Discovering Our Field In Our Stories, Howard Gadlin, Nancy A. Welsh Dec 2020

Discovering Our Field In Our Stories, Howard Gadlin, Nancy A. Welsh

Faculty Scholarship

It’s the people who make a field.

This book draws on the thought-provoking, diverse, delightful, sometimes painful, and ultimately beautiful personal histories of some of the thinkers, inventors, influencers, reformers, disrupters, and transformers who have created—and continue to create—the field of conflict resolution. The authors of the essays in this book play a variety of roles: mediator, facilitator, arbitrator, ombuds, academic, system designer, entrepreneur, leader of public or private conflict resolution organization, researcher, advocate for conflict resolution, critic of conflict resolution. They represent the various waves of people who have populated our field, the founders, the institutionalizers, and the leaders …

Walling Out: Rules And Standards In The Beach Access Context, Timothy M. Mulvaney Dec 2020

Walling Out: Rules And Standards In The Beach Access Context, Timothy M. Mulvaney

Faculty Scholarship

The overwhelming majority of U.S. states facially allocate exclusionary rights and access privileges to beaches by categorically deciding whom to wall in and whom to wall out. In the conventional terms of the longstanding debate surrounding the design of legal directives, such “rules” are considered substantively determinant ex ante and, in application, analogically transparent across similarly situated cases. Only a small number of jurisdictions have adopted “standards” in the beach access context, which—again, on the conventional account—sacrifice both determinacy and transparency for the ability to accommodate ex post the complexities of individual cases. This Article contends that beach access policy …

Symmetry’S Mandate: Constraining The Politicization Of American Administrative Law, Daniel E. Walters Dec 2020

Symmetry’S Mandate: Constraining The Politicization Of American Administrative Law, Daniel E. Walters

Faculty Scholarship

Recent years have seen the rise of pointed and influential critiques of deference doctrines in administrative law. What many of these critiques have in common is a view that judges, not agencies, should resolve interpretive disputes over the meaning of statutes—disputes the critics take to be purely legal and almost always resolvable using lawyerly tools of statutory construction. In this Article, I take these critiques, and the relatively formalist assumptions behind them, seriously and show that the critics have not acknowledged or advocated the full reform vision implied by their theoretical premises. Specifically, critics have extended their critique of judicial …

Lightning-Fast And Privacy-Preserving Outsourced Computation In The Cloud, Ximeng Liu, Robert H. Deng, Pengfei Wu, Yang Yang Dec 2020

Lightning-Fast And Privacy-Preserving Outsourced Computation In The Cloud, Ximeng Liu, Robert H. Deng, Pengfei Wu, Yang Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we propose a framework for lightning-fast privacy-preserving outsourced computation framework in the cloud, which we refer to as LightCom. Using LightCom, a user can securely achieve the outsource data storage and fast, secure data processing in a single cloud server different from the existing multi-server outsourced computation model. Specifically, we first present a general secure computation framework for LightCom under the cloud server equipped with multiple Trusted Processing Units (TPUs), which face the side-channel attack. Under the LightCom, we design two specified fast processing toolkits, which allow the user to achieve the commonly-used secure integer computation and …

Jointly Optimizing Sensing Pipelines For Multimodal Mixed Reality Interaction, Ramesh Darshana Rathnayake Kanatta Gamage, Ashen De Silva, Dasun Puwakdandawa, Lakmal Meegahapola, Archan Misra, Indika Perera Dec 2020

Jointly Optimizing Sensing Pipelines For Multimodal Mixed Reality Interaction, Ramesh Darshana Rathnayake Kanatta Gamage, Ashen De Silva, Dasun Puwakdandawa, Lakmal Meegahapola, Archan Misra, Indika Perera

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Natural human interactions for Mixed Reality Applications are overwhelmingly multimodal: humans communicate intent and instructions via a combination of visual, aural and gestural cues. However, supporting low-latency and accurate comprehension of such multimodal instructions (MMI), on resource-constrained wearable devices, remains an open challenge, especially as the state-of-the-art comprehension techniques for each individual modality increasingly utilize complex Deep Neural Network models. We demonstrate the possibility of overcoming the core limitation of latency–vs.–accuracy tradeoff by exploiting cross-modal dependencies–i.e., by compensating for the inferior performance of one model with an increased accuracy of more complex model of a different modality. We present a …

Chinese Gardens: Solutions For Urban Nature Deficit, Zachary K. Warner Dec 2020

Chinese Gardens: Solutions For Urban Nature Deficit, Zachary K. Warner

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Research shows that time spent in nature is good for human health and well-being. However, as the world’s population becomes more concentrated in urban areas regular time in nature, especially extended time, is becoming more difficult to have. On the other hand, Chinese gardens can provide one solution to this problem because they have a unique way of providing a naturalistic space within a small area. Despite this fact, there aren’t many Chinese style gardens outside of China. Therefore, the objective of this thesis was to identify possible barriers to using Chinese garden design principles and construction techniques, then address …

Feigned Consensus: Usurping The Law In Shaken Baby Syndrome/Abusive Head Trauma Prosecutions, Keith A. Findley, D. Michael Risinger, Patrick D. Barnes, Julie A. Mack, David A. Moran, Barry C. Scheck, Thomas L. Bohan

Articles

Few medico-legal matters have generated as much controversy--both in the medical literature and in the courtroom--as Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS), now known more broadly as Abusive Head Trauma (AHT). The controversies are of enormous significance in the law because child abuse pediatricians claim, on the basis of a few non-specific medical findings supported by a weak and methodologically flawed research base, to be able to “diagnose” child abuse, and thereby to provide all of the evidence necessary to satisfy all of the legal elements for criminal prosecution (or removal of children from their parents). It is a matter, therefore, in …

Nurses' Attitudes Toward Physician-Assisted Suicide, Cheyenne Star Lowrey-Lagrone Dec 2020

Nurses' Attitudes Toward Physician-Assisted Suicide, Cheyenne Star Lowrey-Lagrone

The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses

Physician-assisted suicide, or PAS, is end-of-life option in which patients self-administer physician-prescribed lethal medication to end their life. Nurses' own interpretations and understandings of the legalities, ethical dilemmas, and factors that influence their attitudes can be analyzed to determine the nurses’ role in the support or opposition of the practice. Although nurses do not have an active role in PAS, they play a pivotal role in patient advocacy and education. This paper analyzes the factors that contribute to nurses’ attitudes toward the practice, along with the benefits of education of this topic going forth.

Stuck In The Middle: An Illustrated Essay On Covid-19 And Other Past Pandemics, Amanda Pszczolkowski

Honors Projects

The project is a visual essay, in a graphic novel-esque style, exploring how the coronavirus compares to other illness outbreaks of the past century and how the associated restrictions have impacted me at an individual level. The creative nonfiction essay intertwines historical perspectives as a way to inform, contextualize, and reflect my own experience with COVID-19. The project began with extensive research on illness outbreaks of the past century, current developments in the Coronavirus pandemic, and genre conventions of graphic novels and memoirs. The intent was to provide a cohesive whole that illuminates themes in the linguistic essay.

Advance Care Planning Barriers For Young Adults, Emily K. Songer Dec 2020

Advance Care Planning Barriers For Young Adults, Emily K. Songer

Honors Projects

According to the CDC, 40.6% of young adult deaths occur from unintentional injuries, which is the leading cause of death for this age group (Heron, 2019). When accidents occur, they sometimes result in a loss of the ability to make medical decisions, and young adults most likely have never had the opportunity state their wishes regarding their medical care. This is why advance care planning is important, because it allows the opportunity to express those desires before it is too late. Many people often confuse advance care planning as a process that is only needed for the elderly and those …

Analysis Of Racial/Ethnic Disparities And Language Barriers In Radiation Therapy, Carrie Warner Dec 2020

Analysis Of Racial/Ethnic Disparities And Language Barriers In Radiation Therapy, Carrie Warner

Honors Projects

It is important for every patient within healthcare to have access to and receive quality care no matter their race, ethnicity, and/or primary language. Focusing on cancer care in the United States, there are racial and ethnic disparities as well as language barriers, both within the English language itself and with foreign languages, that prevent patients from receiving high quality care. This meta-analysis provides evidence of current disparities within healthcare that can be applied to the radiation oncology department and reveals suggestions for advancements including the use of language-concordant physicians and medical interpreters. Some of the policies, plans, and resources …

Resource Allocation In Healthcare, Sydney Sprau Dec 2020

Resource Allocation In Healthcare, Sydney Sprau

Honors Projects

The overall purpose of this research was to find ways that resources are allocated throughout the healthcare system. Resources are not always what we think of when it comes to healthcare. While it does include personal protective equipment, ventilators, and beds, it also includes the personnel that are required to deliver the care essential to survival. It is well known that many ethical issues revolve around the allocation of such resources in healthcare, but it is unknown what the best solution to sharing these resources is during pandemics such as COVID-19.

An Exploratory On Partial Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return (Papvr), Gabriella Pitingaro Dec 2020

An Exploratory On Partial Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return (Papvr), Gabriella Pitingaro

Honors Projects

This exploratory gives insight into Partial Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return (PAPVR). The paper goes into depth explaining more detail about the congenital heart defect, the embryology surrounding it, and how much is still left to be discovered. With PAPVR's rarity (0.4-0.7% of the population), not much is known. Hypocritically, since PAPVR often goes undetected, our numbers for cases are estimated to be an underestimated value. The paper also goes into a specific case study regarding the celebrity Amy Grant and her experience with PAPVR and how it has affected her life and career.

Review: Influence Of Meteorological Conditions And Algal Community Composition On Hypolimnetic Hypoxia, Ian P. Stone Dec 2020

Review: Influence Of Meteorological Conditions And Algal Community Composition On Hypolimnetic Hypoxia, Ian P. Stone

Honors Projects

Hypoxia has been a central focus of research regarding water quality impairments throughout the world in the past century. The fresh and coastal marine waters affected by hypoxia are of great importance due to the ecosystem services and species habitat they provide, and because of the regional economic activity spurned by these waters in return. As such, a great deal of research effort has been devoted to elucidating the causes and ecological effects of hypoxia with the hopes of remediating the issue. The bulk of this effort has been directed at the role of anthropogenic allochthonous nutrient loading and algal …

Neural Correlates Of Social Pain In Psychological Disorders: Implications For Educational Settings, Skye E. Johnson Dec 2020

Neural Correlates Of Social Pain In Psychological Disorders: Implications For Educational Settings, Skye E. Johnson

Honors Projects

Pain has long been defined as a multidimensional construct; in past research, not only have the physical and sensory aspects of pain been investigated, but also the cognitive and emotional aspects, which include the experience of social pain. This experience is generally accepted to be very distressing and can have adverse effects on one's mental health, especially for those with neurological disorders. In my paper, I examine the effects of social pain on brain activity in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) as compared to those who are neurotypical. This research finds that while neurotypical …

Analysis Of Seasonal Changes In Thermal Stress Resilience And Innate Immunity In The Temperate Coral, Astrangia Poculata, From Future Climate Impacts, Tyler Eugene Harman

Masters Theses

Over the years, global warming has had a devastating effect on coral reef ecosystems. Anthropogenic influences have caused significant increases in greenhouse gases, with a subsequent increase in solar radiation held within Earth’s atmosphere leading to increasing global temperatures. The increasing temperatures from concurrent increases in greenhouse gases impact fragile marine ecosystems such as coral reefs, which require particular environmental parameters such as temperature in order to survive and maintain a diverse ecosystem in which many marine species rely on. These increases in temperature exacerbate phenomena such as bleaching events and coral disease, drastically impacting coral on a global scale …

Resisting Hyper-Partisan Silencing: Arendt On Political Persuasion Through Exemplification And Truth-Telling As Action, Andrew D. Spear Dec 2020

Resisting Hyper-Partisan Silencing: Arendt On Political Persuasion Through Exemplification And Truth-Telling As Action, Andrew D. Spear

Articles, Book Chapters, Essays

A central frustration of recent political discourse is the consistent reduction of politically relevant factual and critical speech to mere expression of partisan commitment. Partisans of “the other side”—members of the other tribe—are viewed as de facto wrong, because partisans, even when their speech invokes mere facts or purportedly shared political principles. Ideally, democratic political discourse operates along at least two central dimensions: a dimension of shared factual, historical, and political assumptions, and a more contested dimension of interpretation, prioritization, and evaluation that results in diverse and often competing understandings of what is good, and so of what is best …

P450 Cyp17a1 Variant With A Disordered Proton Shuttle Assembly Retains Peroxo-Mediated Lyase Efficiency, Yilin Liu, Ilia G. Denisov, Yelena V. Grinkova, Stephen G. Silgar, James R. Kincaid

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Human cytochrome P450 CYP17A1 first catalyzes hydroxylation at the C17 position of either pregnenolone (PREG) or progesterone (PROG), and a subsequent C17−C20 bond scission to produce dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) or androstenedione (AD). In the T306A mutant, replacement of the Threonine 306 alcohol functionality, essential for efficient proton delivery in the hydroxylase reaction, has only a small effect on the lyase activity. In this work, resonance Raman spectroscopy is employed to provide crucial structural insight, confirming that this mutant, with its disordered proton shuttle, fails to generate essential hydroxylase pathway intermediates, accounting for the loss in hydroxylase efficiency. Significantly, …

A Study Of The Purple Star School Designation Program: Summary Report, Center For Public Research And Leadership, Military Child Education Coalition (Mcec)

Center for Public Research and Leadership

Military-connected (MC) families are tough and agile. Moving three times more often, on average, than their civilian counterparts, parents and students quickly learn to become fierce advocates for themselves, lobbying schools to provide the basic educational services and social-emotional supports to which all American children are entitled. But this advocacy becomes exhausting and draws time away from the other pressing demands of relocation and family life. What relief might parents feel if they did not have to constantly put on their armor to fight these battles? And what more could students accomplish if they did not have to settle for …
