Assessing Cervical Cancer Knowledge Among High-Risk Women Living In The Us-Mexico Border Region In El Paso, Tx, Crystal Costa
Assessing Cervical Cancer Knowledge Among High-Risk Women Living In The Us-Mexico Border Region In El Paso, Tx, Crystal Costa
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Despite major decreases in cervical cancer incidence rates in the U.S. over the past several decades, certain populations of women continue to be disproportionately affected by it. One of these groups includes US Latina/Hispanic women who have the highest cervical cancer incidence rates as compared to their racial/ethnic counterparts. To improve detection and prevention in US Latina/Hispanic women, it is important to first understand their current knowledge and health literacy with regard to cervical cancer.
This cross-sectional study examined perceived self-knowledge of cervical cancer and cervical cancer functional health literacy in high-risk Hispanic women living in the El Paso, Texas …

Race, Gender And Mediated Representations In The Farah Strike, Matthew Desiderio Minnich
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
May 1972, 4,000 garment workers at Farah Manufacturing Company in El Paso went out on strike for the right to be represented by a union. The strike against Farah was the first major social movement in the El Paso area in modern times. Over 80% of the striking workers were Latina. The female employees at Farah were at the forefront of the Chicana feminist movement. The labor battle at Farah proves the organic link between Chicana feminism and class struggle. The Farah strike caused a new family dynamic to rise from the ashes of the traditional Mexican household. Using Burke's …
Evaluating The Impact Of The In-Store Programming And Outreach Coalition (Ipoc) On Increasing Access To Healthy Food And Healthcare Services In Paso Del Norte Region: First-Person Account Of Stakeholders' Perspective, Dennis Nyachoti
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Grocery stores can provide a conducive environment for interventions targeting healthy eating and access to health services, particularly in low-income communities. Nationally, several organizations have implemented grocery store interventions and have shown impact on perceptions of purchasing nutritious food, especially by raising awareness of fruits and vegetables. However, most of those programs have not been implemented in a coordinated manner despite being delivered in the same location. Collaboration of local health promotion organizations with grocery stores could increase consumers' access to and selection of healthy foods, as well as access to and use of services.
This evaluation of the In-Store …
Validity Of A Portable X-Ray Fluorescence Device For Analyzing Field Dust Wipe Samples For Lead, Alexander Boakye Obeng
Validity Of A Portable X-Ray Fluorescence Device For Analyzing Field Dust Wipe Samples For Lead, Alexander Boakye Obeng
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Background and Significance. Interior dust lead loadings on floors and windowsills are reliable predictors of a child’s blood lead level and an important predictor in “clearance testing” of residences. The traditional method of determining dust lead levels on surfaces is to send dust wipe samples to a laboratory for analysis. These laboratory analyses are expensive and analysis reports typically take up to 2 weeks to complete. The portable X-ray fluorescence device has been touted as a technique that can provide fast, accurate, and precise results regarding the presence of dust lead hazards in residences but needs to be further evaluated …
A High-Temperature Valve Design For A Solid Oxide Fuel Cell/Gas Turbine Hybrid System, Cynthia Morales
A High-Temperature Valve Design For A Solid Oxide Fuel Cell/Gas Turbine Hybrid System, Cynthia Morales
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Systems containing high heat generation require thermal management, especially in a solid oxide fuel cell gas turbine (SOFC/GT) hybrid system. The startup of each system in a standalone configuration may be a trivial approach, but when coupled together, different dynamics are experienced. The SOFC/GT provide high theoretical efficiency due to the ability to recover the extra heat produced by the fuel cell (FC) to drive the gas turbine (GT). After recovering the energy recuperated in the GT, the exhaust gas heats the cathode inlet flow to the FC which is an advantage during nominal operation of the cycle but not …

Application Of Non-Seismic Methods To Analyze And Model The Geometry Of The Northern Margin Of The Onion Creek Salt Diapir, Paradox Basin, Utah, Julia Michelle Astromovich
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The Onion Creek salt diapir lies within the Paradox Basin of Utah where it forms part of a series of salt walls that separate the Paradox Basin into smaller sub-basins. These sub-basins and associated salt diapirs remain key to several oil and gas traps in the region. A series of anomalous tight folds occur on the northern side of the Onion Creek diapir within the Permian Cutler Group Undifferentiated. These folds are thought to be associated with a shallow detachment horizon with three possible origins:1) a weak shale layer within the Cutler Group, 2) a salt shoulder, or 3) a …
Accurate Replication Of An Ear Pinnae Geometry For Use In Acoustic Testing Of Spatial Cues And Sound Localization, Alejandra Belmont
Accurate Replication Of An Ear Pinnae Geometry For Use In Acoustic Testing Of Spatial Cues And Sound Localization, Alejandra Belmont
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Additive manufacturing (AM) enables freedom of design as well as fabrication of complex objects such as the human hear. In medical modeling there is a need for patient-specific customizable parts. The outer human ear consists of these main parts: the pinna, which naturally filters sound, and the ear canal, which is the point at which sound enters before being moved up to the tympanic membrane, otherwise known as the eardrum. In an attempt to accurately replicate ear models, the use of scanning and reverse engineering methods was used. A comparison of 3D laser scanning systems was performed to determine their …

Elucidating The Regulatory Mechanisms For The Cholesterol Catabolic Pathway Transcriptional Repressor Kstr Of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Chenoa D. Arico
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) is a bacterium that has been able to establish itself throughout evolution and is currently still an ever present threat resulting in approximately 2 million deaths per year worldwide. The ability for Mtb to utilize cholesterol as a carbon source is maintained through transcriptional regulation mechanisms not fully understood. The Rv3574 gene codes for the self-regulated TetR-like transcriptional repressor KstR that controls the expression of large clusters of cholesterol catabolic genes in Mtb. This study aims to provide insights on the regulatory mechanisms of cholesterol catabolism, which could be used as therapeutic target to treat and control …
Effect Of Temperature On A Piezoelectric Mass Flow Rate Sensor Signal, Lyan Eduardo Gutierrez Hernandez
Effect Of Temperature On A Piezoelectric Mass Flow Rate Sensor Signal, Lyan Eduardo Gutierrez Hernandez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
On this research, we are trying to demonstrate that a piezoelectric flow sensor made of PZT can produce a higher and fluctuating signal when exposed to elevated temperatures presented on the system. This type of application can be beneficial for systems that involve changes in temperature such as compressors and be able to predict certain situations presented on those systems that can be catastrophic, that is the case for surge and stall. Therefore, a system capable of going from 25â?°C-90â?°C was designed where a piezoelectric sensor was inserted at a specific location to analyze the signal produced by these changes …

Towards Making Videos Accessible For Low Vision Screen Magnifier Users, Ali Selman Aydin, Shirin Feiz, Vikas Ashok, Iv Ramakrishnan
Computer Science Faculty Publications
People with low vision who use screen magnifiers to interact with computing devices find it very challenging to interact with dynamically changing digital content such as videos, since they do not have the luxury of time to manually move, i.e., pan the magnifier lens to different regions of interest (ROIs) or zoom into these ROIs before the content changes across frames.
In this paper, we present SViM, a first of its kind screen-magnifier interface for such users that leverages advances in computer vision, particularly video saliency models, to identify salient ROIs in videos. SViM's interface allows users to zoom in/out …

Rotate-And-Press: A Non-Visual Alternative To Point-And-Click, Hae-Na Lee, Vikas Ashok, I. V. Ramakrishnan
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Most computer applications manifest visually rich and dense graphical user interfaces (GUIs) that are primarily tailored for an easy-and-efficient sighted interaction using a combination of two default input modalities, namely the keyboard and the mouse/touchpad. However, blind screen-reader users predominantly rely only on keyboard, and therefore struggle to interact with these applications, since it is both arduous and tedious to perform the visual 'point-and-click' tasks such as accessing the various application commands/features using just keyboard shortcuts supported by screen readers.
In this paper, we investigate the suitability of a 'rotate-and-press' input modality as an effective non-visual substitute for the visual …
The Framing Of Recycling Information Toward Behavioral Intention, Perla Celeste Perez
The Framing Of Recycling Information Toward Behavioral Intention, Perla Celeste Perez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Most studies have measured the relationship between self-reported recycling behavior and attitudes. Very little research has focused on how the framing of recycling information moderates this relationship. Moreover, even less research has examined how communication messages directly impacts self-efficacy of recycling. Thus, the aim of this study is to further understand factors that influence self-reported recycling behavioral intention and information framing. We predicted that pro-environmental behavior would be positively associated with climate change beliefs and recycling efficacy. We also predicted that individuals that read a positive recycling article would be more likely to intend to recycle than individuals who read …
Impact Of Cryptococcus Neoformans Polysaccharide Capsule On Astrocytes, Yeon Hwa Woo
Impact Of Cryptococcus Neoformans Polysaccharide Capsule On Astrocytes, Yeon Hwa Woo
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Cryptococcus neoformans is a neurotropic, opportunistic, encapsulated, yeast-like fungus that causes life-threatening meningoencephalitis in both healthy and immunocompromised individuals. C. neoformans infects 1,000,000 people and causes 210,000 deaths worldwide annually, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa. The polysaccharide capsule of C. neoformans is the fungus major virulent factor. Glucuronoxylomannan (GXM), the main component of the capsule is abundantly released into brain tissue during C. neoformans infection, causing immunosuppressive defects in the host. C. neoformans is inhaled from the environment, disseminate via bloodstream, and crosses the blood brain barrier (BBB) to cause cryptococcal meningoencephalitis (CM). Although CM causes significant mortality in HIV/AIDS patients, …

Planty For The People: A Community-Based Participatory Research Approach To Healthy, Plant-Based Food Access In The Border Region, Marina Villegas
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Access to food is an issue for many across the U.S., especially in low-income and high minority areas (Gallinar, et al., 2017). The border region of El Paso, Texas has several designated areas without access to supermarkets where residents may purchase food within a walking or short driving distance (HFAC, 2010). Researchers have linked food insecurity to nutritionally inadequate diets, which are shown to lead to obesity or other disorders like heart disease, diabetes, etc. (Marks, 2015; Craig and Mangels, 2009; Bartolotto, 2013). Food insecurity leads to an array of issues down the line that negatively affects not only health …
Sex Differences In The Mechanisms That Modulate The Neurochemical Effects Of Nicotine, Kevin Uribe
Sex Differences In The Mechanisms That Modulate The Neurochemical Effects Of Nicotine, Kevin Uribe
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Prior behavioral studies in our laboratory revealed that overexpression of the stress peptide, corticotrophin-releasing factor (CRF), in the mesocorticolimbic reward pathway enhanced the reinforcing effects of nicotine. The latter effect was greater in female versus male rats, suggesting that females are uniquely susceptible to the effects of stress on nicotine reinforcement. The goal of this dissertation was to examine the neurochemical mechanisms by which overexpression of CRF in the nucleus accumbens (NAc), a terminal region of the mesocorticolimbic pathway, modulates the behavioral effects of nicotine. Specifically, we examined whether nicotine-induced dopamine levels are altered by CRF overexpression via excitatory (glutamate) …
Antioxidant Intervention In Radical-Induced Protein Damage, Emmanuel Zubia
Antioxidant Intervention In Radical-Induced Protein Damage, Emmanuel Zubia
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Many environmental toxicants are known to increase free-radical production, which can create cellular havoc and lead to a myriad of ailments. Antioxidants can be used to ameliorate the prevalence of free radicals, potentially serving as prophylactics against radical-induced disorders. Many exogenous antioxidants are phytochemicals in origin, such as ascorbic acid, gallic acid, and ellagic acid. Some of these antioxidants can be found in traditional medicine, like tanshinone and brazilin, which have been studied and are known to have low cytotoxicity. Here we test the radical rescue capacity of a selected group of phytochemical antioxidants on protein rescue models. Specifically, our …

Digital abuse is on the rise. People increasingly use technology to perpetrate and exacerbate abusive conduct like stalking and harassment, manipulating digital tools to control and harm their victims. By some accounts, 95% of domestic-abuse cases involve technology, while a sizeable chunk of the U.S. population now admits to having suffered or perpetrated serious abuse online. To make matters worse, people often trivialize digital abuse or underestimate its prevalence. Even among those who do appreciate its severity, there remains ample disagreement about how to address it.
Although law can be a powerful tool to regulate digital abuse, legal responses are …

Disparities exist in the livelihood and opportunities for people living in America’s rural communities. These differences result in a much sicker rural America compared to its urban counterpart. Rural counties have higher rates of smoking, obesity, child poverty, and teen pregnancies than urban counties. More uninsured adults live in rural areas, causing rural hospitals to close and/or cut vital services such as obstetrics care. Rural hospitals also provide fewer mental health services. The result is Americans living in rural areas are more likely to die from the five leading causes of death than those living in urban areas: heart disease, …

With climate change a present reality, governments are confronting the need to adapt their regulatory planning processes to withstand new and uncertain climate risks. This Article provides three new resources to support this essential work. First, it develops a new standard for assessing the quality of climate adaptation decisionmaking, focusing on defining the problem, quantifying adaptation benefits, and evaluating equitable distribution of risk. Second, it reviews California's climate adaptation policy development efforts between 1988 and 2018-from the state's early efforts to study the problem, to later attempts at statewide strategic planning, until more recent work to integrate adaptation into existing …

Immigration enforcement along the Southwest border between the United States and Mexico has long channeled immigrants into perilous desert corridors, where many thousands have dies, out of the public view. In response to this humanitarian crisis, activists from organizations such as No More Deaths (NMD) trek deep into the treacherous desert, hoping to save lives, honor the remains of those who did not survive, and influence public opinion about border enforcement policies. NMD's activism is not merely utilitarian but also deeply expressive; ultimately, they hope to convey the message that all lives -- including those of unauthorized migrants-- are worth …

In early 2018, stories began circulating that something troubling was happening at the United States-Mexico border. The reports claimed that the United States government was separating migrant families and then holding children (as well as adults) by the thousands in crowded, possibly inhumane environments. There were alarming accounts of children who were sick, dirty, hungry, neglected, and sleeping on concrete floors.
Americans, of course, demanded answers: What was happening at these migrant detention centers? Why was it happening? What were the official policies involved? Were the government's actions appropriate? Were they legal? In other words, this was a textbook example …

What role should non-state actors have in the work of international organizations? It is particularly fitting that this panel is titled “between participation and capture,” because the phrase calls up the conflicting values that animate this question. When we think of non-state actors “participating” in the work of international organizations, we think about open, transparent organizations that are receiving the benefit of diverse perspectives and expertise. We may associate this phrase with process, access, and legitimacy in governance. On the other hand, when we think about non-state actors “capturing” the agenda of international organizations, we have a conflicting set of …

Peeking under the tent of our nation's largest and often most impactful cases reveals that judges often act like ringmasters: They delegate their authority to a wide array of magistrate judges, special masters, and settlement administrators. Some, like the American Bar Association, see this as a plus that promotes efficiency and cost savings. Critics, however, contend that delegating judicial power especially to private citizens, removes adjudication from public scrutiny, injects thorny ethical questions about ex parte communications, and risks cronyism and high costs. By constructing an original dataset of ninety-two multidistrict products liability proceedings centralized over fourteen years, we introduce …
