Spontaneity And The Supernatural: Simulating Improv On Twine, Angelica Zadak

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

This thesis is an improv-based digital role-playing game (RPG) created on Twine titled Spontaneity and the Supernatural. The game synthesizes Dustin Edward’s scholarship on remix and digital rhetoric, Kathleen Blake Yancy and Stephen J. McElroy’s application of assemblage theory in composition, and Viola Spolin’s improv theory and practices to take improv from the stage to a digital space. This game uses Twine as a development tool to deliver improv concepts, such as Spolin’s ensemble, environment, and intuition, procedurally. To incorporate these elements into the game, the thesis engages potential players with a narrative that suggests all players can practice improv …

Interleukin-17a Facilitates Chikungunya Virus Infection By Inhibiting Ifn-Α2 Expression, Biswas Neupane, Dhiraj Acharya, Farzana Nazneen, Gabriel Gonzalez-Fernandez, Alex Sutton Flynt, Fengwei Bai

Faculty Publications

Interferons (IFNs) are the key components of innate immunity and are crucial for host defense against viral infections. Here, we report a novel role of interleukin-17A (IL-17A) in inhibiting IFN-α2 expression thus promoting chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infection. CHIKV infected IL-17A deficient (Il17a−/−) mice expressed a higher level of IFN-α2 and developed diminished viremia and milder footpad swelling in comparison to wild-type (WT) control mice, which was also recapitulated in IL-17A receptor-deficient (Il17ra−/−) mice. Interestingly, IL-17A selectively blocked IFN-α2 production during CHIKV, but not West Nile virus (WNV) or Zika virus (ZIKV), infections. Recombinant IL-17A …

An Agent-Based Simulator For The Gastrointestinal Pathway Of Listeria Monocytogenes, Ashrafur Rahman, Ali Asgary, Daniel Munther, Aamir Fazil, Ben A. Smith, Jianhong Wu

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We developed an agent-based gastric simulator for a human host to illustrate the within host survival mechanisms of Listeria monocytogenes. The simulator incorporates the gastric physiology and digestion processes that are critical for pathogen survival in the stomach. Mathematical formulations for the pH dynamics, stomach emptying time, and survival probability in the presence of gastric acid are integrated in the simulator to evaluate the portion of ingested bacteria that survives in the stomach and reaches the small intestine. The parameters are estimated using in vitro data relevant to the human stomach and L. monocytogenes. The simulator predicts that 5%–29% of …

Broadway: Adapting And Overcoming Post-Covid, Emily Feldman

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal (AELJ) Blog

On Wednesday, March 11, 2020, a Broadway usher tested positive for COVID-19. A day later, on March 12, 2020, one of New York’s most significant cultural institutions, and a symbol of the city itself, entered an indiscernibly long hiatus when The Broadway League, an organization representing Broadway theater owners and producers, announced that Broadway would be shutting down. What was initially meant to be a short break for Broadway’s 41 theatres quickly evolved to an extended one. Although the theatres intended to reopen in June 2020, this deadline was moved first to January 2021, and subsequently to May 2021. While …

Metachronous Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma In A Young Patient As The Only Presenting Symptom To Uncover Lynch Syndrome With Mlh1 Germline Mutation, Karam Khaddour, Ryan C Fields, Michael Ansstas, Ilana S Rosman, George Ansstas

Open Access Publications

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous malignancies are rare complications of Lynch syndrome and can include Muir-Torre and Turcot syndromes that are associated with sebaceous gland tumors and keratoacanthomas. The incidence and clinical course of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma have not been well documented in Lynch syndrome due to its rarity.

CASE PRESENTATION: A 49-year male presented with an enlarging groin skin lesion that was biopsed and demonstrated cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma for which he underwent a surgical resection. The patient experienced later a recurrence of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma around the resected margins. Next generation sequencing of tumor tissue revealed mutations in MSH6 …

Efficacy Of Phytochemicals In Inhibiting Horizontal Gene Transfer Of Antibiotic Resistance Between Multidrug Resistant Salmonella And Commensal E. Coli, Poonam Vinayamohan Nov 2020

Efficacy Of Phytochemicals In Inhibiting Horizontal Gene Transfer Of Antibiotic Resistance Between Multidrug Resistant Salmonella And Commensal E. Coli, Poonam Vinayamohan

Doctoral Dissertations

Bacterial antibiotic resistance (AR) imposes a huge threat to public health worldwide. Overuse and misuse of antibiotics in human medicine and animal agriculture resulted in the development of antibiotic resistant bacteria, including pathogens. Bacteria possess an inherent ability to share their genetic information by means of horizontal gene transfer (HGT), a property that favors dissemination of AR genes among neighboring bacteria. The animal gut, the reservoir of AR bacteria and AR genes, acts as a source for environmental contamination and propagation of AR through manure and water. There has been an increased incidence of AR Salmonella infections in humans in …
