Protein Kinase D1 Regulates Metabolic Switch In Pancreatic Cancer Via Modulation Of Mtorc1, Sonam Kumari, Sheema Khan, Radhiki Sekhri, Hassan Mandil, Stephen Behrman, Murali M. Yallapu, Subhash C. Chauhan, Meena Jaggi

School of Medicine Publications

BACKGROUND: Protein kinase D1 (PKD1) is a serine–threonine kinase that regulates various functions within the cell. Herein, we report the significance of PKD1 expression in glucose metabolism resulting in pancreatic cancer (PanCa) progression and chemo-resistance.

METHODS: PKD1 expression in PanCa was investigated by using immunohistochemistry. Functional and metabolic assays were utilised to analyse the effect of PKD1 expression/knockdown on associated cellular/molecular changes.

RESULTS: PKD1 expression was detected in human pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasia lesions (MCS=12.9; P < 0.0001) and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma samples (MCS=15, P < 0.0001) as compared with faint or no expression in normal pancreatic tissues (MCS= 1.54; P < 0.0001). Our results determine that PKD1 enhances glucose metabolism in PanCa cells, by triggering enhanced tumorigenesis and chemo-resistance. We demonstrate that mTORC1 activation by PKD1 regulates metabolic alterations in PanCa cells. siRNA knockdown of Raptor or treatment with rapamycin inhibited PKD1-accelerated lactate production as well as glucose consumption in cells, which confirms the association of mTORC1 with PKD1-induced metabolic alterations.

CONCLUSION: This study suggests a novel role of PKD1 as a key modulator of the glucose metabolism in PanCa cells accelerating tumorigenesis …

Named Data Networking (NDN) is proposed as a future Internet architecture, which provides name-based data publishing and fetching primitive. Compared to TCP/IP, the benefits of NDN are as follows. NDN removes the need to manage IP address; NDN provides semantically meaningful and structured names; NDN has a stateful and name-based forwarding plane; NDN supports data-centric security and in-network caching. Name-based Access Control is an access control solution proposed over NDN, which is a content-based access control by encrypting data at the time of production directly without relying on a third-party service(i.e., Cloud storage), utilizes NDN’s hierarchical naming convention to express …

Maturity And Well-Being: Consistent Associations Across Samples And Measures, Stephen Reysen, Courtney N. Plante, Truong Quang Lam, Shanmukh V. Kamble, Iva Katzarska-Miller, Natalia Assis, Grace Packard, Eduardo Gregolin Moretti

Journal of Wellness

Introduction: Researchers have noted an association between maturity and well-being. However, this body of research uses different measures and conceptualizations of maturity (e.g., ego development, psychosocial maturity) and often only a few indicators of well-being. In the present research, we examined associations between a single self-rated measure of maturity and a variety of different indicators of well-being. Furthermore, we examined this association across a variety of samples. We hypothesized that maturity will show a positive relationship with measures related to well-being.

Methods: Samples of college students (Studies 1, 3, 4), Star Wars fans (Study 2), and individuals in the U.S., …

Instrumental Quality Attributes Of Alaska Pollock Derived Surimi Gels With Sweet Potato Starch, Kiyonna Williams, Zandra Mikell, Samuel Chetachukwu Adegoke, Reza Tahergorabi Dec 2020

Instrumental Quality Attributes Of Alaska Pollock Derived Surimi Gels With Sweet Potato Starch, Kiyonna Williams, Zandra Mikell, Samuel Chetachukwu Adegoke, Reza Tahergorabi

RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences

Starch plays an important role in the formation of the network structure of surimi-starch gels. Alaska Pollock surimi gels were prepared with final moisture of 78%. Sweet potato starch (SPS) and silicon dioxide – inert filler, were added in inverse concentrations to develop treatments of 0% (control), 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8% SPS. Textural properties such as hardness, resilience, cohesiveness, gumminess, and chewiness were positively impacted by SPS. As the concentration of the SPS increased, a non-systematic trend was observed in the Kramer shear force of surimi gels. Total cooking loss and water holding capacity were significantly improved (P < 0.05). Surimi gels showed slight but significant reductions (P < 0.05) in whiteness with SPS addition due to significant decreases (P < 0.05) in L* and an increase in a* values. The Ash content of surimi gels increased with the addition of SPS. These results suggest that SPS can be incorporated into surimi products without compromising quality, which may be useful to manufacturers for marketing surimi products with added health benefits.

Raynaud’s disease is a cutaneous manifestation often present in various connective tissue and vascular diseases. Depending on the age of onset and acuity of symptoms, the phenomenon can provide clinicians with some insight as to the severity of underlying disease, including the distinction between primary and secondary Raynaud’s. However, this diagnostic approach seems to have its limitations regarding efficacy and timing of treatment. Traditionally, treatment of Raynaud’s has focused on reestablishing blood perfusion to affected tissue, which has previously been achieved with vasodilatory medications and site-specific surgical intervention. In lieu of the severe sequelae of Raynaud’s in the setting of …

Background: Cancer-related abdominal pain is a common symptom associated with upper intra-abdominal carcinoma, especially in patients with advanced disease and it has posed a significant therapeutic challenge to medical practitioners. Typically, cancer pain can be managed by following the World Health Organization 3-step analgesic ladder. However, analgesic use of opioids, the mainstay treatment for moderate-to-severe cancer-related pain, may be ineffective in a subset of cancer patients. Escalation of dosage may be limited by opioid-induced side effects. The aim of this study was to review the literature addressing the effect of neurolytic celiac plexus block (NCPB) on the palliation of pain …

Introduction

Despite high costs of education, extended lengths of training, and rapidly increasing student debt, personal finance is an often-overlooked topic within professional school curricula. Due to the combination of high debt burden and poor financial literacy, professional students report low confidence and high stress regarding their personal finances. While some medical schools have begun to integrate financial education into their formal training, others provide little to no resources to combat this growing issue.

Methods

To address this gap and provide financial education opportunities, the Financial Development Club (FDC) was founded by students at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. …

The Yakuza: Organized Crime In Japan, Darlene N. Moorman

The Downtown Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal Written and Peer-Reviewed by Mandel Honors College Students at Cleveland State University

Examining organized crime groups should not be purely economic; in other words, the culture, social structure, political contexts, and so on, are also critical in an insightful analysis of any organized crime group. For this paper, the Japanese yakuza are considered both in an economic viewpoint, such as how they make money, but also in other areas, such as its syndicates' notable cultural contributions and specific social characteristics. Moreover, this paper explores the dynamic changing of the organization overtime, especially in regards to its shifting relationship with the Japanese government.

Foreign Investments In Disputed Maritime Zones: Maritime Disputes As Events Of Force Majeure In International Law And International Investment Contracts, Hazem M. Kassem

BAU Journal - Journal of Legal Studies - مجلة الدراسات القانونية

Sovereign rights in Exclusive economic zones and Continental shelves are functionally limited to the economic exploitation of these zones. Moreover, in the case of disputed maritime zones these sovereign rights are neither exclusive nor necessarily constant. Nevertheless, states are still expected to provide the investments established in these zones the same treatment they should provide in their territories where they exercise full and constant sovereignty. If a host state agrees to the establishment of an investment in a maritime zone that become later contested, do the occurrence of the contestation and the hazards arising from such contestation relief the host …

Rapid Shifts In Educators’ Perceptions Of Data Literacy Priorities, Kristin Fontichiaro, Melissa P. Johnston

Journal of Media Literacy Education

To meet the challenges of a data-driven society, high school students need new arrays of literacy skills. In the United States, school librarians, who work across disciplines, are well-positioned to help students improve their data practice, but they first need new domain knowledge. This article presents findings from an evaluating survey and session evaluation data from a virtual data literacy conference, which were part of a federally-funded project to develop data literacy skills among high school librarians and educators. Findings indicated a noticeable shift in participant perceptions of the need and urgency for data literacy instruction across content areas and …

The paper will explore the meanings of data citizenship, in light of the findings of a …

Data (Il)Literacy Education As A Hidden Curriculum Of The Datafication Of Education, Pekka Mertala Dec 2020

Data (Il)Literacy Education As A Hidden Curriculum Of The Datafication Of Education, Pekka Mertala

Journal of Media Literacy Education

This position paper uses the concept of “hidden curriculum” as a heuristic device to analyze everyday data-related practices in formal education. Grounded in a careful reading of the theoretical literature, this paper argues that the everyday data-related practices of contemporary education can be approached as functional forms of data literacy education: deeds with unintentional educational consequences for students’ relationships with data and datafication. More precisely, this paper suggests that everyday data-related practices represent data as cognitive authority and naturalize the routines of all-pervading data collection. These routines lead to what is here referred to as “data (il)literacy” – an uncritical, …

Nonlinearities And The Determinants Of Inequality: New Panel Evidence, Antonio Francesco Gravina, Matteo Lanzafame Dec 2020

Nonlinearities And The Determinants Of Inequality: New Panel Evidence, Antonio Francesco Gravina, Matteo Lanzafame

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Relying on data for a panel of 90 economies over 1970-2015 and System-GMM estimates, we extend the standard Kuznets-curve empirical framework to investigate how financial development, globalisation and technology affect income inequality. Our findings reveal the presence of significant nonlinearities, consistent with either U-shaped or inverted U-shaped relationships. As such, depending on whether a certain threshold value is achieved, the same determinants of income distribution can exert opposite effects in different countries. Globalisation is associated to increasing inequality in most advanced economies, but to falling disparities for the large majority of emerging economies. Further, while the effects for advanced economies …

Welfare Costs Of Catastrophes: Lost Consumption And Lost Lives, Ian W. R. Martin, Robert S. Pindyck

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Most of the literature on the economics of catastrophes assumes that such events cause a reduction in the stream of consumption, as opposed to widespread fatalities. Here we show how to incorporate death in a model of catastrophe avoidance, and how a catastrophic loss of life can be expressed as a welfare-equivalent drop in consumption. We examine how potential fatalities affect the policy interdependence of catastrophic events and “willingness to pay" (WTP) to avoid them. Using estimates of the “value of a statistical life" (VSL), we find the WTP to avoid major pandemics, and show it is large (10% or …
