Physiological And Predicted Metagenomic Analysis Of Soil Aggregate Microbial Communities Under Different Tillage Regimes, Lukas Bernhardt Dec 2020

Physiological And Predicted Metagenomic Analysis Of Soil Aggregate Microbial Communities Under Different Tillage Regimes, Lukas Bernhardt

Master's Theses and Capstones

Soils are spatially heterogeneous environments, and the distribution of microorganisms and carbon is organized at the scale of millimeters in soil aggregates. The physio-chemical environment within macroaggregates and microaggregates differ, which may lead to the selection of microbial communities with different survival and growth strategies- here termed life history strategies. Using an aggregate scale survey of microbial communities in agricultural soils, I show that soil aggregates harbor distinct communities with life history characteristics that align with the Yield, Acquisition, Stress tolerator framework (Y-A-S). Soils collected from an eight- year tillage experiment were isolated into four aggregate size classes and physiological …

Atherosclerosis: Pathology, Role Of Sd-Ldl, Particle Size Characterization Of Sd-Ldl With Multiangle Light Scattering, Akshay Sudhakar Ukey

Masters Theses

Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease due to the accumulation of lipids in the inner wall of arteries. As per the report of Center of Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC), 1 in every 4 deaths is due to heart diseases each year. Atherosclerosis occurs when artery walls harden by the buildup of cholesterol, forming multiple atherosclerotic plaques within the aorta (4). Out of the modern medicines available to control cholesterol, statin is amongst the foremost widely used because it is both safe and effective in lowering high risk patients (9). However, usage of high statins dosage typically leads to some mild …

Target Treatment With Stereotactic Radiation For Recurrent Gliomas, Ayesha Ali, Victor E. Chen, Claire Zurlo, James M Taylor, Christian Fernandez, Wenyin Shi

Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers

High grade gliomas (HGG) have a propensity to recur locally and have poor outcomes. As such, safe and effective treatment is paramount. Target treatment with stereotactic radiation allows safe re-irradiation through minimizing normal brain tissue radiation due to its high precision. In this review, we evaluated the clinical experiences using SRS and FSRT for re-irradiation in HGG. We report the radiobiological advantages and disadvantages of both modalities as well as the safety and efficacy published in current literature.

"Through A Forest Wilderness:” Native American Environmental Management At Yosemite And Contested Conservation Values In America’S National Parks, Rochelle Bloom, Douglas Deur

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Chapter 9. The philosophies and views of nature prevalent in the 19th century West shaped the early National Park Service, and continue to influence park policy today. Park-builders incorrectly viewed early parks as untouched “wilderness,” even as Native peoples continued to occupy, revere, and actively manage lands and resources on these lands. This misapprehension fostered the creation and enforcement of park regulations meant to protect wild spaces, resulting in the displacement of both Native peoples and the culturally significant habitats that they had helped sustain for millennia. Among these regulations, federally imposed restrictions on burning and other traditional plant community …

Struggling Student Teachers: Interventions For Support And Success, Sheree Moser

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research

Teacher shortages in K-12 schools have created unique challenges for teacher preparation programs. University instructors face the task requirements of supporting candidates from a wide variety of backgrounds at the undergraduate and graduate level. While some of these candidates enter higher education programs skilled, eager, and committed, others are less prepared, requiring significant attention to make it through the program. Exams required by state departments of education and minimum grade point averages influence each candidate’s ability to move forward within the program, causing some students to experience additional struggles related to mental health and financial burdens.

The problem of practice …

Packet Delivery: An Investigation Of Educational Video Games For Computer Science Education, Robert Lafferty

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The field of educational video games has rapidly grown since the 1970s, mostly producing video games to teach core education concepts such as mathematics, natural science, and English. Recently, various research groups have developed educational games to address elective topics such as finance and health. Educational video games often target grade school audiences and rarely target high school students, college students, or adults. Computer science topics are not a common theme among educational video games; the games that address Computer Science topics teach computer fundamentals, such as typing or basic programming, to young audiences.

Packet Delivery, an educational video …

Dc-Dc Buck-Boost Converter Design For Energy Harvesting From Exercise Equipment, Nicholas Serres Dec 2020

Dc-Dc Buck-Boost Converter Design For Energy Harvesting From Exercise Equipment, Nicholas Serres

Electrical Engineering

This project aims to improve energy harvesting efficiency from an exercise machine. Exercise machine energy harvesting has a small immediate impact but can eventually have an immense impact. An elliptical exercise machine energy converter outputs 5V-60V whereas the microinverters require approximately 36V. The buck boost DC-DC converter bridges the gap between the microinverter and the elliptical machine. Increasing the buck-boost controller efficiency increases power production. Greater power efficiency gives the whole system more financial viability, and additionally makes it a greater sustainable energy source.

Immunohistochemical Characterization Of A Novel Population Of Reticular Thalamic Neurons Expressing Cholecystokinin And Type 1 Cannabinoid Receptors, Shayna Mallat Dec 2020

Immunohistochemical Characterization Of A Novel Population Of Reticular Thalamic Neurons Expressing Cholecystokinin And Type 1 Cannabinoid Receptors, Shayna Mallat

Master's Theses and Capstones

The thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN) filters somatosensory stimuli by providing inhibition to the excitatory thalamic relay nuclei, which then communicate with the cortex to appropriately integrate and respond to sensory stimuli. The TRN is also responsible for generating and maintaining sleep spindles, which are important for memory and cognition, and are disrupted in various psychiatric disorders. Previous studies have shown that the TRN is comprised of several neuronal subpopulations that carry out specific functions. These neurons can be distinguished using peptide markers such as parvalbumin (PV), somatostatin (SST), and calbindin (CB). In this thesis, I identified a novel neuronal population …

Beyond The Nuclear Family: A Qualitative Examination Of Extended Family Involvement Among American Indian Families, Ashleigh Coser, Maureen Sullivan, Hannah Espeleta

Journal of Family Strengths

A common practice among American Indian (AI) families, as well as many ethnic minority families, is involving both nuclear and extended family members in raising children. This practice is believed to serve as a protective factor for families against negative outcomes and provide a potential avenue for social support. Several authors have described extended family members being involved in helping to care taking, sharing cultural knowledge and customs, and disciplining youth. As a result, it has been proposed that extended family members help to nurture the parent-child relationship and provide various forms of support to parents. Despite this, the available …

Sonograms And Speech: Informed Consent, Professional Speech, And Physicians' First Amendment Rights, Oliana Luke Dec 2020

Sonograms And Speech: Informed Consent, Professional Speech, And Physicians' First Amendment Rights, Oliana Luke

Washington Law Review

Abortion is an extremely divisive topic that has caused waves of litigation. The right to access abortion has traditionally been challenged based on due process, equal protection, and privacy grounds. However, in a more recent string of cases, physicians have been challenging laws that require the physician to narrate an ultrasound before an abortion as an abridgment of their First Amendment rights. These cases require courts to balance the government’s ability to reasonably regulate a physician through professional licensing with the physician’s First Amendment protections against government-compelled speech. This Comment argues that, to balance these ideals and survive First Amendment …

Life as we now know it has drastically changed since March 2020. Over 60 million people throughout the world have been infected with COVID-19. Unfortunately, over a million have died from the virus in a short period of time. The last pandemic occurred in 1918, many years before most of us were born. Since the pandemic is a health crisis most generations have never experienced, adults and children alike are learning to cope simultaneously. It is difficult to teach children coping mechanisms during these chaotic and unfamiliar times. Family members can’t set positive examples if their coping techniques are inconsistent. …

First Amendment: Executive Order By The Governor Limiting Large Gatherings Statewide, Alex N. Estroff, Boris W. Gautier

Georgia State University Law Review

Beginning in March 2020, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp (R) issued a series of Executive Orders addressing the State’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Included in these Orders was a prohibition on large groups of people gathering in a single location. Though an effective means of curtailing the virus’s rapid transmission, this specific provision became a source of controversy for groups who believed such a prohibition infringed upon their First Amendment rights.
