Prevalence And Types Of Incivility In Occupational Therapy Fieldwork, Deborah J. Bolding, Travis Dudley, Adrienne Dahlmeier, Lauren Bland, Aimee Castro, Adrianna Covarrubias
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Civility between health professions students and fieldwork educators enhances positive learning outcomes, while incivility can lead to stress, loss of confidence, mistakes, disengagement, and decreased patient outcomes. A survey of recent graduates of occupational therapy programs (N = 247) explored the prevalence and types of incivility and bullying experienced during their Level II fieldwork experiences. Respondents reported that incivility in fieldwork education was widespread, with more severe experiences of bullying reported by 16% of respondents. Occupational therapy programs and fieldwork educators must take an active role in prevention and management of uncivil behaviors, and promote positive academic and patient care …

Can Human Neurological Tests Of Consciousness Be Applied To Octopus?, Benedetta Cecconi, Jitka Annen, Steven Laureys
Can Human Neurological Tests Of Consciousness Be Applied To Octopus?, Benedetta Cecconi, Jitka Annen, Steven Laureys
Animal Sentience
If the anatomy, physiology and behaviour of a species differ substantially from our own, can we infer that the species is unconscious? In the daily clinical care of patients with disorders of consciousness we face many similar challenges: our current approach with these patients - a combination of behavioural and brain imaging-based assessments - might also be a viable route to investigating octopus consciousness.

Contextual privacy is an essential concept in social software communication. Managing privacy of data disclosed in social software dependence strongly on the context the data is disclosed in. The sheer amount of posts and audiences may lead to context ambiguity. Ambiguity can affect contextual privacy management and effective communication. Current contextual privacy management approaches can be either too complex to use, or too simple to offer fine-grained control. In many cases, it is challenging to strike a balance between effective control and ease-of-use. In this article, we analyse contextual privacy by in relation to context and communication. We examine a …

Magnetic Properties Of Mn Doped Crystalline And Amorphous Ge Thin Films Grown On Si (111), İlknur Gündüz Aykaç, Aykut Can Önel, Burcu Toydemi̇r Yaşasun, Leyla Çolakerol Arslan
Turkish Journal of Physics
We investigated the effects of crystalline order on the structural and magnetic properties of ultrathin Mndoped Ge thin films grown by thermal diffusion. The dopant motion which occurs during the annealing stage appears to differ considerably depending upon whether the Ge layer is in a crystalline or an amorphous state. The details of the temperature-dependent magnetization curves reveal that the a-MnGe and c-MnGe films show ferromagnetic property up to 300K and ~250K, respectively. Ferromagnetic Mn5 Ge3 thin film with weakly anisotropic in-plane magnetization is formed on amorphous Ge thin film, while weakly ferromagnetic Mn5 Gex Si3-x nanostructures are developed on …

Turkish Journal of Biology
Boron is a naturally occurring trace element found in organic and inorganic complexes. Boron-containing compounds are required for living organisms for diverse metabolic functions, including nitrogen fixation in microorganisms, cell wall stability in plants, and bone and carbohydrate metabolism in animals. The number of studies about the effect of boron in biological model systems is very limited; so far, there has been no study on the correlation between boron and amyloid-beta toxicity. Here, we investigated the possible effects of 2 boron-containing compounds-sodium borate decahydrate and boric acid-against amyloid-beta toxicity. In our in vitro amyloid-beta toxicity model, we showed that these …

Evaluation Of The Symbiotic Relation Between Endophyte And Poplar Trees Exposed To Landfill Leachate, Catalina Vega Hurtado
Masters Theses
“The contamination of soil and groundwater from leachate leakage from landfill has turned, nowadays, into a global public issue. One of the main concerns about this pollutant is the potential threat to human and ecosystem health. The current research studied endophyte bacteria in association with poplar trees (Populus sp.), as a method of bioremediation of landfill leachates. The objective of the project was to identify treatment strategies that may improve plant performance (survival rates, plant fitness, and degradation efficacy) with the purpose of being implemented in phytoremediation plots, aimed to intercept and treat landfill leachate, before the contamination of watershed. …

Design And Comparison Of Unoptimized And Optimized Gray Code Multi-Level Systems, Shirly Adams Gamliel
Masters Theses
“As the conventional binary MOS-based VLSI technology is reaching limitations in chip area, speed, and power, new technologies are being researched. Some such technologies relate to multi-level logic design. This thesis explores the process and benefits of applying and optimizing multi-level design techniques to an existing Gray code binary system. Specifically, the multi-level system is designed using CoreMem technology and is optimized using Indira Dugganapally’s optimization techniques.
The first step is generating the n-bit binary and quaternary truth tables for an encoder’s Gray code output and additional desired data. Then, the data for each n-bit system is arranged in multi-level …
The Case For "Unfair Methods Of Competition" Rulemaking, Rohit Chopra, Lina M. Khan
The Case For "Unfair Methods Of Competition" Rulemaking, Rohit Chopra, Lina M. Khan

A key feature of antitrust today is that the law is developed entirely through adjudication. Evidence suggests that this exclusive reliance on adjudication has failed to deliver a predictable, efficient, or participatory antitrust regime. Antitrust litigation and enforcement are protracted and expensive, requiring extensive discovery and costly expert analysis. In theory, this approach facilitates nuanced and fact-specific analysis of liability and well-tailored remedies. But in practice, the exclusive reliance on case-by-case adjudication has yielded a system of enforcement that generates ambiguity, drains resources, privileges incumbents, and deprives individuals and firms of any real opportunity to participate in the process of …

Thank you to the organizers for having me. I’m delighted to be here. I’m going to take a step away from conceptual art, and go a little bit into history and a little bit into doctrine – and do the usual law professor thing. We law professors like to say that one of the great things about the job is that we get to overrule the Supreme Court ten thousand times a day, but the bad thing about the job is no one cares. And so, I’m going to try and make this such that you care.

Boynton V. Virginia And The Anxieties Of The Modern African-American Customer, Amber Baylor
Faculty Scholarship
In 1958, Bruce Boynton was arrested for ordering food in a Whites-Only diner and charged with criminal trespass. Sixty years later, African Americans continue to face arrest and threat of arrest in commercial establishments based on discriminatory trespass claims. When store owners or employees decide to exclude would-be patrons from their establishment for discriminatory reasons, both overt and implicit, they rely on the police to enforce this form of discrimination. This article considers the legacy of Boynton v. Virginia, particularly the resonance of Boynton’s unaddressed claim, that the state enforcement of discriminatory trespass allegations is an Equal Protection …

Human rights advocacy can construct passive “victims,” objectify or displace rightsholders and affected communities, and contribute to their disempowerment. In response to critiques – made by rightsholders, activists, and scholars alike – about the values and effects of such disempowering advocacy models, many advocates are increasingly prioritizing an understanding of these dynamics and reforming practice to better center and support the agency of directly affected individuals and groups. However, the tactics and modalities of these efforts are under-examined in scholarly literature, and many human rights advocates lack access to adequate documentation of tactics and spaces for peer learning. In this …

This essay introduces an online edition of Santos P. Amadeo’s Argentine Constitutional Law to be published by the Academia Puertorriqueña de Jurisprudencia y Legislación. Tracing the book to its origins in a paper Amadeo wrote for a seminar in comparative constitutional law at Columbia Law School in the 1930s, we discuss the intellectual context that gave rise to the book and assess its author’s methodological choices. We then examine one particular substantive choice: Whereas the paper specifically draws attention to the importance of understanding every form of political subdivision in a federalist system – identifying Argentina’s as the provinces, the …

Today, some hedge funds attack public companies for the sole purpose of inducing a short-lived panic which they can exploit for profit. This sort of market manipulation harms average investors who entrust financial markets with their retirement savings. While short selling serves a critical function in the capital markets, some short sellers disseminate negative opinion about a company, inducing a panic and sharp decline in the stock price, and rapidly close that position for a profit prior to the price partially or fully rebounding. We urge the SEC to enact two rules which will discourage manipulative short selling. The petition …
The Paradox Of Contracting In Markets, Robert E. Scott
The Paradox Of Contracting In Markets, Robert E. Scott
Faculty Scholarship
Traditional economic analysis distinguishes economic organization along three dimensions: firm, contract, and market. This categorization is misleading in any number of respects, but none more so than the assumption that contract and market are separate modes of exchange. In fact, other than barter, which is almost unknown in contemporary commercial transactions, every market transaction is implemented by contract. Thus, in markets the two modes of exchange are inextricably combined. Moreover, the vast majority of contract activity occurs in some form of market, so it does not require much loss of generalization to say that not only are contracts in all …

Investigation Of Wide Bandgap Semiconductors For Room Temperature Spintronic, And Photovoltaic Applications, Vishal Saravade
Doctoral Dissertations
"Suitability of wide bandgap semiconductors for room temperature (RT) spintronic, and photovoltaic applications is investigated.
Spin properties of metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) – grown gadolinium-doped gallium nitride (GaGdN) are studied and underlying mechanism is identified. GaGdN exhibits Anomalous Hall Effect at room temperature if it contains oxygen or carbon atoms but shows Ordinary Hall Effect in their absence. The mechanism for spin and ferromagnetism in GaGdN is a combination of intrinsic, metallic conduction, and carrier-hopping mechanisms, and is activated by oxygen or carbon centers at interstitial or similar sites. A carrier-related mechanism in MOCVD-grown GaGdN at room temperature makes …
