The Return Of Great-Power Competition—Cold War Lessons About Strategic Antisubmarine Warfare And Defense Of Sea Lines Of Communication, Bradford Dismukes
The Return Of Great-Power Competition—Cold War Lessons About Strategic Antisubmarine Warfare And Defense Of Sea Lines Of Communication, Bradford Dismukes
Naval War College Review
American Cold War planning experienced important failures in strategic intelligence and in the way planners used that intelligence. These shortcomings were overcome through massive material investment, technological advantage, and good fortune, but in the twenty-first-century era of great-power competition the Navy cannot count on these advantages. More-careful and better-integrated intelligence-planning processes would improve our chances of success greatly.

Establishment Of A Serological Panel For In Vitro Diagnostics Of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, D.-Y. Wang, K.-T. Wang, Y.-C. Wang, S.-C. Weng, W.-H. Chang, D.Y.-C. Shih
Journal of Food and Drug Analysis
Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is an infectious disease with a high mortality rate. Because SARS suddenly disappeared after an approximately 1-year-long pandemic period (November 2002 to July 2003), insufficient data was available for the development of in vitro diagnostics for SARS (SARS IVD). To rapidly identify cases in the event of future epidemics, it is necessary to establish a SARS serological panel. In this study, 20 SARS convalescent sera and 20 normal sera from the Taiwan CDC were used to establish a SARS serological panel. This can be used as a standard for the Taiwan FDA to evaluate the …

Preliminary Analyses Of Phenolic Compounds And Antioxidant Activities In Tea Pollen Extracts, Y.-T. Kao, M.-J. Lu, C. Chen
Journal of Food and Drug Analysis
Tea (Camellia sinensis) pollen is one of the main bee-collected pollen staples in Taiwan. We analyzed the contents of the phenolic compounds (total phenols, flavonoids, free aglycones of flavonoid and phenolic acids) in tea pollen, obtained by aqueous extraction (cold and hot water) or ethanolic extraction (50% EE and 95% EE). The antioxidant activity, capacity of scavenging H 2O 2, and chelating ability were measured. Nine phenolic compounds, including gallic acid, catechin, methyl gallate, caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, rutin, myricetin, and chlorogenic acid, were identified and quantified, while gallic acid (0.69 ± 0.01 to 2.55 ± 0.05 mg/g) …

The Concept And Utilization Of Swastika ‘Hooked Cross’ On Islamic Artefacts, Dr.Boussy Zidan
The Concept And Utilization Of Swastika ‘Hooked Cross’ On Islamic Artefacts, Dr.Boussy Zidan
Journal of the General Union of Arab Archaeologists
(En) Swastika’ is an equilateral hooked cross, it is one of the symbols that became popular to several nations of different cultures since prehistoric times. This symbol was associated, or rather, became symbol for some religious beliefs and spiritual concepts in some ancient civilizations. It has been extensively transmitted among several nations. Such prevalence proves the popularity that hooked cross ‘Swastika’ had attained, however, this caused the difficulty in determining its place of origin. Some historical studies suggested India as ‘Swastika’s’ homeland by the end of the Bronze Age, since it was predominantly a religious symbol of Hindus, Jains, and …
The Cryptographic Cartouche Of Nectanebo Ii From The Great Temple Of Pr-Bastt, Mohamed Elbayoumi
The Cryptographic Cartouche Of Nectanebo Ii From The Great Temple Of Pr-Bastt, Mohamed Elbayoumi
Journal of the General Union of Arab Archaeologists
(En) Rosenow refers to unusual cartouches discovered in the "Nectanebo II" temple at "Tell Basta" written in cryptographic form, and suggests that these cartouches may be for Nectanebo "Nxt-Hr-Hbt-mry-In-Hr-sA-BAstt".([1])However, the deities onto these cartouches are not the same. This notice attracted my attention to study these cartouches and other fragments that were found in the same area, comparing them with others belonging to the same king. Thus, the aim of this paper is to introduce the cryptography system([2]) that was used in writing these unique cartouches. Through this writing system, the paper interprets the religious and …

The Rock Art Of The Saharan Atlas (Algeria): A Spatial Analysis Essay, Dr. Merouane Rabhi, Mr. Hocine Bellahreche Bellahreche
Journal of the General Union of Arab Archaeologists
(En) Rock art represents one of the most important archaeological remains in the Algerian Saharan Atlas. The various classical attempts for its study and interpretation led to the proposal of a methodological framework based on the description and classification of this archaeological record in chronological stages. The spatial distribution of rock art in the landscape as well as the related geographical context required the application of new and innovative approaches such as spatial archaeology and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The main goals of this paper are to illustrate the impact of the geographic, topographic and the environmental context on these …

The Sacredness Of Some Seals And Its Relationship To God Thoth, Dr.Hayam Hafez Rawash
The Sacredness Of Some Seals And Its Relationship To God Thoth, Dr.Hayam Hafez Rawash
Journal of the General Union of Arab Archaeologists
( En ) Seals played an important role in ancient Egypt. They were not only used as administrative securing devices for the state bureaucracy, private individual, documents, containers, places, but also as amulets during daily life and in the netherworld. There are some features confirmed the sacredness of seals such as:
•Seals as devices of protection.
•The crime of breaking the seal.
•The seal and sacredness of the place.
•The sacredness of the process of sealing.
Beside the sacredness of seals, there are some texts confirmed the relationship between seals and the god Thoth, the relationship …
The Refusal Of Minting Ottoman Silver Para Multiples In Egypt As A Reflection Of The Political Relation With The Ottoman Sultanate, Eman Mahmoud Arafa
The Refusal Of Minting Ottoman Silver Para Multiples In Egypt As A Reflection Of The Political Relation With The Ottoman Sultanate, Eman Mahmoud Arafa
Journal of the General Union of Arab Archaeologists
( En ) During the Ottoman reign in Egypt (918-1222 A.H/1520-1807A.D), while the mint of Istanbul –the capital of the Ottoman Sultanate- was responsible for minting the multiples of the Para, Egypt refused to follow this coinage tradition, despite the fact that it was a state of the Ottoman Empire. This practice on behalf of Egypt reflects some important political events that may show the concealed reaction of refusal and opposition to the Ottoman reign in being against minting through the silver coins as a secondary coin, and not through the golden coins which were the essential ones. In addition, …

Understanding the likely future impacts of biological invasions is crucial yet highly challenging given the multiple relevant environmental, socio‐economic and societal contexts and drivers. In the absence of quantitative models, methods based on expert knowledge are the best option for assessing future invasion trajectories. Here, we present an expert assessment of the drivers of potential alien species impacts under contrasting scenarios and socioecological contexts through the mid‐21st century. Based on responses from 36 experts in biological invasions, moderate (20%–30%) increases in invasions, compared to the current conditions, are expected to cause major impacts on biodiversity in most socioecological contexts. Three …
Nubians Of Plutonia: Black Women In Modern Post-Apocalyptic And Dystopian Graphic Literature, Marthia D. Fuller
Nubians Of Plutonia: Black Women In Modern Post-Apocalyptic And Dystopian Graphic Literature, Marthia D. Fuller
American Studies ETDs
This dissertation explores the deployment of race and gender in comic books and graphic novels, paying close attention to how Black womanhood and girlhood operates in the speculative future. This project suggests that the framing of black womanhood and girlhood in post-apocalyptic/dystopian spaces provide a counter to the normative notions of both while simultaneously using normative tropes of Black womanhood and girlhood to produce new ways of understanding Black femininity in the future. Nubians of Plutonia use Black feminist cultural criticisms, Black popular culture, and visual culture to ask: does graphic literature present new, more dynamic understandings of race and …

Effect And Feasibility Of District Level Scale Up Of Maternal, Newborn And Child Health Interventions In Pakistan: A Quasi-Experimental Study, Zahid Memon, Shah Muhammad, Sajid Bashir Soofi, Nimra Khan, Nadia Akseer, Atif Habib, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta
Woman and Child Health
Introduction: Pakistan has a high burden of maternal, newborn and child morbidity and mortality. Several factors including weak scale-up of evidence-based interventions within the existing health system; lack of community awareness regarding health conditions; and poverty contribute to poor outcomes. Deaths and morbidity are largely preventable if a combination of community and facility-based interventions are rolled out at scale.
Methods and analysis: Umeed-e-Nau (UeN) (New Hope) project aims is to improve maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) in eight high-burden districts of Pakistan by scaling up of evidence-based interventions. The project will assess interventions focused on, first, improving the quality …

Determination Of The Summer Origins Of American Kestrels ( Falco Sparverius ) Wintering In Northern And Central Illinois, Taylor P. Joray
Theses and Dissertations
The seasonal and interannual movements of the American Kestrel (Falco sparverius) are not fully understood. Although one of the most widespread and abundant raptors found in North America, information on where many populations summer and overwinter is lacking. We used stable hydrogen isotope values obtained from feathers (δ2Hf) of known origin to create age-specific calibration functions for juvenile and adult American Kestrels. We then used these calibration functions to determine the most likely summer origins of the American Kestrels that wintered in northern and central Illinois during 2015-16, classified these individuals as year-round residents or wintering migrants, and validated these …

Contesting Historical Enchantment: Militarized Settler Colonialism And Refugee Resettlement In New Mexico, Christina Juhász-Wood
Contesting Historical Enchantment: Militarized Settler Colonialism And Refugee Resettlement In New Mexico, Christina Juhász-Wood
American Studies ETDs
This dissertation provides an interdisciplinary critical study of refugee resettlement to Albuquerque, New Mexico. I argue that refugee resettlement to the United States cannot be understood separately from the ongoing structure of settler colonialism. I analyze Albuquerque’s post-WWII militarized settlement as a settler colonial process of extraction and suburbanization that depended on Native labor and resources to fuel the growing nuclear weapons program. Albuquerque’s Kirtland Air Force Base played a role not only in displacing and thus producing refugees during the Vietnam War but also in marking Albuquerque as a distinctly militarized geography to which they were resettled. Thousands of …

For seven years, students from Smoky Mountain High School in Sylva, NC have worked with history faculty at Western Carolina University on the Mountain People, Mountain Lives Oral History Project. They have listened to and recorded the stories of longtime residents, recent immigrants, African Americans, Latinos, politicians, nurses, preachers, teachers, veterans, entertainers, activists, old farmers, and young professional athletes. These men and women tell of migrations, great and small, that took people to and away from Appalachia and across the world. They describe the global, local, and personal resonance of the modern civil rights movement. They explain how long-standing struggles …
After Forty Years Of Antitrust Revision And Apple Inc. V. Pepper, What Now Illinois Brick?, Jeffrey L. Harrison
After Forty Years Of Antitrust Revision And Apple Inc. V. Pepper, What Now Illinois Brick?, Jeffrey L. Harrison
William & Mary Business Law Review
Nineteen seventy-seven was a paradigm-shifting year in antitrust law. Decisions by the Supreme Court greatly limited the type of parties who could successfully bring antitrust actions and what types of activities would violate the antitrust laws. First, in January of that year, the Court, in Brunswick v. Pueblo Bowl-O-Mat, ruled that to mount a case the plaintiff had to have suffered an antitrust injury. In other words, even if the antitrust laws were violated, the party raising the issue had to have suffered the type of harm the laws were designed to avoid. Then in a fourteen day span …

Does Social Trust Affect International Contracting? Evidence From Foreign Bond Covenants, Paul Brockman, Sadok El Ghoul, Omrane Guedhami, Ying Zheng
Finance Department Faculty Journal Articles
Building on rational choice institutionalism theory and Williamson’s (J Econ Lit 38(3): 595–613, 2000) four-level social analysis framework, we investigate the influence of the informal institution of social trust on debt contract design in an international setting. Using a sample of non-U.S. firms that issue bonds in the U.S. debt market, we find that Yankee bond creditors impose fewer covenants on bond issuers domiciled in countries with a high degree of social trust. We further show that the inverse relationship between debt covenants and the informal institution of social trust is more pronounced for firms from countries with weak formal …
The Persistence Of Indigenous Markets In Mexico's 'Supermarket Revolution', Diana Christina Denham
The Persistence Of Indigenous Markets In Mexico's 'Supermarket Revolution', Diana Christina Denham
Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation research investigates the paradoxical survival of Indigenous markets in the context of state-sponsored development strategies that privilege multinational retailers and rebrand Mexican cities as modern and globally competitive. I examine how Indigenous markets have survived the supermarketization (and, more precisely, Walmartization) of food retail that has taken hold in Mexico. Better known by their Nahuatl name tianguis, open-air Indigenous markets held in streets and public plazas predate the arrival of the first conquistadors and remain common across Mesoamerica today. My examination of tianguis in native language texts, colonial narratives, popular art, and mid-20th century newspapers demonstrates that …

The Magic Of Love: Love Magic In Medieval Romance, Dalicia Raymond
The Magic Of Love: Love Magic In Medieval Romance, Dalicia Raymond
English Language and Literature ETDs
This project examines authorial representations of the morality of three functions of love magic: to induce, to disrupt, and to facilitate love in twelfth- through fifteenth-century Middle High German, Old French, and Middle English romances. Using a cultural studies approach with close textual analysis and informed by gender studies, it investigates medieval romance authors’ discomfort with love inducing magic and asserts that this discomfort is a response to the magic’s violation of free will, a central tenet of medieval theology. I find that authors condemn love inducing magic but mark specific instances acceptable through explicit clarification of divine approval. Love …

Soil-test biological activity (STBA) is a key indicator describing the functions of soil to catabolize organic amendments, promote soil organic C sequestration, and cycle nutrients. We explored how climatic zone, land use, and physiographic region affected the relationship of STBA with several soil fertility properties and processes. Soils from Georgia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia (wet climate) were Aquults, Fluvents, Udalfs, Udepts, and Udults and soils from Nebraska and Oklahoma (dry climate) were Udolls and Ustolls. Annual cropland and perennial pasture were the land uses. The Prairie region had silt loam and silty clay loams, the Ridge–Valley region had silt …
Post-World War Ii Education Reform In Japan, Susy Ong
Post-World War Ii Education Reform In Japan, Susy Ong
Journal of Strategic and Global Studies
The rise of Japan after the defeat in World War II became the center of world admiration, including us in Indonesia. Human resources development through education has become the main key to the success of Japan. This certainly can be a reference for us in formulating human resources development policies in the future. We often feel amazed at the seriousness of the Japanese government in dealing with education problems. However, we also tend to ignore various facts related to it. For example, after the defeat of the war, Japanese academics and bureaucrats immediately conducted introspection and research to find out …
