Sex Workers And The Best Interests Of Their Children: Identifying Issues Faced By Sex Workers Involved In Custody And Access Legal Proceedings, Julie Eleanor Dewolf
Sex Workers And The Best Interests Of Their Children: Identifying Issues Faced By Sex Workers Involved In Custody And Access Legal Proceedings, Julie Eleanor Dewolf
LLM Theses
Sex worker parents often lose custody of their children. The purpose of this research was to determine what impact the status of a parent as a past or present sex worker has had on judicial decision-making in custody and access disputes. Through doctrinal legal research, I explored judicial treatment of sex worker parents in custody and access disputes in Ontario Child Protection and Family Law case law. Parental involvement in sex work was often presented as an unfavourable aspect of the parent, or otherwise had a negative influence on their claim. Sex work was treated as a negative quality in …

The Role Of "Commercial Morality" In Trade Secret Doctrine, Lynda J. Oswald
The Role Of "Commercial Morality" In Trade Secret Doctrine, Lynda J. Oswald
Notre Dame Law Review
The approaching anniversary of E.I. duPont deNemours & Co. v. Christopher is the impetus for this exploration and evaluation of the role of “commercial morality” in trade secret misappropriation doctrine. Christopher is the well-known industrial espionage case in which the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit held that flying an airplane over an under-construction manufacturing facility to take photos of briefly-but-inevitably exposed trade secrets was an “improper means” of accessing a trade secret and was contrary to standards of “commercial morality.”
Commercial morality has played a significant but shifting role in trade secret law over the past seven …

Gtpbp1 Resolves Paused Ribosomes To Maintain Neuronal Homeostasis., Markus Terrey, Scott I Adamson, Alana L Gibson, Tianda Deng, Ryuta Ishimura, Jeffrey Chuang, Susan L Ackerman
Faculty Research 2020
Ribosome-associated quality control pathways respond to defects in translational elongation to recycle arrested ribosomes and degrade aberrant polypeptides and mRNAs. Loss of a tRNA gene leads to ribosomal pausing that is resolved by the translational GTPase GTPBP2, and in its absence causes neuron death. Here, we show that loss of the homologous protein GTPBP1 during tRNA deficiency in the mouse brain also leads to codon-specific ribosome pausing and neurodegeneration, suggesting that these non-redundant GTPases function in the same pathway to mitigate ribosome pausing. As observed in

The Historical Origins Of Judicial Religious Exemptions, Stephanie H. Barclay
The Historical Origins Of Judicial Religious Exemptions, Stephanie H. Barclay
Notre Dame Law Review
The Supreme Court has recently expressed a renewed interest in the question of when the Free Exercise Clause requires exemptions from generally applicable laws. While scholars have vigorously debated what the historical evidence has to say about this question, the conventional wisdom holds that judicially created exemptions would have been a new or extraordinary means of protecting religious exercise—a sea change in the American approach to judicial review when compared to the English common law.
This Article, however, questions that assumption and looks at this question from a broader perspective. When one views judicial decisions through the lens of equitable …

Publications and Research
Background: Investigating variables associated with mental health literacy in the college-age population takes us one step closer to providing intervention for this vulnerable group, where growing rates of psychological disorders are a serious public concern. This study adds to the existing literature by incorporating, within a single model, multi-faceted variables (demographic, psychological, and academic) that contribute to mental health literacy in demographically and ethnically diverse college students.
Methods: Participants were undergraduate students enrolled at nine different colleges that are part of a large, urban, public university system. A total of 1213 respondents (62.0% female, 73.3% non-white) completed an in- person …

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
Serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) is a standard prognostic biomarker for stage IV melanoma patients. Often, LDH levels do not provide real-time information about the metastatic melanoma patients' disease status and treatment response. Therefore, there is a need to find reliable blood biomarkers for improved monitoring of metastatic melanoma patients who are undergoing checkpoint inhibitor immunotherapy (CII). The objective in this prospective pilot study was to discover circulating cell-free microRNA (cfmiR) signatures in the plasma that could assess melanoma patients' responses during CII. The cfmiRs were evaluated by the next-generation sequencing (NGS) HTG EdgeSeq microRNA (miR) Whole Transcriptome Assay (WTA; 2083 …

The American Law Of Overruling Necessity: The Exceptional Origins Of State Police Power, William J. Novak
Book Chapters
One of the most significant legal-constitutional moments in the history of the American republic occurred in the Confederation Congress on September 26 and 27, 1787. On those dates, the handiwork of the historic Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia was now "laid before the United States in Congress assembled." And the momentous question for the extant official lawmaking body of the US government was what to do next. Under Article 1 3 of the Articles of Confederation, any alteration of the articles had to be agreed to by Congress and confirmed by the legislatures of every state. Notably, the Philadelphia convention had …

Honors Program Theses and Research Projects
Schools across the United States and throughout the world administer tests to students to evaluate their academic performance. In many instances, however, especially in classrooms with higher populations of racial/ethnic minorities and low SES students, there are often missing scores, attributed to higher rates of absenteeism among these demographics (Callahan, 2019; Friedman-Krauss & Raver, 2015; Evans, 2004). When evaluating within subjects, longitudinal data, many will utilize a pre, post significance test such as a paired samples T test or a Repeated Measures ANOVA, however, due to the assumptions of these tests, missing data has posed a problem and requires data …

Ethoxylation And Polymerization Of Cardanol Derived Bifunctional Monomers, James Mgaya
Ethoxylation And Polymerization Of Cardanol Derived Bifunctional Monomers, James Mgaya
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
Cardanol and its derivative; 3-(non-8-enyl)phenol (obtained by ethenolysis reaction of cardanol) were ethoxylated via one-pot reaction with urea and ethylene glycol using Na2CO3/ZnO as co-catalysts. The ethoxylates were later methoxycarbonylated using a 1,2-bis(ditertbutylphosphinomethyl)benzene (DTBPMB) modified palladium catalyst to produce ethoxylated bifunctional monomers. Polymerization of these monomers by heating in the presence of a standard polymerization catalyst, Ti(OBu)4, formed oligomers that were plastic-like. Analysis of these oligomers by MALDI-TOF MS indicated the condensation of up to nine monomer units.
