Cost-Benefit Analysis Of Constructing And Operating A Streetcar System In Buffalo, Ny, Daniel Kevin Zielinski
Cost-Benefit Analysis Of Constructing And Operating A Streetcar System In Buffalo, Ny, Daniel Kevin Zielinski
Applied Economics Theses
In about 30 of the largest 300 US metro areas, fixed-rail electric streetcars have been reintroduced or refurbished after 75 years of policy favoring petroleum-powered buses. Unlike buses, new streetcar systems are designed to enhance or regenerate economic activity along their routes in urban centers that lack the population density to support subway systems. This paper assesses the criteria utilized by the US Department of Transportation in its decision-making process for supporting streetcar projects. Using multi-factor cost-benefit analysis, a model of a potential streetcar reintroduction for Buffalo, New York is presented.

Improving Emergency Airway Care At A Critical Access Hospital, Kelly Mitchell
Improving Emergency Airway Care At A Critical Access Hospital, Kelly Mitchell
Student Projects for Graduate Degrees
Emergency airway care is of the highest priority in caring for patients arriving at the emergency department with critical injuries and conditions. Intubation via laryngoscopy is the gold standard for placing an endotracheal tube to manage ventilation. In rural areas, emergency airway care is often the responsibility of non-expert providers who rarely have the opportunity to perform this life-saving procedure. These less experienced providers often take a longer time and make more attempts at endotracheal intubation. Multiple attempts and increased time taken to secure an airway are associated with higher morbidity and mortality. A critical review of the literature supports …

Today, the dairy industry is comprised of cows that can produce around 20,000 pounds of milk in a year, yet producers often see only 30% to 50% of animals produce a live calf after each breeding. While many factors may be at play, there is evidence that the immune system plays a large role in regulating pregnancy and in preventing immune mediated abortions. Maternal immune system changes during pregnancy have been shown to occur both locally in the uterus, which is in direct contact with the placenta, and systemically in the blood. Research in humans and mice has shown that …

An operation room is a critical environment when it comes to the safety of patients undergoing surgery. There are a lot of factors that go into reducing Surgical Site Infections (SSI) following a surgery. This comes in the form of cleaning standards, surgical practices, but also environment controls. The characteristics of airflow within an operation room are related to the risk of an SSI. Some of these factors are temperature, velocity, and turbulent air around an open wound which could increase the chance of bacteria or other particles entering the very vulnerable patient. As clean room standards continue to be …

A skill gap in Problem Solving in Technology-Rich Environments (PS-TRE) between U.S. Baby Boomers and younger generations has been documented in previous studies using the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) Survey of Adult Skills (Rampey et al., 2016). Bringing this generation of workers up to speed in this competency area is important because older workers are a growing segment of the U.S. workforce with 13 million employees expected to be age 65 or older by 2024 (Toossi & Torpey, 2017). Workplace learning may be a solution, but few studies in adult learning document outcomes of training …
Dietary Regulation Of Successful Aging, Aubree L. Hawley
Dietary Regulation Of Successful Aging, Aubree L. Hawley
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The current growth of the older population is unprecedented in U.S. history. Chronic disease and functional limitation commonly develop prior to old age, leading to prolonged physical disability and decreased well-being. The development of chronic disease and loss of independence is associated with lean body mass (LBM) loss and fat mass gain beginning in middle age. Therefore, it is important to identify modifiable factors to mitigate deleterious shifts in body composition to promote successful aging (SA). The concept of SA is associated with longevity, the absence of disease and disability, and subjective components of well-being, however, an operational definition has …

Effects Of Alcohol Intoxication On Hostile Attribution Bias And Relational Aggression In Women, Alita M. Mobley
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Alcohol intoxication is consistently linked to physical and sexual aggression in men, but not women. The lack of evidence supporting the relationship between alcohol and aggression for women could be due to a failure to measure relational aggression (i.e., harmful social manipulation), the form of aggression more commonly employed by women. Further, alcohol intoxication may interfere with the interpretation of social cues, resulting in greater perceived provocation in ambiguous social interactions and increased aggression. The current study examined the relationship between alcohol intoxication and relational aggression in women and the extent to which interpretation of social cues (i.e., hostile attribution …

Development Of An Effect Size To Classify The Magnitude Of Dif In Dichotomous And Polytomous Items, James D. Weese
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A standardized effect size for the SIBTEST/POLYSIBTEST procedure is proposed, allowing for Differential Item Functioning (DIF) to be classified with a single set of DIF heuristics regardless of whether data are dichotomous or polytomous. This proposed standardized effect size accounts for both variability in responses and whether participants are included in the SIBTEST/POLYSIBTEST calculations. First, a new set of unstandardized effect size heuristics are established for dichotomous data that are more aligned with Educational Testing Service (ETS) standards using two and three parameter logistic (2PL and 3PL) models. Second, a standardized effect size is proposed and compared to other DIF …
