Biomaterials For Bone Regeneration: Tunable Structural And Mechanical Characteristics, Anwer Mhanawee
Biomaterials For Bone Regeneration: Tunable Structural And Mechanical Characteristics, Anwer Mhanawee
Theses and Dissertations
Tissue engineering is a promising alternative treatment for damaged tissues. In bone regeneration, bone graft replacements can be made from different biomaterials (basically ceramic and polymer) and used for different treatment purposes. In the first section of this dissertation, the Compression test results showed that its modulus of elasticity depends on its porosity. Also, we developed a testing method to measure the swelling force of the material during expansion due to liquid absorption. The maximum swelling force was found to be proportional to the material modulus. In the second part, we successfully design, fabricate and characterize a novel expandable bone …

Defining Insanity: How An Individual's View Can Impact A Trial, Jayme L. Ayres
Defining Insanity: How An Individual's View Can Impact A Trial, Jayme L. Ayres
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
The insanity plea has always been a controversial topic among anyone. No one sees eye to eye on the matter. This can present a problem within professional fields. When insanity cases are brought into courtrooms, legal and psychology professionals need to be able to agree to some extent. However, these professionals have no true control on how jurors define insanity. Jurors tend to determine guilty or not guilty in insanity cases, based on their own personal views. The current study is a replication of Doctor John Geiger’s 2003 and 2008 study of how legal professionals and undergraduate psychology students view …

Chemical Tools For Residue-Specific And Secondary Amine Selective Petasis (Sasp) Bioconjugation Of Peptides And Proteins, Yonnette Sim
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Chemical protein synthesis is an invaluable tool that enables the construction of novel protein design, incorporation of non-native functionalities, elucidation of structure-function relationships and enable a wide diversity of modifications (such as Post Translation Modification) to study protein functions. Native Chemical Ligation (NCL) in conjunction with Fmoc Solid Phase Peptide Synthesis (SPPS) is the most used method for synthesis of functional peptides and proteins. The synthesis relies on the reaction of a C-terminal peptide thioester and a N-terminal cysteine peptide. Fmoc SPPS of peptide thioester for chemical protein synthesis via NCL is a challenge. Methods that exist for the synthesis …

Latin American Biblical Hermeneutics & Popular And Community Reading Of The Bible: Some Inputs From Race And Ethnicity Criticism Within The Hellenistic And Jewish Culture Of The First Century, Diego Salazar Galvis
Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations
After the Second Vatican Council, scholars have used new lenses to approach the Bible as a way to respond to the cultural and socio-political realities of multiple and diverse contexts. Based on my background and Latino essence, I advocate for biblical reading and interpretation that comes from a Latin American setting, in which popular education and liberation theology come together in most of the communities. In this research, I will present a form of mutual collaboration between race-ethnicity biblical criticism and the Popular & Community Reading of the Bible (PCRB) perspective.
So far, biblical scholarship has not yet integrated elements …

Motivation: Fast and accurate classification of ligand-binding sites in proteins with respect to the class of binding molecules is invaluable not only to the automatic functional annotation of large datasets of protein structures but also to projects in protein evolution, protein engineering and drug development. Deep learning techniques, which have already been successfully applied to address challenging problems across various fields, are inherently suitable to classify ligand-binding pockets. Our goal is to demonstrate that off-the-shelf deep learning models can be employed with minimum development effort to recognize nucleotide-and …

Chronic stress causes dysregulations of mood and energy homeostasis, but the neurocircuitry underlying these alterations remain to be fully elucidated. Here we demonstrate that chronic restraint stress in mice results in hyperactivity of pro-opiomelanocortin neurons in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus (POMCARH neurons) associated with decreased neural activities of dopamine neurons in the ventral tegmental area (DAVTA neurons). We further revealed that POMCARH neurons project to the VTA and provide an inhibitory tone to DAVTA neurons via both direct and indirect neurotransmissions. Finally, we show that photoinhibition of the POMCARH→VTA circuit in mice increases body weight and food intake, …

Recombinant Expression Of Preptin Analogs For Alanine Scanning Mutagenesis Of Residues 27-29, Tehgan N. Anguilm
Recombinant Expression Of Preptin Analogs For Alanine Scanning Mutagenesis Of Residues 27-29, Tehgan N. Anguilm
Theses and Dissertations
The novel peptide preptin consists of 34 amino acid residues corresponding to Asp69-Leu102 of proinsulin-like growth factor E-peptide. Preptin has been isolated from pancreatic beta cells, and it has been found to exhibit both metabolic and mitogenic activities. This makes preptin an attractive candidate to treat insulin-independent diabetes and osteoporosis. Alanine scanning mutagenesis was utilized to substitute an alanine for residues Trp27, Arg28, and Gln29 of preptin in order to ultimately study the structure-activity relationship of these residues to preptin’s metabolic activity.
Glare Reduction By Dark Facial Markings And Bills In Birds, Clara Lebow
Glare Reduction By Dark Facial Markings And Bills In Birds, Clara Lebow
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Avian facial plumage, bill coloration, and feather microstructure may serve one or more adaptive functions. Several researchers have proposed that dark eyestripes, bills, and facial masks aid in reducing glare, however, there have been relatively few tests of this hypothesis. Dark facial markings have been shown to have an adaptive glare-reduction function in recent field studies of a few species, but this hypothesis has never been tested in a broad multispecies analysis. It is likely that feather microstructure influences feather brightness and has an effect on the efficacy of glare reduction properties of feathers. I examined the link between dark …
Patterns Of Microbial Diversity And Community Composition In Slot Canyons, Rock Pools, And Other Ephemeral And Perennial Aquatic Habitats, Marley Madsen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Microbes are the most diverse life forms on the planet and perform many impor-tant ecological functions. However, despite the abundance, diversity, and ecological importance of microbes they are often overlooked and understudied in many natural systems, including freshwater habitats. This thesis details the first ever investigation of the microbial diversity and community composition within fresh water rock pools and slot canyons of the Colorado Plateau, Utah. The purpose of the study was to determine the relative importance of various microbial community assembly processes. This thesis also includes a meta-analysis of the microbial alpha diversity in other perennial and ephemeral aquatic …

Novel Bayesian Methodology For The Analysis Of Single-Cell Rna Sequencing Data., Michael Sekula
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) technology, researchers are able to gain a better understanding of health and disease through the analysis of gene expression data at the cellular-level; however, scRNA-seq data tend to have high proportions of zero values, increased cell-to-cell variability, and overdispersion due to abnormally large expression counts, which create new statistical problems that need to be addressed. This dissertation includes three research projects that propose Bayesian methodology suitable for scRNA-seq analysis. In the first project, a hurdle model for identifying differentially expressed genes across cell types in scRNA-seq data is presented. This model incorporates a correlated random …
Comparison Of 3d Coral Photogrammetry And Coral Video Transect For Coral Lifeform Analysis Using Low-Cost Underwater Action Camera, Ahmad Zuhairi Bin, Mohd Jinah Muhammad Idzham Helmi Bin, Saad Shahbudin Bin
Comparison Of 3d Coral Photogrammetry And Coral Video Transect For Coral Lifeform Analysis Using Low-Cost Underwater Action Camera, Ahmad Zuhairi Bin, Mohd Jinah Muhammad Idzham Helmi Bin, Saad Shahbudin Bin
ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development
This research analysed the use of 3D Coral Photogrammetry (CP) and Coral Video Transect (CVT) images collected from SCUBA divers using a low-cost underwater action camera to examine the coral lifeform. A comparison was made between data sets obtained using both methods on nine transects with different coral lifeform compositions and percentage cover within an area of 4 × 7 m. The comparison of the statistical analysis for CPCe revealed that there were no significant differences (p < 0.05) between CP and CVT photos where dead corals (p = 0.006), sand (p = 0.011), and unknown (p = 0.002) are present. Additionally, the coral value (p = 0.131) between CP and CVT was not significant. CP was capable of producing prominent branching, massive, and plate coral morphology results. This suggests that survey methods using low-cost action cameras for 3D Coral Photogrammetry would yield appropriate results in terms of coral lifeform detection. Hypothetically, by improving camera quality, it will yield a higher accuracy of 3D coral images that are suitable for use in scientific research and management. Other benefits of using CP include the possibilities for future studies with 3D coral surveys using remotely operated vehicles, less field time, and 3D coral seabed information.

Anthropology Honors Projects
This thesis addresses the absence of frameworks for collaborative interpreting Indigenous archaeological sites. I discuss my experience of descendant-centered collaboration with representatives from Dakota communities to create two interpretive signs for Macalester’s Katharine Ordway Natural History Study Area (KONHSA). I worked with Tribal Historic Preservation Officers from Upper Sioux Community, Lower Sioux Indian Community, and Prairie Island Indian Community to determine sign content and design. In this work, I examine the history of the land currently called KONHSA from an archaeological perspective. Then, I discuss the history of archaeology and Cultural Resource Management (CRM) as an oppressive practice, and I …

Non-Uniform Haar Wavelet Method For Solving Singularly Perturbed Differential Difference Equations Of Neuronal Variability, Akmal Raza, Arshad Khan
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
A non-uniform Haar wavelet method is proposed on specially designed non-uniform grid for the numerical treatment of singularly perturbed differential-difference equations arising in neuronal variability. We convert the delay and shift terms using Taylor series up to second order and then the problem with delay and shift is converted into a new problem without the delay and shift terms. Then it is solved by using non-uniform Haar wavelet. Two test examples have been demonstrated to show the accuracy of the non-uniform Haar wavelet method. The performance of the present method yield more accurate results on increasing the resolution level and converges …

Surviving Under The Reign Of El Niño Southern Oscillation: An Analysis Of The Effects Of Extreme El Niño Events On The Oceanographic And Biological Environment Of The Galápagos Islands, Ava Mcilvaine
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is commonly known as the atmospheric and oceanographic powerhouse of the Southern Pacific Ocean. From phytoplankton to apex predators, ENSO controls the stability of species’ populations within this biodiverse ocean environment. El Niño’s 9-15 month alteration of the heat storage in the tropical Pacific drastically shifts the temperature, nutrient, and circulation gradient its marine life is accustomed to. A single degree change in the ocean’s surface layer temperature can have large consequences for marine species, and El Niño is commonly associated with Sea Surface Temperature Anomalies (SSTAs) between 2°- 6° Celsius. The potential danger El …

Climate Change Effects On Volcanoes In The Tropics: A Review Of The Deglaciation Of Antisana And Its Effects On Subsequent Water Streams And Rivers Over 20 Years, Callie C. Rominger
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Located in the Northern end of Ecuador lies the stunning glacier of Antisana which attracts many tourists and whose runoff provides a significant amount of water supply for Quito. Climate change is posing threats to many ecosystems world wide but will have a more substantial impact on the volcanoes in the tropics because they do not have a seasonally altered climate. Small changes in the air temperature can have larger impacts on these areas that are adapted to constant temperatures with seasonal precipitation changes. Climate change, in recent years, had caused an increase in the glacial retreat of the Antisana …

Fibration Symmetries Uncover The Building Blocks Of Biological Networks, Flaviano Morone, Ian Leifer, Hernán A. Makse
Publications and Research
A major ambition of systems science is to uncover the building blocks of any biological network to decipher how cellular function emerges from their interactions. Here, we introduce a graph representation of the information flow in these networks as a set of input trees, one for each node, which contains all pathways along which information can be transmitted in the network. In this representation, we find remarkable symmetries in the input trees that deconstruct the network into functional building blocks called fibers. Nodes in a fiber have isomorphic input trees and thus process equivalent dynamics and synchronize their activity. Each …

Listeria monocytogenes is a Gram-positive facultative anaerobic bacterium that is responsible for the disease, listeriosis. It is particularly lethal in pregnant women, the fetus, the elderly and the immunocompromised. The pathogen survives and replicates over a wide range of temperatures (4 to 42 °C), pH, salt and oxygen concentrations. Because it can withstand various environments, L. monocytogenes is a major concern in food processing industries, especially in dairy products and ready-to-eat fruits, vegetables and deli meats. The environment in which the pathogen is exposed can influence the expression of virulence genes. For instance, studies have shown that variations in oxygen …
The Rising Profile Of Sexual Harassment On Campus: How Do Faculty Respond Inside And Outside The Classroom, Scott C. Strother
The Rising Profile Of Sexual Harassment On Campus: How Do Faculty Respond Inside And Outside The Classroom, Scott C. Strother
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Faculty behavior inside and outside the classroom is one of the many concerns faced by higher education administrators. Inappropriate comments, behavior, or acts engaged in by faculty members have resulted in sexual harassment complaints being filed by students, and in some cases resulted in costly litigation and settlements for some colleges and universities. In the recent news, public figures like actor Bill Cosby and Hollywood director Harvey Weinstein have been openly accused of sexual harassment and/or rape. High publicity matters like these presumably have an influence on awareness of the issue of sexual harassment.
The purpose of this study was …

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Characteristics of host species can alter how other, interacting species assemble into communities by acting as ecological filters. Pitchers of tropical pitcher plants (Nepenthes) host diverse communities of aquatic arthropods and microbes in nature. This plant genus exhibits considerable interspecific diversity in morphology and physiology; for example, different species can actively control the pH of their pitcher fluids and some species produce viscoelastic fluids. Our study investigated the extent to which Nepenthes species differentially regulate pitcher fluid traits under common garden conditions, and the effects that these trait differences had on their associated communities. Sixteen species of Nepenthes …

An important subgroup within the porphyrazine (Pz) family constitutes seco-porphyrazines, in the chemical structure of which one pyrrole unit is opened in the oxidative process. So far, there are only limited data on N-seco- and C-seco-Pzs. Here, the synthesis of a novel member of the Pzs seco-family, represented by an S-seco-tribenzoporphyrazine analogue, 22,23-bis(4-(3,5-dibutoxycarbonylphenoxy)butylsulfanyl)tribenzo[b,g,l]-22,23-dioxo-22,23-seco-porphyrazinato magnesium(II), is reported, with moderate 34% yield. The new derivative was characterized using NMR spectroscopy, UV–Vis spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. In the photochemical study performed following the indirect chemical method with 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran, S-seco-Pz revealed a high singlet oxygen quantum yield of 0.27 in DMF. Potential photocytotoxicity of …
