Taxonomy Of Communication Noise Impacting The Quality Of Library Resources, Emmanuel Ifeduba, Benedette Ogoo Unuigboje Mrs Nov 2020

Taxonomy Of Communication Noise Impacting The Quality Of Library Resources, Emmanuel Ifeduba, Benedette Ogoo Unuigboje Mrs

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Frequently media reports draw attention to errors in published books and other publications. Sometimes the reports emanate from libraries and schools that bicker with suppliers of flawed publications. Notwithstanding much of the noise-related research in information science literature focus on noise within and around libraries and schools; and fail to explore the breadth and depth of this phenomenon described as communication noise. This study, therefore, aims to explore the breadth and depth of communication noise by identifying, describing and classifying the various types affecting information quality with a view to finding solutions to them. This is a taxonomical study of …

Design And Printing Of A Low-Cost 3d-Printed Nasal Osteotomy Training Model: Development And Feasibility Study., Michelle Ho, Jared Goldfarb, Roxana Moayer, Uche Nwagu, Rohan Ganti, Howard Krein, Ryan Heffelfinger, Morgan Leigh Hutchinson

Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Nasal osteotomy is a commonly performed procedure during rhinoplasty for both functional and cosmetic reasons. Teaching and learning this procedure proves difficult due to the reliance on nuanced tactile feedback. For surgical simulation, trainees are traditionally limited to cadaveric bones, which can be costly and difficult to obtain.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to design and print a low-cost midface model for nasal osteotomy simulation.

METHODS: A 3D reconstruction of the midface was modified using the free open-source design software Meshmixer (Autodesk Inc). The pyriform aperture was smoothed, and support rods were added to hold the fragments generated from the …

Sexually Dimorphic Oxytocin Receptor-Expressing Neurons In The Anteroventral Periventricular Nucleus Regulates Maternal Behavior, Kaustubh Sharma Nov 2020

Sexually Dimorphic Oxytocin Receptor-Expressing Neurons In The Anteroventral Periventricular Nucleus Regulates Maternal Behavior, Kaustubh Sharma

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The neurohypophysial hormone oxytocin is involved in the regulation of social behaviors, including social recognition, pair bonding, and sex-specific parental behaviors in a variety of species. Oxytocin triggers these social behaviors by binding to oxytocin receptors (OXTR) in various parts of the brain. Oxytocin-induced sex-typical behavior, therefore, suggests a sexual dimorphic distribution of OXTR in the brain. In recent years, the oxytocin system in the brain received tremendous attention as a potential pharmacological target for treatment of many psychiatric disorders, such as anxiety, autism spectrum disorders, and even sex-specific psychiatric disorder like postpartum depression (PPD). An important problem and a …

Computational Investigations Of Battery Electrolytes, Ke Li Nov 2020

Computational Investigations Of Battery Electrolytes, Ke Li

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation, the structure and dynamics of battery electrolytes were investigated using atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Battery electrolytes play a key role in transporting ions between the cathode and anode. The chemical stability and ionic conductivity of electrolytes influence battery performance. In order to design better electrolytes, one needs an understanding of the relationship between electrolyte structure, dynamics, and bulk properties. To bridge the gap between the macroscopic phenomenon and the hidden molecular physics, in the first project we focused on probing an ether-based electrolyte, chosen for its relevance in sodium-based batteries. Through studying the impact of concentration …

Empowering The Girl-Child Through Digital Media Literacy: The Role Of Academic Libraries, Opeyemi R. Oboh Mrs

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The girl child in times past has suffered marginalization due to the patriarchal sentiment that is pervasive in the society most especially in the developing countries. However, a ray of hope has shone on them as more voices of advocacy have risen to defend and project the value of a girl child towards societal development and the need to empower this class of gender for sustainable development. Technology is a great enabler for the empowerment of the girl-child, however, there are still traces of inadequate of opportunities, skills and the fear of discrimination which serve as stumbling block to the …

Bayesian And Frequentist Approaches Robustness In Variance Components Estimation, Hamdy F. F. Mahmoud Nov 2020

Bayesian And Frequentist Approaches Robustness In Variance Components Estimation, Hamdy F. F. Mahmoud

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

Variance components and functions thereof are important in many fields such as industry, agriculture, quantitative genetics and animal breeding. This paper contributes to evaluating the variance components estimation approaches and assessing their robustness to outliers. Using an intensive simulation study and under different settings, it was found that researchers can decide which method of estimation is appropriate to their study to estimate the variance components based on the source of outliers (error term, εi j or random effects, αi), the variance components ratio, and the sample size.

Model Suitability Analysis Of Survival Time To Ovarian Cancer Patients Data, Manoj Kumar, Sandeep K. Maurya, Sanjay K. Singh, Umesh Singh, Anurag Pathak Nov 2020

Model Suitability Analysis Of Survival Time To Ovarian Cancer Patients Data, Manoj Kumar, Sandeep K. Maurya, Sanjay K. Singh, Umesh Singh, Anurag Pathak

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

In this paper, we propose a suitable statistical model for survival time of the ovarian cancer patients data. The proposition followed by checking the suitability of twelve lifetime models through different statistical tools like the value of logarithmic of likelihood, Akaike Information Criterion, Kolmogorov-Smirnov distance and Bayesian Information Criterion. The maximum likelihood estimate of the parameters for the considered models has been obtained. Also, the non-parametric procedure has been used to show the validity of the conclusion.

Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Faculty Publications

Purpose: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a debilitating neurodevelopmental disorder with high heterogeneity and no clear common cause. Several drugs, in particular risperidone and aripiprazole, are used to treat comorbid challenging behaviors in children with ASD. Treatment with risperidone and aripiprazole is currently recommended by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the USA for children aged 5 and 6 years and older, respectively. Here, we investigated the use of these medications in younger patients aged 4 years and older.

Patients and Methods: This retrospective case series included 18 children (mean age, 5.7 years) with ASD treated at the Kids …

A Probability Model For The Number Of Female Child Births, Anup Kumar Nov 2020

A Probability Model For The Number Of Female Child Births, Anup Kumar

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

We analysed the phenomenon of ‘son preference’ that is prevalent in the Indian society, through a probability model for the number of female childbirths among females of Indian society. In [1], a probability model for the number of female childbirths was applied to an observed set of data taken from NFHS-III (2005-06) for the seven North-East states of India. Some problem regarding the application of the model to the data set is found and the proper solution is suggested. The modified approach is illustrated to observed data set taken from NFHS-III(2005-06) for few states of India of different regions.
