Conducting A Feasibility Study For Generating Power From Renewable Energy Resources And Utilizing High Voltage Direct Current For Interconnection In The Middle East And North Africa, Rashid Al Maazmi, Mahmood Broushan

Theses

Electricity consumption is on the rise as the global population is increasing. The need of energy has been discussed in length over the years. Oil and gas have been the primary resource for generators fuel. As oil and gas are a finite resource, an alternative resource that does not harm the environment is needed to generate energy. The Middle East and North Africa have a huge potential for using solar and wind energy to generate electricity as MENA region has one of the highest levels on solar irradiation. A new system of transferring the power through the MENA region is …

Hope Home For Children: How Architecture Can Heal People Emotionally, Fatemeh Sahamirad Nov 2020

Hope Home For Children: How Architecture Can Heal People Emotionally, Fatemeh Sahamirad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This thesis investigates how architecture can heal people by creating spaces that consider emotional needs. This exploration is developed through the design of a group home for children without parental support in Memphis, Tennessee. This thesis suggests that the solution to the problem of a place for children is not just providing shelter. Rather, the challenge is to create spaces that respond to their psychosocial needs in different stages of life. This design engages human psychology and particular human interaction in the community (in large and small groups) as well as providing spaces for individual expression.

Enclosing Water: Privatization, Commodification, And Access, Daniel Jaffee Nov 2020

Enclosing Water: Privatization, Commodification, And Access, Daniel Jaffee

Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations

This chapter examines the global political economy of access to drinking water, with particular attention to the implications for environmental and social justice. After reviewing theoretical approaches to the privatization and commodification of drinking water, the chapter examines the institutional and ideological drivers, dynamics, and effects of the enclosure of municipal (tap) water supplies, and the substantial countermovements it has generated, drawing on case studies from both the global South and the North. The chapter briefly reviews the present status of municipal water privatization, and then turns to another major modality of water commodification: bottled water. It explores the dramatic …

Analysis Of Electric Vehicle Charging Behavior Patterns With Function Principal Component Analysis Approach, Chenxi Chen, Yang Song, Xianbiao Hu, Ivan G. Guardiola

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This manuscript focused on analyzing electric vehicles’ (EV) charging behavior patterns with a functional data analysis (FDA) approach, with the goal of providing theoretical support to the EV infrastructure planning and regulation, as well as the power grid load management. 5-year real-world charging log data from a total of 455 charging stations in Kansas City, Missouri, was used. The focuses were placed on analyzing the daily usage occupancy variability, daily energy consumption variability, and station-level usage variability. Compared with the traditional discrete-based analysis models, the proposed FDA modeling approach had unique advantages in preserving the smooth function behavior of the …

Rights And Health Versus Rights To Health: Bringing Indigenous Peoples’ Legal Rights Into The Spaces Of Health Care Services, Sarah E. Nelson, Kathi Wilson Nov 2020

Rights And Health Versus Rights To Health: Bringing Indigenous Peoples’ Legal Rights Into The Spaces Of Health Care Services, Sarah E. Nelson, Kathi Wilson

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

The political-legal discourse of Indigenous rights continues to be separated from discussions of health care services in geographic scholarship, due to the ways in which political-legal, settler-colonial definitions of rights fail to take Indigenous understandings into account, as well as a distrust on the part of scholars of the limited and contingent notion of “rights.” While Indigenous rights, inherently tied in Canada to recognition by the settler-colonial state, have limited application in achieving social justice or decolonization for Indigenous peoples, we argue that Indigenous rights can be used as a complementary discourse to Indigenous resurgence, within broader discourses of Indigenous …

Rural Resentment And Lgbtq Equality, Luke A. Boso Nov 2020

Rural Resentment And Lgbtq Equality, Luke A. Boso

Florida Law Review

In 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court in Obergefell v. Hodges settled a decades-long national debate over the legality of same-sex marriage. Since Obergefell, however, local and state legislatures in conservative and mostly rural states have proposed and passed hundreds of anti-LGBTQ bills. Obergefell may have ended the legal debate over same-sex marriage, but it did not resolve the cultural divide. Many rural Americans, especially in predominately white communities, feel that they are under attack. Judicial opinions and legislation protecting LGBTQ people from discrimination are serious threats to rural dwellers because they conflict with several core tenets of rural identity: …

Regulation And The Marginalist Revolution, Herbert Hovenkamp Nov 2020

Regulation And The Marginalist Revolution, Herbert Hovenkamp

Florida Law Review

The marginalist revolution in economics became the foundation for the modern regulatory State with its “mixed” economy. For the classical political economists, value was a function of past averages. Marginalism substituted forward looking theories based on expectations about firm and market performance. Marginalism swept through university economics, and by 1920 or so virtually every academic economist was a marginalist.

This Article considers the historical influence of marginalism on regulatory policy in the United States. My view is at odds with those who argue that marginalism saved capitalism by rationalizing it as a more defensible buttress against incipient socialism. While marginalism …

Intellectual Property And The End Of Work, Camilla A. Hrdy Nov 2020

Intellectual Property And The End Of Work, Camilla A. Hrdy

Florida Law Review

The conventional wisdom is that intellectual property (IP) is good for jobs. Indeed, according to legislators and the U.S. patent office, IP “creates jobs.” But this is not quite right. A primary function of IP is to increase the amount of innovation in the economy. Yet a significant subset of the innovations protected by IP rights, from self-service kiosks to self-driving cars, are in fact labor-saving and indeed labor-displacing. They reduce the amount of paid human labor required to complete a task. Therefore, to the extent IP is successful at incentivizing innovation, IP actually contributes to job loss. More precisely, …

Disruptive Philanthropy: Chan-Zuckerberg, The Limited Liability Company, And The Millionaire Next Door, Dana Brakman Reiser Nov 2020

Disruptive Philanthropy: Chan-Zuckerberg, The Limited Liability Company, And The Millionaire Next Door, Dana Brakman Reiser

Florida Law Review

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Dr. Priscilla Chan, have pledged to give 99% of their net worth to—in their words—“advance[e] human potential and promot[e] equal opportunity.” To make good on this promise, however, they did not set up a traditional nonprofit, tax-exempt organization. Instead, they founded the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative, a limited liability company (LLC). The bulk of this Article provides the definitive explanation for this seemingly bizarre choice. Importantly, the philanthropy LLC structure offers donors the flexibility to bolster charitable grantmaking with impact investment and political advocacy, free of the restrictions, penalties, and transparency requirements applied to tax-exempt …

Does Bitcoin Use Affect Crime Rates?, Kevin Keane Nov 2020

Does Bitcoin Use Affect Crime Rates?, Kevin Keane

The Corinthian

Bitcoin is the most widely used cryptocurrency in the world because of its decentralized network that completes user-to-user transactions, eliminating the need for intermediaries. During 2017, the volume of Bitcoin transactions totaled $94.3 trillion. Bitcoin transactions are recorded in a public database called the blockchain. Although the blockchain can keep track of how many transactions there are, it can’t identify the people involved in transactions. The lack of identity increases the anonymity of Bitcoin transactions, making it less detectable when used for crime. Using the Uniform Crime Reporting’s state-level crime rate data and blockchain’s Bitcoin transaction information, I estimate the …

Implementation Of Smartphone Navigation Features By Combined Forces In Determining The Hazards Of Terrorism In Poso, Mahturai Rian Fitra Mrf, Arthur Josias Simon Runturambi Ajsr

Journal of Terrorism Studies

The presence of armed terrorist groups in Poso can threaten security conditions in the country because their activities are considered quite dangerous for the surrounding community. This terrorist group did not hesitate to kill civilians who tried to deny its existence. Therefore, various joint military operations have been launched to crush this armed terrorist group, such as Camar Maleo and Tinombala. However, until now this terrorist group is difficult to destroy, due to the condition of the operating area in the form of dense tropical rainforest and steep slopes. This makes it difficult for troops to carry out chases and …

Autoethnography As A Decolonizing Methodology: Reflections On Masta’S What The Grandfathers Taught Me, Dung T. Pham, June E. Gothberg Nov 2020

Autoethnography As A Decolonizing Methodology: Reflections On Masta’S What The Grandfathers Taught Me, Dung T. Pham, June E. Gothberg

The Qualitative Report

As an Asian graduate student and a Native professor at a U.S. Midwestern Predominantly White Institution, we reflected upon Masta’s (2018) article, What the Grandfathers Taught Me: Lessons for an Indian Country Researcher, to examine the decolonizing aspects of autoethnography. Masta’s use of autoethnography to explore her experiences provides a deeply personal view into the phenomenon of living and researching Indigenous in an America that is inherently White in character, tradition, structure, and culture. The use of participatory and constructivist Indigenous autoethnography places the lived experience of an Indigenous woman at the center of the study, using the Indigenous …

Princess Olga: Eastern Woman Through Western Eyes, Lee A. Hitt Nov 2020

Princess Olga: Eastern Woman Through Western Eyes, Lee A. Hitt

Honors College Theses

In the Viking world, stories of women inciting revenge reach back through the past into oral history. These legends were written down in the sagas of the Icelanders. Princess Olga’s story was recorded in the Russian Primary Chronicle. Though her heritage is uncertain, Olga ruled in Kievan Rus’ in the ninth and tenth centuries. Kievan Rus’ was governed by Vikings from Sweden known as Varangians. There are similarities between Olga’s story and the sagas. This study applies the research of scholars who pioneered the topic of gendering the Old Norse Icelandic literature, to compare her story to the gender …

Six Feet Of Distance Between Belonging: Expansions And Maintenance Of Citizenship During Covid-19, Johnathon Daniel Vargas

University Honors Theses

Citizenship is the dominant 'political regime of belonging' that is coupled with rights and access to necessary material resources. This paper reviews the dimensions of citizenship, its connection to the nation-state, and analytical approaches to belonging. The review of literature is then applied to an analysis of how COVID-19 has challenged notions of citizenship by revealing maintenance strategies and enactments of belonging in Portland, Oregon and the surrounding region. This paper uses qualitative research to analyze events, communication, activities, and conditions of those who lack citizenship, mediated through local media. Data collected from the first 3 months of the COVID-19 …

A Spatial And Multivariate Approach To Examining Effects Of Urbanization On Nitrogen Sources, Organic Matter Inputs, And Trophic Structure In Streams Of Cobb And Paulding Counties, Georgia., Katharine Horning Nov 2020

A Spatial And Multivariate Approach To Examining Effects Of Urbanization On Nitrogen Sources, Organic Matter Inputs, And Trophic Structure In Streams Of Cobb And Paulding Counties, Georgia., Katharine Horning

Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses

Urbanization and land use changes have a negative effect on streams often causing numerous physical changes in stream morphology, a change in nutrient concentrations, and altered ecosystems contributing to a loss of habitat, decreased biodiversity, and loss of stability for ecosystem function (Walsh et al., 2005; Meyer et al., 2005; Cardinale and Palmer, 2012). The use of stable isotope analysis for monitoring could be valuable because it accounts for temporal integration from anthropogenic wastewater inputs, characterized by a shift in the abundance of 15N. This project had three main objectives: (1) to examine how nitrogen and carbon sources are …

Late-Holocene Treeline Shifts In The Northwestern Uinta Mountains, Northeastern Utah, W. Wyatt Oswald, Barry S. Goodell Nov 2020

Late-Holocene Treeline Shifts In The Northwestern Uinta Mountains, Northeastern Utah, W. Wyatt Oswald, Barry S. Goodell

Western North American Naturalist

Remnant wood found above the present-day altitudinal limit of trees provides a record of treeline shifts in response to past variations in climate. 14C dating and wood identification of remnant trees from Windy Ridge, a ridgeline in the northwestern Uinta Mountains of northeastern Utah, show treeline ~100 m higher than today between ~730 and 500 calibrated 14C years before present (cal yr BP; ~1220–1450 CE). This treeline shift coincides with the Medieval Climatic Anomaly (MCA), suggesting that warm temperatures allowed limber pine (Pinus flexilis) and Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii) to establish above the current …
