Delivering Extinction, Tatum Cordy
Delivering Extinction, Tatum Cordy
Honors College Theses
Living during a human extinction is something no one is prepared for. No one thought humans would last this long. Even the sun dies eventually. A child’s drawing with a dripping smile. Sun rays heating soil into dust, melting metals, and large pine trees would light like matches. Smoke would rise into the air blocking out everything but the fires taking over the once livable landscape of Earth. Then, it would be over. The sun would explode. Simple and quick, painless for the few who wouldn’t try to resist their demise. Too bad humans were a few million years early. …

Intellectual Property In The Digital Streaming Age: How Music Becomes A Lawsuit, Alexandra Tasev
Honors College Theses
A mix of both entertainment business and law, the purpose of this review is to address the question of “are current copyright laws and procedures too restrictive of new and smaller-name artists from entering the market?” Through a law review and analysis of the history of copyright law, this thesis outlines the issues new, smaller music artists face as a result of rapid digital evolution paired with a slow-moving legal system. Failing to amend the current standards for dealing with old copyright cases will cause further issues with the growing popularity of digital platforms like YouTube, Soundcloud, Spotify, and TikTok. …

They provide a unique opportunity to understanding together the internal structure and dynamic evolution of this protoplanet. Northwest Africa (NWA) 8321 was suggested to be an unbrecciated noritic diogenite meteorite, which is confirmed by our oxygen and chromium isotopic data. Here, we find that olivine in this sample has been partly replaced by orthopyroxene, troilite, and minor metal. The replacement texture of olivine is unambiguous evidence of sulfur-involved metasomatism in the interior of Vesta. The presence of such replacement …

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Across past decade online services have enabled individuals and organizations to perform different types of transactions such as banking, government transactions etc. The online services have also enabled more developments of applications, at cheap cost with elastic and scalable, fault tolerant system. These online services are offered by services providers which are use authentication, authorization and accounting framework based on client-server model. Though this model has been used over decades, study shows it is vulnerable to different hacks and it is also inconvenient to use for the end users. In addition, the services provider has total control over user data …

The density of worker activities must be balanced with efficient and fair work scheduling. A good schedule will minimize worker dissatisfaction while also maintaining their physical health. This study aims to optimize workers' schedules using a genetic algorithm. An efficient chromosome representation is designed to produce a good schedule in a reasonable amount of time. The mutation method is used in combination with reciprocal mutation and exchange mutation, while the type of crossover used is one …
Diplomatic Intervention And The Effects Of Third-Party State Power On Intrastate War Outcome, Alexann Sandberg
Diplomatic Intervention And The Effects Of Third-Party State Power On Intrastate War Outcome, Alexann Sandberg
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
This paper seeks to examine the role third-party states may play as diplomatic intervenors in intrastate wars. Because diplomatic interventions seek settlement outcomes over military victory, understanding the efficacy of these interventions may provide support for their usage over non-diplomatic options. I hypothesize that third-party state power, in the form of military, economic, and political capabilities, will impact the likelihood of diplomatic intervention outcome; more powerful third-party states will have a greater likelihood of producing preferred outcomes. I use 12 multinomial regression models to examine this relationship. I find that economic capabilities are the only factor of state power that …

Exploring Cooperative Behaviors Among The Sena Of Gorongosa National Park, Mozambique And The Dolgan/Nganasan Of Ust'-Avam, Siberia, Victoria Silva
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Why do humans cooperate? Mechanisms including inclusive fitness, reciprocal altruism, indirect reciprocity, and costly signaling provide explanations for human cooperation and partner choice. Using data from the Sena people of Gorongosa National Park, Mozambique and the Dolgan/Nganasan of Ust’-Avam Siberia, I examine several questions relating to cooperation. During a preliminary study, interview and observational data was collected that provide insight on the day-to-day activities of 33 households in Gorongosa National Park. Cooperative activities include cooperative socializing, play, cooperative breeding, and household labor. It was found that most daily activities observed were done solitarily and men were most likely to be …
Soil Response To Fire Frequency In The Northern Columbia Basin Sagebrush Steppe, Leslie C. Nichols
Soil Response To Fire Frequency In The Northern Columbia Basin Sagebrush Steppe, Leslie C. Nichols
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Fire is one of the most significant disturbances in an ecosystem, as it is capable of altering the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soil, and the fire frequency in semi-arid ecosystems is increasing. These changes can potentially alter plant-soil feedbacks that may affect post-fire recovery of the native plant and soil communities and lead to an ecosystem state change. However, there is much uncertainty about the magnitude of change as soils are exposed to more fires, because soil recovery and changes in fire severity following a first fire mediate the impact of successive fires on soil properties. To improve …

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
Day to day increasing flow of sensitive or confidential information, such as images, audio, video, etc., over unsecured medium (like Internet) has motivated more concentration for concrete crypto algorithms. In this paper, an image encryption algorithm based on a permutation and substitution cipher has been proposed. In permutation stage, image pixels are shuffled using gingerbreadman map while in substitution stage, pixels are bit-wise XOR-ed with the keystream generated using RC4A (Rivest Cipher 4A) stream cipher algorithm. For the proposed scheme, statistical analyses, like histogram, adjacent pixels correlation coefficient, and information entropy are given. Security analyses, like key sensitivity, occlusion analysis …

Analysis Of Map/Ph/1 Queueing Model With Breakdown, Instantaneous Feedback And Server Vacation, G. Ayyappan, K. Thilagavathy
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this article, we analyze a single server queueing model with feedback, a single vacation under Bernoulli schedule, breakdown and repair. The arriving customers follow the Markovian Arrival Process (MAP) and service follow the phase-type distribution. When the server returns from vacation, if there is no one present in the system, the server will wait until the customer’s arrival. When the service completion epoch if the customer is not satisfied then that customer will get the service immediately. Under the steady-state probability vector that the total number of customers are present in the system is probed by the Matrix-analytic method. …

Land use change, by disrupting the co-evolved interactions between plants and their pollinators, could be causing plant reproduction to be limited by pollen supply. Using a phylogenetically controlled meta-analysis on over 2200 experimental studies and more than 1200 wild plants, we ask if land use intensification is causing plant reproduction to be pollen limited at global scales. Here we report that plants reliant on pollinators in urban settings are more pollen limited than similarly pollinator-reliant plants in other landscapes. Plants functionally specialized on bee pollinators are more pollen limited in natural than managed vegetation, but the reverse is true for …

Pleistocene glacial-interglacial cycles are correlated with dramatic temperature oscillations. Examining how species responded to these natural fluctuations can provide valuable insights into the impacts of present-day anthropogenic climate change. Here we present a phylogeographic study of the extinct American mastodon (Mammut americanum), based on 35 complete mitochondrial genomes. These data reveal the presence of multiple lineages within this species, including two distinct clades from eastern Beringia. Our molecular date estimates suggest that these clades arose at different times, supporting a pattern of repeated northern expansion and local extirpation in response to glacial cycling. Consistent with this hypothesis, we also note …

We are unaware of any published IHT guidelines to facilitate safe transport in pediatric hospitals.
Shelf Life Extension Of Fresh Strawberries Packaged In Clamshells With Chlorine Dioxide Generating Sachets, Samuel J. Kessler
Shelf Life Extension Of Fresh Strawberries Packaged In Clamshells With Chlorine Dioxide Generating Sachets, Samuel J. Kessler
All Dissertations
Strawberry waste occurs at all lifecycle stages from production, distribution, retail, and household handling; this is an estimated 640 million pounds of strawberries lost valuing at $1.4 billion dollars. Active packaging strategies based on the generation of gaseous chlorine dioxide in the primary package have potential to provide to preserve strawberries in storage extending the shelf life. Benchtop studies have shown significant bactericidal activity of chlorine dioxide and quality preserving effects. As chlorine dioxide travels from the source through the package the concentration decreases as it acts at the surface of the food product. As a result, dose is uneven …

Emocolor : Fine-Grained Emotion Recognition From Skin Color Information, Maria Guadalupe Jimenez Velasco
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
In everyday human-to-human communication, emotions play a fundamental role. Emotions represent the affective behavior of humans that is multi-modal, subtle, and complex. Previous approaches based on conventional computer vision explicitly used shape information. Modern approaches based on deep learning implicitly exploit all information available in the image, but by their nature make it difficult to assess the contributions of each source of information. In addition, skin color as a unimodal technique to recognize emotions has been explored to recognize only three coarse-grained emotions in valence space. To the best of our knowledge, this work presents the first approach to fine-grained emotion …

“Research on multicultural learning has focused on formal and local settings, such as schools, but young people are interacting with, and therefore learning from, informal settings and nonlocal contexts, including online platforms.” (Kim, 2016, p. 1). The instructor must be vigilant in selecting online teaching pedagogy when offering sensitive topics of courses because face-to-face intimacy is usually a component of more traditional courses in diversity (Matloob Haghanikar, 2019). The purpose of this current paper is to align critical parts of an experiential race relations curriculum (Clarke, 2019; Kranz & Lund, 2004) in a face-to-face setting with digital technologies available for …

Literacy Based Behavioral Interventions: A Review Of The Literature, Shannon R. Eshman
Theses and Dissertations
In this systematic review of the literature on literacy-based behavioral interventions (LBBIs), ten selected articles were compared to the Quality Indicators prescribed by the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC). There were eight main categories of standards which included 1) context, 2) participant characteristics, 3) description of the intervention, 4) how it was implemented, 5) if the implementation had fidelity and 6) validity, 7) outcome measures, and 8) data analysis. Each of the studies was evaluated according to these indicators by using a coding chart. Results indicated that LBBIs can be considered an evidence-based practice according to the CEC standards.
Proactive Management In Academic Libraries: Promoting Improved Communication And Inclusion Of Academic Librarians And Archivists In Cybersecurity Policy Creation, Paul J. Luft
Theses and Dissertations
Although increasing cybersecurity threats continue in libraries, not many studies are available which examine surrounding cybersecurity policies. Even less has been done on specific types of libraries such as academic and archives. When it comes to academic libraries, cybersecurity policies take a top-down approach to managing and creating policies. The problem is that both academic libraries and archives are unique areas within a university setting. Some of the general policies do not always handle specific issues dealt with in an academic library or archives. This paper investigates if an actual gap or void in policy exists which could create issues …
