Covid-19: An Update From England’S High Consequence Infectious Diseases Intensive Care Unit Leads, Daniel Martin, Sarah Platt, Peter Hampshire, Chris Meadows

Peninsula Medical School

Each winter, the population and healthcare services around the globe brace themselves for what is usually a fairly unpredictable bombardment by a myriad of microbial pathogens. From an immunological perspective, human hosts are constantly modifying our defences, aiming to reduce the potential impact of this invisible force. We can bolster the fight by using annual vaccinations against influenza but by definition, we must already have an intimate knowledge of our enemy to generate this additional immunological shield. Sadly, newcomers on the microbial scene tend to slip straight through net and hit us hard. Hence the effectiveness of the seasonal flu …

The aim of this review is to systematically describe and quantify the effects of PA interventions on alcohol and other drug use outcomes, and to identify any apparent effect of PA dose and type, possible mechanisms of effect, and any other aspect of intervention delivery (e.g. key behaviour change processes), within a framework to inform the design and evaluation of future interventions. Systematic searches were designed to identify published and grey literature on the role of PA for reducing the risk of progression to alcohol and other drug use (PREVENTION), supporting individuals to reduce alcohol and other drug use for …

The Effect Of A Dementia Awareness Class On Changing Dementia Attitudes In Adolescents, Nicolas Farina, Laura J. Hughes, Ellen Jones, Sahdia Parveen, Alys W. Griffiths, Kathleen Galvin, Sube Banerjee Jan 2020

The Effect Of A Dementia Awareness Class On Changing Dementia Attitudes In Adolescents, Nicolas Farina, Laura J. Hughes, Ellen Jones, Sahdia Parveen, Alys W. Griffiths, Kathleen Galvin, Sube Banerjee

Peninsula Medical School

Background Current evidence suggests that negative and stigmatising attitudes towards dementia may develop at a young age. There are a number of dementia education and awareness initiatives aimed at reducing stigma, though they have not been robustly evaluated to establish the impact on dementia attitudes or suitability in adolescent populations. This study explored the efficacy and satisfaction of one such initiative (Dementia Friends) in a British adolescent sample. Methods 301 adolescents (M = 12.6 years old, SD = 0.73) were assigned to either receive Dementia Friends (a 60-min interactive class that teaches about dementia and its effects on people’s lives) …

Ecosystem Services Of Temporary Streams Differ Between Wet And Dry Phases In Regions With Contrasting Climates And Economies, Rachel Stubbington, Mike Acreman, Vicenç Acuña, Philip J. Boon, Andrew J. Boulton, Judy England, David Gilvear, Tim Sykes, Paul J. Wood

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Temporary streams are dynamic ecosystems in which mosaics of flowing, ponded and dry habitats support high biodiversity of both aquatic and terrestrial species. Species interact within habitats to perform or facilitate processes that vary in response to changing habitat availability. A natural capital approach recognizes that, through such processes, the ‘natural assets’ of all ecosystems deliver services that benefit people. The ecosystem services of temporary streams remain largely unexplored, in particular those provided during ponded and dry phases. In addition, recent characterizations have focused on dryland systems, and it remains unclear how service provision varies among different climatic regions, or …

Beyond The Crossroads Of Magic, Health, And Well-Being, Steven Bagienski, Gustav Kuhn Jan 2020

Beyond The Crossroads Of Magic, Health, And Well-Being, Steven Bagienski, Gustav Kuhn

School of Psychology

Magicians and scientists have begun collaborating to gain insight into various psychological functions. However, one underexplored area is the use of magic tricks to enhance health and well-being. Several magic programmes currently use magic tricks to enhance cognitive, emotional, social, and physical well-being. The applications of these magic programmes range from physical and psychological therapies to gang prevention, hospitals and classrooms. A few programmes have been empirically investigated and there is now a growing number of empirical studies that explore the well- being value of magic. Therefore, we conducted an up-to-date summaryreview of magic, health, and well-being. These studies are …

A Reformulated Contextual Model Of Psychotherapy For Treating Anxiety And Depression, Michael E. Hyland Jan 2020

A Reformulated Contextual Model Of Psychotherapy For Treating Anxiety And Depression, Michael E. Hyland

School of Psychology

This paper describes a reformulated contextual model that uses cognitive theory (dual process theory), motivation theory (personality) and behavioral adaptation (self-correcting control systems) to show how anxiety and depression are caused, treated and prevented by an interaction between people and contexts. Depression and anxiety are the result of implicit beliefs (not cognitions) that all experience is unrewarding and threatening, these being components of the implicit belief that life is bad. Implicit beliefs are formed automatically from contextual cues and in healthy individuals are consistent with rational appraisal. They become more negative than reality through a process of adaptation when behaviors, …

Investigating The Role Of Tam (Tyro3, Axl And Mertk) Family Receptors In Merlin Deficient Tumours, Foram Dave Jan 2020

Investigating The Role Of Tam (Tyro3, Axl And Mertk) Family Receptors In Merlin Deficient Tumours, Foram Dave

Peninsula Medical School Theses

Mutations in the NF2 gene, which codes for the tumour suppressor Merlin, is responsible for the development of all Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2)-related tumours including schwannomas, meningiomas and ependymomas. These tumours can also occur spontaneously in non-NF2 patients. The only available treatments for this group of tumours are surgery and radiosurgery/radiotherapy. Hence, there is an urgent need for new effective drug-based treatments.TAM (TYRO3, AXL and MERTK) family receptors are involved in tumour development, progression, metastasis and resistance to targeted therapies in several cancers. Our group previously showed overexpression and hyper-activation of all three TAM family receptors and their ligand Gas6 …

Nutrition-Related Symptoms In Adult Survivors Of Critical Illness Who Are Eating Orally: A Scoping Review Protocol., Louise Albrich, Lee Anne S. Chapple, Amelia Nock, Emma J. Ridley, Mary Hickson Jan 2020

Nutrition-Related Symptoms In Adult Survivors Of Critical Illness Who Are Eating Orally: A Scoping Review Protocol., Louise Albrich, Lee Anne S. Chapple, Amelia Nock, Emma J. Ridley, Mary Hickson

School of Health Professions

OBJECTIVE: This review will explore and map the current literature on the nutritional impact of symptoms reported by adult survivors of critical illness who are eating orally after discharge from the intensive care unit (ICU). INTRODUCTION: Survivors of critical care often experience ICU-acquired weakness and poor functional recovery. It is plausible that nutrition interventions throughout their recovery could improve outcomes for these patients. Although a growing number of studies aim to explore the effect of nutrition delivered in the early phases of critical illness, this is also important post-ICU discharge, particularly in already nutritionally compromised patients presenting with muscle loss …

Earning Extra Credit Or Losing Extra Credit? A Classroom Experiment On Framing Incentives As Gains Or Losses, Vassilis Dalakas, Kristin Stewart Jan 2020

Earning Extra Credit Or Losing Extra Credit? A Classroom Experiment On Framing Incentives As Gains Or Losses, Vassilis Dalakas, Kristin Stewart

Atlantic Marketing Journal

This exploratory study examines if the way incentives are framed (gains versus losses) impacts how students respond to them. Sixty-two students in two sections of the same undergraduate Marketing course were offered the incentive of an optional final exam by answering correctly quiz questions throughout the semester. One section received the incentive as a gain (opportunity to earn an optional final exam if you get enough quiz points) whereas the other section received it as a loss (final is optional, but you may lose it if you don’t get enough quiz points). Consistent with the principles of loss aversion, framing …

Economic Strength And Micropolitan Statistical Areas: Looking Beyond Generalities, W. Frank Thompson Jr., Ayesha Tariq, Connie Nott Jan 2020

Economic Strength And Micropolitan Statistical Areas: Looking Beyond Generalities, W. Frank Thompson Jr., Ayesha Tariq, Connie Nott

Atlantic Marketing Journal

Facility location decisions serve an important role in setting up efficient and cost-effective supply chains. While metropolitan areas may appear an obvious choice for many companies, nonmetropolitan areas deserve consideration. In the past, nonmetropolitan areas have been broadly classified as “rural” with reports of economic decline. This research looks beyond the general category of nonmetropolitan by dividing the area into micropolitan statistical areas and non-core statistical areas. The authors use U.S. Census data from the years 2010 to 2016 to analyze changes in population, median household income, retail employment, and retail salaries in Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi. Companies can use …

The End Of Antitrust History Revisited, Lina M. Khan Jan 2020

The End Of Antitrust History Revisited, Lina M. Khan

Faculty Scholarship

This Review engages Tim Wu’s book, The Curse of Bigness, to explain the significance of the current rupture in antitrust and to situate it within a broader intellectual trajectory. Debates over the foundational purpose of antitrust are not new, and examining how this latest clash fits alongside previous contestations is essential for understanding what has yielded the current contestability and assessing the competing visions.

Part I of this Review summarizes Wu’s chief contributions in his recent work, focusing on three tenets that form the basis of the book. Part II offers an analytic breakdown of the overhaul in antitrust …

Public Health Law Tools: A Brief Guide, Kristen Underhill Jan 2020

Public Health Law Tools: A Brief Guide, Kristen Underhill

Faculty Scholarship

The COVID-19 pandemic offers a threat with few precedents in modern times and tests the tools of modern surveillance and public health law. The goal of this chapter is to provide a brief overview of the types of measures that state and federal governments can invoke to treat and prevent the spread of infectious disease. The following sections will provide an orientation to domestic public health law followed by the types of measures available to state and federal public health authorities.

Although this chapter does not consider international institutions, treaties, or norms that affect public health, these are also essential …

Power In Human Rights Advocate And Rightsholder Relationships: Critiques, Reforms, And Challenges, Sarah Knuckey, Benjamin Hoffman, Jeremy Perelman, Gulika Reddy, Alejandra Ancheita, Meetali Jain Jan 2020

Power In Human Rights Advocate And Rightsholder Relationships: Critiques, Reforms, And Challenges, Sarah Knuckey, Benjamin Hoffman, Jeremy Perelman, Gulika Reddy, Alejandra Ancheita, Meetali Jain

Faculty Scholarship

Human rights advocacy can construct passive “victims,” objectify or displace rightsholders and affected communities, and contribute to their disempowerment. In response to critiques – made by rightsholders, activists, and scholars alike – about the values and effects of such disempowering advocacy models, many advocates are increasingly prioritizing an understanding of these dynamics and reforming practice to better center and support the agency of directly affected individuals and groups. However, the tactics and modalities of these efforts are under-examined in scholarly literature, and many human rights advocates lack access to adequate documentation of tactics and spaces for peer learning. In this …

Rule By Data: The End Of Markets?, Katharina Pistor Jan 2020

Rule By Data: The End Of Markets?, Katharina Pistor

Faculty Scholarship

This Article explores data as a source and, in their processed variant, as a means of governance that will likely replace both markets and the law. Discussing data not as an object of transactions or an object of governance, but as a tool for governing others on a scale that rivals that of nation states with their law, seems a fitting topic for a special issue that is devoted to the legal construction of markets. Here, I argue that while it may well be the case that law constitutes markets, markets are not the only way in which economic relations …

On Trust, Law, And Expecting The Worst, Elizabeth F. Emens Jan 2020

On Trust, Law, And Expecting The Worst, Elizabeth F. Emens

Faculty Scholarship

This Review has three parts. Part I aims to convey something of the breadth and interest of Hasday’s fascinating new book, foregrounding the role of gender and beginning to touch the subject of trust. Part II delves briefly but widely into the theme of trust, which pervades the book and invites further examination. Part III presents a framework that combines affective trust and epistemic curiosity and applies this framework to illuminate and sort Hasday’s proposals for reform; to critique a recent, dramatic change in the evidentiary treatment of marital confidences; and to devise a novel approach to prenuptial agreements. Throughout, …

Criminal Deterrence: A Review Of The Missing Literature, Alex Raskolnikov Jan 2020

Criminal Deterrence: A Review Of The Missing Literature, Alex Raskolnikov

Faculty Scholarship

This review of the criminal deterrence literature focuses on the questions that are largely missing from many recent, excellent, comprehensive reviews of that literature, and from the literature itself. By “missing” I mean, first, questions that criminal deterrence scholars have ignored either completely or to a large extent. These questions range from fundamental (the distributional analysis of the criminal justice system), to those hidden in plain sight (economic analysis of misdemeanors), to those that are well-known yet mostly overlooked (the role of positive incentives, offender’s mental state, and celerity of punishment). I also use “missing” to refer to the areas …

Antitrust & Corruption: Overruling Noerr, Tim Wu Jan 2020

Antitrust & Corruption: Overruling Noerr, Tim Wu

Faculty Scholarship

We live in a time when concerns about influence over the American political process by powerful private interests have reached an apogee, both on the left and the right. Among the laws originally intended to fight excessive private influence over republican institutions were the antitrust laws, whose sponsors were concerned not just with monopoly, but also its influence over legislatures and politicians. While no one would claim that the antitrust laws were meant to be comprehensive anti-corruption laws, there can be little question that they were passed with concerns about the political influence of powerful firms and industry cartels.

Since …
