Obesity fosters low-grade inflammation in white adipose tissue (WAT) that may contribute to the insulin resistance that characterizes type 2 diabetes. However, the causal relationship of these events remains unclear. The established dominance of STAT1 function in the immune response suggests an obligate link between inflammation and the comorbidities of obesity. To this end, we sought to determine how STAT1 activity in white adipocytes affects insulin sensitivity. STAT1 expression in WAT inversely correlated with fasting plasma glucose in both obese mice and humans. Metabolomic and gene expression profiling established STAT1 deletion in adipocytes (STAT1a-KO) enhanced mitochondrial function …

Incidence Of Antibiotic Resistance And Plasmid Content In Freshwater Beach Sand And Water And Clinical Urinary Tract Infection Escherichia Coli Isolates, Robert F. White

Biology Theses

Antibiotic-resistant (AR) bacteria have been found in environmental ecosystems including beach sand and water, and pose a serious threat to the mitigation of human and animal disease. The presence of antibiotic residues in the environment, fueled by wastewater effluent and agricultural runoff, may produce selective pressure on introduced microbes such as Escherichia coli, leading to the production of AR populations. This study characterized and compared the antibiotic resistance patterns and plasmid content of E. coli isolated from a freshwater beach and clinical urinary tract infection (UTI) samples. A higher level of antibiotic resistance was expected in clinical (UTI) Escherichia coli …

Using Stable Isotopes To Determine Dominant Methane Production Pathways Of Thaw Ponds In A Subarctic Peatland, Kathryn Ann Bennett Dec 2020

Using Stable Isotopes To Determine Dominant Methane Production Pathways Of Thaw Ponds In A Subarctic Peatland, Kathryn Ann Bennett

Master's Theses and Capstones

Arctic and subarctic ecosystems are currently warming faster than any other region of the globe, accelerating seasonal permafrost thaw. As thaw progresses, small water bodies can form due to slumping of the peatland surface. These ponds emit methane (CH4), a strong, radiatively important trace gas, predominantly through ebullition (bubbling). Two different types of methanogenic Archaea present in these systems produce CH4 through their respective production pathways: acetoclastic and hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis. The acetoclastic pathway forms CH4 using CH3COOH, an organic carbon (C) source while hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis uses CO2, an inorganic C source. Stable isotopes can be used to characterize the relative …

Parent Perspectives On Their Role In The Transition Planning Process Of Children With Significant Support Needs, Elizabeth Elaine Osborne Dec 2020

Parent Perspectives On Their Role In The Transition Planning Process Of Children With Significant Support Needs, Elizabeth Elaine Osborne

Dissertations

Legally coordinated transition plans have been the expectation since the Individual with Disabilities Education Act of 1990 (IDEA, 1990). Research is firm that parent participation and high expectations are evidence-based practices supporting improved outcomes in post-secondary environments (Mazzotti et al., 2016; Test, Mazzotti et al., 2009). Yet, these two expectations, which should work synchronously, often seem to be out of sync. This qualitative phenomenological study aimed to give voice to the parents of children with significant support needs (SSN; Colorado Department of Education, 2017). The researcher explored the parent’s perceptions in the transition planning process, specifically evaluating their role in …
