Methods Of A Narrative Inquirist: Storying The Endured Teacher Identity, Taylor A. Norman Jan 2020

Methods Of A Narrative Inquirist: Storying The Endured Teacher Identity, Taylor A. Norman

Middle Grades & Secondary Education: Faculty Publications

While I was a young English language arts teacher, my teacher identity matured in a nurturing environment cultivated by my veteran colleagues. Finding that this is not the common narrative told by beginning teachers (Alsup, 2019, 2006; Danielewicz, 2001), I wondered what impact sharing the stories of my veteran colleagues could have on young teachers. The purpose of this paper is to explain why narrative inquiry fit the parameters of this particular inquiry, what methods were utilized and how the project was constructed. Like Spector-Mersel (2011), I intend to describe my use of narrative inquiry to expand its conceptual and …

Child Naming Practice And Changing Trends In Modern Japan, Noriko Mori-Kolbe

The Coastal Review

Given name is a cultural component that reflects family life. The present study is a literature-based research on newborn baby naming practice in Japan from 1912-2018. Based on existing literatures on naming, examples and surveys on given names, an overview of a naming pattern in Japan is presented and discussed within a sociocultural framework. Historical observations of baby names include popular female and male names and their recent trends. The study also shows that in Japan computerization has changed learning method, information transmission method and communication modes, and that digital natives name their children in different ways than older generations.

Challenges 1to Building Synergy Between Indigenous Knowledge And Academic Libraries In Ghana, Florence Dedzoe-Dzokotoe Plockey Mrs., Charlotte Yembil, Banleman Konlan

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Literature on libraries in Africa have tended to focus on changing from oral culture to a written one. This article focus on the indigenous knowledge traditions and academic libraries to unveil emerging forms that forge complementarities as a basis for building synergy. The paper support the argument that academic libraries are critical contributors to knowledge generation/production. However, researchers further accords a similar role for Indigenous Knowledge (IK) and its producers. Thus, the IK community becomes a critical player rather than mere beneficiaries of knowledge production. They are essential collaborators in the production of a decolonized, inclusive and functional knowledge system. …

Rhetorical And Musical Synthesis And The Strategies For Inter-Generational Resonance In Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, Kiara Wiedman Jan 2020

Rhetorical And Musical Synthesis And The Strategies For Inter-Generational Resonance In Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, Kiara Wiedman

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

This study critically examines the popular rock anthem Bohemian Rhapsody to understand why the song has remained a lasting and eminently compelling standard for the progressive rock genre and why it has appealed through an inter-generational scope. Through the use of Close Textual Analysis (CTA), with an emphasis on metaphoric criticism, combined with Music Analysis of the score using popular song analysis tools, this study deconstructs the song and uncovered rhetorical strategies of the music and the lyrics as they function separately. In the conclusion, the two methodological approaches are synthesized to reveal the intertextual interanimation of the music and …

The Meanings And Ways Of Parental Involvement Among Low-Income Filipinos, Aileen Garcia, Maria Rosario De Guzman Jan 2020

The Meanings And Ways Of Parental Involvement Among Low-Income Filipinos, Aileen Garcia, Maria Rosario De Guzman

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Parental involvement in children’s education is an integral component of young children’s academic achievement. Although there is clear evidence regarding the benefits of parental involvement, little is known regarding its impacts, manifestations, and conceptualizations in non-Western societies. Given that parenting and child rearing are imbued with cultural meaning in many profound ways (Super & Harkness,1986), this study employed a phenomenological approach and used pakikipagkwentuhan, a data collection procedure drawn from indigenous Filipino Psychology to closely examine how low-income Filipino parents conceptualize parental involvement and its role in their children’s education. Thirty-one parents/caregivers were engaged in conversation and qualitative data …

Dispositional, Place Perceptions, And Imagination: The Interactive Network Of Authenticity, Ying Chao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The purposes of this dissertation are threefold: to define and operationalize different types of authenticity, to test the interactive network of different types of authenticity, and to test the relationships between authenticity and tourist outcome variables including transformation, place attachment, and loyalty. In psychology, authenticity is typically conceptualized to be subject-based in nature, referring to a person's state of being true to oneself across contexts and against external influences. This type of authenticity has been termed "dispositional authenticity" and operationalized in this study in dimensions of authentic living, accepting external influence, and self-alienation. In tourism, authenticity is usually considered to …

"A Video Of Myself Helps Me Learn": A Scoping Review Of The Evidence Of Video-Making For Situated Learning, Iris Epstein, Melanie Baljko Dr, Kurt Thumlert, Evadne Kelly, James Andrew Smith, Yelin Su, Justeena Zaki-Azat, Natasha M. May

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Nursing, dance and studio-based arts, engineering, and athletic therapy are viewed as practice-oriented professions in which the teaching and situated learning of practical skills are central. In order to succeed, students must perform a series of performance-based assessments, which seemingly require an “able” body to enact complex tasks in situated and/or simulation-based contexts (for example, “safe nursing practice”). Our interdisciplinary research seeks to intervene within the culture of professional learning by investigating what we know about the use of smartphone video recording for situated, practice-based learning, and for supporting interactive video-based assessment as a means of accommodation and extending access …

Experiences With Machismo And Pain: Latino Veterans, Roberto Cancio Jan 2020

Experiences With Machismo And Pain: Latino Veterans, Roberto Cancio

Sociology Faculty Works

Physical and emotional pain from combat-related injuries and experiences are serious problems among Latino veterans. This study fleshes out existing cultural constructs and concepts (e.g., machismo and familism) from the participants’ point of view and may serve as an important step in unraveling the influence of Latino culture on pain, providing a deeper and more critical theorization between masculinity, race/ethnicity, and the military. Using 26 interviews from U.S.-born Latino veterans, this study analyzes the meanings and experiences of pain from combat, masculinity, and how culture affects expressions of pain. The following themes emerged: (a) Latino culture and ethnicity, (b) machismo …

Thinking With Christian Existentialism: Freedom In Burke’S Logology And Berdyaev’S Dostoevsky, Steven J. Mailloux Jan 2020

Thinking With Christian Existentialism: Freedom In Burke’S Logology And Berdyaev’S Dostoevsky, Steven J. Mailloux

English Faculty Works

Kenneth Burke’s logology is a way of thinking about how to understand the use of language—what he calls “symbolic action”—and how to use language to make sense of various human practices, including interpretive acts. This is a dialectic in thought between rhetoric as language-use and interpretation as making-sense. In The Rhetoric of Religion Burke’s theotropic logology uses theology to interpret symbolic action and symbolic action to interpret theology. Burke extends to other interpretive projects this same rhetorical-hermeneutic strategy of analogically translating words from one domain into another, from one meaning into another. This strategy is one way Burke thinks with …

The Relationship Between Intensity Of Fitness Tracker Usage And Motivation, Rachel Cannata, Abigail C. Daugherty, Madison O. Dirocco, Julianne Green, Pial Dasgupta

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Many college students engage in unhealthy behaviors which may contribute to diseases. Additionally, some students may lack motivation to rectify these behaviors to improve their long-term health. This study assessed the relationship between intensity of fitness tracker usage and motivation among health professions students at a large, public Midwestern university. This non-experimental, correlational study used convenience sampling and a theoretical framework based on Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory. Online recruitment announcements were emailed and included links to the consent form and survey. Motivation was measured with Deci and Ryan’s modified self-determination tool. Intensity of tracker usage was measured using a scale …

“We Had Become Trailer People”: Stigma, Social Boundary Making, And The Story Of The American Mobile Home Park, Katie M. Founds Jan 2020

“We Had Become Trailer People”: Stigma, Social Boundary Making, And The Story Of The American Mobile Home Park, Katie M. Founds

Theses and Dissertations--Sociology

Mobile homes and mobile home parks—still most often called trailer parks in common vernacular—occupy a particularly stigmatized position in American culture. A symbolic stand-in for a host of social ills, from bad hygiene and broken families to drug use and loose morals, mobile homes offer affordable housing at a social cost, branding their residents as likewise deficient. This piece of material culture did not come into being with such negative meanings attached. The process of becoming a symbol of stigma is an historical one, a story of meaning making in the midst of cultural shifts and changing norms. Since appearing …

Sharing A Place-Based Indigenous Methodology And Learnings, Sandra Wooltorton, Len Collard, Pierre Horwitz, Anne Poelina, David Palmer

Nulungu Journal Articles

Building on a methodology of Cooperative Inquiry, the outcomes of five interconnected place-based learning projects from Australia are synthesised and elaborated in this paper. The methodology can facilitate the everyday living and sharing of an Earth-based consciousness: one that enriches Transformative Sustainability Education (TSE) through recognising meanings and stories in landscape, and celebrates Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing. Indigenous-led environmental education is shown to link with one of the longest continuous environmental education systems in the world and it is contended that because of its ongoing history, environmental education carries a cultural obligation. In Australia, every landscape is …

Delay Discounting And Risky Choice: Meta-Analytic Evidence Regarding Single-Process Theories, Kelli L. Johnson, Michael T. Bixter, Christian C. Luhmann Jan 2020

Delay Discounting And Risky Choice: Meta-Analytic Evidence Regarding Single-Process Theories, Kelli L. Johnson, Michael T. Bixter, Christian C. Luhmann

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Preferences about delayed rewards and preferences about risk are central to the literature on decision making. Several proposals suggest that such preferences arise from a single process and thus predict strong associations between preferences about delay and risk. Although there is a wealth of data on this association, the evidence is inconclusive; some studies have reported significant associations but many have not. Consequently, it is unclear whether the association between delay preferences and risk preferences is strong enough to support single-process theories. To further explore this question, we took a meta-analytic approach surveying 26 studies totaling 32 effect sizes. Results …

Transcultural Education: Building Understanding Through Architecture, Olivia Mack Jan 2020

Transcultural Education: Building Understanding Through Architecture, Olivia Mack

Architecture Theses

Architecture has the innate ability to control the environment in which it creates, so it presents itself as a tool for creating desired outcomes. This desired outcome is the change of social climate through Transcultural Understanding. With the use of qualitative observation analyses, methods of influencing cultural perception will be studied and applied to the project. Children’s minds are at a malleable state, so creating an educational center which emphasizes activities and interactions to promote inter-cultural interactions can result in transcultural Understanding as a learned social practice.

Colonial Hangover And The Politics Of Space In Kiran Desai’S Inheritance Of Loss, Aparajita Nanda Jan 2020

Colonial Hangover And The Politics Of Space In Kiran Desai’S Inheritance Of Loss, Aparajita Nanda

English

Spatial history has been defined by Nigel Thrift as the merger of space, a term he associates with human geography, with time, a word borrowed from history. This paper analyzes the spatial history at play in Kiran Desai’s The Inheritance of Loss, a novel that ponders on questions of identities flawed by a deep sense of deprivation and loss left by colonization that manifests itself in various forms through generations. It particularly focuses on two characters, Gyan and Biju, whose responses to space are determined by the historical resonance of these places even as they are influenced by other inhabitants …

“I Don't Really Look Very Asian”: Transracially And Transnationally Adopted Asian Youth In Rural Appalachia, Sandra L. Rodeheaver Jan 2020

“I Don't Really Look Very Asian”: Transracially And Transnationally Adopted Asian Youth In Rural Appalachia, Sandra L. Rodeheaver

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Transracially adopted Asian children in rural Appalachia find themselves adopted into places where there is little or no racial and ethnic diversity. In this context, it may be difficult to transgress the model minority stereotype and systemic racism in schools and the community. There are particular issues and concerns related to racial identity for TRAAs that may make the task of becoming fully integrated members of the community challenging. Building on the literature on transracial and transnational adoption, this study aims to better understand the lives and perspectives of two transracially adopted Asian (TRAA) girls living in rural Appalachia and …

Perceptions Of Asian American Representation In Entertainment Media, Lydia Susan Owens Jan 2020

Perceptions Of Asian American Representation In Entertainment Media, Lydia Susan Owens

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The rise of Asian American representation in entertainment media has brought new questions to the current perceptions of Asian Americans in American culture. Where whitewashing of roles or stereotypes of the Model Minority were once portrayed frequently in the past, there are now more diverse stories being shown. When representational images are being shown in entertainment media, there is need for a media literacy lens to critically analyze these images. With this rise in Asian American representation, what are current perceptions of Asian Americans in American culture and American entertainment media? What are current levels of media literacy? This study …

Tissue-Engineered Nanoclay-Based Bone-Mimetic 3d In Vitro Testbed For Studying Breast Cancer Metastasis To Bone, Sumanta Kar Jan 2020

Tissue-Engineered Nanoclay-Based Bone-Mimetic 3d In Vitro Testbed For Studying Breast Cancer Metastasis To Bone, Sumanta Kar

Materials and Nanotechnology

Breast cancer shows a high affinity towards the bone, causing bone-related complications leading to poor clinical prognosis. Approximately 80% of breast cancer patients die within five years after primary cancer has metastasized to the bones. The tumor stage strongly influences the survival rates of patients with breast cancer that has spread to bone at the time of diagnosis. There are currently no effective therapeutics available for bone metastases due to the failure of animal models and the scarcity of human bone metastasized samples, as most patients with advance stages of cancer are already in palliative care. Therefore, it is imperative …

Nitrogen Fertilization Decouples Roots And Microbes In Temperate Forests: Impacts On Soil Carbon And Nitrogen Cycling, Joseph E. Carrara Jan 2020

Nitrogen Fertilization Decouples Roots And Microbes In Temperate Forests: Impacts On Soil Carbon And Nitrogen Cycling, Joseph E. Carrara

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Since the start of the industrial revolution the burning of fossil fuels has resulted in enhanced nitrogen (N) inputs into temperate forests through atmospheric deposition. As N is the limiting nutrient for tree growth across most forests, these inputs have generally enhanced above-ground biomass accumulation. However, the impacts of added N on soil carbon storage (C) are less straightforward. While the mean N response across studies is an enhancement of soil C, these results are variable with some studies reporting net C losses. The classic paradigm posits that N enhances soil C through negative effects on fungal decomposers. However, some …
