Use Of Image Processing Algorithms For Mine Originating Waste Grain Size Determination, Sebastian Iwaszenko Dec 2020

Use Of Image Processing Algorithms For Mine Originating Waste Grain Size Determination, Sebastian Iwaszenko

Journal of Sustainable Mining

The utilization of mineral wastes from the mining industry is one of most challenging phases in the raw materials life cycle. In many countries, there are piles of mineral waste materials that date back to the previous century. There is also a constant stream of accompanying mineral matter excavated during everyday mine operation. This stream of waste matter is particularly notable for deep coal mining. Grain size composition of waste mineral matter is one of most important characteristics of coal originating waste material. This paper presents the use of image analysis for the determination of grain size composition of mineral …

African Land Mammal Ages, John Van Couvering, Eric Delson Dec 2020

African Land Mammal Ages, John Van Couvering, Eric Delson

Publications and Research

We define 17 African land mammal ages, or AFLMAs, covering the Cenozoic record of the Afro-arabian continent, the planet’s second largest land mass. While fossiliferous deposits are absent on the eroded plateau of the continent’s interior, almost 800 fossil genera from over 350 locations have now been identified in coastal deposits, karst caves, and in the Neogene rift valleys. Given a well-developed geochronologic framework, together with continuing revision to the fossil record—both stimulated by the story of human evolution in Africa—and also to compensate for the variation in fossil ecosystems across such great distances, the AFLMAs are biochronological units defined …

Delayed Diagnosis Of Congenital Hypothyroidism In A Child With Trisomy 21 And Biotinidase Deficiency And Successful Use Of Levothyroxine Sodium Oral Solution., Matthew M. Feldt Dec 2020

Delayed Diagnosis Of Congenital Hypothyroidism In A Child With Trisomy 21 And Biotinidase Deficiency And Successful Use Of Levothyroxine Sodium Oral Solution., Matthew M. Feldt

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Endocrine disorders are more common and appear earlier in people with trisomy 21 (T21) than in the general population, with thyroid dysfunction being the most common, including both congenital and acquired hypothyroidism. The treatment for biotinidase deficiency, a condition that occurs in approximately 1 : 110,000 people, is with biotin (vitamin B7) supplementation. However, biotin can interfere with endocrine laboratory assays and cause falsely low thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and elevated free thyroxine (FT4) levels. This can interfere with the timely diagnosis and subsequent treatment of congenital hypothyroidism (CH). This case report describes an infant with partial biotinidase deficiency that was …

Exploring Bem’S Self Perception Theory In Educational Context, Laila Mohebi, Fatima Bailey Dec 2020

Exploring Bem’S Self Perception Theory In Educational Context, Laila Mohebi, Fatima Bailey

All Works

© 2020 Laila Mohebi, Fatima Bailey. This study offers a synthesis of critical elements of Bem´s self-perception theory in an educational context. Ultimately people understand their beliefs, attitudes and perceptions by understanding their own behaviour and the circumstances behind it. Thus, Bem’s theory is integral in gaining a better understanding of pre-service teachers’ perceptions regarding their TPACK (Technology, Pedagogy and Content Knowledge) dispositions and capabilities. This study explores various experiments. It highlights applications of the theory to the field of education and field experience. It provides a comparative analysis of cognitive dissonance theory and self-perception theory, as both are valuable …

The Indian Child Welfare Act’S Application To Civil Commitments Of Indian Children In State Court Proceeding, Courtney Lewis Dec 2020

The Indian Child Welfare Act’S Application To Civil Commitments Of Indian Children In State Court Proceeding, Courtney Lewis

American Indian Law Journal

Currently there is no clear guidance on the Indian Child Welfare Act’s (ICWA) application in the context of a civil commitment proceeding, which generally occurs at the state level. This Article argues that ICWA applies to any state court proceeding for civil commitment of an Indian child if the Indian parent cannot have their child returned upon demand. The plain language of ICWA provides for this reasonable interpretation. ICWA enacts rights for Indian children, their parents, and their tribes when a party seeks the removal of the Indian child for placement in an institution. Without adherence to these rights, an …

On-Line Fault Detection Of Transmission Line Using Artificial Neural Network., Samah El Safty, Hamdy Ashour, Hesien El Dessouki, Mohamed El Sawaf

Mansoura Engineering Journal

As the voltage and current waveforms arc deformed due to transient during faults, their patient changes according to the type of fault. The Artificial Neural Network (ANN) c2 then be used for fault detection due to its distinguished behavior in pattern recognition. In order to minimize the structure and timing of the ANN, preprocessing of the voltage and current waveforms was done, The data delivered from a simulated power system using PSCAD (EMTP with cad system) was used for training and testing the ANN. An experimental setup, consists of a 3 phase power supply module and transmission line module, is …

Peyote Crisis Confronting Modern Indigenous Peoples: The Declining Peyote Population And A Demand For Conservation, James D. Muneta Dec 2020

Peyote Crisis Confronting Modern Indigenous Peoples: The Declining Peyote Population And A Demand For Conservation, James D. Muneta

American Indian Law Journal

Once abundant, the wild growing peyote cactus plants in Texas and Mexico are being drastically reduced and becoming scarce. Peyote, a slow growing cactus contains the hallucinogenic drug mescaline, is a sacred sacrament used in the Native Americans Church (NAC). It is also used religiously by various Indian tribes throughout the country of Mexico. Although peyote is classified as a controlled substance under federal and state laws, U.S. Congress granted NAC members a “peyote exemption” pursuant to the American Indian Religious Freedom Act to legally use peyote for religious purposes. In U.S. v. Boyll, the federal district court interpreted the …

Leveraging The Inductive Bias Of Large Language Models For Abstract Textual Reasoning, Christopher Michael Rytting Dec 2020

Leveraging The Inductive Bias Of Large Language Models For Abstract Textual Reasoning, Christopher Michael Rytting

Theses and Dissertations

Large natural language models (such as GPT-2 or T5) demonstrate impressive abilities across a range of general NLP tasks. Here, we show that the knowledge embedded in such models provides a useful inductive bias, not just on traditional NLP tasks, but also in the nontraditional task of training a symbolic reasoning engine. We observe that these engines learn quickly and generalize in a natural way that reflects human intuition. For example, training such a system to model block-stacking might naturally generalize to stacking other types of objects because of structure in the real world that has been partially captured by …

Calling To Mentor: The Search For Mentor Identity Through The Development Of Mentor Competency, Julie Nyanjom

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

There is a common assumption that experienced educators will automatically be effective mentors. My experience indicates that building competence in mentoring others requires conscious intent and effort. This article is a self-study action research account that explores mentoring practice from the mentor’s perspective. The study sets to explore the relational dynamics within mentoring relationships, with the focus of obtaining a deeper understanding of the mentor’s growth and the impact of this learning on mentor identity. Data collection was through personal reflective journals, mentoring conversations, and focus group interviews. Findings indicate that critical reflective practice can lead to transformational learning that …
