Assessing Community Needs: City Of Toledo And Lucas County, Ohio, Jim Robey, Stephen Biddle, Don Edgerly, Marie Holler, Brian Pittelko, Claudette Robey, Kathleen Bolter, Tom Schorgl
Reports
At the core of issues in Lucas County and, in particular, the City of Toledo is poverty. While this does not necessarily provide an “Aha!” moment, current conditions that contribute to being economically disadvantaged in many areas of the city and county affect not only current residents but will also affect future residents—without meaningful and targeted interventions. It is beyond the scope of the Toledo Community Foundation, or any single institution for that matter, to unilaterally address the range of issues presented in this study. Remedying these issues must be accomplished through the coordination and leveraging of resources, including public, …

Preventive Care And Chronic Disease Management: Comparison Of Appalachian And Non-Appalachian Community Health Centers In The United States, Julie P. Marcinek, Alek Sripipatana, Sue C. Lin
Journal of Appalachian Health
Introduction: The Appalachian region is often characterized by poor health outcomes and economic depression. Health centers (HCs) are community-based and patient-directed organizations that deliver comprehensive, culturally competent, high-quality primary healthcare services in high need areas, including Appalachia, where economic, geographic, or cultural factors can hinder access to healthcare services.
Purpose: The study compares the clinical quality performance in preventive care and chronic disease management between Appalachian HCs and their non-Appalachian counterparts.
Methods: Using 2015 Uniform Data System (UDS) health center data, bivariate and multivariate linear regression analyses examine the association of Appalachian HC with performance on preventive and chronic care …
Undergraduate Student Experiences Of Publishing Biomechanics Research, Stuart A. Mcerlain-Naylor
Undergraduate Student Experiences Of Publishing Biomechanics Research, Stuart A. Mcerlain-Naylor
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The aim of this study was to investigate student experiences of publishing undergraduate research in biomechanics. Twenty-five individuals with experience of publishing peer-reviewed undergraduate biomechanics research completed an online survey regarding their perceived benefits and their level of involvement in various aspects of the research process. Areas of the greatest and least perceived benefits and student involvement were identified. Correlations suggested numerous beneficial effects of relatively low student involvement, more likely related to the concurrent greater supervisor involvement. Staff should make informed decisions regarding their level of involvement in each aspect of the research process rather than simply focusing on …

Journal of Solution Focused Practices
The Journal of Solution Focused Practices (JSFP) seeks manuscript submissions written with the practitioner in mind. Unfortunately, there are few resources informing authors on how to go about this kind of writing. The authors of this article have brought together resources from various disciplines to create guidelines that are easy to follow and adhere to the submission guidelines for JSFP. We also explore ways one can make a manuscript more relevant to an international audience and include tips for writing well.

Using Multi-Sensory And Multi-Dimensional Immersive Virtual Reality In Participatory Planning, Mahbubur Meenar, Jennifer L. Kitson
School of Earth & Environment Departmental Research
In the last two decades, urban planners have embraced digital technologies to complement traditional public participation processes; research on the impact of smarter digital instruments, such as immersive virtual reality (IVR), however, is scant. We recruited 40 focus group participants to explore various formats of spatial planning scenario simulations in Glassboro, NJ, USA. Our study finds that the level of participation, memory recalls of scenarios, and emotional responses to design proposals are higher with multi-sensory and multi-dimensional IVR simulations than with standard presentations such as 2D videos of 3D model simulations, coupled with verbal presentations. We also discuss the limitations …

Observational networks enhance real‐time situational awareness for emergency and water resource management during extreme weather events. We present examples of how a diverse, multitiered observational network in California provided insights into hydrometeorological processes and impacts during a 3‐day atmospheric river storm centered on 14 February 2019. This network, which has been developed over the past two decades, aims to improve understanding and mitigation of effects from extreme storms influencing water resources and natural hazards. We combine atmospheric reanalysis output and additional observations to show how the network allows: (1) the validation of record cool season precipitable water observations over southern …

The United States faces a hypercompetitive geopolitical landscape in the Indo-Pacific region, arguably the most consequential theater for US national interests over the coming decades. Although the United States has created exquisite military capabilities to counter insurgencies and fight terrorists, rivals like China have developed a whole-of-government toolkit focused on expanding their span of control and freedom of action, separating the United States from its allies, and deterring US leaders from greater engagement in East Asia.
China is actively transforming its military forces, with an eye toward defeating the United States in the event of armed hostilities. The People’s Republic …
Behavioral Response To High Temperatures In A Desert Grassland Bird: Use Of Shrubs As Thermal Refugia, Janet M. Ruth, William A. Talbot, Eric Krabbe Smith
Behavioral Response To High Temperatures In A Desert Grassland Bird: Use Of Shrubs As Thermal Refugia, Janet M. Ruth, William A. Talbot, Eric Krabbe Smith
Western North American Naturalist
Birds inhabiting hot, arid ecosystems contend with trade-offs between heat dissipation and water conservation. As temperatures increase, passerines engage in various behaviors to reduce exposure to heat, solar radiation and insolation, and reradiation of heat from the ground. These responses to rising temperatures may result in subordination of reproductive urgency or nutrient acquisition to the need for thermoregulation. During studies on Arizona Grasshopper Sparrow (Ammodramus savannarum ammolegus) life history and ecology, we noted that these sparrows abandoned territoriality and foraging behaviors under certain circumstances in favor of cooler microsites. In this paper we document the extreme temperatures to …

Using Audio Processing To Determine Disease Spread, Ajit Narayanan
Defensive Publications Series
During epidemics and at other times, it is important for public health officials, individuals, and other entities to make health-related decisions based on sound epidemiological statistics. Such statistics are today generated only when individuals voluntarily seek medical treatment. Diseases that are contagious but initially asymptomatic can spread rapidly through vulnerable populations with little warning. Due to the initial mildness of symptoms, individuals may not realize that they have a dangerous infection and may fail to approach medical professionals for treatment or diagnosis.
This disclosure describes techniques that can leverage sensors, networks, and consumer electronic devices to determine a fine-grained estimate …

Gender, Caste And Movement: Lessons From Sangtin Yatra, Richa Nagar
Study of Women, Gender, & Sexuality: Faculty Publications
This essay draws on ongoing translations of, and reflections on, journeys undertaken since 2002 with members of Sangtin in Uttar Pradesh. Sangtin, originally imagined as an NGO, has steadily evolved into Sangtin Kisan Mazdoor Sangathan (SKMS), a largely women-led movement of 8000 small farmers and laborers, most of them identifying as Dalit. SKMS emerged from encounters with NGOs, academ- ics, and artists whose fixed understandings of ‘feminism’ often failed to recognize that empowering women in isola- tion from the rest of their communities was not sustainable empowerment. Over the eighteen years of battling on this terrain for their rights, dignity, …
Perceptions Of Police Use Of Force At The Intersection Of Race And Pregnancy, Emma Elizabeth Lee Money
Perceptions Of Police Use Of Force At The Intersection Of Race And Pregnancy, Emma Elizabeth Lee Money
Dissertations and Theses
Attention surrounding forceful policing largely focuses on men's experiences, but Black women, even when pregnant, are also harmed by police use of force. Previous research demonstrating anti-Black biases in perceptions of police use of force toward men cannot be directly applied towards women, due to unique stereotypes of Black women and mothers. How do race and pregnancy influence perceptions of police use of force against women? It was expected that pregnancy would elicit more positive responses in the current study, but only when pregnant women were also White. Benevolent sexism (BS) and social dominance orientation (SDO) were tested as moderators …

“Pre-Packaged Sovereignty”: The Fallacy Of Indian Self-Determination In The Bureau Of Indian Affairs (Bia) Tribal Social Services Programs, April Kateri Chavez
American Studies ETDs
This thesis examines the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) tribal social services programs in New Mexico Native reservation communities. I rely on interviews with current/former BIA social workers and administrators to contextualize my analysis, while revealing the limits of existing social work scholarship and offering recommendations for future scholarship and community work. Using critical Indigenous studies and feminisms along with critical social work, I advance two primary arguments. The first is, despite the so-called self-determination era, the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) functions as a settler colonial administration that diminishes tribal sovereignty and perpetuates racist and gendered violence. The capacity …

Despite the depth of research on leaders and leadership in the Western and Asian contexts, the study of leadership in the African context remains at a nascent stage. In this special issue, we take a multilevel perspective to review and synthesize current research on leadership in Africa in three distinct scholarly domains (Organizational Behavior & Human Resources (OB/HR), Strategy and Entrepreneurship). Based on this review, we offer specific recommendations to advance leadership research and improve the scope and rigor of theoretical and methodological approaches. Finally, we present three scholarly works that highlight the distinctive nature of leadership in Africa, including …
Trespassing And Transcending: Newcomer Crossing And Movement In Latina And Latin American Literature, Marina C. Todeschini
Trespassing And Transcending: Newcomer Crossing And Movement In Latina And Latin American Literature, Marina C. Todeschini
Spanish and Portuguese ETDs
In times when walls are raised and human diversity condemned, stories that present the free urban movement of marginalized characters become political. While the system excludes the brown/black newcomer bodies and restricted them to the margins, the texts analyzed here bring these bodies to the center, claiming their active role in the construction of the urban fabric. This way, Latin American and Latina authors are contesting the idea of citizenship and the right to the city of newcomer subjects by narrating the freedom of geographic and symbolic movement of often disenfranchised peoples. This dissertation analyzes the claims to urban rights …
On Love And Treason: Critical White Feminist Thought For Social Justice Praxis, Amanda Joyce Parker
On Love And Treason: Critical White Feminist Thought For Social Justice Praxis, Amanda Joyce Parker
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
This dissertation is a theoretical piece that examines the positionality of white women in upholding white supremacy and a framework for critical white feminist thought that will move white women toward a self-reflexive and self-implicating praxis. A white matriarchy (Parker, 2018) is fully conceptualized as part of a powerful subsystem that operates under white supremacy. Concepts, such as a race-gender bribe and white women’s negative solidarity (Combahee River Collective, 1977), are exposed and discussed as part of the workings of white matriarchy. White emotionality (Matias, 2015), intergenerational whiteness, and antiracist parenting are also analyzed. I also suggest possibilities for resistance …

Investigation Of Zn, Cu, Cd And Hg Concentrations In The Oyster Of Chi-Ku, Tai-Shi And Tapeng Bay, Southwestern Taiwan, C.-Y. Chen, M.-H. Chen
Journal of Food and Drug Analysis
Metal concentrations in oyster, Crassostrea gigas, were investigated using 155 samples collected seasonally during 1996-2001 from the Chi-ku, Tai-shi, and Tapeng Bay areas in southwestern Taiwan. Seasonal variations as well as site difference were identified in the metal concentrations. The metal concentrations of oyster in Southwestern Taiwan indicated a typical seasonal pattern of "winterspring maximum" and "summer minimum". Among the three sites, Zn, Cu and Cd contents were found to be the highest in the March sample from Tai-shi, whereas Hg level was found to be the highest in the January sample from Chi-ku. The overall mean concentrations of Zn, …

Journal of Food and Drug Analysis
Significant variations in the frequency of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of human leukocyte antigen among Taiwan's aboriginal tribes and high homogeneity within each tribe have been reported. To identify variations in genetic polymorphisms of drug-metabolizing enzyme in seven of Taiwan's ethnic groups, the SNPs of N-acetyl transferase 2, a conjugation enzyme in phase II metabolism, were investigated. Methods: Three SNPs of NAT2, NAT2*5, NAT2*6, and NAT2*7, were determined by the TaqMan® method and subsequently confirmed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Our results showed statistically significant variations in the frequency of NAT2 genotype categories according to the 3 …

Molecular Authentication Of Chinese Herbal Materials, Y.-B. Zhang, P.-C. Shaw, C.-W. Sze, Z.-T. Wang, Y. Tong
Journal of Food and Drug Analysis
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been playing a major role in health care in China for millennia. Accurate authentication is always necessary to prevent the target herbs from intentional and inadvertent adulteration with other plant species. Morphological and histological authentication is now commonly practiced but they are not precise enough to authenticate those herbs which are possibly substituted or adulterated by plants with similar shapes and tissue constructs. Ordinary chemical authentication was also introduced to TCM but it is often not reliable enough to produce easy-to-interpret results. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a more effective, accurate, reliable and sensitive …

Near Infrared Spectroscopic Determination Of Olive Oil Adulteration With Sunflower And Corn Oil, D. Özdemir, B. Öztürk
Journal of Food and Drug Analysis
Determination of authenticity of extra virgin olive oils has become very important in recent years due to the increasing public concerns about possible adulterations with relatively cheap vegetable oils such as sunflower oil. This study was focused on the application of near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy in conjunction with multivariate calibration to identify the adulteration of olive oils. NIR transmittance measurements were made on pure olive oil and olive oil adulterated with varying concentrations (4-96%, v/v) of sunflower and corn oil in two sets of 26 binary and ternary mixtures. Multivariate calibration models were generated using genetic inverse least squares (GILS) …
