Understanding And Targeting Glucose Transporter 3 In Glioblastoma, Catherine Jeanne Libby Jan 2020

Understanding And Targeting Glucose Transporter 3 In Glioblastoma, Catherine Jeanne Libby

All ETDs from UAB

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common adult primary malignant brain tumor with a median survival of about 15 months, even after aggressive treatment. Treatment of GBM is difficult for multiple reasons including the location of the tumor, tumor invasiveness, and the high degree of both inter-and intra-tumoral heterogeneity. Contributing to intratumoral heterogeneity are highly tumorigenic, stem-like tumor cells, with the capacity to self-renew and propagate the tumor, termed brain tumor initiating cells (BTICs). BTICs are also commonly therapy resistant, highly invasive, and metabolically plastic with elevated expression of glucose transporter 3 (GLUT3) allowing them to preferentially survive in low nutrient …

Analyzing Spinach Growth Using Vertical Garden Techniques And Local Water Sources For Urban Gardens, Julia Ashlyn Manzella

All ETDs from UAB

The University of Alabama at Birmingham undergraduate and graduate programs’ continued involvement in the Birmingham-Jefferson County community have identified food insecure areas, known as food deserts, and associated health issues negatively impacting the community due to poor diets and lack of access to healthy foods. Farm stands and community gardens around the Birmingham-metropolitan area have increased healthy food availability during the past several years to encourage healthier eating habits. To combat food insecurity, sustainable alternative growing techniques for urban agriculture need to be implemented and incorporated into local community gardens. Alternative gardening techniques such as vertical gardens maximize yield in …

Health Systems And Societal Level Community Benefit, Meghan Blueberry Mccarthy

All ETDs from UAB

In America, the amount spent on community benefit as tax exemption justification for not-for-profit health care is approaching 100 billion dollars annually. There are multiple categories for community benefit as defined by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The overwhelming majority of these funds are spent on individual financial assistance rather than societal level community health investments to address social determinates of health. Societal level community benefit is defined as the total spending on community health improvement, cash & in-kind donations to community groups and community building as reported on IRS form 990 Schedule H. These three combined itemized areas of …

Translating Public Health Strategies To Examine Hypertensive Disorders Of Pregnancy In Alabama, Matthew Dean Moore

All ETDs from UAB

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are on the rise in the United States and contribute significantly to maternal and infant morbidity and mortality. The impact of such disorders is especially burdensome for women insured by Medicaid, for those who live in the South, and for those representing racial and ethnic minorities. It is evident across the aims of this dissertation that HDP remains an important public health concern to stakeholders in Alabama, its diagnosis is influenced by various maternal characteristics, and it can result in disparate severe outcomes for some populations. The first aim examines systems level decision-making in the …

An Analysis Of Hospitalist Programs In Critical Access Hospitals, Robert Thomas Peterson Jan 2020

An Analysis Of Hospitalist Programs In Critical Access Hospitals, Robert Thomas Peterson

All ETDs from UAB

AN ANALYSIS OF HOSPITALIST PROGRAMS IN CRITICAL ACCESS HOSPITALS ROBERT T. PETERSON HEALTHCARE LEADERSHIP ABSTRACT Hospitalists are physicians specially trained in the care of hospitalized patients. In critical access hospitals (CAHs), the annual cost of a physician-based hospitalist program is approximately $1M. The high cost of hospitalist programs must be offset by the hospitalists’ ability to reduce the cost of inpatient care and/or by their ability to generate additional inpatient volume and revenue. Two well-established metrics are used to measure hospitalist performance: the average inpatient length of stay (ALOS) and the average daily census (ADC). Well-performing hospitalist programs are expected …

The Influence Of Maxillary Sinus Anatomy On Schneiderian Membrane Perforation During Lateral Wall Sinus Augmentation: A 5-Year Retrospective Study, Andrea Pizzini Jan 2020

The Influence Of Maxillary Sinus Anatomy On Schneiderian Membrane Perforation During Lateral Wall Sinus Augmentation: A 5-Year Retrospective Study, Andrea Pizzini

All ETDs from UAB

Although previous studies have attempted to identify risk factors for membrane perforation, limited information with conflicting data exists regarding the significance of the relationship between buccal wall thickness and membrane perforation. Access to the Schneiderian membrane during the sinus augmentation procedure is obtained through the buccal wall, thus the importance of understanding whether its thickness plays a role in membrane perforations. In addition, the anatomy of the sinus cavity plays an important role in rendering the sinus augmentation procedure straightforward or rather complex. It is theorized that the narrower the sinus cavity, the higher the risk of membrane perforation. Residual …

PIKOS UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA AT BIRMINGHAM, PERIODONTICS DEPARTMENT ABSTRACT The essentials of a smile involve the relationship between three primary components: the teeth, the lip framework, and the gingival scaffold. Excess of the gums while smiling is known as the gingival smile and this has been considered unaesthetic; however, the amount of gingival excess considered appealing differs in the literature. The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a difference in the perceptions of an ideally esthetic smile between dental …

Single Cell Proteins Affect Growth Performance And Body Composition Of Pacific White Shrimp Litopenaeus Vannamei, Yuan Yuan Jan 2020

Single Cell Proteins Affect Growth Performance And Body Composition Of Pacific White Shrimp Litopenaeus Vannamei, Yuan Yuan

All ETDs from UAB

The globally growing human population has increased the needs for protein based food. Single cell proteins (SCPs) as unconventional protein source, when coupled to aq-uaculture production, offer a means to ensure future protein needs can be met. To demon-strate a given type of SCP has potential as a protein source for use in aquaculture feed; a number of investigations are needed including demonstrating that the SCP is attractable and accepted by the animals, leads to equivalent survival, growth and nutritional compo-sition. This dissertation represents a series of investigations designed to evaluate the fea-sibility of using a bacterial based (MRD-Pro) and …

Copper Dependent Inhibitors Subvert Common Resistance Mechanisms In Staphylococcus Aureus And Inhibit Crucial Metabolic Pathways, Cameron Crawford Jan 2020

Copper Dependent Inhibitors Subvert Common Resistance Mechanisms In Staphylococcus Aureus And Inhibit Crucial Metabolic Pathways, Cameron Crawford

All ETDs from UAB

The effective antibiotic pool is shrinking with antibiotic resistance a constant problem that threatens to make our current therapies obsolete. To combat this, new drug screening methodologies are required since the traditional drug screens are offering limited results or only improvements upon current treatments. This work expands upon the idea that transition metal toxicity can be preferentially targeted towards bacteria. Specifically, the focus is on copper dependent inhibitors that quickly work to eliminate Staphylococcus aureus. S. aureus is a particularly threatening bacteria with high strain variability, a litany of survival and virulence factors, and multiple drug resistance mechanisms that are …

Religious/Spiritual And Secular Coping Among Individuals With Cystic Fibrosis And Their Caregivers, Christina Marie D'Angelo

All ETDs from UAB

Cystic fibrosis (CF) – a genetic, progressive disease affecting approximately 30,000 individuals in the United States – has been linked with psychological maladjustment and clinical difficulties among both affected individuals and their caregivers, specifically as the disease progresses and becomes more difficult to treat. Religious/spiritual and secular coping strategies, however, can offset many of the detrimental effects. Yet despite the salient effects that coping can have, aspects of coping among individuals with CF and their caregivers are still largely understudied and poorly understood. In general, less is known about religious/spiritual coping specifically including how it changes across the lifespan, how …

Movement Ability In High School Basketball Players: Pre- And Post-Season, Nikole J. Keil

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

Functional movement is the ability to perform movements (e.g., deep squat, push-ups, leg lunges) requiring balance, stabilization, and basic coordination without compensation or displaying left-to-right imbalances in muscle activity or flexibility (Cook, 2010). Competent functional movement allows for the proper development of motor control and optimal adaptability to training (Cook, 2010). Participation in structured youth sports is common in American culture, but how this participation effects functional movement ability long into adulthood is yet to be determined. The purpose of this study was to determine how functional movement ability, assessed by the Functional Movement Screen® (FMS), is impacted by participation …

Elementary Physical Education Field Day Manual, Erica Lipstraw Jan 2020

Elementary Physical Education Field Day Manual, Erica Lipstraw

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

Field day to my elementary students is referred to as the best day of the school year. This is the culture we have created in my school district from running successful field days in the past. The success of field day should be measured in the physical engagement and inclusion of all student participants. The responsibility of planning and running this event is usually given to the current physical education teacher. So, how and where does a physical education teacher begin to plan this school wide event? Is this something that a teacher learns through student teaching?

In my own …

That’S So Gay: Lgbtq+ Inclusivity And Education In Youth Sport Through Web Based Content, Caitlin Shortridge

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

LGBTQ+ youth, in sport and society, are more visible today than in years past. Athletes are coming out at earlier ages and need the support of those around them. Olympians, world champions, and elite athletes are acknowledging their identities and encouraging youth to be their authentic selves too. Though true, LGBTQ+ youth often do not feel safe in sport (Johnson et al., 2018). My goal of this project is to give youth athletes resources to better understand and include teammates who identify as LGBTQ+, making spaces safer and more inclusive for LGBTQ+ youth athletes. I created a website (https://cashort3.wixsite.com/masters2020) that …

Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE) are commonly used across health professions educational programs to evaluate student clinical competencies. OSCE are multiple, brief stations representing common practice scenarios. The purpose of the study was to evaluate student perceptions of OSCE. The researchers implemented 17 OSCE stations with 40 second year occupational therapy students to assess clinical competencies prior to fieldwork. Applying a qualitative descriptive methodologic approach, researchers analyzed station rating data, Qualtrics survey Likert-type items, and Qualtrics survey open-ended responses. Number of station rating responses varied widely, due to perceived time press. Station rating responses confirmed the more robust 80% response …

Do Beliefs About Knowledge Predict Occupational Therapy Students’ Critical Thinking? A Longitudinal Correlational Study, Anita W. Mitchell, Walter Stevens, Vikki G. Nolan Jan 2020

Do Beliefs About Knowledge Predict Occupational Therapy Students’ Critical Thinking? A Longitudinal Correlational Study, Anita W. Mitchell, Walter Stevens, Vikki G. Nolan

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

Beliefs about knowledge and knowing, or epistemic and ontological cognition (EOC), are potential influences on critical thinking, yet little research exploring these relationships has been published in educational literature or in occupational therapy (OT). This study examined the association between domain-general and OT-specific EOC and critical thinking in OT students. The Epistemological Beliefs Inventory, modified Four-Quadrant Scale, and Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal were administered to a convenience sample of 102 OT students, before and after the didactic portion of an OT program. Results of logistic regression indicated that only the general belief in an omniscient authority as a source of …

Standardized Patient Encounter: An Innovative Curricular Design To Enhance Fieldwork Readiness, Lisa M. Sakemiller, Susan Toth-Cohen

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

Occupational therapy (OT) educators are challenged to utilize instructional strategies that ensure student preparedness for Level II fieldwork. Standardized patient encounters (SPEs) offer students a low risk simulation opportunity to develop clinical skills and improve fieldwork readiness while enhancing OT students’ confidence. Yet, despite the benefits and perceived value of simulation among educators and students, SPEs are not used as frequently as other instructional methods. The purpose of this educational innovation paper is to describe the curriculum development process of an overall SPE experience embedded within a synthesis course that prepared students for Level II fieldwork and to evaluate the …
