Experiments With Suppression: The Evolution Of Repressive Legality In Britain In The Revolutionary Period, Christopher M. Roberts Jan 2020

Experiments With Suppression: The Evolution Of Repressive Legality In Britain In The Revolutionary Period, Christopher M. Roberts

Loyola of Los Angeles International and Comparative Law Review

This article is concerned with the structure of repressive governance, and how it has evolved historically. It examines this theme through an exploration of the manner which repressive laws and institutions evolved in Britain over the course of the late eighteenth century. In particular, it reviews the various measures that British authorities utilized and relied upon in order to confront a growing wave of calls for social and political reforms. These included a policy of aggressive prosecutions of dissidents; the creation of new institutions such as the Home Office designed to enhance the powers of the central authorities; extralegal measures …

Relational Rural Geographies, Resilience, And Narratives Of Small-Scale Fruit Farming In The Metropolitan Countryside Of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, Felipe Da Silva Machado

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

This thesis analyses the processes through which farming and rural communities in transition economies build resilience in the face of changes to rural areas caused by globalisation and urbanisation. The study is based on analysis of how urban-rural interactions have affected small-scale farming in the metropolitan countryside of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, an area where land-use, economic and environmental policies and urban land speculation have prompted increasing competition between agricultural, industrial, residential and conservation land uses within a highly multifunctional countryside. To achieve this, the research examined the pressures facing farmers in areas affected by the metropolitan dynamics of Rio …

South Carolina Journal of International Law and Business

The International Criminal Court (ICC) claims the right to extend its jurisdiction over nationals of non-consenting, non-party States to the Rome Statute. The United States, as a non-party State, argues that the Rome Statute violates customary international law by doing so. Professor Dapo Akande has written an article that defends the ICC practice. This article refutes the arguments made by Professor Akande.

You Shall Not Pass! How The Dublin System Fueled Fortress Europe, Ashley Binetti Armstrong Jan 2020

You Shall Not Pass! How The Dublin System Fueled Fortress Europe, Ashley Binetti Armstrong

Chicago Journal of International Law

t This Article examines the recent proliferation of walls and fences in Europe, fueled by the Dublin Regulation’s failure to distribute responsibility for asylum seekers equitably among European states. Legal scholarship does not lack literature bemoaning the failures of the E.U.’s Dublin Regulation—which dictates, generally, that the country where an asylum seeker first enters the E.U. is responsible for processing his or her claim for protection. Yet scholarship on border walls and fences, and what induces European states to construct them, is not prominent in the literature. The critiques lodged against the Dublin Regulation have primarily focused on its futility …
