Regulation Of Transposable Elements By Tumor Suppressor Protein 53, Andrew J. Rosato Dec 2020

Regulation Of Transposable Elements By Tumor Suppressor Protein 53, Andrew J. Rosato

Theses

Multiple transposable elements have been identified by colocalization analysis that display a strong predicted regulatory relationship with p53 associated peaks. RNA-Seq was used to identify differentially expressed transposable elements. ChIP-Seq was used to identify peaks representing transcription factor binding sites in p53 activated cells. The results of both experiments were then combined in a colocalization analysis identifying transposable element locations that were both differentially regulated and located near p53 associated peaks. The colocalization of ChIP-Seq and RNA-Seq analyses allows for the verification of p53’s regulatory role in the expression of transposable elements across the genome. A Monte Carlo simulation was …

Implementation Of Pseudo-Random Number Generator Using Lfsr, Touheda Khanom, Fahmeda Khanom

Publications and Research

Linear Feedback Shift Registers (LFSR) play a vital role to provide cybersecurity for the data communication system. LFSR is a shift register where the input is linear of its previous states. The most important application of LFSR is the device’s ability to generate a pseudo-random sequence of values that are used in encryption and decryption to secure personal data. Moreover, LFSR is used in Cyclic Redundancy Check Calculations (CRC) which can help to detect errors and corruption in data communications as LFSR feedback values can be modified. The main objective of the research is to generate the pseudo-random sequence of …

Transferring A Unique Collection To The Institutional Repository, Stephen G. Krueger

Dartmouth Library Staff Publications

Until fall 2020, the Computer Science department at Dartmouth College maintained an online collection of technical reports on their website. Faculty and librarians have worked together to transfer the collection to the school's institutional repository, Dartmouth Digital Commons. The project involved several major components: the creation of a space in the IR that met the specific needs of the collection, the transfer of existing materials so that the previous site could be deleted without losing any content, and the development of a workflow for adding future materials. In this presentation, the librarian responsible for the project will describe the process. …

The Impact Of Experiential Virtual Dinosaur Excavation Assignments On Exam Preparation And Performance Inâ An Introductory, University-Level Geology Course, Nicole Elizabeth Ortiz Dec 2020

The Impact Of Experiential Virtual Dinosaur Excavation Assignments On Exam Preparation And Performance Inâ An Introductory, University-Level Geology Course, Nicole Elizabeth Ortiz

Theses and Dissertations

Advocates assert that experiential/applicational learning facilitates deep understanding but there is a dearth of empirical research testing the effectiveness of experiential learning in university geology courses. Domack (1999) and Moecher (2004) document applicational assignments within geology courses. These evaluations, however, are based solely on instructor opinion and informal student comments. To evaluate the effectiveness of experiential assignments this study utilizes empirical data from control and test groups in each of two semesters of Geology 100, a general education course on dinosaurs. Control groups completed traditional research papers which were replaced by experiential assignments in the test groups. The first semester …

Optimal Location Of Ev-Pv Charging Stations In A Radial Distribution System., El Shaimaa Eid, Mohammed Saeed, Magdi El-Saadawi

Mansoura Engineering Journal

The increasing penetration of electric vehicles (EVs) will greatly affect the operation of distribution networks. On one hand, the EVs can benefit the electric distribution systems. On the other hand, the connection of EVs to the distribution networks poses a series of new challenges for electric utility operators. This paper proposes an algorithm for optimal location of a combined EV-PV charging station in a distribution network for minimizing the system losses. The proposed method depends on PSO for solving the optimization problem. The method is performed in Matlab/Simulink and is applied to a 33-bus radial distribution test system with and …

The Effects Of Glycosylation On Immunogenicity And Replication Of Emerging Viral Pathogens, Elizabeth Carvosso Clarke

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

For filoviruses, a family of hemorrhagic fever viruses, the main antigen for vaccines in development is the glycosylated glycoprotein GP1,2. How the glycosylation of GP1,2 differs when the protein is produced in different cell lines is unclear. We showed significant differences in the types of glycans conferred onto filovirus GP1,2s in produced in mammalian-origin and insect-origin cell lines. Mammalian-derived filovirus GP1,2s have diverse N-linked glycans and extensive O-linked glycans, whereas insect-derived filovirus GP1,2s have N-linked glycans that are primarily paucimannose type and have no observable O-linked glycans. We then showed that differences in glycosylation impacted how immunogenic the proteins were …

Ibram X. Kendi's How To Be An Antiracist, Quatez Scott Dec 2020

Ibram X. Kendi's How To Be An Antiracist, Quatez Scott

Intersections: Critical Issues in Education

This book review of Ibram X. Kendi’s How to Be an Antiracist (2019) addresses the importance of exploring race relations in the U.S. from a framework that focuses on racial policies. Commonly referred to as “systemic racism” and “institutional racism”, racist policies maintain racial inequities. Antiracists aim to eliminate those racial policies. Kendi’s ability to address these issues head on with deeply researched historical narratives brings light to the ways racial policies are reinforced, which reproduce racist ideas. This book drives straight to the heart of racial challenges and takes a new approach at examining how and why humans should …

With the proliferation of students’ abilities to use technology, in particular virtual reality (VR) applications, teachers are experimenting with VR in virtual learning environments (VLE) to engage students; but clear ethics and safety guidelines are not available. Within the field of education additional research is needed to determine how VR is employed in VLEs. Additionally, what are the decision-making processes of educators for the VR programs chosen for classroom use based on ethics and student safety? Through qualitative inquiry, educators from K–12 and higher education shared their perceptions of ethics and safety concerns in VR applications for use in the …

Scalable Near Realtime Loss And Duplicate Detection From Received Sequence Numbers, N/A Dec 2020

Scalable Near Realtime Loss And Duplicate Detection From Received Sequence Numbers, N/A

Defensive Publications Series

In a system where a transmitter transmits packets to a number of receivers, a packet may be received one or more times over the set of receivers or may be lost (not received at any of the receivers). The problem is to determine, in a scalable and computationally feasible manner, packets that have been received over the set of receivers and packets that have been lost. For such single-transmitter-multiple-receiver scenarios, this disclosure describes scalable and computationally efficient techniques to detect missing or duplicate packets based on sequence numbers. Each receiver maintains an array of bits corresponding to packets it received. …

Aligning Food Environments With Institutional Values: A Mixed Methods Study Of Oregon Health Care Organizations, Elizaveta Walker

Dissertations and Theses

A major driver of the obesity epidemic is obesogenic food environments, characterized by nutrient-poor and energy-dense foods that saturate the collective physical, economic and sociocultural conditions that influence nutritional status. Food environments in organizations such as hospitals and public health agencies warrant special consideration given their health-focused mission. Improving food environments within health care settings has been highlighted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as one of seven key strategies to prevent obesity. However, most of the refereed literature examining healthy food environment policies (HFEPs) within hospitals focuses on the inpatient dietary environment, leaving a paucity of …
