Synthesis Of Novel Analogs As Potential Antitubercular Agents, Peggy Mccluggage
Honors Theses
Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious, airborne disease which primarily infects the lungs. One-third of the world’s population is currently estimated to be infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), the causative agent for TB [1]. Current treatment for this disease requires at least six months of taking multiple antibiotics with undesirable side effects [2]. Difficulty in complying to this regimen as well as the prevalence of HIV/AIDS has led to antimicrobial resistance seen in Mtb. In order to combat the Multi-Drug Resistant and Extensively-Drug Resistant strains of the disease-causing bacteria, preventative care and novel antibiotics are urgently needed [3]. The purpose for …

Cardiac Manifestations Of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (Covid-19): A Comprehensive Review, Faryal Tahir, Taha Bin Arif, Jawad Ahmed, Farheen Malik, Muhammad Khalid
Faculty and Staff Publications
Since its origin in China, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection has become a pandemic and spread to 209 countries. As coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a very rapidly emerging disease, organ-specific studies related to it have been reported. Apart from respiratory findings, some studies have highlighted inflammatory consequences in the heart, kidney, and/or liver as well. Cardiac involvement in COVID-19 seems to be a result of an inflammatory storm in response to the infection. Moreover, direct viral invasion of cardiomyocytes, as well as a myocardial injury due to oxidative stress, may account for acute cardiac injury in …

Child Marriage In The U.S.: Loopholes In State Marriage Laws Perpetuate Child Marriage, Sarah Ochieng
Immigration and Human Rights Law Review
The practice of child marriage is often discussed in the context of developing countries and many people find it unthinkable that child marriage also occurs in developed countries such as the United States of America. However, child marriage is a serious problem in the United States that affects thousands of children each year. This comment reviews the loopholes in state marriage laws. Part II considers the scope of child marriage as a human rights violation and the effects of child marriage. It also provides a background of the loopholes in state marriage laws, and a focus on the marriage laws …
