An Understanding Of Prisons, Race, And Class In The United States, Seth Ketchum

Honors Projects

After a summer of protests sparked by police brutality, the United States remains divided on this most important issue. This paper will seek to contextualize this country’s situation to explain that these protests stem from a history of inequality, in order to argue against claims that the protests are unjustified. With a multidisciplinary approach, we can begin to observe just how unequal this country is and understand what drives so many people to protest during the middle of a global pandemic.

It Takes A Village: Engaging Families To Support Student Transitioning Into A New School, Michael R. Hutchins Dec 2020

It Takes A Village: Engaging Families To Support Student Transitioning Into A New School, Michael R. Hutchins

Counselor Education Capstones

Students face many barriers throughout their education and school transitions have always been a significant challenge for many. Moving to a new school always comes with a host of challenges whether you are moving into kindergarten as a 5-year old or moving to a four-year university as an 18-year old. Schools attempt many different interventions at each of these levels but one common theme, that transcends through a student’s entire journey and increases the chances of a success, is engaging families throughout its entirety. Parents are typically much more involved in a student’s earlier years of school, typically elementary school, …

Investigating Dose-Dependent, Multi-Generational, And Strain-Specific Effects Of 17Α-Ethynylestradiol Exposure In Zebrafish (Danio Rerio), Decatur Mitochondria Foster Dec 2020

Investigating Dose-Dependent, Multi-Generational, And Strain-Specific Effects Of 17Α-Ethynylestradiol Exposure In Zebrafish (Danio Rerio), Decatur Mitochondria Foster

Dissertations and Theses

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) pose a threat to biodiversity at the individual, population, and ecosystem level, as they can interfere with processes that are responsible for regulating metabolism, development, behavior, and reproduction in living organisms. 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2) is a synthetic estrogen and EDC utilized in pharmaceutical and livestock industries, and contaminates waterways worldwide. This research explores the effects of dose-dependent and multi-generational exposure of EE2 in three strains of zebrafish. High dose (10-25 ng/L EE2) exposure led to complete reproductive failure, as well as significantly decreased survival and growth. A period in clean water (depuration) after exposure allowed for some …

Pandemic Vibrio Cholerae Shuts Down Site-Specific Recombination To Retain An Interbacterial Defence Mechanism, Francis J. Santoriello, Lina Michel, Daniel Unterweger, Stefan Pukatzki Dec 2020

Pandemic Vibrio Cholerae Shuts Down Site-Specific Recombination To Retain An Interbacterial Defence Mechanism, Francis J. Santoriello, Lina Michel, Daniel Unterweger, Stefan Pukatzki

Publications and Research

Vibrio cholerae is an aquatic microbe that can be divided into three subtypes: harmless environmental strains, localised pathogenic strains, and pandemic strains causing global cholera outbreaks. Each type has a contact-dependent type VI secretion system (T6SS) that kills neighbouring competitors by translocating unique toxic effector proteins. Pandemic isolates possess identical effectors, indicating that T6SS effectors may affect pandemicity. Here, we show that one of the T6SS gene clusters (Aux3) exists in two states: a mobile, prophage-like element in a small subset of environmental strains, and a truncated Aux3 unique to and conserved in pandemic isolates. Environmental Aux3 can be readily …

Varying The Aspect Ratio Of Toroidal Ion Traps: Implications For Design, Performance, And Miniaturization, Praneeth Madushan Hettikankanange Dec 2020

Varying The Aspect Ratio Of Toroidal Ion Traps: Implications For Design, Performance, And Miniaturization, Praneeth Madushan Hettikankanange

Theses and Dissertations

A large aspect ratio leads to higher ion capacity in miniaturized ion trap mass spectrometers. The aspect ratio (AR) of an ion trap represents the ratio between an extended trapping dimension and the characteristic trapping dimension. In contrast to linear and rectilinear traps, changing the AR of a toroidal ion trap (TorIT) results in changes to the degree of curvature and shape of the trapping potential, and hence, on performance as a mass analyzer. SIMION simulations show that higher-order terms in the trapping potential vary strongly for small and moderate AR values (below ~10), with the effects asymptotically flattening for …

Repetition Of Computer Security Warnings Results In Differential Repetition Suppression Effects As Revealed With Functional Mri, C. Brock Kirwan, Daniel K. Bjornn, Bonnie Brinton Anderson, Anthony Vance, David Eargle, Jeffrey L. Jenkins Dec 2020

Repetition Of Computer Security Warnings Results In Differential Repetition Suppression Effects As Revealed With Functional Mri, C. Brock Kirwan, Daniel K. Bjornn, Bonnie Brinton Anderson, Anthony Vance, David Eargle, Jeffrey L. Jenkins

Faculty Publications

Computer users are often the last line of defense in computer security. However, with repeated exposures to system messages and computer security warnings, neural and behavioral responses show evidence of habituation. Habituation has been demonstrated at a neural level as repetition suppression where responses are attenuated with subsequent repetitions. In the brain, repetition suppression to visual stimuli has been demonstrated in multiple cortical areas, including the occipital lobe and medial temporal lobe. Prior research into the repetition suppression effect has generally focused on a single repetition and has not examined the pattern of signal suppression with repeated exposures. We used …

Standardized Bedside Report During The Transfer Of Care, Lauryn Fanning-Goff Dec 2020

Standardized Bedside Report During The Transfer Of Care, Lauryn Fanning-Goff

MSN Capstone Projects

Optimization of our communication processes can prevent multiple adverse/sentinel events that will also prevent the organization from potentially being held liable to cover those costs. The use of a standardized form of handoff is supported by literature as a way to ensure critical information is not omitted. Completing the report at bedside allows the patient and family to be involved in care, improve patient safety, and enhance patient satisfaction scores (Baldwin & Spears, 2019). Because of this, the PICOT question is: “In staff nurses on a pediatric surgical unit (P), how would a standardized bedside report during the transfer of …

Eating disorders are prevalent in Western society and are highly influenced by body dissatisfaction and disordered eating patterns. Disordered eating refers to unhealthy behaviors used to control and influence weight with the potential to become eating disorders. Eating disorders can lead to or further accelerate both physical and emotional damage. As such, it is important to determine possible contributing factors to decrease negative outcomes. Because parents are typically the primary caretakers of children, it is necessary for nurse practitioners (NPs) to know how to best educate parents in the prevention of eating disorders in their children. This clinical paper provides …

Invest In Sustainable Supply Chains, Nada Elmasry Dec 2020

Invest In Sustainable Supply Chains, Nada Elmasry

Student Works

In recent years, the word “sustainability” has become a buzzword that businesses use to describe their organization’s strategy. Expectations for the products and services that consumers buy have increased. Consumers used to pick their products based on quality, cost, and brand. Consumers now expect businesses to implement sustainable measures that create a small environmental footprint. One way organizations are doing this is by investing in sustainable supply chains.
