Constructing A Neoliberal Youth Culture In Postcolonial Bangladeshi Advertising, Md Khorshed Alam Sep 2020

Constructing A Neoliberal Youth Culture In Postcolonial Bangladeshi Advertising, Md Khorshed Alam

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

My dissertation examines the role of advertising in producing cultural narratives within the contemporary neoliberal economy and the historical context of Bangladesh. More specifically, based on thematic analysis of data collected from 73 in-depth interviews with Bangladeshi advertising practitioners, this study aims to understand the discursive production of youth culture in the country. The dialectical tensions between the global and local, universal, and particular inform this study. Using a postcolonial and cultural studies approach, this study investigates how Bangladeshi advertisers reconfigure, replace, or reinforce the notion of youth culture in Bangladesh. This study is significant because it: a) introduces a …

Agent Modeling, Behavioral Complexity, And Wicked Problems: Lessons Learned From A Multi-Disciplinary Collaborative Agent-Based Simulation Of Water Management In A Transboundary Region, Jack Friedman Sep 2020

Agent Modeling, Behavioral Complexity, And Wicked Problems: Lessons Learned From A Multi-Disciplinary Collaborative Agent-Based Simulation Of Water Management In A Transboundary Region, Jack Friedman

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

How much behavioral complexity can be integrated into real-world agent-based modeling, and does it matter whether we capture this complexity when considering wicked environmental problems? Early social science advocates of agent-based modeling insisted that understanding the interactions between actors through networks would shed light on the emergent qualities of behavior that could, in turn, provide the richest understanding of human complexity. We describe the collaboration that developed between a team of cultural, psychological, and environmental anthropologists and a team of socio-environmental modelers in order to show how we were able to balance human behavioral complexity with the quantitative and computational …

Innovative Teaching Knowledge Stays With Users, Brittnee Earl, Karl Mertens, Susan E. Shadle, John P. Ziker Sep 2020

Innovative Teaching Knowledge Stays With Users, Brittnee Earl, Karl Mertens, Susan E. Shadle, John P. Ziker

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Programs seeking to transform undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics courses often strive for participating faculty to share their knowledge of innovative teaching practices with other faculty in their home departments. Here, we provide interview, survey, and social network analyses revealing that faculty who use innovative teaching practices preferentially talk to each other, suggesting that greater steps are needed for information about innovative practices to reach faculty more broadly.

Large brains and behavioural innovation are positively correlated, species-specific traits, associated with the behavioural flexibility animals need for adapting to seasonal and unpredictable habitats. Similar ecological challenges would have been important drivers throughout human evolution. However, studies examining the influence of environmental variability on within-species behavioural diversity are lacking despite the critical assumption that population diversification precedes genetic divergence and speciation. Here, using a dataset of 144 wild chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) communities, we show that chimpanzees exhibit greater behavioural diversity in environments with more variability - in both recent and historical timescales. Notably, distance from Pleistocene forest refugia is associated …

Not Everyone Is Lovin' It: Work, Class And The Everyday In Al Sahel, Salam Ebeid Sep 2020

Not Everyone Is Lovin' It: Work, Class And The Everyday In Al Sahel, Salam Ebeid

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores work in one of the “Big” fast food chains in Al Sahel. In this space I study how multinational ideologies/language are manifested within a local context through notions of control, discipline and power. Throughout the various thesis chapters, I try to understand how work functions with/through a specific social apparatus that is linked to work and class. How the relationships between workers unfold within this restaurant. Unpacking notion of Al Sahel Time Zone that studies different perceptions of time through Al Sahel's space. How work is felt on the body, perceived, tricked and understood by the workers …

Supervision As The Signature Pedagogy For Counseling Leadership, Melissa Luke, Harvey C. Peters Sep 2020

Supervision As The Signature Pedagogy For Counseling Leadership, Melissa Luke, Harvey C. Peters

Teaching and Supervision in Counseling

The authors apply the signature pedagogies framework for pedagogical foundations in counselor education put forth by Baltrinic and Wachter Morris (In press) to counseling leadership. Accordingly, we first define counseling leadership and describe the limited literature focused on pedagogical practices related to counseling leadership. Next, we discuss supervision and use the notion of broad and specific features as discussed within Baltrinic and Wachter Morris (In press) to systematically examine whether there is a signature pedagogy for counseling leadership, and purport how supervision of counseling leadership largely fulfills the criteria. Finally, we discuss how supervision of counseling leadership can be utilized …

Implementation Of A Low-Stakes Daily Assessment In A Large Introductory Lac Course, Marian I. Hamilton Sep 2020

Implementation Of A Low-Stakes Daily Assessment In A Large Introductory Lac Course, Marian I. Hamilton

Teaching & Assessment Symposium Recordings

Low-stakes assessments contribute to positive classroom culture, increase student confidence and preparation, provide feedback to the professor on common misconceptions, and open up lines of communication between students and professors. Here, I present an example of how Canvas can be leveraged to perform a daily, low-stakes assessment in a medium-to-large LAC introductory course. These daily assessments hold students accountable for attendance and participation without levying harsh penalties for personal circumstances, allow the professor to nimbly address misconceptions in real time, and increase the personal relationship between students and professor in a setting in which it would otherwise be easiest for …

We Studied What Happens When Guys Add Their Cats To Their Dating App Profiles, Lori Kogan, Shelly Volsche Sep 2020

We Studied What Happens When Guys Add Their Cats To Their Dating App Profiles, Lori Kogan, Shelly Volsche

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

If you’ve used a dating app, you’ll know the importance of choosing good profile pics.

These photos don’t just relay attractiveness; a recent study suggested that 43% of people think they can get a sense of someone’s personality by their picture. You might guess that someone who has included a photo of themselves hiking is an outdoorsy type of person.

But as scientists who study human-animal interactions, we wanted to know what this meant for pet owners – in particular, male cat owners.

If you’re a guy who owns a cat, what kind of effect does it have on suitors …

Black Lives Matter: On The Denial Of Systemic Racism, White Liberals, And Polite Racism, Eddy Ng, Andrew Lam

Faculty Journal Articles

Systemic discrimination, racism, and inequality have garnered renewed and intense attention following the George Floyd murder and demonstrations of Black Lives Matter (BLM) around the world. In sharing our anger and sorrow, we reached out to several colleagues and scholars in the Black community. We wanted to provide a forum [1] for them to express their grief, share their experiences and help us move forward. The response to our invitation to write was overwhelming, but also heartbreaking. Our colleagues were devastated and broken. They expressed immense difficulty in writing because of anger, despair, and sadness. Stella Nkomo (personal correspondence) asked …

Functional Search Problems Among Medline Databases, C. Sean Burns Sep 2020

Functional Search Problems Among Medline Databases, C. Sean Burns

Information Science Presentations

The National Library of Medicine's (NLM) MEDLINE database is the most important bibliographic database in the bio and related sciences. MEDLINE is freely accessible via the PubMed web interface, but NLM also licenses MEDLINE data to information service providers including EBSCOhost, ProQuest, Ovid, and Web of Science. The talk covers a longitudinal study of these five MEDLINE-based bibliographic database platforms. The goal of the study is to identify where and how these platforms differ when searched with semantically and logically equivalent search queries. The results have implications for literature searches, including systematic reviews.
