Bob Miller: The Irving Berlin Of Memphis, Joel Collin Roberts

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation is a study of the life and music of early country music songwriter Bob Miller (1895-1955). Miller was a prolific songwriter, who wrote music of multiple genres, but he was also a performer and recording artist during the 1920s and 1930s. As an early white composer of blues, he was an important figure during the blues craze of the early 1920s. The research and musical analysis that have been the foundation of this study answer questions about Millers life and his lasting influence. This study begins with the details of Millers early life and his career as a …

Tecumseh And Tenskwatawa: Myths, Memories, And Messages For Present Times, Matt Hoerauf Jan 2020

Tecumseh And Tenskwatawa: Myths, Memories, And Messages For Present Times, Matt Hoerauf

Wayne State University Theses

Tecumseh has been hailed as the most famous Indigenous leader in the United States and Canada. Many scholars have bemoaned the difficulty to separating man from myth. One thing is clear: there could be no Tecumseh without his brother Tenskwatawa. It was Tenskwatawa who first had a religious awakening that birthed a spiritual movement. It was Tenskwatawa who was the first leader of this pan-Indigenous group of followers. Tecumseh’s leadership would not emerge until nearly six years later. In the many works on Tecumseh, Tenskwatawa’s story can be easily found. However, he is nearly always portrayed as less important and …

International Lawyers As Disrupters Of Corruption: Business And Human Rights In Africa’S Most Populous Country—Nigeria, Jayanth K. Krishnan Jan 2020

International Lawyers As Disrupters Of Corruption: Business And Human Rights In Africa’S Most Populous Country—Nigeria, Jayanth K. Krishnan

Articles by Maurer Faculty

Be it bribery, embezzlement, or the abuse of public trust, corruption poses a major challenge to global security and democratic governance, along with undermining the rule of law, especially within the Global South. Key to this phenomenon is understanding how lawyers are enabling but also disrupting this epidemic. Unfortunately, the literature on this subject is lacking. This study, therefore, offers a nuanced story of globalization and the complicated role that lawyers play in corruption, by relying on the case study of Nigeria—a crucial Global South market that has the largest population on the African continent. While Nigeria has been able …

A Hunger For Justice : Everyday Forms Of Latinx Resistance In New York State's Capital Region, Cassandra Andrusz- Ho Ching Jan 2020

A Hunger For Justice : Everyday Forms Of Latinx Resistance In New York State's Capital Region, Cassandra Andrusz- Ho Ching

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Low-income racialized communities have always disproportionately struggled with food system inequities. However, after the 2008 financial crisis, conditions have become more precarious, especially in Latinx communities. This context has resulted in intensified food system inequities, manifesting as food insecurity, high food pricing, inconsistent and partial food programming, diet related diseases, low wages, worker and environmental rights abuses. This dissertation examines how low-income Latinx communities, respond to these intensified inequities in the New York State Capital Region from 2008-2018. Through qualitative research, interviews and observations, I assess the nature and context of everyday practices that undermine or resist food system inequities, …

Real Men Don't Get Lipos : Gender, Political Economy, And Biomedicine In Colombia's Male Beauty Industry, Jose Alejandro Arango-Londono Jan 2020

Real Men Don't Get Lipos : Gender, Political Economy, And Biomedicine In Colombia's Male Beauty Industry, Jose Alejandro Arango-Londono

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The last few years in Colombia have seen the rise and expansion of male beauty industry. Such growth seems to suggest a shift from entrenched gendered ideas as well as new markets and economic opportunities to pursue. This dissertation is the result of eighteen months of ethnographic fieldwork in Cali, Colombia focusing on how the development of male beauty has emerged in a context that is profoundly shaped by the legacy of armed conflict and drug-trafficking. The expansion of male beauty industry flourishes in a political and economic moment in Colombia where neoliberal policies are prevalent in the state’s agenda.

The Last Step To Whiteness : American Jews, Civil Rights, And Assimilation, 1954-1988, Eric Morgenson Jan 2020

The Last Step To Whiteness : American Jews, Civil Rights, And Assimilation, 1954-1988, Eric Morgenson

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This dissertation examines the relationship between American Jews and African Americans through the prism of evolving Jewish whiteness. In the post-World War II period, American Jews were an outsider group that were moving into the mainstream. American Jews interested in assimilating tied themselves to the cause of African American civil rights in the 1950s and 1960s. This was partially motivated by a desire to help an oppressed minority work towards equality in the United States. However, it was also motivated in part by a desire to aid in their own assimilation process. The idea of creating a colorblind American society …

The Bourgeoisie And The Divine : Prophecy, Utopias, And Politics In The July Monarchy, Sarah E. Pace Jan 2020

The Bourgeoisie And The Divine : Prophecy, Utopias, And Politics In The July Monarchy, Sarah E. Pace

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This dissertation analyzes the complexity of popular religious trends under a nominally secular government through the examination of prophecy during the French July Monarchy period (1830-1848). Throughout this era, several diverse individuals claimed to be the recipients of supernatural visions and visitations. These “prophets” attracted interest, and genuine belief, from a wide range of contemporaries. Studying the supernatural visionaries of this period, and those drawn to such phenomena, illustrates the nature of contemporary interests and values. Why were supernatural visitations so successful and appealing at this specific time? Attraction to these visionaries reveals political and social anxieties and upheavals that …

Humanity’S Best Friend: A Dog-Centric Approach To Addressing Global Challenges, Eric Strauss Jan 2020

Humanity’S Best Friend: A Dog-Centric Approach To Addressing Global Challenges, Eric Strauss

Biology Faculty Works

No other animal has a closer mutualistic relationship with humans than the dog (Canis familiaris). Domesticated from the Eurasian grey wolf (Canis lupus), dogs have evolved alongside humans over millennia in a relationship that has transformed dogs and the environments in which humans and dogs have co-inhabited. The story of the dog is the story of recent humanity, in all its biological and cultural complexity. By exploring human-dog-environment interactions throughout time and space, it is possible not only to understand vital elements of global history, but also to critically assess our present-day relationship with the natural world, and to begin …

Factors Affecting Adherence To Diabetes Management Recommendations Among Afro-Caribbean Farm Workers, Aretha Meritian Townsend Jan 2020

Factors Affecting Adherence To Diabetes Management Recommendations Among Afro-Caribbean Farm Workers, Aretha Meritian Townsend

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a global epidemic, impacting the economy and quality of life of affected individuals. The treatment and management of the disease often rely heavily on self-efficacy and provider guidance. Adherence to provider treatment regimens can help to prevent T2DM-related complications. However, non-adherence to T2DM regimens is a growing concern among minority populations, where T2DM is highly prevalent. Limited research is available for the Afro-Caribbean migrant farmworker (ACMF) with high rates of diabetes and an alarmingly high rate of non-adherence to treatment recommendations which is further complicated by low literacy, common cultural practices, and poor diets. …

Firearm Restriction And Its Impact In Reducing Violent Crimes In California, Sampson C. Onwuka Jan 2020

Firearm Restriction And Its Impact In Reducing Violent Crimes In California, Sampson C. Onwuka

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

There have been recurring incidents of gun violence, murder, and mass shootings that have raised public concern on the dangers of guns, and people have demanded government regulation on firearms usage. Studies have attributed these incidents to non-strict laws on guns; however, it was unclear whether firearm restrictions affected California's violent crime reduction. This quasi-experimental, quantitative study was focused on finding out the impact of gun violence restraining orders (GVROs) on violent crime reduction in California. Four research questions addressed the changes in the variables after the establishment of the GVRO. Secondary data from the California Department of Justice were …

Politics At Play: The 1985 World Festival Of Youth And Students And Its Role In Soviet And Cold War History, Michaela Lewalski

Wayne State University Theses

The Twelfth World Festival of Youth and Students that took place in Moscow in 1985 has largely been forgotten, but historical analysis of the event reveals that it had significant implications for the Soviet Union and Cold War. This thesis argues that the festival was a public ceremony that the Soviet Union used to prove its domestic stability and its role as a leader in the fight for world peace to its own people, counterparts in the West, and allies and potential allies in the South and East. The symbols and concrete measures that the Soviet Union used—and the reactions …

Intermittent Fasting (If) Promotes Longevity Through Alterations Of The Mammalian Target Of Rapamycin (Mtor) And The Epigenome, Tayt Boeckholt Jan 2020

Intermittent Fasting (If) Promotes Longevity Through Alterations Of The Mammalian Target Of Rapamycin (Mtor) And The Epigenome, Tayt Boeckholt

Biology and Microbiology Graduate Students Plan B Research Projects

Many studies with a range of subjects from Nematodes to Homo sapiens have found intermittent fasting (IF) to significantly improve the cardiometabolic health of individuals, but how IF promotes longevity through epigenetic modulations remains a sparse understanding throughout the literature. The process of aging may be characterized by a loss of cellular identity sprouted from a disrupted epigenome rich with information for a cell, while also losing the ability to recycle ineffective cellular components. The nutrient-sensing kinase Mammalian Target of Rapamycin (mTOR) is disrupted during bouts of fasting which allows for the recycling of cellular components through increased autophagy. Furthermore, …

An Analysis Of Early Modern Philosopher Mary Astell And A Critique Of The Western Canon, Analisea L. Araya Jan 2020

An Analysis Of Early Modern Philosopher Mary Astell And A Critique Of The Western Canon, Analisea L. Araya

2020 Symposium Oral Presentations

In my paper I address the unfoundedness of leaving out certain voices in the historical studies of philosophy. In order to make this point I investigate a brilliant thinker of the 17th and 18th centuries, Mary Astell. I also address, analyze and critique the Western Canon for leaving out the philosophies of women, and highlight social constructivism and social representation theory in education and the philosophies behind these concepts. Despite the misleading drift of the Western canon, there were brilliant female thinkers throughout the history of philosophy. Telling only a single story of something that has so much depth, history, …

Maurice E. Peloubet: A Life Of Impact On Accountancy And Society, Brandi Holley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Maurice E. Peloubet was one of accountancy’s major players during the profession’s highly evolutionary period in the United States from before World War I to the Vietnam War. Though Peloubet spent his entire career from 1911 to 1964 in public accounting, he also promoted the profession on the academic, governmental, and international fronts. This dissertation explores his contributions to the profession of accountancy and in turn society at large. Particular focus is placed on his role in the evolution of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), his lobbying efforts before Congress concerning the Last-In, First-Out (LIFO) Inventory method …

Instant Schools: The Frenzied Formation And Early Days Of The Mississippi Private School Association, Ernest Flora Iv Jan 2020

Instant Schools: The Frenzied Formation And Early Days Of The Mississippi Private School Association, Ernest Flora Iv

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The founding leadership of the Mississippi Private School Association (MPSA) used individual experience and extensive networking via the Citizens’ Council along with the community’s belief and desire to maintain white-only schools to create a coalition of quickly formed but well-resourced private schools. This political and social clout afforded them the ability to create a large, powerful organization almost “instantly” during a pivotal moment of southern educational history. Scholar Kenneth T. Andrews called the establishment of all-white academies in Mississippi, “a countermovement strategy that floout of the prior history of organized white resistance to the civil-rights movement.” The significance of this …

James And Rose Aggrey And The Black Atlantic Gestations Of African Nationalism, Karen Sotiropoulos Jan 2020

James And Rose Aggrey And The Black Atlantic Gestations Of African Nationalism, Karen Sotiropoulos

History Faculty Publications

Gold Coast native James Emman Kwegyir Aggrey has been named at different times the father of African education and the Booker T. Washington of Africa after having moved to the United States in 1898 to pursue higher education and inspiring African nationalists like Nnamdi Azikiwe, Kwame Nkrumah and Peter Koinange. This article considers how his upbringing in Cape Coast and two decades in the United States shaped the political vision he brought back to Africa in the 1920s when he toured with the Phelps Stokes Commission lecturing about educational initiatives. It explores the ways the proto- Nationalist consciousness he had …

Latino Evangelicals: How Their Multiple Identity Influences Their Political Preferences, Noemi Hernandez Alexander

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The pews of the American Evangelical church are browning, and so is the Evangelical voting bloc. Latino immigrants are fueling the growth of the Evangelical church in America and Latinos have the potential to influence the Evangelical voting bloc writ large. However, we have a limited understanding of the political needs of the Latino Evangelical who identifies as an ethnic person and a religious person. As the discipline of political science attempts to predict, describe, or explain the political attitudes of Latinos, understanding the political preferences of the Latino Evangelical is essential. This study seeks to understand how race and …

English Abstract:

The thesis proposes Whole-Person healing mission as an effective for pastoral ministry and mission to respond to the challenge of the ineffective evangelistic mission as the critical hindrance to Christian ministry and mission. The study argues that the whole-person healing mission and evangelization of Granville Oral Roberts(1918-2009) through revival meetings, broadcasting, education, and medical service in the twentieth century would serve as a new theological breakthrough. His whole-person healing mission became a significant ideological foundation of holistic mission, faith mission, mission …

Understanding Well-Being Among Black Female Student Activists Attending Predominantly White Institutions: A Narrative Inquiry Approach, Stephen Grey

Theses and Dissertations

As engagement in activism continues to increase on campus and nationally, a paucity of research exists on the experiences of Black student activists attending PWI and their well-being. Narrative inquiry was utilized in this study to better understand the lived experiences of two Black student activists. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with both participants to gain in-depth narratives of their experiences engaging in activism on PWIs. A narrative thematic approach was used to analyze the results. The findings suggested that the Black student participants experienced benefits (increased sense of belonging and racial cohesion) and consequences (activist burnout and decreased academic performance) …

The Construction Of The American Catholic Church: Gender, Sexuality, And Patriotism In U.S. Catholic Media, 1917–1970, William Korinko

Theses and Dissertations--Gender and Women's Studies

This project explores the complex relationship between religion, culture, and politics in the United States during the twentieth century by examining a largely unexplored pocket of Roman Catholic pamphlet literature, as well as other forms of Catholic media, including newspapers, magazines, radio programs, and television shows. During the twentieth century Catholic media makers spent a considerable amount of energy speaking and writing about issues related to gender and sexuality, and they often did so in racially coded terms. In addition to making prescriptions of what was appropriate and moral sexual and gendered behavior, these media makers repeatedly made the case …

“Checking Off Boxes”: Teachers Describe Civic Education In World History: A Mixed Methods Study, Carly Claire Muetterties Jan 2020

“Checking Off Boxes”: Teachers Describe Civic Education In World History: A Mixed Methods Study, Carly Claire Muetterties

Theses and Dissertations--Education Sciences

Scholars have long identified fostering democratic citizenship as a primary purpose of public schooling in the United States, meaning schools should intentionally prepare students with the knowledge and skills needed for active, informed democratic civic life. Furthermore, global interconnectedness has reshaped needed knowledge to participate in civic life. History is often identified as subject content well suited to address civic education and prepare students for citizenship. Though scholars point to a connection between world history and civic education, there is little empirical research studying how civic education informs teachers’ curriculum and instruction in world history. The purpose of this explanatory …

Theses and Dissertations--History

This paper documents the comprehensive process of designing and executing a video oral history project through a case study of The Living History Oral History Project which is accessioned to the Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History. Discussions of each phase of the project from concept, design, field work, archiving, and interpretation demonstrates how expanding technology increases the narrative opportunities presented by oral history research. The added feature of digital video technology creates visuality, which is an expansion on Alessandro Portelli’s concepts of orality and history telling. Since discoverability and accessibility is a traditional problem in using oral history …
