Negative Emotions In Fieldwork: A Narrative Inquiry Of Three Efl Researchers’ Lived Experiences, Adilur Rahaman, Shuvo Saha

The Qualitative Report

Through narrative inquiry this research depicts and interprets the negative emotions that three English as Foreign Language (EFL) researchers experienced in different research sites during their fieldwork. Narrative inquiry informs the design of this investigation as the approach is particularly useful for understanding lived experiences. The study draws on autobiographical as well as narrative data to report the negative emotions that evolve during English language education fieldwork, an aspect absent in the existing literature. Findings suggest that the researchers experienced a wide range of negative emotions namely ethical dilemma, anger, anxiety, guilt, and shame. These results carry implications for language …

Educational Progress‐Time And The Proliferation Of Dual Enrollment, Brice Nordquist, Amy J. Lueck Dec 2020

Educational Progress‐Time And The Proliferation Of Dual Enrollment, Brice Nordquist, Amy J. Lueck

English

In this commentary, we use the occasion of the proliferation of dual enrollment to examine the discursive construction of difference between high school and college literacies, and its effects on teachers and students. This discursive divide has real, material consequences. It informs (and constrains) literacy practices and pedagogies, becomes a barrier to access (particularly when operationalized in testing procedures), contributes to dropout and attrition, exacerbates unequal power and resources in communities, and justifies hierarchical relations between high school and college faculty and staff. By deconstructing the definitions of high school and college and the metaphors of containment they rely on, …

Source Of Information: Between Domination And Threat To Impoverish Perspective Of Local Public, Efi Fadilah, Atwar Bajari, Asep Suryana, Nik Norma Nik Hasan

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The use of information sources in the information gathering process for news media content is very crucial in the context of its role and function as an instrument in building citizen literacy. However, in cases where the local news media is relatively highly dependent on local government, many critical issues arise. Essentially, the relationship is symbiotic, but in reality, local news media is more dependent on local government. The local government almost functions as the backbone of local news media through its multiple roles; as the source of information, the source of income, and the main market for local media. …

New Secret Key Exchange Based On Recent Cryptographic Schemes., Amina Rashad, Maged Ibrahim, Zaki Nossair

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Authenticated key exchange protocols have an important role for building secure communications amongst two or more entities over the networks. Two party authenticated key exchange protocols where each pair of parties must share a secret with each other; a three-party protocol does not cause any key management problem for the parties. In this paper, an extension of two-party key exchange protocol, which is based on Diffie-Hellman key exchange. is proposed. In this protocol each user exchanges secret key with server then each user uses this secret key to exchange session key with each other. The efficiency and the security analysis …

Give Student Ideas A Larger Stage: Support Cross-Community Interaction For Knowledge Building, Jianwei Zhang, Guangji Yuan, Maria Bogouslavsky

Educational Theory and Practice Faculty Scholarship

This study explores boundary-crossing interaction between two grade 5/6 science classrooms that operated as knowledge building communities. The two classrooms studied human body systems with the support of the Knowledge Forum over a ten-week period. The knowledge building practice integrated student-driven inquiry and discourse within each community and cross-community interaction mediated through “super notes” posted in a cross-community meta-space. Students co-authored super notes as epistemic boundary objects, each of which synthesized knowledge progress in an emergent line of inquiry for cross-community sharing. Qualitative analyses of classroom videos, online discourse, and interviews provide a rich description of how the students conceived, …

[2020 Winner] The Power Of Guinaiya: The Intersections Of Love And Resistance Through The Native Chamoru Voice, Emily Mcmath

Ethnic Studies Research Paper Award

Over the last three centuries, the indigenous Chamoru people of Guåhan have endured several accounts of foreign colonization. Through time and physical space, native Chamorus have witnessed environmental destruction of precious ancestral land, a loss of deeply rooted cultural traditions and language, and blatant disrespect for an island and its people by the U.S. military. As an unincorporated territory of the United States, the Department of Defense has made their point clear: Guåhan is a military vessel first and foremost and the future of the island lies within the hands of the U.S. government. Though Guåhan might be small in …

Automating Autism: Disability, Discourse, And Artificial Intelligence, Os Keyes Dec 2020

Automating Autism: Disability, Discourse, And Artificial Intelligence, Os Keyes

The Journal of Sociotechnical Critique

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems shift to interact with new domains and populations, so does AI ethics: a relatively nascent subdiscipline that frequently concerns itself with questions of “fairness” and “accountability.” This fairness-centred approach has been criticized for (amongst other things) lacking the ability to address discursive, rather than distributional, injustices. In this paper I simultaneously validate these concerns, and work to correct the relative silence of both conventional and critical AI ethicists around disability, by exploring the narratives deployed by AI researchers in discussing and designing systems around autism. Demonstrating that these narratives frequently perpetuate a dangerously dehumanizing model …

Review Of Advocacy And Awareness For Archivists, Elizabeth D. James Dec 2020

Review Of Advocacy And Awareness For Archivists, Elizabeth D. James

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

Advocacy and Awareness for Archivists is at once a practical guide and a call to action to consistently communicate the work and impact of archives at the local, regional, and national levels. As an expansion of the Archival Fundamentals Series, the book places the work of advocacy as being central to the archives profession. However, it neglects to incorporate contemporary archival concerns related to power dynamics and inequity when planning and conducting an advocacy effort.

Users benefit from mechanisms that can help them refine their queries to facilitate searching for information connected to their underlying intent. Apart from refinements to narrow the scope of a query, users can benefit from suggestions that can help them pivot their information seeking by expanding their search sideways to related topics. This disclosure describes computational techniques for automated determination of suitable topics and/or queries for helping users expand the scope of their information search by pivoting to topics related to their query. The techniques involve selecting a meta-query, performing query expansion, identifying, aggregating, and deduplicating related entities. The identified …

Coaching Initiative For Beginning Teachers (Bt): Lessons Learned From One District’S Bt Support Program, Kathleen Brown, Monica Davis, Casey Elrod, Evan Hill, Derrick D. Jordan

Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership

Instructional coaching is a way to support classroom teachers in their efforts to provide high quality instruction across academic content areas. Because of beginner teachers’ needs for extra support, many districts are now embracing instructional coaches to provide specific pedagogical feedback to their beginning teachers via job-embedded, individualized, and sustained professional guidance. This initial, exploratory study employed mixed methods to gain both qualitative and quantitative insights into one district’s Beginning Teacher Support Program in general and Coaching Program in particular. Results indicate that, without a laser-like focus on instruction, the impact of coaching on student achievement and teacher retention is …

Fort King, Frederick Cubberly Dec 2020

Fort King, Frederick Cubberly

Florida Historical Quarterly

Unmarked and almost forgotten the site of Fort King, one of the historic spots of Florida, is to be found three miles east of Ocala. Established about one hundred years ago, the place was for many years the center of affairs concerning the Florida Indians. For many months during the year 1835 news from Fort King was anxiously awaited in Washington by the Administration and to this point the President of the United States and his Secretary of War dispatched many messages, or talks as the Indians described them; and from Fort King came back the reports from the Indian …
