The interrelationships among long-term ambient air pollution exposure, emotional distress and cognitive decline in older adulthood remain unclear. Long-term exposure may impact cognitive performance and subsequently impact emotional health. Conversely, exposure may initially be associated with emotional distress followed by declines in cognitive performance. Here we tested the inter-relationship between global cognitive ability, emotional distress, and exposure to PM2.5 (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter 2 (nitrogen dioxide) in 6118 older women (aged 70.6 ± 3.8 years) from the Women’s Health Initiative Memory Study. Annual exposure to PM2.5 (interquartile range [IQR] = 3.37 μg/m3) and NO2 (IQR …

The American lawn is our nation’s single largest irrigated “crop” (Lindsey, 2005). In Utah, roughly 65% of our drinking water is applied to residential and commercial landscapes (Center for Water Efficient Landscaping, 2020). Landscapes are typically overwatered, which is why residential and commercial landscape watering is estimated to be one of the largest sources of potential water conservation in the urban setting (Endter-Wada et al., 2008). Plant materials also provide many environmental benefits, such as erosion control, water filtration, and temperature reduction. Knowing how much water to apply to the landscape can be a challenge and is one reason many …

Perturbation biology is a powerful approach to modeling quantitative cellular behaviors and understanding detailed disease mechanisms. However, large-scale protein response resources of cancer cell lines to perturbations are not available, resulting in a critical knowledge gap. Here we generated and compiled perturbed expression profiles of ∼210 clinically relevant proteins in >12,000 cancer cell line samples in response to ∼170 drug compounds using reverse-phase protein arrays. We show that integrating perturbed protein response signals provides mechanistic insights into drug resistance, increases the predictive power for drug sensitivity, and helps identify effective drug combinations. We build a systematic map of "protein-drug" connectivity …

Print Culture, Digital Culture, Poetics And Hermeneutics: Discussion With J. Hillis Miller, Liyuan Zhu Dec 2020

Print Culture, Digital Culture, Poetics And Hermeneutics: Discussion With J. Hillis Miller, Liyuan Zhu

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

This paper is a response to Hillis Miller’s query on the author’s essay “Hillis Miller on the End of Literature.” The author basically agrees with Miller’s view on the shift from print culture to digital culture, explaining the special cultural context under which Chinese scholars emphasize the visual turn. Based on the rapid development of Chinese online literature, the author points out that print culture does not rival but coexists with digital culture. On the other hand, drawing on Aristotle’s Poetics and insights of several leading figures of contemporary hermeneutics, the author contends that Miller’s dichotomy of poetics (form) and …

Western Theory And Historical Studies Of Chinese Literary Criticism, Zhirong Zhu Dec 2020

Western Theory And Historical Studies Of Chinese Literary Criticism, Zhirong Zhu

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

This paper examines the formation of modern historical studies of classical Chinese literary criticism in terms of its interaction with and transformation of western theory. The discipline emerged during the eastward movement of Western ideas in the early twentieth century, promoting the “scientific study” of classical Chinese learning, and instituting curriculum and textbooks in Chinese universities. The reception of Western concepts of “literature” and “literary criticism” in the early twentieth century, largely through Japan, laid the very foundation of historical studies of classical Chinese literary criticism as an independent subject of study. This paper argues that when adopting Western methods …

China Question Of Western Postcolonial Translation Theory, Zhijie Wu, Yuping Wang Dec 2020

China Question Of Western Postcolonial Translation Theory, Zhijie Wu, Yuping Wang

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

“China Question of Western Postcolonial Translation Theory” deals with how western postcolonial translation theory is read, interpreted and applied in China, as well as how the reception in China influences revision and development of the theory. Western postcolonial translation theory, though frequently quoted and highly influential in China, is sometimes incapable of effectively explaining Chinese translation practice and convincing Chinese readers. Based on the analysis of the encounter between postcolonial translation theory and China, three suggestions are proposed to revise translation theory so as to build a “greener,” healthier hetero-generative ecology of languages and cultures.

Cinematic Representation Of Ethnic Minorities In Prc And Postcolonialism, Xinyu Lu Dec 2020

Cinematic Representation Of Ethnic Minorities In Prc And Postcolonialism, Xinyu Lu

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

This paper explores the notions of “Sinophone” and “Chinese-language cinema” under the rubrics of postcolonialism in Chinese film studies both in China and elsewhere around the world. The paper argues that these postcolonial-inspired notions misconstrue Chinese national identity building as imperialist/colonialist endeavours, and dichotomize Han and Chinese ethnic minorities. The paper offers its counterargument by examining cinematic practices of people’s cinema, minority nationality films and native-language films in the PRC.

Reflections On Political Policies And Statements In Arts And Literature In Prc, Jiangang Yang, Gongyan Jiang

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

This paper investigates the political policies and statements in arts and literature in the People’s Republic of China (1949-present). The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has always taken arts and literature as essential parts of its political and ideological rule, and, as such, they constitute a distinct Chinese model or Chinese path in the studies of arts and literature in the modern world. This paper examines the four stages of the political discourse and statements of literature: (1) as an engine of the revolutionary machine in the Mao era (1949-76); (2) as an object of aesthetic appreciation in the decade of …

Reinventing China: Mao’S Ideas On National Form, Wei Li Dec 2020

Reinventing China: Mao’S Ideas On National Form, Wei Li

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

This paper explores Mao Zedong’s conceptualization of “national form” during the 1930s-1940s as a reinvention of imagining China. Mao takes premodern and indigenous China as the Other in translating the theory of “class-nation” of the twentieth century international communist movement into a discursive practice for creating a new nation. Sinicization (中国化) or “making Chinese,” therefore, is not merely the representation of national language and culture of China, but the performative discourse that reinvents the “Chinese nation” via affective (aesthetic) politics. Such aesthetic, emotive, and affective “form” reconstructs time and space, and symbolically produces the subject of revolution. This reconstructed China …

Althusser’S Maoism-Machiavellianism And The Maoist “People”/“Masses”As A China Question Of Western Theory, Fang Yan Dec 2020

Althusser’S Maoism-Machiavellianism And The Maoist “People”/“Masses”As A China Question Of Western Theory, Fang Yan

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Mao’s concept of “people”/“masses” has entered Western theoretical production as the “China Question of Western Theory.” This article argues that it is necessary to rethink Althusser’s conception of “people”/“masses” from a Maoist-Machiavellian perspective. The factual overlapping of Althusser’s Maoist heyday and his increased interest in Machiavelli makes it necessary to conduct a Maoism-Machiavellianism cross-reading of Althusser’s theoretical works, although Althusser’s Maoism exceeds his Machiavellianism on some occasions. Such an overlapping resulted in Althusser’s reconfiguration of a notion of “people”/“masses” that is conjunctural, non-deterministic and non-humanist, which led to his theses of the New Prince/Principality, the supremacy of class struggle, masses-make-history, …

“Western Marxism” In Mao’S China, Jun Zeng, Yichen Wang Dec 2020

“Western Marxism” In Mao’S China, Jun Zeng, Yichen Wang

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

China’s reception of “Western Marxism” is a critical part of the global history of Marxism. This paper examines three aspects of the reception of Western Marxism in literary and art criticism during the early years of Mao’s China (1949-65): the Western Marxist critique of surrealism, debates over Marx’s Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts of 1844, and Sartrean existentialism and Western Marxism. The impacts of Western Marxist literary thought upon Chinese literary studies during the early years of the PRC are discussed, along with the extensive influx of Western Marxism that began in the reform era of post-Mao China (1978- ) …

Operationalizing Niche Construction Theory With Stone Tools, Radu Lovita, David R. Braun, Matthew J. Douglass, Simon J. Holdaway, Sam C. Lin, Deborah I. Olsezewski, Zeljko Rezek

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

One of the greatest difficulties with evolutionary approaches in the study of stone tools (lithics) has been finding a mechanism for tying culture and biology in a way that preserves human agency and operates at scales that are visible in the archaeological record. The concept of niche construction, whereby organisms actively construct their environments and change the conditions for selection, could provide a solution to this problem. In this review, we evaluate the utility of niche construction theory (NCT) for stone tool archaeology. We apply NCT to lithics both as part of the “extended phenotype” and as residuals or precipitates …

Toll-Like Receptor 7 Is Required For Lacrimal Gland Autoimmunity And Type 1 Diabetes Development In Male Nonobese Diabetic Mice., Ivy L Debreceni, Michael S Chimenti, David V. Serreze, Aron M Geurts, Yi-Guang Chen, Scott M Lieberman

Faculty Research 2020

Sjögren syndrome (SS) is an immunologically complex, chronic autoimmune disease targeting lacrimal and salivary glands. Nonobese diabetic (NOD) mice spontaneously develop inflammation of lacrimal and salivary glands with histopathological features similar to SS in humans including focal lymphocytic infiltrates in the affected glands. The innate immune signals driving lymphocytic infiltration of these glands are not well-defined. Here we evaluate the role of Toll-like receptor (TLR) 7 in the development of SS-like manifestations in NOD mice. We created a Tlr7 knockout NOD mouse strain and performed histological and gene expression studies to characterize the effects of TLR7 on autoimmunity development. TLR7 …

In The Air is an investigative podcast series about the 1998 Cable Car Disaster in Cavalese, Italy.

On February 3, 1998 disaster struck the Alpe Cermis ski resort in Cavalese, Italy when four American pilots flew their jet through the resort during a low-altitude training mission. The wing of their jet severed a suspension cable that was holding a gondola car aloft. When the cable snapped, the car plummeted to the earth with 20 passengers inside. Only the pilots survived.

The disaster quickly devolved into an international fiasco and has been regarded by some as one of the most gruesome …

Pirate Radio Proves Invaluable To Immigrant Communities During The Pandemic — But The Fcc Isn’T Having It, May Olvera

Capstones

In January 2020, congress passed the PIRATE Act into law, expanding the legal consequences for operating pirate radio tenfold. Although the FCC claims that the reason they are cracking down on pirate stations — that is, stations broadcasting on regulated airwaves without an FCC license — is that they could interfere with emergency messaging, the pandemic has proven otherwise; there is no evidence of pirates interfering with official safety warnings. In fact, most pirate stations are run by immigrants speaking in their native tongue and they have been able to provide vulnerable and underserved communities with the information they need …

Argentina’s new non-binary ID cards (DNI in Spanish) were highly celebrated when they were announced in July 2021 via a presidential decree. Government agencies had until November 18th to update systems and databases to include the new gender marker “X.” But that didn’t happen, so those with the non-binary DNI are unable to access essential services. The Argentine government cited the national 2012 Gender Identity Law, which guarantees a DNI that fully reflects a citizen’s gender identity, as the basis for the measure. However, for many in the trans*, non-binary and gender non-conforming community, the decree was unnecessary to enforce …

Microstructural Constraints On The Nebular And Asteroidal Histories Of Calcium-Aluminum-Rich Inclusions From Cv3 Chondrites, Shaofan Che

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The petrology and mineralogy of calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions (CAIs) from CV3 carbonaceous chondrites have been investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The goal of this dissertation is twofold: (1) to gain new insights into the nebular processes, such as vapor-solid reactions, accretion, transport, that are responsible for the formation of non-igneous CAIs, and (2) to better understand the role of fluid in the secondary alteration of CAIs on the CV3 chondrite parent body. This work represents the first systematic microstructural study of CAIs from CV3 chondrites.

Chapter 2 presents the microstructural observations of primary mineralogies of fine-grained, spinel-rich inclusions (FGIs) from …

Intelligent Networks For High Performance Computing, William Whitney Schonbein

Computer Science ETDs

There exists a resurgence of interest in `smart' network interfaces that can operate on data as it flows through a network. However, while smart capabilities have been expanding, what they can do for high-performance computing (HPC) is not well-understood. In this work, we advance our understanding of the capabilities and contributions of smart network interfaces to HPC. First, we show current offloaded message demultiplexing can mitigate (but not eliminate) overheads incurred by multithreaded communication. Second, we demonstrate current offloaded capabilities can be leveraged to provide Turing complete program execution on the interface. We elaborate with a framework for offloading arbitrary …

The purpose of this study is to ensure that our early childhood classrooms are trauma sensitive for our students that have been exposed or are experiencing trauma. Roughly 26 percent of children in the United States witness or experience a trauma before the age of 4( Briggs- Gowan et al.2010). The study was conducted in three different phases. In the first phase, data was collected on what strategies are presently implemented for students who have been exposed to trauma. In the second phase, strategies, techniques and tools were introduced to help during stressful situations that happened during class. In the …
