Uncalibrated Chronotypes: Circadian Clocks In The Wake Of Covid-19, Nicolas Nelson, Zachary Highley-Gergel, Nicole Simone, Nikolaos Mouchtouris, Adam Dicker
Phase 1
Background: All life is attuned to Earth’s light–dark cycle. In humans, the hypothalamus calibrates the body to circadian cycles of homeostatic activity. The mechanism responsible may run shorter or longer than 24 hours, which is thought to be the basis of chronotype—an intrinsic preference for mornings or evenings. Circadian rhythms can be recalibrated by environmental cues (lighting, temperature, mealtimes) to keep the body aligned with societal time; however, chronic disruptions produce a range of adverse cognitive effects. Early COVID-19 stay-at-home conditions were unique for students because their cues no longer adhered to strict scheduling. Our objective was to determine how …
Social Factors That Exacerbate Features Of Borderline Personality Disorder In Young Adult Women, Erika Marie Carrasquillo
Social Factors That Exacerbate Features Of Borderline Personality Disorder In Young Adult Women, Erika Marie Carrasquillo
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Although there are studies conducted with Hispanics and Puerto Ricans living in the United States, there are no studies with female Puerto Rican BPD patients residing in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico available. Since most of the individuals affected by this condition are female, the present research was focused on uncovering factors that increased the likelihood of BPD features in women between the ages of 25-35 years. The purpose of this study was to examine the social factors that exacerbate borderline personality disorder in the female population between 25 and 35 years of age living in the metropolitan area of …

Single-Subject Analyses Reveal Altered Performance And Muscle Activation During Vertical Jumping, John R. Harry, Jeffrey D. Eggleston, Janet S. Dufek, C. Roger James
Kinesiology and Nutrition Sciences Faculty Research
Effects of barefoot and minimal footwear conditions on performance during jumping (i.e., jump displacement) are unclear with traditional group-level studies because of intra- and interindividual variability. We compared barefoot, minimal, and conventional athletic footwear conditions relative to countermovement vertical jump (CMVJ) performance and muscle activation using a single-subject approach. Fifteen men (1.8 ± 0.6 m; 84.5 ± 8.5 kg; 23.8 ± 2.3 y) performed three CMVJ trials in barefoot, minimal, and conventional footwear conditions while ground reaction forces (GRF) and electromyograms of eight lower extremity muscles were recorded. The Model Statistic procedure (α = 0.05) compared conditions for CMVJ displacement, …
Communicable Diseases As Occupational Hazards For Agricultural Workers: Using Experience Sampling Methods For Promoting Public Health, Mahima Saxena, Margaret M. Burke
Communicable Diseases As Occupational Hazards For Agricultural Workers: Using Experience Sampling Methods For Promoting Public Health, Mahima Saxena, Margaret M. Burke
Psychology Faculty Publications
Vector-borne communicable diseases cause more than 700,000 deaths annually (World Health Organization, 2019). Despite various efforts, there has been no change in mortality rates due to communicable diseases worldwide (World Health Organization, 2019). Most communicable diseases have no cure and can attain epidemic status quickly. Therefore, prevention is critical in reducing disease transmission. Communicable disease transmission as an occupational health hazard is often ignored in work psychology research and public health policy. Using experience sampling methods, Saxena (2015) found that work and nonwork behaviors associated with rice farming in South Asia increase exposure to Japanese encephalitis. …

Combined US-triggered microbubble destruction and hepatocellular carcinoma radioembolization showed improved treatment response compared with radioembolization alone and no changes in vital signs or liver function.
Background US contrast agents are gas-filled microbubbles (MBs) that can be locally destroyed by using external US. Among other bioeffects, US-triggered MB destruction, also known as UTMD, has been shown to sensitize solid tumors to radiation in preclinical models through localized insult to the vascular endothelial cells.
Purpose: To evaluate the safety and preliminary efficacy of combining US-triggered MB destruction and transarterial radioembolization (TARE) in participants with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

Regenerating Teacher Education Programs With Indigenous Knowledge In Idaho, Vanessa Anthony-Stevens, Johanna Jones, Victor Begay
Regenerating Teacher Education Programs With Indigenous Knowledge In Idaho, Vanessa Anthony-Stevens, Johanna Jones, Victor Begay
Northwest Journal of Teacher Education
This paper examines movements in educational policy to address the inequitable schooling experiences of American Indian youth. We look specifically at recent policy revisions to teacher education standards in the state of Idaho which intend to address preservice teachers’ knowledge and dispositions to build understanding and respect for Indigenous ways of knowing and tribal sovereignty in classrooms and schools. We argue that critical, culturally based teacher training programs can prepare competent, equity conscious teachers to address the unique challenges of schools, especially those serving Indigenous youth. Such frameworks are vital acts of social justice education which benefit all students.

Health Insurance And The Undocumented Immigrant, Anja Diercks
Honors Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to perform a comparative analysis on how seven different countries (USA, South Africa, Germany, England, Canada, France and Singapore) organize their healthcare system to cope with the issue of undocumented immigrants and whether or not these systems in place were “fair.” The thesis will also explore the possible ways the United States could change to be more inclusive and fairer in the world of healthcare and health insurance for the undocumented immigrant. A study on what fairness means both in ethical and economical terms is done to suggest a new basis of a fair …

Background Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a risk factor for cognitive decline, possibly from silent brain infarction. Left atrial changes in structure or function (atrial cardiopathy) can lead to AF but may impact cognition independently. It is unknown if AF or atrial cardiopathy also acts on Alzheimer disease-specific mechanisms, such as deposition of β-amyloid. Methods and Results A total of 316 dementia-free participants from the ARIC (Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities) study underwent florbetapir positron emission tomography, electrocardiography, and 2-dimensional echocardiography. Atrial cardiopathy was defined as ≥1: (1) left atrial volume index >34 mL/m

The Kitchen Table: Relationships With The People, Food And Land That Sustain Us, Chelsey Frost
Masters Theses
The purpose of this paper is to examine the ways in which interactions with food and around food affect an individual’s sense of self, connection to community as well as to friends and family, and sense of place. Short, personal narrative gives way to discussion of such themes and ideas as home, homemade food and terroir. It becomes clear that acts of celebration of and gratitude for food, particularly in connection with a specific place or line of heritage, play necessary roles in the development of our personal identities and in our search for belonging. These stories are based on …
Mobility Justice And Social Capital In Strawberry Mansion And Kensington, Philadelphia Pa, Rebecca Fruehwald
Mobility Justice And Social Capital In Strawberry Mansion And Kensington, Philadelphia Pa, Rebecca Fruehwald
Masters Theses
This thesis explores the theoretical and practical relationship between mobility justice and social capital. A literature review establishes the theoretical relationship through an overview of history and policy. The relationship is then explored through a case study of Strawberry Mansion and Kensington neighborhoods in Philadelphia. These sections are then connected by considering how they are both impacted by the larger system of capitalism. The real-world example of gentrification is given for how all these elements interact and affect each other, and the practical relationship between mobility justice and social capital is established. Finally, policy implementations and paths for possible future …
Exploring Multimedia Storytelling As A Novel Tool To Inspire Americans To Participate In Wildlife Conservation, Megan Brief
Exploring Multimedia Storytelling As A Novel Tool To Inspire Americans To Participate In Wildlife Conservation, Megan Brief
Masters Theses
Human and nonhuman animal lives are intimately entangled. In the age of the Anthropocene, it is imperative to reexamine our proximity and kinship with nature. Human-wildlife conflict can evolve into coexistence through conservation efforts marked by creativity and compassion. To inspire conservation action among North American audiences, we must enact novel ways of disseminating scientifically technical concepts. Multimedia storytelling can encourage equitable involvement among lay participants in conservation spaces. When inclusive of Indigenous knowledges, and conscious of damage narratives, such innovative stories can empathetically communicate wildlife degradation and injustices, as well as animate vulnerable human and nonhuman communities.

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) are a major concern worldwide due to their increasing impacts in recent years, and these extreme events may trigger deoxygenation of coastal waters affected by sewage and eutrophication. Here we investigate the combined effects of MHWs and nutrient enrichment on the water quality and biodiversity of the Bay of Santa Catarina Island (Brazil). We used historical (1994–2020) sea surface temperature data from satellites and in situ physical, chemical and biological parameters to assess temporal trends. Oxygen levels have been decreasing whilst phosphorus levels have been increasing in the bay. During the austral summer of 2020 a regional …

Pd1 Inhibitor Induced Inverse Lichenoid Eruption: A Case Series, Mansha Sethi, Vaibhav Garg, Jason Lee, Sherry Yang
Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers
The increased use of monoclonal antibodies that target the immune checkpoint T cell receptor programmed death-1 (PD1) to treat numerous solid tumors has led to several reports describing associated cutaneous adverse events. Although lichenoid reactions have been well described, we propose that PD1 inhibitor-induced inverse lichenoid eruption (PILE) is a distinct variant. We describe two patients who presented with nearly identical deeply erythematous, malodorous, eroded anogenital plaques with focal crusting. Diagnosis of PILE was established given the biopsy findings and temporal association with PD1 inhibitor therapy. Treatment with clobetasol ointment was successful without necessitating discontinuation of immunotherapy. The findings were …

Understanding Free-Roaming Horse Conflicts With Wildlife In The Great Basin, S. Nicole Frey, Eric Thacker, Katlyn Uhart
All Current Publications
Horses and burros were introduced to North America in the 1600s with European missionaries and explorers. Over time, abandoned and released horses and burros formed herds and by the time European-American settlers began to explore North America in the 1700s, these free-roaming horses and burros had adapted to their habitat and been incorporated into Native American culture. By the mid-1900s, most Americans considered these horses as wild and symbols of freedom and beauty.
In 1971, Congress passed the Wild and Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act (Public Law 73-482) to provide federal protection for free-roaming horses and burros (also known as …

A Pragmatic Analysis Of Oxymoron In Poetry: Tennyson’S “Lancelot And Elaine” As An Example, M.A.Amani M. Hussein
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
This paper purports to explore aspects of implied meaning carried out through the vehicle of oxymoron, which is a figure of speech that juxtaposes two contradictory words (or strings of words) in order to point to a curious fact or a beguiling statement. The different types of oxymoron are studied in this paper in accordance with a pragmatic approach that, though taking into consideration the theoretical implications of oxymoron, is primarily interested in practical aspects of the investigation. Grice’s maxims are taken as a point of departure to guide the discussion of both generalized implicature and particularized implicature.
The paper …

Chronic Pain Acceptance And Social Support Among Patients With Chronic Disease, Ashraf Muwafaq Flaiyah, Saif Mohammed Radeef
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
Chronic pain acceptance is developing as a vital concept to understand ways that chronic pain patients can remain engaged with valued parts of life. If patients find their pain inacceptable, they will likely work to avoid it at all costs and readily seek to reduce or eliminate it. Such measures may not be of best interest when they require no pain reduction and many missed opportunities to work more effectively and productively. The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of chronic pain acceptance among individuals who suffering chronic disease as well as to identify the differences in …
