The Exploration Of Nanotoxicological Copper And Interspecific Saccharomyces Hybrids, Matthew Joseph Winans Phd Jan 2020

The Exploration Of Nanotoxicological Copper And Interspecific Saccharomyces Hybrids, Matthew Joseph Winans Phd

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Nanotechnology takes advantage of cellular biology’s natural nanoscale operations by interacting with biomolecules differently than soluble or bulk materials, often altering normal cellular processes such as metabolism or growth. To gain a better understanding of how copper nanoparticles hybridized on cellulose fibers called carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) affected growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the mechanisms of toxicity were explored. Multiple methodologies covering genetics, proteomics, metallomics, and metabolomics were used during this investigation. The work that lead to this dissertation discovered that these cellulosic copper nanoparticles had a unique toxicity compared to copper. Further investigation suggested a possible ionic or molecular mimicry …

Evolutionary Genomics Of Dynamic Sex Chromosomes In The Salicaceae, Ran Zhou Jan 2020

Evolutionary Genomics Of Dynamic Sex Chromosomes In The Salicaceae, Ran Zhou

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Identifying the sex-determination region (SDR) and other genomic features of sex chromosomes are of great importance in the studies of the evolution of sex. However, the process of accurately identifying the size and location of the SDR is often difficult, even when a genomic sequence is available. This usually is hindered by large repetitive elements and a lack of recombination in the SDR. In this thesis, I assemble sex chromosomes with whole genomic sequencing data, identify SDRs and explore their genomic features in two sister species from the Salicaceae family. I also develop an interpretation of the lability of the …

Mnemonic Discrimination And Social Anxiety: The Role Of State Anxiety, Gabriella T. Ponzini Jan 2020

Mnemonic Discrimination And Social Anxiety: The Role Of State Anxiety, Gabriella T. Ponzini

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Mnemonic Similarity Task (MST) measures mnemonic discrimination, or the ability to correctly identify new stimuli from highly similar, old stimuli. Neuroscientific and theoretical suppositions suggest that poor mnemonic discrimination may represent a potential risk or maintenance factor for anxious individuals. However, state affect appears to moderate the relation between mnemonic discrimination abilities and trait anxiety. The current study aimed to elucidate the nascent research on mnemonic discrimination and anxiety by evaluating the MST in a specific subtype of anxiety (i.e., social anxiety) and utilizing a clinically relevant stressor task (i.e., knowledge of a future speech). Participants (N = …

Comparative Study Of Model-Based And Learning-Based Disparity Map Fusion Methods, Douglas E. Kerr Jr.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Creating an accurate depth map has several, valuable applications including augmented/virtual reality, autonomous navigation, indoor/outdoor mapping, object segmentation, and aerial topography. Current hardware solutions for precise 3D scanning are relatively expensive. To combat hardware costs, software alternatives based on stereoscopic images have previously been proposed. However, software solutions are less accurate than hardware solutions, such as laser scanning, and are subject to a variety of irregularities. Notably, disparity maps generated from stereo images typically fall short in cases of occlusion, near object boundaries, and on repetitive texture regions or texture-less regions. Several post-processing methods are examined in an effort to …

Development Of An Activity-Based Windowing Approach To Evaluate Real-World Nox Emissions From Modern Medium And Heavy-Duty Diesel Trucks, Rasik Pondicherry

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The introduction of in-use emissions regulations by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S.EPA) requires medium-duty (MD) and heavy-duty (HD) engine manufacturers to demonstrate emissions compliance during in-fleet operation. In the United States (U.S.), the Not-to-Exceed (NTE) method is used to evaluate real-world emissions compliance from on-highway MD and HD trucks. Regulatory agencies, engine manufacturers and research entities have identified that the NTE method incorporates numerous exclusions and evaluates emissions compliance only under selective operating conditions that are favorable for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system to reduce oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions efficiently. Such operation is typically encountered only …

Representation Learning With Adversarial Latent Autoencoders, Stanislav Pidhorskyi M.S. Jan 2020

Representation Learning With Adversarial Latent Autoencoders, Stanislav Pidhorskyi M.S.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A large number of deep learning methods applied to computer vision problems require encoder-decoder maps. These methods include, but are not limited to, self-representation learning, generalization, few-shot learning, and novelty detection. Encoder-decoder maps are also useful for photo manipulation, photo editing, superresolution, etc. Encoder-decoder maps are typically learned using autoencoder networks.
Traditionally, autoencoder reciprocity is achieved in the image-space using pixel-wise
similarity loss, which has a widely known flaw of producing non-realistic reconstructions. This flaw is typical for the Variational Autoencoder (VAE) family and is not only limited to pixel-wise similarity losses, but is common to all methods relying upon …

Programming Of Floating-Gate Transistors For Nonvolatile Analog Memory Array, Haifa Abulaiha Jan 2020

Programming Of Floating-Gate Transistors For Nonvolatile Analog Memory Array, Haifa Abulaiha

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Since they were introduced, floating-gate (FG) transistors have been used as non-volatile digital memory. Recent research has shown that floating-gate transistors can be successfully used as analog memory, specifically as programmable voltage and current sources. However, their proliferation has been limited due to the complex programming procedure and the complex testing equipment. Analog applications such as field-programmable analog arrays (FPAAs) require hundreds to thousands of floating-gate transistors on a single chip which makes the programming process even more complicated and very challenging. Therefore, a simplified, compact, and low-power scheme to program FGs are necessary. This work presents an improved version …

Searches For Fast Radio Bursts Using Machine Learning, Devansh Agarwal

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Fast Radio bursts (FRBs) are enigmatic astrophysical events with millisecond durations and flux densities in the range 0.1-100 Jy, with the prototype source discovered by Lorimer et al. (2007). Like pulsars, FRBs show the characteristic inverse square sweep in observing frequency due to propagation through an ionized medium. This effect is quantified by the dispersion measure (DM). Unlike pulsars, FRBs have anomalously high DMs, which are consistent with an extragalactic origin. Over 100 FRBs have been published at the time of writing, and 13 have been conclusively identified with host galaxies with spectroscopically determined redshifts in the range 0.003 ≤ …

Memories Of Judgment: Constructing The Icty's Legacies, Diane Orentlicher Jan 2020

Memories Of Judgment: Constructing The Icty's Legacies, Diane Orentlicher

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

As the title of this symposium reflects, a critically important dimension of the Tribunal's legacy is its role in understanding the war and genocide in Bosnia. In my remarks, I want to drill down on the word "understanding," one of the most complex facets of the ICTY's legacy. In brief, I will make four points. The first is that the ICTY's expected contribution to understanding the 1990s conflict in Bosnia and the atrocities associated with that conflict was deeply important to many individuals whom I have interviewed in Bosnia-Herzegovina, as well as in Serbia, about the ICTY's impact in their …
