In late January 2020, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS CoV-2) was reported as an outbreak in Wuhan, China. Within 2 months it became a global pandemic. Patients with cancer are at highest risk for both contracting and suffering complications of its resultant disease, Coronavirus 19 (COVID-19). Healthcare systems across the world had to adapt quickly to mitigate this risk, while continuing to provide potentially lifesaving treatment to patients. Bringing care to the home through the use of telehealth, home based chemotherapy, and remote patient monitoring technologies can help minimize risk to the patient and healthcare workers without sacrificing quality …
Family Rejection And Unprotected Sex Inlatino Gay Men, Juan Alejandro De Llano Montano
Family Rejection And Unprotected Sex Inlatino Gay Men, Juan Alejandro De Llano Montano
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The present work explored the role of family rejection on the sexual behavior of Latino gay men under the guidance of the minority stress model. Family rejection was analyzed as a distal stressor, self-esteem as a proximal stressor, and unprotected sex as the outcome. The hypotheses were tested using regression, mediation, and multiple regression of secondary data from the Latino men who have sex with men (MSM) community involvement project. The results suggested that family rejection is a weak predictor of low self-esteem and engaging in receptive unprotected sex with more partners. Low self-esteem did not mediate the relationship between …

What’S Love Got To Do With Educational Leadership? A Case Study In Principal Practice, Dessynie Edwards, Israel Aguilar, Juan Manuel Nino
Organization and School Leadership Faculty Publications
The pressure to close the student achievement gap compounded by federal mandates and laws forces principals to hyper-focus on accountability as one of the major technical aspects of the profession; however, principals who can balance the technical (systems world) with the relational (lifeworld) and facilitate authentic care over aesthetic care, are warranted so that the achievement gap can be understood for what it really is, an opportunity gap. Thus, it’s important to document the processes, strategies, dispositions, or beliefs of school leaders who employ authentic care so that principal preparation programs can teach these as skill sets for preservice leaders …

Relationship Between Pm2.5 Levels And Cancer Incidences In Interior Alaska, Sandra G. Lewis
Relationship Between Pm2.5 Levels And Cancer Incidences In Interior Alaska, Sandra G. Lewis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Exposure to high levels of ambient air particulates < 2.5 microns in diameter (PM2.5) in the Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB) and the resulting impact on cancer incidence is the focus of this study. Climate, geography, and culture influence PM2.5 levels, particularly during the long cold season. While this study considers lung cancer incidences from PM2.5 exposure, the primary focus of the study is the incidences of all other types of cancers from exposure to PM2.5, because of the limited research done on this topic. This quantitative, retrospective, cohort study considered the incidences of new cancer diagnoses in the population during a 10-year period (January 1, 2008-December 31, 2017). The 2 FNSB Zip Codes, designated “hot spots,” frequently see spikes in PM2.5 during the long cold season. These areas are densely populated and contain the EPA-regulated air quality monitors. Cancer diagnoses in the hot spot Zip Codes were compared to cancer diagnoses in outlying Zip Codes (non-hot spots) that experience less PM2.5 and are more consistently within the EPA air quality guidelines. EPA monitors are not yet located in the non-hot spots. Cancer patient data were obtained from the Fairbanks Memorial Hospital Cancer Center. The results demonstrated that a strong association was found between PM2.5 exposure and non-lung cancers (OR = 1.37; RR = 1.36; p < 0.001); and between PM2.5 exposure and lung cancer (OR = 1.87; RR = 1.88; p < 0.001). These findings may be used to promote an increased awareness among FNSB residents of the potential impact on cancer diagnoses from inhaling high levels of PM2.5, so residents may change their behavior in favor of alternatives to biomass burning to improve air quality.
Effectiveness Of An Educational Intervention To Reduce Preanalytical Specimen Errors, Carol Ann Lineberry
Effectiveness Of An Educational Intervention To Reduce Preanalytical Specimen Errors, Carol Ann Lineberry
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
A rejected blood specimen can be very costly to a hospital as well as to the patient. Many errors occur in the preanalytical phase in which nurses and assistive personnel are often involved because they are usually not trained to do so. This staff education project was designed to decrease the number of laboratory rejections of blood specimens in a local hospital setting. Knowles’s adult learning theory was combined with the knowledge translation framework, proposed by Fredericks, Martorella, and Catallo, so that evidence-based changes in practice could occur more readily. There is a 20-minute in-service educational intervention followed by an …

Firearm Restriction And Its Impact In Reducing Violent Crimes In California, Sampson C. Onwuka
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There have been recurring incidents of gun violence, murder, and mass shootings that have raised public concern on the dangers of guns, and people have demanded government regulation on firearms usage. Studies have attributed these incidents to non-strict laws on guns; however, it was unclear whether firearm restrictions affected California's violent crime reduction. This quasi-experimental, quantitative study was focused on finding out the impact of gun violence restraining orders (GVROs) on violent crime reduction in California. Four research questions addressed the changes in the variables after the establishment of the GVRO. Secondary data from the California Department of Justice were …

Social Responsibility Perceptions Of Community Flood Resilience In Nigeria, Reginald Olisa Oranye
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Flooding is a severe threat to livelihoods and socioeconomic development in Ogbaru riverine communities of Anambra State, Nigeria. Limited success in the traditional approach of using predominantly structural measures, such as flood channels, to manage floods makes it imperative to explore nonstructural resilience initiatives that would potentially better protect vulnerable flood-prone communities. This study contributes to addressing the problems of ineffective flood management by developing vital social responsibility (SR) data and information that can enhance community flood resilience through individual and collective responsibilities for resilient action. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to explore SR perceptions of flood …

The Impact Of Public Consultation On Business Growth In The Virgin Islands, Arliene T. Penn
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Consistent public consultation in the making of policies and regulations is a problem in the Virgin Islands, affecting small businesses across the territory. Small business owners and the public have challenged the government to be more accountable and transparent in drafting and implementing legislation and regulations. The stakeholders are mainly concerned with those pieces of legislation and regulations that have a behavioral, social, or economic impact on their business, and, in turn, society. There is a lack of research on how the presence or absence of public input in the rulemaking process of business regulations impacts the economic growth and …
