Nobody can be fully prepared to a pandemic. Of course there are signs of it, the scientists can predict, alarming speeches can be made. But there are always alarmist people around, maybe that is why sometimes even the most serious warnings may be not considered by the authorities on time. The first patients may be lost without a proper diagnosis. When everybody realizes that there may be a big problem in the horizon, sometimes it is too late. That is why it is very important to monitor contagious diseases and follow the warnings and releases of national and international disease …

Familial Mediterranean Fever, From Pathogenesis To Treatment: A Contemporary Review, Abdurrahman Tufan, Helen Lachmann
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) (OMIM #249100) is the most common hereditary autoinflammatory disease in the world. FMF is caused by gain of function mutations of MEFV gene which encodes an immune regulatory protein, pyrin. Over the last few years, we have witnessed several new developments in the pathogenesis, genetic testing, diagnosis, comorbidities, disease related damage and treatment approaches to FMF. Elucidation of some of the pathogenic mechanisms has led to the discovery of pathways involved in inflammatory, metabolic, cardiovascular and degenerative diseases. The use of next generation sequencing in FMF has revealed many new gene variants whose clinical significance may …
Adjustable Bone Plate: State Of Art, Gazi̇ Huri̇
Adjustable Bone Plate: State Of Art, Gazi̇ Huri̇
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: The success of treatment of bone fracture and defects are based on a proper contact and compression between the bone fracture fragments. Intraoperative manipulations such as bone compression or distractions are generally done in order to achieve this. However, none of the bone plates currently in routine use allow these manipulations after fixation to the bone, requiring refixation and repeated drilling, and screwing operations. Based on this shortcoming, we designed a novel adjustable bone plate (ABP) system which allows bone shortening and lengthening even after fixation to the bone surface. The aim of the paper is to clarify the …

A Molecular Dynamics Study Of Temperature Dependent Wetting In Alkane-Water Systems, Pauf Neupane
Doctoral Dissertations
“The wetting behavior of aqueous organic systems is of great importance in several environmental and industrial processes such as the formation and growth of atmospheric aerosols, crude oil recovery from an oil field, onsite cleaning of natural gas, and clean-up of oil spills. In this work, we employed molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to explore the temperature dependent wetting behavior of octane and nonane on water in planar interfaces as well as in nanodroplets using PYS alkane and SPC/E and TIP4P/2005 water models.
For planar interfaces, we found unusual wetting behavior of octane and nonane on SPC/E water, but generally not …

Deep learning is increasingly applied to safety-critical application domains such as autonomous cars and medical devices. It is of significant importance to ensure their reliability and robustness. In this paper, we propose DLFuzz, the coverage guided differential adversarial testing framework to guide deep learing systems exposing incorrect behaviors. DLFuzz keeps minutely mutating the input to maximize the neuron coverage and the prediction difference between the original input and the mutated input, without manual labeling effort or cross-referencing oracles from other systems with the same functionality. We also design multiple novel strategies for neuron selection to improve the neuron coverage. The …

Spaceflight is considered the last frontier in terms of science, technology, and engineering. But it is also the next frontier in terms of human physiology and performance. After more than 200,000 years humans have evolved under earth’s gravity and atmospheric conditions, spaceflight poses environmental stresses for which human physiology is not adapted. Hypoxia, accelerations, and radiation are among such stressors, our research involves suborbital flights aiming to develop effective countermeasures in order to assure sustainable human space presence. The physiologic baseline of spaceflight participants is subject to great variability driven by age, gender, fitness, and metabolic reserve. The objective of …

While the country comes to terms with the inevitable impact that SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, will have on our lives and communities, public health authorities remain focused on breaking the chain of transmission. Managing the risk has resulted in widespread closures of businesses, schools, universities, resorts, and other facilities deemed “non-essential.” Practically speaking, this means closing buildings and ceasing operations. For building owners and operators, this poses a significant challenge to protect their assets and to ensure they are ready to reoccupy once the pandemic subsides.

Critical and essential workplaces operating during this pandemic need to implement procedures to reduce the risk of workers, contractors, vendors, customers, and members of the community becoming infected on their premises. Outside of healthcare and paramedical facilities, the infrastructure and standard practices of infection prevention and control have not been commonplace. Establishing enhanced routine cleaning and disinfection procedures in offices, factories, warehouses, call centers, grocery stores, and other non-healthcare workplaces is a critical step in reducing exposures and infections.

Algorithms For Inferring Multiple Microbial Networks, Sahar Tavakoli
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The interactions among the constituent members of a microbial community play a major role in determining the overall behavior of the community and the abundance levels of its members. These interactions can be modeled using a network whose nodes represent microbial taxa and edges represent pairwise interactions. A microbial network is a weighted graph that is constructed from a sample-taxa count matrix and can be used to model co-occurrences and/or interactions of the constituent members of a microbial community. The nodes in this graph represent microbial taxa and the edges represent pairwise associations amongst these taxa. A microbial network is …
The Relationship Of Cognitive Load And Different Participant Roles On Knowledge Retention In Simulation-Based Learning Among Undergraduate Nursing Students, Amanda Houston
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Background: High-fidelity simulation (HFS) is a cognitive load inducing educational tool that gives participants an opportunity to emulate clinical scenarios by assuming various roles. HFS offers opportunities for undergraduate nursing students to build fundamental knowledge that can replace, or enhance, clinical experiences. Cognitive load exists on a spectrum and negatively impacts learning when learners are at either extreme of the spectrum. Cognitive load is comprised of the three subcomponents of intrinsic, extraneous, and germane load. Not much is known about different subcomponents or their ability to prediction immediate knowledge and knowledge retention in students who play fundamentally different roles, as …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The goal of this thesis was to develop a process-based approach for a theatre production with an emphasis in musical theatre at the secondary education level. Many times, a high school theatre instructor is faced with challenges when selecting materials for productions that go beyond the standard mandated curriculum. In a perfect world, the program would have strong enrollment, overflowing funding and community support. This is usually not the case, so how does the director prioritize the necessary practice to find success for a production? What does the instructor do to select material that will be appropriate for the curriculum …

Nonlinear Optical Mechanisms In Semiconductors And Enhanced Nonlinearities At Epsilon-Near-Zero, Sepehr Ahmadzadeh Benis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Light does not interact with itself in linear optical materials. Such interactions occur only in non-linear optical (NLO) materials and typically require high intensity optical beams to be signifi-cant. The ever-increasing role of NLO, where intense light may change the properties of the me-dium, has created a pressing demand to invent materials for achieving more efficient light-light and light-matter interaction due to their potential capacity to augment and possibly replace cur-rent technologies with more efficient devices. There are numerous applications of NLO devices in fundamental science, technology, health, and defense such as all-optical computation and sig-nal processing, ultrashort laser technology, …

Epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is one of the important underlying molecular mechanisms for most types of cancers including bladder cancer. The precise underlying molecular mechanism in EMT-mediated bladder cancer progression is far from completed. LSD1, a histone lysine-specific demethylase, is known to promote cancer cell proliferation, metastasis, and chemoresistance. We found in this study that LSD1 is highly upregulated in bladder cancer specimens, especially those underwent chemotherapy, and the elevated levels of LSD1 are highly associated with bladder cancer grades, metastasis status, and prognosis. Inhibiting or knockdown LSD1 repressed not only EMT process but also cancer progression. Mechanistically, LSD1 complexes with …

Pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas (PPGLs) are rare neuroendocrine tumors originating from chromaffin cells in the adrenal medulla (PCCs) or extra-adrenal sympathetic or parasympathetic paraganglia (PGLs). About 40% of PPGLs result from germline mutations and therefore they are highly inheritable. Although dysfunction of any one of a panel of more than 20 genes can lead to PPGLs, mutations in genes involved in the VHL/HIF axis including
