Initiatives in DePaul's College of Computing and Digital Media are addressing racial inequity in health care. One initiative is looking at Black maternal health. Another is trying to build models and requirements of what should be automated to consider racial inequity first.

In The Loop
Amid the bleakness of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Illinois PPE Network is an inspiring grassroots success story. Comprising volunteer makers of personal protective equipment (PPE) across the Chicagoland area, the alliance was seeded at DePaul’s Idea Realization Lab (IRL) by its director, Jay Margalus, a School of Design instructor, who assembled a force of 3-D printers to create face shields for health care workers.
The Rationality Of Motherhood, Genevieve Kineke
The Rationality Of Motherhood, Genevieve Kineke
Theology Graduate Theses
Since both men and women, made in the divine image, bear rational souls, and the Catholic understanding of redemption requires that persons respond freely to the gift of grace, Saint Paul’s comment to Timothy that women can be saved through childbearing (cf. 1 Timothy 2:13-15) indicates that motherhood must be rational. This thesis responds to three different arguments against that premise—those of Simone deBeauvoir, Julia Kristeva, and Gertrude von le Fort—by illustrating that Thomas Aquinas’ application of Aristotelian principles restores both a proper understanding of rationality and how our hylemorphic construct directs us to our supernatural end. Weaving together a …

The Relationship Between Professional Nurse Certification And Nurse-Sensitive Patient Outcomes In The Acute Care Setting: An Integrative Literature Review, Julie Oss
Nursing Masters Papers
Healthcare organizations are charged with controlling rising costs, integrating services, and improving the quality of care. This Scholarly Inquiry Project has led to a closer look at the impact nurses have on patient care outcomes. Little research correlates specialty nurse certification with patient outcomes, even though certification is the hallmark of excellence in clinical nursing practice. Qualitative data validates that nurses who attain specialty certification report feeling more empowered, having additional innate worth, and more collaborative influence. Despite the robust subjective evidence, limited data exist to demonstrate the objective benefits of specialty certification on patient outcomes. The purpose of this …

Equitable Defenses In Patent Law, Christa J. Laser
Equitable Defenses In Patent Law, Christa J. Laser
University of Miami Law Review
In patent law, “unenforceability” can have immense consequences. At least five equitable doctrines make up the defense of “unenforceability” as it was codified into the Patent Act in 1952: laches; estoppel; unclean hands; patent misuse; and according to some, inequitable conduct. Yet in the seventy years since incorporation of equitable defenses into the patent statute, the Supreme Court has not clarified their reach. Indeed, twice in the last four years, the Supreme Court avoided giving complete guidance on the crucial questions of whether, and when, such equitable defenses are available to bar damages in cases brought at law.

The Middle Ground: A Meaningful Balance Between The Benefits And Limitations Of Artificial Intelligence To Assist With The Justice Gap, Katherine L. W. Norton
University of Miami Law Review
Access to justice continues to be an ongoing battle for those who cannot afford an attorney in civil legal matters. These civil legal matters touch issues that significantly impact daily life, from issues relating to health, such as advance directives, to family, such as custody of children. Lawyers, courts, and scholars have attempted to tackle this ongoing problem in our justice system. Some suggest that providing free counsel for all civil legal matters is the solution, while others suggest that self-help materials provide more immediate access to services and information. Regardless of the position one takes, the need is clear …

Novel Αvβ6 Inhibitor Reduces Fibrotic Progression In Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Murine Model, Rebecca C. Viazzo Winegar
Theses and Dissertations
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is one of the most aggressive and severe interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) for which there is no cure. IPF is characterized by an excessive accumulation of fibroblasts which secrete an abundance of extracellular proteins such as collagen. These processes lead to repetitive tissue scarring and fibrosis in the lung parenchyma. As a result, lungs become rigid limiting oxygen intake and gas exchange. Once diagnosed, IPF is fatal within 2-3 years. There is no known cause or proven treatment that significantly improves outcomes. Although the cause is unknown, the current model of IPF suggests that an overactive …

Building trust and forging relationships with remote Aboriginal communities is an essential element of culturally informed, reciprocal research. Historically these relationships have been formed over-time where community members and researchers come together face to face to share their knowledge and yarn in both an informal and formal manner. Researchers from Telethon Kids Institute are partnering with local stakeholders and remote Aboriginal communities in the Kimberley, Western Australia (WA) to support healthy skin through the SToP (See, Treat, Prevent skin sores and scabies) Trial. The SToP trial, a collaboration between Telethon Kids Institute, Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services (KAMS), Nirrumbuk Environmental Health …

An Overview Of The Effect Of Bioaerosol Size In Coronavirus Disease 2019 Transmission, Marcelo I. Guzman
An Overview Of The Effect Of Bioaerosol Size In Coronavirus Disease 2019 Transmission, Marcelo I. Guzman
Chemistry Faculty Publications
The fast spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) constitutes a worldwide challenge to the public health, educational and trade systems, affecting the overall well-being of human societies. The high transmission and mortality rates of this virus, and the unavailability of a vaccine or treatment, resulted in the decision of multiple governments to enact measures of social distancing. Such measures can reduce the exposure to bioaerosols, which can result in pathogen deposition in the respiratory tract of the host causing disease and an immunological response. Thus, it is important to consider the validity of the proposal for keeping a distance of …

Digime: An Interactive Experience To Ease The Education Of Social Information Sharing, Kexin 'Coco' Wang
Theses
Ever since digital and social media activities made their way into our day-to-day lives, things have become very different. People are continuously glued to their mobile devices, including children. Besides the tv screen time, mobile media time for 0-to-8 year-olds has tripled between 2013 and 2017, from an average of 15 minutes per day to 48 minutes per day1. As digital exposure is increasing at earlier ages, the danger of social information sharing increases as well.
Children do not often realize that they are giving out a vast quantity of their personal information, and even their parents' to the internet …

Global Emergencies: How Do They Affect Supply Chain Management Students?, Alexander Stratton
Honors Theses
The goal of this thesis project is to discover how the effects of global emergencies such as Covid-19 affect graduating supply chain management students. Global emergencies cause issues and can completely disrupt supply chains. Therefore, it is hypothesized that since supply chain students may be of help in aiding these supply chains that they may currently or eventually be of higher need and value. Global disasters are full of uncertainties and it is unknown how an event on the scale of Covid-19 will influence employment decisions made by supply chain employers. Uncertainty can be worrisome and cause stress, so it …

BACKGROUND: We have previously reported that in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) consumption of a very low carbohydrate diet capable of inducing nutritional ketosis over 2 years (continuous care intervention, CCI) resulted in improved body weight, glycemic control, and multiple risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) with the exception of an increase in low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). In the present study, we report the impact of this intervention on markers of risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD), with a focus on lipoprotein subfraction particle concentrations as well as carotid-artery intima-media thickness (CIMT).
METHODS: Analyses were performed in patients …
