Visualization Of Real-Time Displacement Time History Superimposed With Dynamic Experiments Using Wireless Smart Sensors And Augmented Reality, Marlon Frank Agüero Injante

Civil Engineering ETDs

Wireless Smart Sensor (WSS) process field data and inform structural field engineers and owners about the infrastructure health, condition, and safety. Engineers acquire the data and investigate changes on displacements under loads to make informed choices and prioritize decisions concerning maintenance, required repairs, and infrastructure replacements. However, reliable data collection and access to displacement information in the field in real-time under loads remains a challenge. The displacement data provided by the WSS in the field undergoes additional processing, and it is seen at a different location, at the decision-making headquarters. If inspectors were able to observe structural displacements in real-time …

Thomson, Jennifer Hunter, Jonathan Dutton, James Schneider, Maryam Khosravi, Alisha Casement, Kulwant Dhadwal, Daniel Martin

Peninsula Medical School

Background Cohorts of severely ill patients with COVID-19 have been described in several countries around the globe, but to date there have been few published reports from the United Kingdom (UK). Understanding the characteristics of the affected population admitted to intensive care units (ICUs) in the UK is crucial to inform clinical decision making, research and planning for future waves of infection. Methods We conducted a prospective observational cohort study of all patients with COVID-19 admitted to a large UK ICU from March to May 2020 with follow-up to June 2020. Data were collected from health records using a standardised …

The normal flora community plays a significant role in both healthy and patient individual’s bodies. It has improved its ability to change from beneficial to opportunistic organisms causing crucial infections in immunocompromised patients. This study was conducted to identify the community of yeast species, and to investigate potential virulence factors. Saliva samples were collected from healthy individuals, yeast species were isolated and identified using both traditional and advance molecular genetics technique. The results revealed that Candida albicans was the dominant isolate, while Meyerozyma caribbica was the least. The phylogenetic tree was constructed for 13 species using the Neighbour-Joining method, which …

Health And Safety Reminders Via Augmented Reality Glasses, Ruofei Du, Shengzhi Wu

Defensive Publications Series

With the proliferation of personal electronic devices, the time individuals spend using their devices is an increasing concern. In particular, users may unconsciously spend too much time looking at a screen; their eyes may be too close to a screen, leading to eye strain; their posture may be suboptimal, leading to back or neck strain; etc. This disclosure describes techniques to leverage depth information detected with user permission via one or more sensors to determine when such situations occur and to provide suitable reminders to users, e.g., via augmented reality (AR) glasses.

Florida University (1883), C. L. Crow

The most ambitious and most visionary attempt ever made to establish in Florida an institution of higher learning was probably that of the founders, or founder, of Florida University. The plan of organization of the proposed school, altho not successfully carried out, was nevertheless worthy of some respect, for Dr. Kost, its main proponent, had perhaps a vision similar in part to that which afterward inspired Mr. Buckman.

Letters From East Florida, Dorothy Dodd Dec 2020

Letters From East Florida, Dorothy Dodd

Florida Historical Quarterly

Before the outbreak of the Seminole Indian War in 1835 the northern counties of East Florida were increasing in population at a faster rate than Middle and West Florida. Although the country was but sparsely settled there were a number of flourishing plantations, but these were laid waste by the Indians during the next seven years and immigration into that section almost entirely ceased. On the termination of the war in 1842, Congress passed a temporary free homestead act to encourage settlers to come into the section that had been the seat of the war in the hope that settlement …

William Panton, Marie Taylor Greenslade Dec 2020

William Panton, Marie Taylor Greenslade

Florida Historical Quarterly

Much has been written of William Panton and his connection with the Floridas, but even so, in justice to him, too little; for, with few exceptions, most references and accounts of him have appeared in historical writings which are unsympathetic, if not antipathetic, toward the regime under which he lived and the interests he represented. There exists available material in the form of previously unpublished papers and letters of the trading house of Panton, Leslie & Company, which fills out the picture of Panton, enhances his stature, and helps to correct many inaccuracies in factual statement and estimation of character.

The First American Road In Florida: Papers Relating To The Survey And Construction Of The Pensacola-St. Augustine Highway, Part I, Mark F. Boyd

Florida Historical Quarterly

In these days of paved highways and of swift private transportation, accounts of early efforts to improve communications have a great interest. After American occupation of the territory of Florida, the inaccessibility of the only centers of population to each other soon attracted interest. This resulted in the projection and construction of the old Pensacola-St. Augustine highway, today an abandoned and almost forgotten route across the state, but interesting as the first instance of American road construction in Florida, as well as the fact that the eastern half would appear to follow one of the early Spanish routes from St. …

Implementing Strategic Support For Sexual Minority Youth And Exploring The Effects Of Social Connectedness, Dawn Whidden, Kelly Brown, J. Vince Nix Dec 2020

Implementing Strategic Support For Sexual Minority Youth And Exploring The Effects Of Social Connectedness, Dawn Whidden, Kelly Brown, J. Vince Nix

School Leadership Review

ABSTRACT

IMPLEMENTING STRATEGIC SUPPORT FOR SEXUAL MINORITY YOUTH AND EXPLORING THE EFFECTS OF SOCIAL CONNECTEDNESS

Youth spend the majority of their time in schools which is considered one of the most influential environments (Roeser, Eccles, & Samroff, 2000). Students connected to their learning environments are healthier, happier and achieve higher academic success (Juvonen, 2006). Sexual minority youth (SMY), students who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT+), encounter daily challenges (Craig & McInroy, 2013). The purpose of this research was to study the impact of social connectedness and its effects on sexual minority youth (SMY) and overall campus culture. …

Teacher Retention In A Rural East Texas School District, Gary J. Miller Dec 2020

Teacher Retention In A Rural East Texas School District, Gary J. Miller

School Leadership Review

This qualitative study investigated what factors kept teachers committed to teaching in one rural east Texas school district despite the perceived educational inequalities of rural districts compared to suburban and urban districts. When it comes to teacher retention, rural school leaders cite school environment and community lifestyle compatibility as the primary reasons for staying. Despite the considerable number of rural school districts throughout the United States, research continues to largely ignore the unique relationships found in rural locales. Rural school districts offer many advantages over their suburban and urban counterparts; it is a matter of identifying what is important to …

Educational Leaders Can Lead The Way For Increased Academic Achievement For Students On The Autism Spectrum, Stephanie C. Holmes, Jennifer Butcher Dec 2020

Educational Leaders Can Lead The Way For Increased Academic Achievement For Students On The Autism Spectrum, Stephanie C. Holmes, Jennifer Butcher

School Leadership Review

The problem that drove this study was the increasing number of students with autism entering the school system, and the barriers often encountered for both academic and social inclusion for students on the autism spectrum. Autism Spectrum Disorder, as defined by diagnostic criteria, includes deficits in social-relational communication; social-communication deficits can lead to educational impacts and limit opportunities upon transitioning from the public-school system. The purpose of this study was to examine the barriers to inclusion, from the perspectives of key stakeholders to include Local Education Agency (LEA) representatives, general and special education teachers, school counselors, school psychologists, speech-language pathologists …

Pandemic Policy Preparedness: Unintentional Student Discrimination In The Wake Of Covid-19, Jerry Burkett, Danielle Reynolds Dec 2020

Pandemic Policy Preparedness: Unintentional Student Discrimination In The Wake Of Covid-19, Jerry Burkett, Danielle Reynolds

School Leadership Review

Educational leadership requires a set of skills and practices that are shaped by professional ethics. Professional ethics are the dynamics of both personal and professional ethics and requires educational leaders to understand how these ethical codes drive interactions and decisions especially in difficult situations (Shapiro & Stefkovich, 2016). Anderson (2014) argues that educational leaders may not have the deeper understanding of social justice necessary to “better scholarship, but also to better practice” (pp. x) due to the current expectations of leaders including increasing test scores and accountability ratings and addressing social and emotional learning.

Adding to the current expectations of …

Faculty Research 2020

N-Glycanase 1 (NGLY1) is a cytoplasmic deglycosylating enzyme. Loss-of-function mutations in the NGLY1 gene cause NGLY1 deficiency, which is characterized by developmental delay, seizures, and a lack of sweat and tears. To model the phenotypic variability observed among patients, we crossed a Drosophila model of NGLY1 deficiency onto a panel of genetically diverse strains. The resulting progeny showed a phenotypic spectrum from 0 to 100% lethality. Association analysis on the lethality phenotype, as well as an evolutionary rate covariation analysis, generated lists of modifying genes, providing insight into NGLY1 function and disease. The top association hit was Ncc69 (human NKCC1/2 …

Safety Huddles: A Safety Net For Nurses Amid The Covid-19 Pandemic, Miranda Saint-Louis

DNP Qualifying Manuscripts

In March 2020, our 31-bed geriatric medical unit was designated the first COVID-19 unit in a teaching hospital located in a New York City COVID-19 hot zone. At the time, little was known about SARS-CoV-2 and the disease it caused. We needed to find a way to keep them calm, assure their safety, and provide competent and compassionate patient care in a situation where best practices had not yet been established. The concepts from this article can be applied to provide support staff in any crisis. Providing a safety net for staff enables a focus on life-saving patient care without …
